American Heart MonthThe Picayune cares about your heart

February is American Heart Month, and we have answers to your health questions. Turn to page 3 for heart-health advice from Dr. Elissa Thompson, who is a cardiologist with Austin Heart and practices at the Marble Falls location, 1800 Mormon Mill Road. And, tune in to KBEY 103.9 FM/Radio Picayune at 7:50 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in February to hear more from Dr. Thompson.

For 10 years on Donkey Day in this Burnet County town, Pawnee has been forecasting the changing of the seasons

BERTRAM — Drama rose like the needle on the thermostat as sirens blared at high noon, signaling the best prognosticator this side of the Pedernales. It was Donkey Day on Feb. 2 in Bertram, and Pawnee the miniature donkey was hungry to predict the future of the city. According to city officials, Bertram has no such mammal known as groundhogs, like the famous one in Pennsylvania that predicts the coming of spring or continuing winter. Instead, according to Bertram’s

Donkey Day proclamation: “the Chamber further decrees that a local, intelligent mammal of high regard be given the honor of forecasting spring.” At 10 years old, Pawnee has been predicting the weather for nearly as long, and gets it right more often than not. “He’s correct 75 percent of the time,” Mayor Dickie Allen said. “He’s one of the more intelligent animals in Bertram.” Pawnee predicts the weather based on what he eats. Donkey Day forecast

If Pawnee eats from a bucket of oats, it means an early spring.

If Pawnee picks the bucket filled with sweet feed, there will be an extended winter.

If Pawnee drinks out of the bucket of water, there will be “boun-teous rainfall in the next few months.”

She’ll keep looking, though. for “bounteous rainfall in the next few months.” Pawnee’s handler, 5-year-old Ella Schooler, walked the smart, uh, don-key, in front of his three choices. Try as she might to nearly dunk his head in water, it was straight to the oats for Pawnee. “He definitely chose the oats, which is a tribute to the Oatmeal Festival, and that means we’re gonna

have an early spring,” said Ken Odiorne, the judge for Donkey Day. Yes, Donkey Day has a judge. “I knew a judge,” Odiorne, a 41-year Bertram resident, said with a laugh. “I think that’s the only reason (I was chosen).” With sunny skies and a high in the mid-70s, the choice of oats wasn’t much of a surprise. “Not this year. I had oats all the way,” Allen said. “We could have used a little bit of water. I sure wish he would have been thirsty.”

Now that the spring weather is here to stay, officially, locals can begin to plan for the warm weather. “I think I’ll put out fertilizer and get ready for rain and the spring and let the grass grow,” Allen said. With such pressure to accurately predict the coming months’ weather, Pawnee seems to handle the burden like a professional. “I think, so far, he’s totally oblivi-ous to it,” Odiorne said. “He just eats what he likes. American Heart Month

What causes premature beats? When it feels like a fish out of water is flopping around in your chest, what does that mean?

— Judy H., Kingsland

Judy: That feeling you’re having is most likely “prema-ture beats.” These are extra beats that are normal and benign but can be very worrisome to experience. Premature beats happen to all of us each day, but can occur more frequently under certain circumstanc-es. For example, if you are drinking too much coffee, are under stress, have recently changed medications or have a minor electrolyte imbalance, you might sense these symptoms, called palpitations, more often. Also, people tend to sense premature beats when they are resting or relaxing despite the fact that they can occur at any time of day or night. Most of the time, reassurance from your doctor is the best medicine. In any event, it is important to find out what is causing your symptoms. Your primary doc-tor or a cardiologist might order an electrocardiogram (EKG) and some basic blood work to determine if you are anemic, if your thyroid is functioning well and the levels of certain electrolytes in your blood stream. A cardiologist also might order a 24-hour moni-tor, called a Holter monitor, to evaluate your heart’s rhythm. You should talk to your doctor about these symp-toms. More important, if these symptoms worsen or are associated with a feeling of dizziness or passing out, you should seek medical attention right away. Thanks for your great question!

