Palgrave Parish Council
An additional parish council meeting was held on 9
th March to ensure compliance with legal require-
ments and that business could continue until the new council meets on 14th May.
Annual Parish Meeting 24
th April - Will be over by the time you read this and hopefully you were inter-
ested in what is happening in your village and so were there. For those unable to attend a report will appear in the June ‘Star’. A report was received from the School after publication of the other reports in April’s ‘Star’ and so, with the editor’s permission, it is reproduced here for completeness. ‘Bus Shelter and Village Sign - Works to the ‘bus shelter have been completed and we hope that you think that it is a considerable improvement. The noticeboard in the ‘bus shelter is for pinning (not stapling or sticking) parish and community notices and Palgrave residents are welcome to use it. The supporting post for the village sign has been treated and strengthened around its base and is be-ing sprayed to remove the algae before further protective treatment. Churchyard Work Day on Saturday 30
th May - Please see separate entry for more information.
‘Lorrywatch’ - Volunteers continue to observe and report HGVs going through the 7.5T restriction across The Green/Denmark Hill and Suffolk CC is following these through. No other Roads or Traffic updates have been received from Suffolk CC Highways at the time of writing. Planning - Local Plan Review - Your council’s response to the early consultation is now available on the parish council website together with other related council documents. Following last January’s sur-vey Palgrave has been provisionally allocated to a ‘cluster’ based around Diss, along with Stuston, Thrandeston and Wortham. This accurately reflects the views expressed at the public meeting. Parish Council Elections - With 11 vacancies but only 10 nominations all candidates were elected uncontested. The new councillors for the term commencing in May are: Elaine Bootman, Mike Boot-man, Michael Brown, Keith Charman, Elaine Collins, Wendy Cooper, John Gibbons, Val Pudney, Marion Sneddon and Neil Weston. The vacancy is to be filled by co-option so, if you are interested, please come along to council meetings to find out more. Parliamentary and District Council Elections - Will be held on 7
th May. Full lists of candidates are
displayed at the Community Centre and on the parish council notice board. Next meeting will be held on Thursday 14
th May - 7.30pm in the Community Centre - the Annual Par-
ish Council Meeting, when new Chairman and Vice-chairman are elected and representatives to other bodies are appointed. Members of the public are always welcome to attend and reminded that 15 minutes are set aside for any questions. The agenda is displayed 1 week in advance on the council’s notice boards by Forge Close and the Palgrave website: http://www.palgrave.onesuffolk.net/ along with much other useful in-formation.

Palgrave Annual Parish Meeting 2015 – Supplementary Report
4.7 Palgrave CEVC Primary School: Christopher Wells MBE (Chair of Governors)/Andrew Berry (Principal - Tilian Partnership of Schools - Federation of Gislingham and Palgrave CEVC Primary Schools with Bardwell CEVCP and Old Newton CEVCP) Palgrave CEVC Primary School currently has 60 pupils on roll. In September the teaching staff changed completely due to the retirement of the Assistant Head, Mrs Pauline James, and the reloca-tion of the two other teachers. This was quite a change for a school but has been very effective in in-creasing pupil progress and attainment and has also dramatically improved pupil attitude to learning. Palgrave has been Federated with Gislingham for four and a half years. This has been beneficial to both schools. Over the last year, we have been working in partnership with Bardwell CEVC Primary School and will be working with Old Newton CEVC Primary School from 13
th April.
