Pastoral Letter

WHICH PATH WILL I CHOOSE TO PRACTICE MY FAITH? One of the most well-known Gospels is written by Saint Luke entitled: “The Prodigal Son.” It’s a great story of God’s love for His people as portrayed by a loving father who tries his best to provide his two sons with everything he can offer; whether they live with him in resentment or leave him and return because the pain of being separated is too difficult to bear. In St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians last week, he wrote: “…whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.” It could have been written with this week’s Gospel for the self-absorbed sons who lived charmed lives on their father’s estate. I believe we often fall into this distracted type of life and find it difficult to balance reality of what the word offers with God’s call for us. When we are young, time seems to move too slowly. We want quicker results so can advance in the type of life we believe is best for us. This usually reflects wealth, power and fame so that we are in control of our life. This is the path taken by the younger son who squandered his fortune on dissolute behavior leading to a sinful life. Self-absorption also can happen to those who seemingly represent the status quo of minding a life that’s upright in all the basic areas of providing food, clothing and shelter, but carry a deep-seated resentment because either no one appreciates what they view as a sacrifice or they are treated unfairly because they are silent about their perceived injustices. This is the path taken by the older brother. Neither of these paths will lead directly to a fulfilled life unless those on the paths stop to take stock of where the journey is leading and how to change that which leads one astray. In the case of the younger brother, hard times brought him “to his senses” to return home and find relief from his plight. With the older brother, nothing ever seemed to be enough, so we do not know if he ever found himself as a worthy family member to be loved as he wanted to be loved or ended in a permanent separation, distant and alone? What we do know is that God has called us by our Baptism to seek not the hollow gifts of a world with no end-game plan, but one in which the promises of eternal salvation are within our reach if we repent and have a change of heart towards following the ways of God in our love for Him and His creation. We need to remain patient, because God’s life plan for us is one in which we can reap the benefits over time rather than squander then when we feel the necessity.

Lenten Preparation - Penance Service April 10th at 7:00pm

Beginning at 7pm in the Church, the service will begin with Prayer, Music, Scripture with an Examination of Conscience

followed by individual confessions. Several priests will be available for

English and Spanish confessions

No less important is to live a lie that over time will destroy our very cares unless we receive some type of reward to compensate us for our time. For us, the question is: When is enough, enough? We seem to be going around in circles and nothing gets accomplished. The answer for both conditions is to pick another path that will respond with obvious positive reinforcements toward an end that helps us recognize God’s love for us and how we are to reciprocate that love to God and all that He has created. God is always there for us. He never abandons us in either the good or bad times. But we need to acknowledge how that love can make a difference for all who follow God by being active through our works in tandem with our faith belief in thought and word. What ONE THING can we do this week to make a difference in someone’s life? Do you know someone who is sick who could use a visit to cheer him or her up? Do you know someone who is suffering a divorce who is confused and needs help to understand the loss of a loved one? This would also go for people who have lost jobs, are homeless, poor or incarcerated. Being present can help them understand that they are still a member of God’s community. Lastly, never give up. If a path toward betterment is not working, try another one. God has given us all remarkable talents to use for ourselves and others. Don’t stop because one is not working as well in one situation as it has in others from the past. Collaboration with God may take trust and time because it needs to be right for the person being affected. You will find the right road and so will the person to whom you are helping. That’s a promise of God for those seeking salvation who in discipleship spread the Word about God’s Kingdom of Love. Deacon Jim

Laetare Sunday is the 4th Sunday of Lent, March 31, 2019. Priests are given the option to wear Rose colored vestments.

Rejoice! The Lord is Near! This color, which is only used twice in the whole liturgical year, is

traditionally associated with a sense of joy amidst a season of penance.

On both Sundays (Gaudete in Advent and Laetare in Lent), rose is worn to remind us that the season of preparation is coming to a

close and the great feast is swiftly approaching.

Ministry Spotlight

On March 18, 2019, Father Miguel, Michael Spillman, Jerry Cates, Deacon Ken, and our architect met with the construction board at the Diocese of Orange. This is the next step toward beginning our restroom renovation project. The current timeline has our restroom renovation project tentatively set to begin in early fall of this year. We are continuing to grow our construction fund so that we are able to complete the other phases (Baptismal Font, New Choir Location, and Children's Dismissal Room) through our PSA campaign. To date, we are so very thankful to announce that we have received 513 pledges for $267,168.10. Thank you to everyone who has made a prayerful pledge to this effort. Please continue to pray for the success of our campaign, a smooth construction process, and in thanksgiving for this great gift our Parish has received. Prayerful stewardship is an outward sign of our faith in action!