“Always use a pencil, so you can correct the mistakes,” she said. Errors are common in older documents, which might be faded or were transcribed from illegible handwriting. Some information is a best guess by the person entering the official records years, decades, even centuries ago. Her most important tool, how-ever, is the computer. Websites she uses include ancestry.com and familytree.com. The most popular sites allow users to view and save important documents. You won’t find everything online, however. “Once you’ve hit a wall online, you may need to make a trip and go to the cemetery or the court-house to find out more informa-tion,” Lokey said. Probably the most important thing you can do to record your family history is to start talking to your relatives and dig through old documents. “Start with the oldest rela-tives first, before it’s too late,” Dorothy Medley said. As the society’s historian, Medley taught a class in January about how to get started building a family tree. If you missed the class, you can still pick her brain at the Family History Center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marble Falls. Located at 200 Via Viejo St., the center is open 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays. For more, call (830) 693-6545. “I always warn people that if no one shows up by 12:30, we may follow the dictates of our stomachs and leave,” Medley said. The last couple of weeks, however, she has stayed until 2:30 p.m. or later helping eager researchers. Many first-time family sleuths quickly develop a passion for the hunt. “It’s been exciting for me,” said Lokey, who has been a member of the 25-year-old Kingsland society for five years. “It’s all like a reci-pe. Pieces have been baking in my mind, and then I present a cake.” In her research, Lokey found all the ingredients for one particular family “cake” involving a name change in the early 1800s. Family lore said fear of discrimination against Germans during World War I led her family to change

its name from Von Berg to Millies. She found letters in a box of family documents that led her to believe the name change came about because of abandonment, infidelity, divorce and remarriage. The names of the four children from the first marriage were changed to their stepfather’s name, but never legally. From the letters, Lokey went online, where she found documenta-tion to prove the newly discovered information. “Any family story that has passed

down through the years has a kernel of truth,” Lokey said. “You have to put all the pieces together and use all the resources available. That’s the fun.” The Herman Brown Free Library, 100 E. Washington St. in Burnet, also has a genealogy research room. For more information, call (512) 715-5228. B U R N E T — T h e B u r n e t Chamber of Commerce is throw-ing a party Feb. 9, and the guests of honor are the residents, businesses and community itself. And you’re invited. “It’s an opportunity to recognize individuals, businesses and com-munity leaders for what they do,” said Burnet Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Winkler. “It’s really about coming together, having fun and celebrating the great people in our community.” The banquet and awards presen-tation, the chamber’s 58th annual, is taking a silver screen approach. The event is christened, “Hollywood Nights: An Evening with Our Stars.” Winkler said people are encouraged to dress up as their favorite big screen role or star. “It’s all in good fun,” she said. “We’ll have some people dressed in jeans and boots — this is Burnet after all. But we’ll have others dressed up in costume such as Marilyn Monroe. And, of course, there will be others dressed in more cocktail wear.” The banquet will be at the Burnet County Community Center, 401 E. Jackson, starting at 6 p.m. with a social hour followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The awards program starts at 8 p.m. The chamber will honor several individuals, businesses and lead-ers in categories including citizen, senior citizen, youth, large business, small business, educator, farmer/rancher and law enforcement. This year’s nominees include: n Citizen of the Year: Joann and Ben Thomas, Lottie McCorkle, Joe Vann and Brandon Evans

n Youth of the Year: Logan Skogg, Kathryn Drake and Frederick Schmidt n Senior Citizen of the Year: Barry Drake, Bessie Swindle and Joy Taylor n Large Business of the Year: The Oaks Nursing Center, Johnson Sewell Ford Lincoln and Lee Hoffpauir Chevrolet Buick n Small Business of the Year: Griffith Taxidermy, Cookie Cafe and Vitalogy Skincare. Educator, law enforcement and farmer/rancher honorees will be selected by their supervisors and administrators. The banquet also will honor Main Street Bethlehem, the annu-al Christmas event hosted by First Baptist Church in Burnet. “(Main Street Bethlehem) is such a jewel in our crown,” Winkler said. “(It brings) so many people to our community. And so many people come together to hold Main Street Bethlehem, it’s just an incredible community event. We want to give them a special recognition this year.” Tickets to the banquet are $25. The cost includes dinner, beer and wine and a dance. Winkler said tickets can be pur-chased at the chamber office, 229 S. Pierce, or from board members. If still available, tickets can be pur-chased at the door. “But, last year, we sold out before the actual date, so I recommend peo-ple buy ahead,” she said. “People can call and reserve tickets, which will hold at ‘will call’ the night of the banquet.” For more, call (512) 756-4297. MEADOWLAKES — John “Sonny” Taylor started his 85th year with a bit of a surprise. His wife, Rosemary, had told the former Marble Falls High School football player she was taking him to Fredericksburg on his birthday Jan. 26. But he must have realized something was amiss when a limou-sine pulled up at his Granite Shoals residence. Instead of Fredericksburg, Rosemary, his family and friends threw a surprise party at Hidden Falls Country Club. As Taylor ate a plate of beef tips and vegetables, he often scanned the room. And he reflected on his life. “Well, I feel younger than (85), I feel like I’m about 28,” he said with a chuckle. “I am really surprised, more so than the biggest surprise I’ve ever had. I’m very fortunate to have those kind of good friends.” Taylor played for the Mustangs during high school and graduated in 1946. He scored five touchdowns in a win against Burnet. During his playing years, Marble Falls won four district championships. Taylor earned a scholarship to Texas Lutheran, where he studied to become a coach. Once he finished his undergraduate work, he returned to Marble Falls to work but decided to

