Stewardship
A Way of Life
This Week’s Readings
The Gospel reminds us that our lives and our deeds
must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to
the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so
that others may see our good works and give glory to
our Father in heaven.
Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
whose giving - whether of alms or of service—will
be an expression of gratitude for what the Father has
given them.
Sharing One’s Material Resources in the Parish
Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Monday - after 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Masses
Rosary
After the 9:00 a.m. Mass each Monday through
Saturday in the Cathedral except on
First Saturday when it is recited at 8:30 a.m.
All are welcome.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
You are invited to join us each Friday for some quiet
reflection and prayer in the Holy Cross Chapel
following the 9:00 a.m. Mass concluding with
Benediction at 3:00 p.m.
St. Agnes

Our next meeting is Monday,
February 13th at 1:00 p.m. in the

We will pray the Rosary, play bingo, and enjoy
delicious refreshments. All are Welcome!
Please pray the Rosary!
St. Monica Parents
Intercession Prayer
Group
St. Monica Parents Intercession Prayer Group meets on
the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
in the Holy Cross Chapel, located in the Parish
Ministries building. Our next meeting will be on
February 16, 2017. For more information call Mary at
375-0738.
Adult Confirmation
Classes
For various reasons there are many
adult Catholics who have not
completed their religious education
and received the sacrament of
Confirmation. This sacrament is necessary to be a
Godparent or Sponsor for a someone receiving
Baptism or Confirmation. There is no shame for not
receiving as a young person, as in many cases it
is not their fault. However, the sacrament can
be received as an adult (18 years and older) by
attending our Adult Confirmation classes in
preparation to receive Confirmation at the Vigil of
Pentecost on June 3, 2017. Classes will begin on
Sunday, March 12th and will meet for
approximately 10 weeks on a Sunday from
12:00-1:30 p.m. Adults interested in receiving the
sacrament this May must be a baptized Catholic
and present a valid baptismal certificate. Please
call Dr. Jo-Ann Metzdorff at 678-2306 or email
[email protected] for more
information or to set up an interview.
5 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
From the Rector —
Dear Parishioners:
This past week was a busy and blessed time for
our parish and Diocese. On the afternoon of Tuesday,
January 31st a special Mass was celebrated at St. Agnes
Cathedral wherein Bishop John Barres was led to the
Cathedra (the Bishop’s chair) and installed as the fifth
Bishop of our Diocese. Gratitude was fittingly
expressed by Archbishop Christoph Pierre, the Papal
Nuncio, and by Bishop Barres for Bishop Murphy’s
leadership of our diocese over these past fifteen years,
and I certainly echo their thanks. At evening prayer on
Monday, Bishop Murphy promised that he would spend
his retirement praying for us. May we also pray that
Bishop Murphy be blessed as he begins this new
chapter in his life.
As we welcome Bishop Barres to our Diocese
and parish, it is appropriate to recall the words of Pope
Francis when, in September 2015, he visited the United
States and spoke to the Bishops of the United States. In
his address, the Holy Father spoke very specifically
about the role of the Bishop in the life of the Church.
His words describe some of the characteristics that we
ask our loving God to endow Bishop Barres with as he
leads a Diocese of over 1.5 million Catholics. These
are Pope Francis’ words: “A pastor [i.e., “bishop”]
watches over the dreams, the lives and the growth of
his flock…A pastor keeps watch first and foremost
with prayer, supporting the faith of his people and
instilling confidence in the Lord, in his presence. A
pastor remains vigilant by helping people to lift their
gaze at times of discouragement, frustration and
failure.” Pope Francis continues and tells of being
struck “by how, in the early days of the Church, the
Hellenists complained that their widows and orphans
were not being well cared for [and how] the Holy Spirit
inspired them to create deacons and when Peter
announced the decision, he explained: ‘We are going to
choose seven men to take care of this; for our part, we
have two responsibilities: prayer and preaching’. What
is the first job of bishops?” asks Pope Francis. “To
pray. The second job goes along with this: to preach.”
May Bishop Barres be blessed with many
fruitful years serving the Church of Rockville
Centre. May he be a man of prayer ever open to the
Holy Spirit. May his words of preaching guide,
strengthen and inspire us. And may we, 1.5 million
strong, be ever more united as we proclaim the
Kingdom of God.
In the Peace and Love of Christ,
Father Bill
Principal’s
Announcements
Our celebration of Catholic
Schools Week was a great success.
Our Opening Mass last Sunday
and all the special events planned
during the week brought much joy and happiness to the
school community. I would like to thank the families,
parishioners, and friends who helped make our week
special. I appreciate the time you spent helping with the
various events. St. Agnes is truly blessed!
Speaking about being truly blessed, we are very
excited about our new bishop. Here is a welcome
message the Swanson sisters wrote on behalf of all the
students at St. Agnes Cathedral School.
Welcome Bishop Barres,
We are delighted that you will be our new Diocesan
Bishop! We are very excited to meet you, and we hope
that you can visit us at school. We heard that you like
basketball, so we hope you can join us at the upcoming
girls’ and boys’ basketball games. All of the students
here are very excited to listen to you and to learn more
about our faith. The St. Agnes students welcome you to
our loving community!
