From Rabbi Miller….
This summer I was very fortunate to be able to spend two weeks serving on the education faculty at URJ Camp Harlam. Camp Harlam is located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains. The view from any spot in camp is picturesque. There are lush green fields surrounded by gorgeous tall mountains. Just about every day there was an incredible blue sky that was occasionally dotted with white fluffy clouds. Day time at camp is busy! There is hustle and bustle in every part of camp. Kids are running in the fields, laughing, shouting, and cheering. But in the morning, camp is incredibly quiet and still. I loved this hour of the day in camp and got up early to run or to walk each morning. There is something so peaceful and awe inspiring about being surrounded by the incredible beauty of nature and creation. This early morning time gave me a chance to clear my head, to be introspective, and to reflect upon my life. This early morning time gave me a chance to slow down, to breathe, and to express gratitude for all that is good in my life. In just a few weeks we will celebrate our first High Holy Days. The month prior to Rosh Hashanah, the month of Elul, is the time designated by Jewish tradition to be reflective about our lives. How have we lived in the year that is about to come to an end? In what areas of our life do we need to go back to make amends, to heal old hurts? What changes would we like to make for the new year? This is our time to prepare for the hard work of repentance and change as we enter into the new year. I hope that everyone will give themselves the gift of a little bit of time, every day, to think about the year that is coming to an end, and to dream about who we want to be in the new year that is to come. I am excited to welcome in the New Year with the Temple B’nai Or family and I look forward to meeting and greeting everyone. Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Ellie Miller

From the Cantor…
יבנו יהוה אליך ונשובה )איכה ה' כא( .חדש ימינו כקדם ,הש
“Return us to You, O God, and we will return, renew our days as of old.” (Lamentations 5:21) As the Holidays approach, we renew our commitment to return, to begin again. This verse from the book of Eicha (Lamentations) is chanted in the month of Elul (preceding the New Year). The idea is for us to reflect and prepare for the sacred work of Teshuvah – Repentance during the High Holidays.
The book of Eicha, is one of five scrolls in the bible. It is traditionally believed to have been written by the prophet Jeremiah as a response to the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. This scroll is read on Tish’a b’Av (the 9th of Av), the day we commemorate the destruction and exile of the Jews, by king Nebuchadnezzar, to Babylonia. Ironically, I am writing these words in July, while in breezy Tel Aviv.
Like the book of Lamentations, I too, have more questions than answers. The text asks why? How could it be that the Jewish people suffer such destruction, death, exile?
Rather than believing that God has forsaken us, the traditional interpretation is that we were punished because we did not follow in God’s ways. The Babylonian king is merely an instrument of God to renew our relationship, and return to the right path.
However, in a society of science and logic, it is impossible to find solace in this interpretation. We know that death and tragedy happen to everyone, and humanity has no answers to unjust destruction. We study this text nevertheless, as an ancient poetic expression of our ancestors’ despair.
This verse, while in Israel with family and friends, helps me reflect and gather strength to continue this fascinating journey. I wish for us deep introspection for meaning and connection. Shanah Tovah um’tukah (A sweet New Year) Cantor Galit Dadoun Cohen
From the President…
Sliding Into Memory
The Holidays are coming. School is around the corner. The tug of responsibility and routine beckons. But, not just yet. It is still Summer and time is precious. Time represents the opportunity to dream, to connect with each other and to enjoy Life. Take the time to do what you think about doing in February; savor this weather and starry nights, ripe with leavened lore.
In this spirit, I spent 4 hours on a beautiful Saturday to go through 11 carousels of family slides representing nine years of my family’s life and my childhood. Family vacations, holidays, pets, birthday parties, friends and family. 987 images were digitalized. My parents and grandparents, who are featured so prominently in these slides, are no longer living. I began sending pictures to family members and friends, and was repaid immediately with fabulous reactions and thanks. The images rekindled memory through tangible representation.
Enjoy the summer season and take time to ponder, explore, enjoy and relax. Take pictures, sketch images, make movies, keep journals. These efforts will take time but will reward you by preserving wonderful, even poignant, memories. The past and future are often shaped by the most precious and misunderstood gift - the present. Embrace these times. February will return, again.
I look forward to seeing all of you back at temple for the High Holidays. They are sure to be wonderful. Rabbi Miller and Cantor Galit are working very hard to make these Days of Awe resonate with all of you. Return your Kehilah forms and pledges and renew your commitment to Temple and to Judaism.
Shanah Tovah, Keith Barbarosh, President
