Have you taken a quiz
yet? Staff writer/typist/photographer: Kaya Mickelson
Do you like to read? Many fabu-
lous students here at Lakes are partici-
pating in the Accelerated Reader Program
(AR). The AR program gives students a
chance to show how much they love to
read each year.
Every time a student reads a book,
they can go to the computer in their class-
room and take a quiz on the book they
read. Depending on the amount of points
that are available for the book, and how
many answers you get right, you receive
points. The questions are usually about
the main characters and main events.
You take the AR quizzes to track how
much you read each year. Teachers can
give rewards to the readers. Shay B. in
Mrs. Adams’ class said, “AR reading is
fun and enjoyable. I love the prizes you
get.” Shay B. has 24.3 pts. and is still go-
ing. A few of the prizes in Mrs. Adams’
class include a pencil (25 pts.), a free book
pick (100 pts.), a starburst award (175
pts.), and a giant candy bar (250 pts.).
Mrs. Wolf said, “My students collect tick-
ets for AR and save them for an auction.”
So, all you need to do is pick up a
book and
read!
Make AR
a new
academic
goal and
finish the
year off
strong!

Paws of Time staff members (above) presented
their Feb. issue to the NTPS board members at
their meeting held at Lakes on Feb. 22nd. Stu-
dents thanked administrators and parents for
their continued support.
Lakes’ choir organized by Mrs. Rounsley welcomed
all board members and community by performing
a few songs for all in attendance. Many com-
mented on the creativity of the use of a kazoo dur-
ing the song, “Rubber Duckie.”
Fortune Cookie Fundraiser Thank you to everyone that purchased a
fortune cookie for a friend or family member.
Lakes purchased 920 pink cookies and the fund-
raiser raised a total of $660! The
money raised will be used to pur-
chase something for the school
grounds. More information to follow.

Believe in the magic Staff writer: Lauryn Daniels
If you’re looking for a great va-
cation spot, you can stop looking and
let Mickey Mouse and all his friends
take you on an amazing journey
through their awesome theme parks.
Of course there’s the one and
only Disneyland Park featuring their
spectacular light show, World of Color! World of Color is a light
and water show with projected screenings of famous Disney
characters. Another sight to see is the popular place for boys
and girls of all ages, Mickey’s ToonTown. It has a walk-in model
of Mickey’s house and at the end of the house you get to take a
picture with Mickey Mouse!
Danielle O., 4th grader in Mr. Pontius’s class says, “I
thought Disneyland was fun and I recommend people go there,
it is an awesome place.” If you’re looking for a high pace action
ride, then California Screaming is the right ride for you. It is
located in another theme park, California Adventure. It’s
where you dip, go straight up, then down to the ground, and up-
side down! After all that play you’ll be hungry, so go on down to
Garden Grove Restaurant (it’s a central park themed eatery)
and chow down on all kinds of 1020052 foods like: hamburgers,
chicken fingers, and more! Mrs. Lynn, one of our recess super-
visors, says, “I thought it was amazing and colorful, so much to
see and do. The food was great and I love the teacup ride and
the Pirates of the Caribbean ride!” Isaac Q., 4th grader from
Mrs. Duchesneau’s class also says, “It was awesome and fun,
but you have to walk around a lot.”
So, believe in the magic and take a trip to the happiest
place on earth!

Super Bowl
#46, Patriots fall
to the Giants
once again Staff writer: Leif Hunter
The Super Bowl
this year was a very
close match. Patriots
vs. Giants was a re-
match of the 2006 Su-
per Bowl. Anthony J.,
from Mrs. Russell's
3rd grade class said, “
I liked it when the gi-
ants got a touchdown
and the running back
sat down on the end
zone.” The score was
21-17 with the Giants
winning the game.
The Patriots have yet
to pull off a win
against the Giants in
the Super Bowl. Wil-
liam L. said, “It's awe-
some the Giants won
because Eli Manning
is the best quarter
back and Victor Cruz
is the best wide re-
ceiver on the Giants
side.” The final play
was heart breaking
for the Patriots be-
cause they were un-
able to catch the ball,
which worked out
really well for the Gi-
ants.
Next year’s
Super Bowl
is sure to
be just as
exciting.
Tony Hawk:
Skateboarding
legend Staff writer/typist: Kaitlynn Dean
Do you like to play sports? Are you
looking for a new activity to burn off some of
that after school energy? What about skate-
boarding? Madison L. in Miss Brown’s 5th
grade class says, “Skateboarding is fun and
great exercise. You can go real fast or as slow
as you want.” Even if you have not tried
skateboarding yourself, you may have heard
about Tony Hawk the famous skateboarder?
Tony Hawk is 43 years old, was born
and lives in San Diego, California. Tony first
learned to skate when he was nine years old.
His family thought skateboarding might focus
some of the hyperactivity that caused Tony is-
sues at school and at home. It worked. Soon,
he was practicing six hours a day. When he
was fourteen he became a professional skate-
boarder. At twenty-five years of age, Tony had
competed in 103 pro contests, won 73 of them
and placed second in nineteen of them. He
was crowned Vertical Skating World Cham-
pion twelve years straight.
In the early 90’s interest in skateboard-
ing died down and the popularity of it wasn’t
as great as it used to be. In 1995, ESPN in-
vited Tony to compete in the X Games. Mil-
lions viewed this and almost over-night, skate-
boarding was back! Jamarcus G. in Mrs. Felix
class says, “The X Games are cool to watch
because of the cool tricks.”
Tony also has many video games on the
market earning him 1016591 millions of dol-
lars. Tony has won many awards such as:
Make-A-Wish’s Favorite Male Athlete, Teen
Choice Awards, Choice Male Athlete and in
2003 and 2004 he was named Nickelodeon’s
Kids Choice Awards Favorite Male Athlete.
According to Newsweek Tony Hawk is
one of the most recognizable athletes in the
United States. So get out there and skateboard
your troubles away! Information found at: Tony Hawk Official Web
site, Tony Hawks Biography, Oct. 14, 2002

