I never cease to be amazed at what wecan learn from birds of prey. After 40

years working in raptor conservation, I amstill discovering new facts, but one hasremained constant: We need them as muchas they need us.

Consider these examples:

• In the 1960s, Peregrine Falcons showedus the dangers of the pesticide DDT in ourenvironment. Today, they demonstratethe persistent and pervasive nature of oilspills that linger far beyond the initialclean-up.

• Asian vultures alerted us to the unintended consequences of new pharma-ceutical contaminants in the food chain.

• Aplomado Falcons helped us recognize the value of high-quality grasslandshabitat.

• From California Condors, we saw how lead poisoning from spent ammuni-tion in hunter-harvested game kills wildlife and potentially affects humans.

Whenever a bird of prey is in trouble, it’s a sign that we may be, too. If weremain alert and vigilant to these warnings from our feathered friends, how-ever, we can try to correct the ecological imbalances that threaten our naturalworld.

Hands-on conservation is, and always has been, the hallmark of The PeregrineFund. A relentless focus on birds of prey has allowed us to become a globalleader in raptor conservation since 1970.

A key component of achieving our goals is recognizing the unavoidable andvital role that people play in this effort. Humans are usually the reason thatspecies come close to disappearing forever, but we also are a clever speciescapable of finding a solution. That’s why we are working hard to change atti-tudes and build respect for birds of prey.

The best way to foster a conservation ethic is to give people the unique expe-rience of seeing a bird of prey up close and personal. Most people only seeraptors soaring high in the sky or perched way up in a tree, never touching orseeing them at close range. Give folks the chance to get nose-to-beak with abird of prey, however, and a whole new world opens up. The Peregrine Fundprovides that unique connection with birds of prey.

Like others in his DominicanRepublic town, Victoriano Guz-

man believed that shooting Ridg-way’s Hawks would protect the chick-ens that provide income and food forhis family. But he changed his mindafter receiving a small wire chickencoop from The Peregrine Fund. Withhis poultry now safe from predatorsof all kinds, he no longer shootshawks on sight.

Raising public awareness about theRidgway’s Hawk is a critical compo-

nent of our effort to save the species from extinction. When givenpractical solutions, we believe people like Victoriano will be betterstewards of the natural world without having to sacrifice their cul-tures or livelihoods.

The critically endangered Ridgway’s Hawk once existed through-out the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, home to the DominicanRepublic and Haiti, and its satellite islands. As the human popula-tion expanded, the hawk retreated to a small, poorly protectednational park in a rugged corner of Dominican Republic. Onlyabout 300 Ridgway’s Hawks are left in the world.

Our recovery effort includes these practical steps:

• Give away chicken coops built by local people we employ.

• Make educational visits to schools and communities near wherethe hawks are found.

• Hire local people to assist with the fieldwork that provideshands-on experience in conservation.

• Coordinate efforts to retrofit power poles to prevent bird deathsby electrocution.

Actions to address human problems are supported by a compre-hensive species recovery effort. After more than a decade ofresearch, our biologists are using an innovative technique we call“assisted dispersal” to move nestlings from unsafe areas to pro-tected habitat. The young birds are released in better protectedprivate property and supplied with food until they become inde-pendent. Now, these relocated birds are pairing up, nesting, andproducing the next generation.

Initial results are so promising that we are ramping up efforts inthe Dominican Republic to relocate many more birds and establishthree new Ridgway’s Hawk populations in the next 10-15 years. Westill have much work to do to stop human persecution and findhawk-safe areas, but we are confident that our approach is practi-cal and achievable.

T roy Gunn wanted to be part of thesolution after learning from our

biologists that tiny bits of lead fromspent ammunition in the remains ofhunter-harvested game were killingCalifornia Condors. He chose to switchto copper bullets, a safer alternative,when hunting for deer in parts of Ari-zona and Utah.

Unlike lead bullets, solid copper bul-lets do not fragment and spray tinypieces of lead widely in the carcass orentrails of a deer or other animal thatcondors eat. Just a few tiny grains oflead are enough to kill or sicken a con-dor. The detrimental effects of lead arewell known in Bald and Golden Eaglesand Ravens, as well as large animalsincluding humans, coyotes, and bears.

Even in the face of a serious challengelike lead poisoning, condors continueto prove their amazing resilience. Thehistoric arrival in 2014 of a chick inZion National Park heralded the firstwild-hatched condor in Utah since re-introduction began in 1996. The chickdid not survive to fledging, but twoother wild-hatched condor chicks didtake flight and joined the Arizona-Utah flock.

