WHAT AM I GOING TO DO

WHEN I RETIRE?

More than a few people have asked me that question. So, I made a list:

Play more with Paula.

Spend more time with the kids, grandkids.

Visit Glacier National Park before the glaciers melt, hike the Grand Canyon—south rim to north

rim, spend two weeks at Yellowstone, see the Red Woods and Yosemite.

Explore new fields of ministry and mission beyond the local church.

Learn to speak Spanish fluently.

Become involved in a mentor program for elementary children.

Get down to my ideal body weight and maintain it.

Ride Oklahoma Freewheel.

Publish some photographs.

Run one more marathon.

Understand Islam.

Play the guitar again and write songs.

Have a huge vegetable garden.

Purchase and maintain rental property.

Camp in the popup once a month.

Write and publish a book.

Make a Christian mini-movie.

Pay off the house in ten years (2026)

Go snow skiing.

10 more things I haven’t thought of yet.

Can I and will I accomplish everything. I doubt it. But won’t it be fun to line through about

a third of my list as I do them.

C.S. Lewis said, “You are never to old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” I think

Lewis was on target. Walt Disney once said, “All dreams come true if you have the courage to pur-

sue them.” Right on! Someone else said, “Dreams don’t work unless you do.” Just one more anony-

mous quote I ran across recently, “You've gotta wake up every morning and ask yourself, ‘How bad

do you want it?’ How much work are you willing to put forth for the things and the people you want

and need in your life? Nothing great comes without effort. But I promise you that if it’s something of

great meaning in your heart and something you need in your life … Every risk. Every step and every

drop of sweat will be worth it.”

This is MY list of things I want to do when I retire … but it comes with a prayer:

“Dear God, if today I lose my hope,

please remind me that YOUR

plans are better than

MY dreams.”

In His Love, Martin
