THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED AT ARBORY LODGE,

PADIHAM, LANCASHIRE

1841 to 1911

The following account has been compiled from the Censusreturns for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 & 1911

Arbory Lodge was built as a gate house at the entrance to the

Huntroyde estate, the home of the Starkie family of Lancashire, in

about 1790.

Guy Piers Starkie inherited Huntroyde Hall from his uncle Edmund in

1955, but the family link with the ancient hall was severed in 1983

when he sold the hall to the Duerden family.

It may have been about this time when Arbory Lodge was sold.

1841

Census records begin in 1841 and they record a joiner named

Nicholas Bertwistle living at the Lodge together with his wife Ann

and Leonard, their 2 year old son. Both Ann and Nicholas arerecorded as being born about 1821 and were 20 years old. They may

have been older than this because they give the different birth date

of 1817 on subsequent census returns. Ten years later the 1851

Census records them as being 34 years old. By then they had moved

to Jame Street and had Emma (9), Samuel (7), Thurza (4) and

Thomas (1). Although Nicholas was born in Padiham Ann came from

Whalley. By 1851 Bertwistle is spelt with an 'i' instead of the 'e' but

these are clearly the same people.

1851

We do not know when the Bertwistle family moved out of Arbory

Lodge or if anyone else lived there before the next census but In the

1851 Census, Arbory Lodge was home toJohn Speak, an agricultural

labourer working for the Huntroyde Estate, and his wifeAlice.

Both were local. John was born at Simonstone around 1819, while

Alice was born at Read in 1820. The pair married at St Leonard's

Church, Padiham, in 1842. They had two children Amos age 7 and

Ann age 5 in 1851. Both were born in Simonestone which suggests

that they may have only moved to Arbory Lodge sometime after

Ann was born in about 1846.

1861

The Speakfamily were still living at the Lodge in 1861. The addresswas given as the 'Arbory Gate Keepers House' and Alice described

herself as the 'Gatehouse Keeper' in the 1861 census returns. By

then she was widowed.

By 1861Alice had four children living with her at the Lodge.Amos

now 17 andAnn (15) ,but called Nancy, were joined byAlice (10)

and Mary(6).

At 17 Amos was a 'Bobbin Carrier at a Cotton Factory and Ann

worked as a 'Power Loom Cotton Weaver'.

1871

Alice (50),Amos (25) and Mary Speak(16) were still living at Arbory

Lodge at the time of the 1871 Census. By this time Alice was 50 and

was reduced to taking in laundry.

Amos contributed somewhat to the family income by working as a

cotton warehouseman, and Mary worked as a general servant. Like

her mother and father before her, Mary went on to be married in St

Leonard's Church, in 1876, to Henry Myers, a rope maker in thetown.

Not long after this, her mother went to live with her daughter and

son-in-law at 5 Church Street, Padiham.

1881

By 1881 the Lodge was occupied by Mary Wilkinson (67) who was

born in 1814 at Halsall in Lancashire. She lived there with her son

John T Wilkinson. John, born in Padiham, was 27 years old and

worked as a 'General Messenger'.

1891

In 1891 the Berry family lived at the Lodge. Like Mary Wilkinson

Thomas Berry had been born in Halsall, Lancashire. Like John

Wilkinson Thomas, he worked as a 'General Messenger'. He was 30

years old and had been born in 1861. He was married to Jane who

had been born in Burscough, Lancashire in 1864. At the time of the

census Jane worked as a 'Laundress'. Was there any family or other

connection between the Berrys and the previous occupants?

1901The 1901 Census lists Arbory Lodge as 'not occupied' at the time of

this Census

1911

Sometime after 1901 the Lodge was occupied by Fred(40) and Mary

(41) Darby. For the first time, that we know of, the Lodge was the

home to people from outside of Lancashire. According to the Census

Fredwas born about 1871 at East Dereham in Norfolk and Mary, his

wife, about 1870 in South Moulton, Devon. Fred worked for

Huntroyde as an 'Estate Labourer'. They had been married for 8

years.

Post 1911

Unfortunately, the census records for more recent years will not be

released for a long time and it is difficult to find who might have

lived at the Lodge after Fred and Mary Darby.

We do know that someone named M. Lawwas living at the Lodge in

1953.

Roderick and Jane Grimshawdid all, or most of the modernisation

and extension we see today at the north west part of the Lodge, and

were listed as being there in 1980. The cricket field side of the Lodge

remains in the ownership of the Huntroyde Estate.

Ian and Susan Perrowfollowed around five years later.

In October 2004 the gatehouse was put up for sale by the thenowners,Jack Beck and his partner Wendy Welch, who were moving

to America.

Mark and Kath Askew bought the north west side and together

with their son Neil and daughter Ruth.