Once lead is removed from their foodchain, we are confident that condorswill survive and thrive. We look forwardto the day when we no longer have tocapture each condor at least once ayear to test for lead poisoning, and wecertainly are anxious to end the 50%mortality rate among diagnosed con-dor deaths due to lead poisoning.

Thankfully, efforts by The PeregrineFund and other private and publicpartners are having positive effects onTroy and others who want to do their

part to conserve condors. Public aware-ness initiatives have resulted in up to 90% of hunters in the regiontaking steps to protect the birds from lead exposure.

For Troy, a simple switch to copper bullets allowed him to continuehunting with friends and family while protecting an iconic endan-gered species. Our long experience in raptor conservation shows thatpeople are willing to take small steps when they understand thehuge impacts on our natural world.

Amentoring program in Kenya helped Dennis Rinka, a young man from a rural Maasai family in Kenya, under-

stand how poisoning predators like lions and hyenas also killsother animals like vultures. Dennis now dreams of becominga conservation biologist and a leader in his community.

Our new Maasai Mentors program has paired dozens ofschoolchildren with biologists in the field to monitor vul-ture populations and understand that predator poisoningis having unintended but devastating consequences onvultures in Africa. Three species of vultures in Africa areendangered, due largely to human persecution.

Dennis participated inone of our workshops tolearn about the role vul-tures play in cleaning upthe environment. Hisintelligence and enthusi-asm caught the attentionof Munir Virani, directorof our Africa programs,who found Dennis onemorning staring at atoaster, the first he hadever seen. Munir thenexplained that toastersheat bread to make ithard and dry. Incredu-

lous, Dennis flashed his dazzling smile, amused that any-one would willingly do that to perfectly good bread.

In the field, Dennis proved to be just as curious aboutwildlife as he got a lesson on why vultures matter. Helearned about non-fatal methods of controlling predatorslike lions that attack his family’s livestock, instead of the poi-son that inadvertently kills vultures. Dennis now wants tohelp create a brighter future for endangered birds of prey inAfrica.

To demonstrate non-poison controls, The Peregrine Fundprovided solar-powered lights to members of the Maasaicommunity concerned about protecting their livestock. Thelights flashed at night and proved effective at keeping lionsand hyenas at bay. We are continuing to research whetherthis solution will be effective long-term.

The Peregrine Fund places education and awareness at theforefront of our conservation programs around the world sopeople can live in harmony with threatened and endan-gered birds of prey. Armed with education and effectivetools, people are learning new habits that protect raptors –while also protecting their own families, livelihoods, andcommunities.

African Vultures

Eagle Scout Karthik Mouli is alarmed at the continuing declinein American Kestrel populations, so he and his troop built and

placed nest boxes for kestrels to raise their young. Karthik moni-tors the boxes regularly and reports his data on our website.

He is part of a growing legion of citizen scientists who are gaininghands-on experience and contributing to a solution through ourAmerican Kestrel Partnership. The information he and hundreds ofothers submit to the Partnership is building a database that profes-sional researchers can use to determine why kestrel populationsare in trouble and how to stem the decline.

Our Partners have registered more than 1,600 nest boxes acrossNorth America and recorded over 6,000 observations about eggproduction, hatching, and fledglings. We have observed that Part-ners who monitor more than 10 nest boxes are more likely to mon-itor them in the detail required to determine nest success. That’swhy we are especially interested in participants like Karthik whoare willing to install and monitor a trail of nest boxes.

Causes for the decline are likely to bethings related to human activity, suchas habitat loss and the use of poisonsand harmful chemicals. When theproblem is better understood,answers and actions will follow.

The Partnership provides a way forparticipants to support conservationand have a personal stake in a suc-cessful outcome. Their lives are thericher for it—and vulnerable specieslike the kestrel are, too.

We believe people want to be good stewards of the natural world,thus ensuring that our monitoring and research projects have long-lasting results as we implement conservation strategies.

Northern Aplomado Falcon

Our releases of captive-bred falcons to thewild have resulted in a small but self-sus-taining population along the Texas GulfCoast. We are monitoring these endangeredbirds, maintaining artificial nest structures,and focusing on habitat restoration toensure their long-term survival. Our goal is

to ultimately see these falcons removed from the EndangeredSpecies List.

Gyrfalcon

Our first field season in Alaska concludedwith a computer full of data and incrediblephotos from nest cams in Alaska. The infor-mation collected will help us understandhow a changing climate might affect Gyr-falcons and their prey in the fragile Arctictundra.

Orange-breasted Falcon

The current status of these birds in CentralAmerica appears to be in steep decline withresident pairs known only in Guatemala,Belize, and Panama. FY14 was a slightly bet-ter-than-average year with eight wildyoung fledged from 14 active eyries. Morecaptive-bred birds were released to bolster

remnant populations.