Partnership involves sharing a Principal between the schools in order to create the most effective leadership and staffing structures; reduce expenditure so that savings can be used to focus on the activities that will have the best impact on pupils and share expertise across the schools. The four school partnership we hope will become a federation by this time next year. Because of these changes we have reorganised our leadership so that there is a leader, a Head of School, on site all week. The Head of School for Palgrave is Mrs Julia Waters and she is responsible for the day to day leadership of the school, with Mr Andrew Berry being responsible for the strategic overview and lead-ership of all the schools in the partnership. Because of the changes to the school partnership, we wanted to have a name for our Federation which was an identity for all the schools as a group. Each school retains its own name, own uniform and own ethos but benefits from being part of a larger group. After much discussion and consultation the governors chose Tilian, which is the Anglo-Saxon word for inspire. Each year pupils in Year 6 (age 11) take Key Stage 2 SATs (tests in reading, writing and maths). Pal-grave’s results for 2014 were good in terms of pupil attainment and very good in terms of pupil pro-gress – this is based upon the levels pupils were at when they were seven compared to when they were 11. This gives a good indication of the effectiveness of the school because it measures the “value added” by the school. Palgrave continues to benefit tremendously from the support received by St Peter’s Church and its parishioners. Every Thursday a team from the Church lead an assembly based on Bible stories, called Open the Book. This assembly is a favourite of the pupils and because it takes place in the church, this gives a full worship experience. The church also allows the school to use their building for Brass lessons (which could not take place in the school without disrupting and deafening other classes!). We are extremely lucky to have a dedicated body of local people who support us so well. There was some very sad news this year when it was announced that Dr Merlin Channon had died. Merlin had been a school governor within the last three years and regularly visited and supported us in our music, teaching singing to our pupils. Parents are still concerned about the safety of pupils coming to and from school because of the roads around us. The school has reviewed its Travel Plan to identify specific issues. This was accepted by Chris Ward, Suffolk County Council, on 30 March, and should be with all other interested parties by the time of the meeting. We hope that the Travel Plan will bring increased impetus from Suffolk Police and from Suffolk County Council in ensuring a resolution to the problems. The school would benefit from having an area of “hard” surface on The Green to enable our pupils to have a play space throughout the year. We are looking at a variety of options including “astroturf” and composite surfaces that would provide what the pupils need but would fit in to the look of the current surface. There is still much work to be done on this and Mr Patrick Harrington, School Governor, is working hard to develop the plans. Mr Christopher Wells, Chair of Governors of the Federation of Gislingham and Palgrave Schools, was presented with an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in March. Kit received this award for services to education, thus recognising his significant contribution to our schools and other schools across Suffolk.

The Mountain Men This is the opening of a story written by Libby Michelin, aged 11, from Palgrave Pri-mary School A thick sheet of snow was draped around the mountain, bruised clouds swirled around the great grey beast’s head and dangerous daggers of rock worried its way out of the frost blanket, the rock face sloped down dangerously steep…… Sky, Ash and Jacob stared up at the mountain their backs bending back to appreci-ate the full height – for seconds they forgot about the icy, roaring wind and the deadly temperature as they stood in awe in front of the lumbering grey giant that was Mount Everest. ‘You know’ muttered Sky loud enough to be heard through the screaming wind ‘There is a certain beauty to the pile of rock that might kill us in a couple of days’ she joked even though her face was a mask of worry despite her teasing tone. ‘Maybe we should tell someone that we were climbing Mount Everest’ fretted Jacob his face turning pink due to the harsh weather condition.. ‘Meeh, we’ll be fine’ Ash reassured his voice dripping with child like enthusiasm. ‘After all, all they will do is try and stop us plus it’s the only major mountain in the world we haven’t climbed’ Ash ranted a sunny smile breaking out on his face. They were all set to go now, all they needed was the guts to do it……… Sky was the first, she wiped her face clean of worry and replaced it with excitement that tum-bled in her stomach like an avalanche. Ash and Jacob followed – their hands feet and legs were numb and their hearts beat faster and faster as they climbed higher and higher into the crisp clouds. It was coming to twilight – icy silver daggers slitted through the black velvet that was the night sky ...

