COLLECT

Almighty ever-living God, direct our actions according to your good pleasure, that in the name of your beloved Son we may abound in good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

COMMISSIONING OF LECTORS (at 12:00 Noon)

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 8:23-9:3

First the Lord degraded the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the end he has glorified the seaward road, the land west of the Jordan, the District of the Gentiles.

Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom where but now there was distress. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 26 (27):1, 4, 13-14 James D. Wetzel (b. 1987)

SECOND READING I Corinthians 1:10-13, 17

I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose. For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you. I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Matthew 4:23 Chant, mode vi

V. Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom and cured every disease among the people.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?

One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: To dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, That I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord and contemplate his temple.

I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord.

ALLELUIA Psalm 96 (97):1 (at 12:00 Noon) Chant, mode viii

GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-23

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him. He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people.

UNIVERSAL PRAYER AND CANDLEMAS NOVENA PRAYER

V: My own eyes have seen the salvation.

R: Which you have prepared in the sight of every people.

V. We ponder your loving kindness.

R. Within your Temple, O Lord.

Let us pray. We give you praise, ever living and ever loving God, for the many gifts you have given each of us and all of us. Grant us grace, we pray, to make an offering of them. As your son was presented in the Temple, so help us present ourselves, that we may share his generosity of self and his freedom in you, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Psalm 117 (118):16, 17 Chant, mode ii

At 12:00 Noon, the Offertory Antiphon is sung to a polyphonic setting by Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784).

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Accept our offerings, O Lord, we pray, and in sanctifying them grant that they may profit us for salvation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dextera Domini fecit virtutem, dextera Domini exaltavit me: non moriar, sed vivam, et narrabo opera Domini.

The right hand of the Lord has wrought strength; the right hand of the Lord has exalted me. I shall not die, but live, and shall declare the works of the Lord.

MUSIC NOTES

Giovanni Bassano was a key figure in the development of instrumental music in the Ventian school. He began playing cornett (not the modern trumpet-like brass instrument, but a wooden Renaissance instrument resembling in appearance a curved recorder) in the ensemble at Venice’s St. Mark’s Basilica around 1576 and in 1601 succeeded Girolamo Dalla Casa as head of its instrumental ensemble, remaining at the post until his death. He collaborated with and promoted the music of the Basilica’s other musicians, most notably Giovanni Gabrieli. Bassano’s own compositions, especially his instrumental music (canzonettas, ricercars, and fantasias), were known across Europe, and his detailed treatise on instrumental ornamentation is still used as a reference text.

Born in Bologna, Giovanni Battista Martini studied music with his father, a violinist, and with Antonio Riccieri and Giacomo Antonio Perti, and received a classical education from Bologna’s Oratory of St. Philip Neri. He entered the novitiate of the Conventual Franciscans friary in Lago and took his vows in the Order on in 1722. In 1725, he was appointed maestro di cappella of Balonga’s Basilica of St. Francis where he became known as a teacher and collector of music, eventually amassing over 17,000 volumes. In 1758 Martini was engaged to teach at the Accademia Filarmonica, through which institution Leopold Mozart sought his advice regarding the career of his son, Wolfgang.

Choral music at next Sunday’s Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas): Charles Wood’s Mass in F; Anton Bruckner’s Virga Jesse floruit; and Edvard Grieg’s Ave maris stella. Parish Vespers continues this and every Sunday at 5:30 PM in the choir stalls at St. Vincent Ferrer. The 2019-2020 Music List, Music as Holy Preaching, is available in the narthex and online. This booklet contains a list of this season’s concerts and repertoire for all choral services as well as information about the St. Cecilia Guild, our Friends of Music program that financially supports music in the Parish.