Did you know……. The Diocese of Orange continues helping survivors of sexual abuse and their families. As we begin April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Diocese wants to reiterate that it remains committed to helping survivors, and their families, heal and find peace. If you believe that you, or someone you know, is a victim of sexual abuse by a Church employee, volunteer, or clergy member, please contact the Diocesan Assistance Ministry Coordinator at (800) 364-3064 for help and support. www.rcbo.org/group/child-and-youth-protection/

UNPLANNED—OPENING THEATERS the Weekend of MARCH 29TH -31ST

All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in the upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their ‘reproductive choices.’ Her passion even drove her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in.….Until the day she saw something that changed everything for her. It led her to join her former enemies at 40 Days for Life to become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers and workers ever. You are strongly encouraged to go see the movie, UNPLANNED, on the opening weekend, March 29th – 31st. “If you see one movie this year, see the movie UNPLANNED. The movie depicts the true story of the prayers and compassion of the pro-life sidewalk counselors being the human instruments that God used in bringing a former Planned Parenthood clinic director, former Planned Parenthood employee of the year, Abby Johnson, out of the abortion clinic and into the offices of 40 Days for Life.” Archbishop Joseph Neumann, Chair of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities. Join Father Sy, Pastor of St. Martin de Porres, who is hosting a special showing of the movie Unplanned. The showing is on Saturday, April 6, 2019 beginning at 2:00pm at Cinema City Theater on La Palma Avenue in Anaheim. Father Sy, will introduce this movie and end with a brief discussion. The cost of the movie is only $5.00 and tickets are available at unplannedmoviesmdpyl.eventbrite.com.

WHEELCHAIRS AND THE WORK OF GOD - By Rose Wagner March 1 was international wheelchair day. This story is about Chris Lewis — son of

actor Jerry Lewis and a member of St. Angela Merici Council 5210. Chris helped to create the American Wheelchair Mission that has delivered nearly a

million wheelchairs to people in need. Chris Lewis’ bio describes him as born into the world of show business. One of Jerry Lewis’ six sons, Chris brings to the world the joy one would expect from the child of a comedic legend. “Like most kids, I wanted to be like my dad,” Chris said. “But it wasn’t in doing silly stuff and falling down; it was helping people who couldn’t help themselves.” Helping people was a Lewis family affair: From the age of 14, Chris worked with his dad on the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day telethon. He started by running errands on set, but by Jerry’s last year as host in 2010, Chris was associate producer. The telethon greatly influenced Chris’s path in the Global Wheelchair Mission: He today serves as the president of the American Wheelchair Mission, as well as a chairman and board member of the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation. “I decided a long time ago this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. And I had a good teacher in watching my father raising money to the tune of over $2 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association,” he said during a recent visit to Supreme Council headquarters. Today Chris’ work with the wheelchair mission impacts millions. Nearly 100 million people worldwide need a wheelchair, he said, but they can’t afford one. And since many cultures consider it a curse to have somebody with a physical disability, people with mobility limitations often get hidden away, unable to ever leave their homes. That is until the wheelchair mission volunteers come to town. The Knights of Columbus are among those volunteers. Knights have supported the wheelchair mission since 2003. In that time, Knights have purchased and distributed more than 70,000 wheelchairs around the world. This doesn’t just change the lives of the recipients. It also impacts families and the community — on average about 10 lives. “That’s 700,000 people whose lives have been changed.” Chris said. The distribution process, he said, starts with a donation of $150 for a single wheelchair. Once 280 wheelchairs are purchased, a container is shipped from Drive Medical in Port Washington, N.Y., to the distribution site. “It really is a wonderful collaboration of deep rooted goodness,” he said. “People want to do good in the world, but they haven’t found a way to do it yet. We’re giving them the way to touch people in a way that they’ve never been able to do before. Doing that as a group of Knights is really, really amazing.”

Dear Parishioners and families,

This is Isabella here with your weekly SJS news. On Monday, there was no school because teachers were hard at work developing the report findings for the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) Accreditation process. Tuesday, the See’s Candy fundraiser began. Wednesday we had Mass and Thursday we wore our college shirts for the day. Finally on Friday, we had an assembly and 6th grade hosted the Stations of the Cross.

As a reminder: St. Joseph School has a performing arts production of Mary Poppins Jr. on April 5th and April 6th at the Forum Theater in Yorba Linda….(see costumes in picture below:) The SJS student performers are working very hard on this and would love to see our parishioners attend and join in on the wonderful family fun entertainment.

You can contact Amanda Hawley at [email protected] or call the school office at (714) 528-1794 for any questions or more information. See the bulletin for details on how to buy your tickets.