PALGRAVE WALKING GROUP
Our group, which now regularly attracts between 20 and 30 walkers, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month leaving Palgrave Community Centre at 9.45 a.m. Everyone is wel-come to join our friendly group but it is regretted that dogs cannot be allowed on our walks. Addi-tionally Palgrave Walking Group, or its walk leaders, cannot be held liable for any injury sus-tained whilst on any walk they organise. Larraine and Martin will lead us on an easy, flat walk of 5.75 miles along the Great Eastern Pingo Trail, and there are no stiles. The walk begins along the old railway line, and takes in woods, heath and meadow. There is a car park at the start of the walk, which is off the A1075, 4 miles south-east of Watton. Afterwards we can adjourn to The Chequers Public House at Thompson. For anyone who hasn't heard of Pingos, they are shallow depressions, often filled with water, formed about 20,000 years ago during the last ice age. Tuesday 26
th May
Hilary will lead a walk around Wortham, a village that has developed over the centuries around its open spaces. The walk will start on Long Green, a Visually Important Open Space and a rare area of boulder clay grassland, and descend gently towards the Waveney valley and the sandy heathland of the Ling, itself a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Walkers will notice the dramatic change of flora and, hopefully, fauna. The walk is about 5 miles; there are no stiles but parts could be muddy after recent rain. Afterwards, well-earned refreshment will be taken at the Dol-phin. Future Walks Following are future walking dates with the names of the volunteers who have agreed to lead a walk. If you feel able to plan and lead a walk on the vacant dates please let us know so that we can add your name to the list. Details of the walk can be supplied at a later date although we do have a deadline for inclusion in the Palgrave Star of approximately the 17

Loneliness is something many of us never think about when we are surrounded by our family and friends. However, for a great many older people loneliness is a day-to-day re-ality and being lonely can significantly affect our health and well-being. Depression, in-creased stress levels, and decreased memory are just some of the ways that being lonely can impact upon our lives. As a doctor I have often seen patients who are lonely but there is no quick fix medicine that can be prescribed to help cure the problem. That is why I have been a strong sup-porter of the “Shine a Light on Loneliness” campaign run jointly by Age UK and the East Anglian Daily Times which tackles the growing social problem of isolation and loneliness. It is very sad that five million elderly people in the UK claim that the television is their main form of company. These are people who will have led full and active lives. Not only do they have a great wealth of experience and wisdom, they often have fascinating sto-ries to tell. When I meet my elderly constituents in a care home or at a local coffee morn-ing I thoroughly enjoy having the opportunity to talk to them and listen to their stories and experiences. That is why I was delighted to hear that since the Shine a Light on Loneliness campaign was launched in January of this year more than 100 people have approached Suffolk Age UK about volunteering, befriending and providing day services to people who are lonely. Because this is a problem where every single one of us can make a difference and help prevent someone becoming lonely. We just need to make the effort to take time out of our busy lives to talk to our elderly neighbours or make a phone call to a friend or relative who lives alone. Age UK Suffolk has set an excellent example by setting up groups and coffee-mornings. I have seen at first hand that the coffee-mornings may provide the only opportunity in the week for lonely people to get out of the house and talk to others. Age UK are also doing some very good work in educating older people in the latest technology so that they can keep in touch with friends and family members who may not be close by. Older people have worked hard all their lives contributing to our community and have done a great deal to make our country a better place, and it is only right that we do our best to support them. By taking those extra steps to speak and engage with our elderly friends and neighbours we will be more aware of their needs and what we can do to make sure that they remain as active and healthy members of our society. I believe that we have a moral obligation to support older people to combat loneliness as it will help to keep them socially active and able to enjoy their lives. Loneliness is a seri-ous problem in our modern society which we can all help to do something about. No training is needed to make a big difference and help alleviate loneliness in someone’s life. PALGRAVE GARDENING AND SOCIAL GROUP The sun shone for the first outing of the year for the Palgrave Gardening Group on 13th April. First stop was at Debham Art & Craft Centre where everybody enjoyed looking at a varied selection of Home Items & Giftware. This was followed by a visit to the Plants for Plants at East Bergholt. A guided tour by the owner Rupert Eley around the many acre'd gardens, he informed the group the reasons behind the plants and at the same time we were able to marvel at the won-der of glorious Magnolias in full bloom.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Enjoy your garden when you can, and endure when you must. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe RECIPE OF THE MONTH Sauce for leftover game or beef For 4 people you will need:- 12 oz cooked game or beef One onion, very finely chopped One clove of garlic, peeled and crushed Half pint of stock (preferably game stock). One tab Dijon mustard. One tab wine vinegar. One tab flour. One tab soft brown sugar. 6 drops Tabasco sauce Salt, pepper . Olive oil or butter. Heat the oil (or butter, or a mixture of both) and cook the onion until soft, adding the crushed garlic after a few minutes (do not allow to brown). Add the flour, amalgamate it and cook for a minute before adding the hot stock and stirring well (use a balloon whisk) until it thickens. When smooth add the vinegar, mustard, Tabasco and sugar and adjust the seasoning carefully to your own taste. Add the diced meat or game and pour into an oven-proof dish. Top, if you wish, with fried bread-crumbs and cook in a fairly hot oven (Reg 5 or equivalent) for about 20 minutes. Equally good with boiled rice and a salad, or with potatoes and vegetables. JAL Tip of the month.