Harpy Eagle

We are filling the knowledge gap for thisspecies by studying the eagles’ tolerance forhuman activity, survival rates, breedingbehavior, and other facets of this iconic rain-forest raptor. Two of the five eagles founddead in 2014 were discovered by local peo-ple who are vital to our research efforts. All

the birds appeared to have died from natural causes.

Philippine Eagle

We work in partnership with the Philip-pine Eagle Foundation to conserve thiscritically endangered icon of the tropi-cal rain forest. Recent accomplishmentsinclude researching range and habitat,engaging local communities, conduct-ing education and outreach, and provid-

ing scientific information to policymakers.

Asian Vultures

Our surveys are showing more stablevulture populations in many areas as aresult of efforts to eliminate the veteri-nary use of diclofenac, a drug that istoxic to vultures. After The PeregrineFund discovered that diclofenac causedthe catastrophic decline in vulture pop-

ulations in the late 1990s, India, Pakistan, Nepal, andBangladesh banned its use for cattle and other livestock.

East Africa

In addition to our work with vultures,we monitored African Fish Eagles andAugur Buzzards to understand theeffects of habitat change on populationdynamics. A Martial Eagle was fittedwith a transmitter to begin studyingbehavior and survival in this wide-rang-

ing and potentially vulnerable species.

Madagascar

The creation of permanent protectionfor three community-based conserva-tion sites will sustain the naturalresources that birds of prey need to sur-vive. We are assisting local associationswith writing management plans,replanting forests, and creating eco-

nomic opportunities that are sustainable and environmentallysound to conserve the Madagascar Fish Eagle and other rap-tors found nowhere else on Earth.

Peregrine Falcon

Annual trapping of migrating falcons on the Texas GulfCoast has produced data on the environmental effects ofthe 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. An analysis of samplescollected with our partner Earthspan has been published inthe Journal of Ecotoxicology.

Golden Eagle

We are studying the effects of the Altamont Pass Wind Farmon nest occupancy and reproduction in the Diablo Moun-tains of California. Nest sites on White Sands Missile Rangein New Mexico are being measured and mapped to ensureno negative effect on this federally protected species.

Wind energy

Mortality rates of raptors, other birds, and bats were meas-ured at the Mountain Air Wind project in Idaho to betterunderstand possible risks to wildlife.

Genetics

Molecular genetic data is used to help preserve biodiversityand can be useful in prioritizing conservation efforts. Recentprojects have provided important genetic information onfalcons, vultures, owls, and other birds of prey.

Scientific publications

Our staff and associates produced 36 publications, includingfive book chapters, 26 technical papers, two thesis/disserta-tions, two popular articles and one book. We co-hosted theWorldwide Raptor Conference in Argentina and spoke atconferences in India, Kenya, Montana, and Texas.

Tundra Conservation Network

The second meeting of this international panel, which we formedin 2014 as part of our Gyrfalcon Conservation Project, will be heldin 2015 to organize and launch coordinated research among themembers, who represent all nations in the Arctic tundra.

Neotropical Raptor Network

A semi-annual newsletter, conferences, and a web-based forumpromote raptor research and conservation by enhancing commu-nication and collaboration among scientists, conservationists, andnaturalists in Latin America.

African Raptor Network

This forum and website serves as a platform for raptor biologistsand enthusiasts to discuss and exchange ideas and collaborate onraptor conservation in Africa.

Library and Global Raptor Information Network (GRIN)

The Research Library and GRIN provide critical access to informa-tion for bright minds to conduct the research that saves birds ofprey around the world, without regard to financial status. This isthe “local” library to the world, even in countries where librariesdon’t exist. Its PDF program enables anyone to obtain documentsfor completing research.

Our visitor center attracts 30,000 visitors a year who learn aboutbirds of prey through live bird demonstrations, hands-on activities,interactive displays, and encounters with volunteer docents andstaff. Off-site activities increase our visibility in the community andraise awareness of our programs, changing hearts and minds tosupport raptor conservation worldwide.

Archives of Falconry

Donations enhance this one-of-a-kind collection of items relatedto falconry around the world. The annual rendezvous drew a largecrowd and several more names were added to the Wall of Remem-brance where friends and families honor their loved ones. Twice-a-day public tours of our Smithsonian-quality exhibit create aware-ness and support for this ancient World Heritage sport.

Neotropical Science and Student Education

Small grants and supervision of seven graduate students fromArgentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuelaproduced information that will contribute to the body of scienceabout raptors, many of them little known or understood. Thesepromising students will become leaders in their native countries,thus meeting our goal to increase local capacity for raptorresearch and conservation.