Happy Teriyaki is located at
5103 Capitol Blvd. Tumwater,
WA 98501 or 1107 College
Street, Suite A Lacey, WA

In my opinion, I think
that Happy Teriyaki is a
great restaurant and I would
give it four and a half out of
five stars.
Happy
Teriyaki is a very
well known local
restaurant. Quite
a few people I know from class
or Y-care have been there at
least once and enjoyed it. You
can get a small but tasty vari-
ety of Japanese food like noo-
dles, chicken, pork, beef, and
shrimp. If you’re more of a
salad person, try the Love
Salad with their super tasty
dressing.
Isaac T., in Ms. Brig-
ham’s class, said “I have been
there three times and enjoyed
it two out of the three.” Also,
Mrs. Wolf says, “I’ve been to
the one on College St. and I
have the chicken teriyaki with
the fried rice because I think
that’s very flavorful.”
The menu states that
prices range from $7.25 to
$9.00 at the most, which I

teacher friend recommended it to
me. I love Khan Academy. The
idea of providing quality educa-
tion to anyone, everywhere is
really exciting, because it gives
people the tools to increase their
understanding and knowledge-
base wherever. There have been
several times where my class has
watched some videos together,
and that really helped the class.
It’s hard to use Khan Academy
at school because our servers are
so slow, but I’d still recommend
this website to teachers, stu-
dents, and parents.”

It was founded by Salman

grader in Mrs. Brigham’s
class said “I think it is a great
website to learn stuff for
school and I would recom-
mend it to other students.”
Hey teachers, did you
hear? If you get accounts for
all your students you can
track their progress. If stu-
dents are struggling, you can
add lessons that will help
them. Mr. Cahill, a sixth
grade teacher uses this pro-
gram and said, “I first

Cimorelli: an amazing singing group Staff writer/typist: Mira Smith
Are you ever bored at home with nothing to do? Are all the bands these days
too plain? Need something to listen to? If you answered yes to one or more of the pre-
vious questions, then keep reading!
Cimorelli became a famous singing group on Youtube by singing covers of
popular songs. They are signed to Universal Record's Island label.
The group is made up of 6 sisters, Christina (21), Katherine (19), Lisa (18), Amy (16), Lauren (13),
and Dani (11) Cimorelli. The sisters 0162901 were raised in Sacramento, California with their 5 brothers.
The Cimorelli sisters were introduced to music by their mother, Lynne, a college music major, composer, and
former choir director. She taught the girls classical piano, three-part barbershop harmonizing, and vocal
jazz. In 2002, the oldest three sisters began to perform locally and soon recruited the other sisters once they
were old enough. Experienced in musical theatre, dance and acting, the sisters are highly skilled in the per-
forming arts. In 2007, five of the six girls launched a vocal group and released a self-titled album in 2008.
Cimorelli was born! In 2009, after posting a very energetic cover of Party In The USA by Miley Cyrus, Sara
Stennett, who is the manager of Jessie J, agreed to manage Cimorelli. Stennett helped them sign a record
deal with Universal in April 2010. The entire family of 13 then moved to southern California so the girls
could pursue their music career.
Their latest album, The Cim Fam EP, released on December 6, 2011 and featured four cover songs
(Skyscraper by Demi Lovato, Dynamite by Taio Cruz, Price Tag by Jessie J, and What Makes You Beautiful
by One Direction) with a Christmas cover (All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey) and one origi-
nal (Million Bucks).
For more information about Cimorelli, (with your parent's permission) go to their website, cimorellimu-
sic.com. They may inspire you!
Always follow your dreams, no matter how far-fetched they are. The Cimorelli sisters did just that
and look at where they are now!