Wallflower seeds should go in this month or next. Start them in modules under cover, then set them out in the vegetable garden, pinching out the growing tip as you do so. They appreciate some added lime. Watch out for seeds of the “Sunset” series. These have won an RHS award. Plants are robust and uniform and the flowers vivid and sweetly scented. JAL

HELP URGENTLY REQUIRED!! Are you someone who enjoys working with figures? Have you got an hour to spare each week? St Peter’s Church is in desperate need of a treasurer. You do not need to be a member of the congregation, just willing to look after our accounts and give a re-port at our PCC meetings 4 times a year. If this is something you feel you might like to do please contact our Church Warden Mrs Beryl Dyer on 01379 650382 for a chat over a cup of coffee and cake to find out more.
And ... Are You a Frustrated Thespian? Can you spare an hour once a week? We are looking for additional helpers for our Open the Book Team. Every Thursday at 9:00 the children from Palgrave School come into church for Open the Book. This is a specially produced collection of bible stories covering both Old and New Testament. With the help of a few of the children, we all act out a different bible story each week. We then think about the content, have a prayer and sing a suitable song to finish off. There is no requirement to learn lines as we each carry a script and most of the story is told by the narrator. We would be pleased to see both men and women joining us as we are sometimes very stretched when there is a large cast, perhaps, or members are on holiday or ill. If you would like to experience an Open the Book morning just come along to church at 9:00 one Thursday during term time to meet the team and see what goes on. There will be no pressure for you to join. Alternatively the end-of-term service on Thursday 26
th March would be an ideal time as you can blend in with parents and grandparents
and we shall be doing the whole Easter story.
And ...
Joyful village worship to celebrate summer, with hymns suggested by you!
You are warmly invited to come and sing at the Summer Songs of Praise at St. Pe-ter’s Church at 10.00 am for 10.15 am on Sunday 21
st June. Joyful village worship to
celebrate summer together with favourite hymns, followed by summery refreshments … Bring a friend! Enter your favourite hymns and worship songs in the box at the back of the church!

Neighbourhood Watch
Message from Police Direct Police need to trace several males following a burglary at the home of a woman in her 80’s in Palgrave. The woman was about to go to bed at around 10pm on, Thursday 26 March, when she heard glass smashing and saw four or five men entering her home in Crossing Road via the patio doors. All wore dark clothing and facial coverings. One, described as about 6ft tall and of large build, spoke to her, in an English accent, and told her to sit down. He stayed with her while the other males searched her home and a short time later all the males left. The woman was unhurt but a quantity of jewellery is believed to have been stolen. Police were alerted a short time after the men had left and began enquiries. Detectives are asking anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area around this time or anyone with information about those involved to call Suffolk Police on 101, quoting crime number ST/15/925.
