Minutes of the Meeting for EAA Chapter 172April 19, 2014

We had this meeting one week after the usual date because the Augusta, Georgia, Masters golf tournament events were held April 7 to 13. The temperature was cold, in the lower 50s, and it was raining. Before the meeting eleven members, their families, and guests enjoyed the delicious eggs, bacon, sausages, biscuits and grits masterfully prepared by chef Sid Brown assisted by a couple members. Because of the rain no planes flew in. At 9:11 AM club president Sid Brown gave the invocation and everyone ate. The short business meeting started around 9:46 AM. Sid

thanked those who came out in the cold and rain to the breakfast. Members also expressed thanks to Frances Weiss who had set out the materials so that the clubhouse and tables could be decorated with Easter and Spring décor.

Old Business: Joe Britt moved to accept the minutes for the March 8th meeting. Ron Haley seconded the motion and the club members approved the motion unanimously. Ron Haley remarked that at the recent Sun ‘n Fun fly-in (April 1 – 6) there was a great light show on Saturday evening.

New Business: Our next event will be the Boshears SkyFest April 26 & 27 at Daniel Field. President Brown said that besides other “goody bag” items, there will be free food for those pilots/passengers flying in.

President Brown remarked that we should contact our representatives in the U.S. Congress regarding the legislation about obtaining a pilot certificate for VFR flight using only an automobile driver’s license, not a third-class medical. House and Senate legislation would exempt pilots who make noncommercial VFR flights in aircraft weighing up to 6,000 pounds with no more than six seats from the third-class medical certification process. Pilots would be allowed to carry up to five passengers, fly at altitudes below 14,000 feet MSL, and fly no faster than 250 knots.

The April club social eat-out will be at 6:30 PM on April 24th at Prime Steakhouse, 316 Richland Ave. W, Aiken, South Carolina.

Charlie Connell moved to adjourn the meeting. Richard Fender seconded the motion. The membership approved the motion unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 10:09 AM.

Boshears SkyFest 2014Airshow and Fly-in

April 26 – 27

The weather was perfect Saturday and Sunday, sunny in the upper 70s to low 80s. Perhaps it did get a bit warm Sunday afternoon. According to visiting pilots, the winds aloft were somewhat higher than expected, but still low enough so that they didn't give any problems. Our club members handled the Flightline -- parking of aircraft for the fly-in, the EAA 172 Information Tent, the History Tent, and the People Movers carrying visitors around the airfield. There were more than 41 GA (General Aviation) planes that flew in. There were many visiting restored vintage, military and other large aircraft. Club members Greg Connell and Gary Ward gave spectacular aerobatic performances on both days.

EAA 172 appreciates all those who volunteered to help with our activities at Boshears.Below are those who helped out:

Dorothy King CrawfordWith deep regret, EAA 172 announces the passing of member Dorothy King Crawford.

Funeral services for Dorothy King Crawford, 67, of Trenton, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014, in the Chapel of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethematch the National Bone Marrow Matching Registry. Dorothy loved her family, her pets, and her award-winning needlework. In addition to being a loyal Army wife for 45 years and mother to Scott she worked for the Army, the Air Force, and the Department of Defense. She was the past president of the Biscayne Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) and held several other positions in support of EGA. After having moved over 23 times to a wide variety of places in the

United States, Germany, and Belgium, Dorothy selected Aiken as the area where she wanted to live. She has greatly enjoyed living with her friends and neighbors at the Twin Lakes Airpark, traveling to beautiful places, and the good times with her stitching companions in the Aiken Stitching Belles of the EGA, the American Needlepoint Guild, and the Birtwistle Sampler Guild. She was also a member of the Aiken-Augusta Chapter of the West Point Society, Chapter 172 of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Aiken Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.Survivors include her husband, Jerry Crawford; a son, Scott Crawford (Tami) of Clarksville, TN; a brother, Herb King (Purim) of West Chester County, NY and a granddaughter, Fallon Crawford.

(Dorothy Crawford's Obituary with comments)

AVIATION QUESTION OF THE MONTHAnswer to last month’s question: Is it necessary, when departing from a nontowered satellite airport that lies within Class D airspace, to contact the tower of the primary airport?

