THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

1) Malachi 3: 19-20a 2) 2 Thessalonians 3: 7-12 3) Luke 21: 5-19

FOCUS: Jesus gives us the grace and strength needed to perse-vere in faith.

Throughout his life and ministry, Jesus taught clearly that there is a cost to living as his faithful disciples. We may be rejected or persecuted for the sake of our faith. We need not fear, however, for Jesus promises to give us the grace and strength to persevere.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The first reading explains that the day is coming when the Lord will punish evildoers, but bring healing to the just. Paul’s words in Thessalonians urge those who are idle to keep busy and work quietly to earn their own food. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that he will give them a wisdom in speaking that will render their adversaries powerless to resist or refute.

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now?”

Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Pope Francis' Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Sa-maritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by for-giveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and for-given by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
