    This article discusses a dentists responsibilities when faced with the ingestionor aspiration of part of their patients braces or appliance, either in their clinicor at the patients home.

    These processes most often occur during active procedures, such as bandingor bonding, cutting the distal ends o archwires and debonding, but can alsooccur passivel! whilst the patient eats, pla!s sport or engaged in otherph!sical activit!.

'owever, some ob#ects, such as pin% acr!lic due to itssimilarit! to mucosal and cartilaginous tissues and ceramic brac%ets due totheir radiolucenc! are di(cult to identif! in an )*ra!.

    "hen an ob#ect is full! or partiall! aspirated the patient must be immediatel!transported to the nearest emergenc! care centre or hospital emergenc! roomto locate the ob#ect and identif! the best method for its removal.

    The ris%s associated with ingestion or aspiration should be included in theinformed consent document, thus providing notice to the patient, as one woulddo with all material ris%s.