According to AOPA and the FAA: Yes; FAR § 91.129(C)(2)(ii) specifies the correct procedure for this situation. It reads, “From a satellite airport without an operating control tower, you must establish and maintain two-way radio communication with the ATC facility having jurisdiction over the Class D airspace area as soon as practicable after departing.” In this case the primary airport tower is the controlling authority with jurisdiction over the Class D airspace. ( Source: FAR § 91.129(C)(2)(ii) )

This Month’s Question: You are flying your Cessna 182 on a VFR cross-country flight. You plan to avoid Class B airspace by remaining above it at 9,500 feet MSL, although you will be within the lateral boundaries of the Class B airspace. Is a transponder required?

AIRVENTURE 2014 NOTAM NOW AVAILABLE

The FAA has released the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), featuring arrival and departure procedures for the 62nd annual fly-in convention July 28 - August 3 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. The NOTAM, which is in effect July 25 - August 4, outlines procedures for the many types of aircraft that fly to Oshkosh for the event, as well as aircraft that land at nearby airports. This year's NOTAM cover features a photo of Van's RV aircraft on the runways of Wittman Regional Airport. It was designed by the FAA, in partnership with EAA, to assist pilots in their AirVenture flight planning. A high influx of VFR arrivals is expected to

begin at Oshkosh on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 - 27. Besides following the published arrival and departure procedures in the AirVenture NOTAM, pilots should maintain high vigilance in watching for other aircraft. Pilots are expected to have a copy of the NOTAM available for in-flight reference. You can download the NOTAM on the Website (1.74 mb PDF). You may also request the print version by calling EAA Membership Services at 800-564-6322 [EAA members only]. Printed copies will be mailed in early May after the FAA completes printing the NOTAM. Additional hints and tips for pilots arriving at and departing from EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2014 are available online. (Information adapted from EAA Hotline 04/17/14 and the FAA)

NEW NATIONAL EAA WEBSITELast week, EAA launched its newly restructured flagship website, www.EAA.org, bringing together its family of websites under a single banner, with faster, state-of-the-art navigation, integration with mobile devices, and a bold new look. "EAA's main website has served us very well for nearly a decade, but EAA members and other aviation enthusiasts require digital and

web services that meet today's technology," said Rick Larsen, EAA's vice president of marketing.

This writer tested it on May 3rd and found that a number of features do not work or do not work well. For one, the Calendar has not been fixed up properly, almost like what happened to the U.S. Government health care Website. EAA was contacted and said that their “IT people will be fixing it in a couple weeks.” It seems that the hundreds of old links to events on the former Website do not currently work. Also, if you want to add an event, that feature does not work either. Also, it is very difficult to locate an event, unlike the “old” Website. EAA member services has to be contacted by phone or e-mail to enter a new event. The “new” Website also seems much more confusing than the “old” one.

NAME THAT PLANE

Pitcairn PA-5 Mailwing

They were sturdy, solid, respected for their ability to do the job for which they were designed—and no more demanding on the pilot than a 1920s biplane should be. Their mission was to transport the U.S. mail by air (often by night). In 1928, Harold Pitcairn's Mailwing entered service from New York to Atlanta. The mail was carried in a fireproof metal-lined compartment forward of the pilot's cockpit.

You may already be familiar with the Pitcairn Autogiro, invented by Juan de la Cierva of Spain and developed further by Harold F. Pitcairn. However, you may not be aware that Pitcairn was an aviation pioneer in other ways, playing important roles in the development of airmail service and the helicopter. He began in aviation at a time when the public was afraid to fly, and his dream was to develop an inexpensive and safe aircraft that would change that public perception. Driven by such economic advantages, the government offered contracts to fly the mail. Pitcairn was successful in winning first a New York-to-Atlanta route and then an Atlanta-to-Miami route. At the time, Pitcairn was already in the aviation business, building aircraft for ride hopping, flight training, and personal sport. The PA–5 was the first Mailwing. The Mailwings were constructed using chromoly steel tube and square-section spruce spars with spruce and plywood built-up ribs. The fuselage was faired using wooden formers and covered with fabric. The tail sections were built up from steel tube and fabric-covered. The Pitcairn Mailwing had a ground-adjustable fin and in-flight adjustable tailplane, features not often seen in other aircraft. The undercarriage was of outrigger type with Oleo-Spring shock absorbers and disc brakes on the main wheels. All models looked very similar; changes were minor, with several fuselage extensions being the most obvious. The Mailwings were flown extensively by the U.S. Air Mail service from 1927 until the end of dedicated Air-Mail routes. 32 original PA-5 production version 1927 models with Wright J-5-9 engines were built.
