Hello VOS Members:

“… in like a lion, out like a lamb” It is beginning to feel like spring! This month’s speaker is sure to spark your enthu-siasm to get out there and go searching for North American orchid species. David McAdoo will present “Wild Orchids of North America; 40-plus Years of Chasing Them.” David caught their images. He will not be selling plants. Therefore, members can sell plants. Also, the VOS will have about 2 dozen plants to sell. They are bloom-ing dendrobiums and Alacera Dragon Wings “Puff”. Although the Dragon Wings look somewhat like a Sharry Baby they have a soft subtle scent similar to baby powder. They have been a delight in the house. The show is over and there are MANY people to thank and acknowledge. I want to start with Ron and Sue who started months ago and are still working on the final accountings. Next are the committee chairs and finally, the members who I loving-ly think of as the helper bees. You get the job done. Thank you to all who donated your time, expertise, money, energy, creativity and enthusiasm to make our show a success. I am so proud to be your president! You all did a fantastic job! I am not the only one who thinks that either. A few of the comments we received are mixed in with pictures on the following pages! Tom Rush said he estimated (based on store transactions) that at least 3000 people saw our show. Welcome new members Dawn Bonura and Brenda Canada. Don’t forget: Members can sell plants. I look forward to seeing you on the 19th. Daune

President’s Message:

Congratulations to Allen Black on receiving an Award of Merit for his orchid, “Bc Morning Edition ‘Salinas’

DID YOU KNOW: The most widely known of the early North American Orchids is the yellow lady slipper of which there are 12 species.

Orchids in Wonderland Show

This year was my first time volunteering to work with the judges — what a wonderful opportunity. I learned so much, but I’m sure it was just a small fraction of what they know about orchids!! Did you know that studying to become an AOS judge takes 7 years at least? A special ‘thank you’ to the judges for allowing me to ask questions and for answering them — and allowing me to listen to the judging conversations in the back room. Here are just of few of the orchids in the awesome show Orchids in Wonderland!!

Personally, the Virginia OS Show is my favorite away show. The venue is wonderful and the exhibits are excellent. However, it is the people who make it truly exceptional. The wonderful organization and friendly reception by the Society members makes your show very special. I appreciated the results tally you sent out to participants this year! Thank

you all for inviting us to participate! Nancy Harvey

Excellent food for the judges and vendors! Much appreciated. Love the small yogurts and fruit. A big thank you to everyone in the society for such great support and organizing. And an especially big thank you to Strange's for providing such a

dream venue! Janet and Steve

For newsletter editors: Orchid societies are welcome to reproduce the AOS Corner, in whole or in part, in their soci-ety newsletters. We encourage promotion of AOS website use by your members.

Affiliated Societies Committee The event registration and hotel reservation link: American Orchid Society Spring 2017 Members Meeting is on the AOS website. It’s being held at the Fairchild Tropi-cal Botanic Garden, home of the AOS, in Coral Gables, Florida, on May 17-21, 2017. Also, note that it’s being held in conjunction with Redland International Orchid Festi-val in Homestead, Florida, which is an event beloved by many orchid enthusiasts. Special hotel rates are being made available and quantities are limited, so book now before it’s too late. Please put it in your calendar and let your members know that all AOS members are welcome to join us. Space is limited and filling quickly so we en-courage you to make reservations. Each month I await my copy of Orchids magazine, the Bulletin of the American Or-chid Society. I always open it immediately and it’s the one magazine that I actually read cover to cover. Whether it’s technical knowledge, learning about what’s up and coming in the orchid world, or simply appreciating the spectacular photos of newly awarded flowers of other orchid enthusiasts, it is always full of useful information. We now have access to 350+ past issues of Orchids magazine online and I often find myself on the AOS website looking for info on an orchid that I have just seen at a so-ciety meeting or show that I have been wowed by. It’s the place I can always find accurate and complete information. It gives me a great appreciation for the individu-als who have established, maintained and so generously contributed to the AOS to provide a wealth of what, for me, always brings joy into my life.

Now that orchid show season is in full swing, we ask you to encourage attendees and those who express interest in learning more about orchids to become members of the AOS. It’s the only way to get a subscription to Orchids magazine and gain access to the “members only” areas of the website. Remember, if you have pre-printed mem-bership forms with your society’s name included, there is a program for new member-ships which allows you to get a one-month society membership extension as de-scribed later in this newsletter.

THE MARCH 2017 AOS CORNER– From the desk of Denise Lucero, Vice-Chair, American Orchid Society Affiliated Societies Committee ([email protected]).

DID YOU KNOW: The US is home to over 200 native species of orchids, with approximately one-half of these in Florida. VA and North Carolina have ap-proximately 60 species each.