pursue a master’s degree at Southwest Texas State. After completing his master’s degree, Taylor began work-ing at North East High School in San Antonio. From coaching and teaching, he eventually moved to the adminis-tration side. Thirty-seven years later, he finally retired and returned to the Highland Lakes, where he settled in Granite Shoals “It was a good move for me (to go to North East) because I was there as a coach a year or two and became an administrator and went on up the ladder,” Taylor said. Attendees represented each phase of his life: high school chums, profes-sional friends and church buddies. He said he’s always tried to treat people the way he wanted to be treat-ed. “Try to help everybody else, and they’ll come through for you like this,” he said. “I’ve always tried to give people help. Look at all the friends I have. All real close friends.” [email protected]

MARBLE FALLS — Taking youngsters into the workplace for a day of learning can inspire them to think about and plan for their future jobs. “Some kids may have their eyes opened to different aspects and the scope of a job,” Marble Falls Noon Rotary Club member Mike Atkinson said. The nonprofit organization recent-ly hosted the 2013 Marble Falls High School Job Shadow program, which has evolved and grown stronger for more than seven years. Volunteers shuttled about 140 students for a school day to various businesses and professional facili-ties from Marble Falls and Austin to Burnet and Killeen. Career fields included nursing, psychology, social work, aviation, engineering, account-ing, business, education and enter-tainment. Rotarians even transported a group of students interested in the military to Fort Hood.

“They may change (their mind) several times between now and get-ting into college,” Atkinson said. “This gives them first-hand experi-ence.” The effort has evolved from including seniors to catering to juniors. “In years past, we would take the seniors, but some of them already had their minds made up as a major,” he said. “It’s a highlight to be able to see them and find out what they got out of what they did (during the job shadow day).” KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune and The Picayune TV participated in the program, hosting six students. Marble Falls High School junior Hunter Wall said his experience at the multimedia studios will shape his goals. “I learned a lot more about (multi-media production) than I knew in the beginning. I loved being on camera. I could see myself doing this,” Wall said. “I’m actually impressed with what they can do. It helps me to know what I’d deal with if I was actually in

this situation.” Marble Falls High School junior Brooke Stephenson added: “My favorite part was getting to edit video. It helped me find out what I really like to do. It opened my eyes.” [email protected]

MARBLE FALLS — The top high school anglers are headed for Marble Falls and Lake LBJ on March 15-17 for the 2013 Student Angler Federation Texas High School Fishing State Championship. “The Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce is very excit-ed to host the state championship,” said Bill Rives, the chamber execu-tive director. “We think the anglers and their families will enjoy our beau-tiful surroundings and the fishing on the (stable) Lake LBJ.” Earlier this year, Marble Falls High School Fishing Club sponsor Lorna Ellis and other organizers announced FLW, the federation and its parent organization, The Bass Federation, selected Lake LBJ and the local cham-ber to host the annual event. Last year’s state tournament was held at Eagle Mountain Lake near Azle. Marble Falls High School angler Ben Stripling won the event with a total of three fish weighing a little more than 8½ pounds. Ellis said there is still time for local businesses, individuals and organiza-tions to support the 2013 tournament. People can call the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce at (830) 693-2815 to learn how to help. The state championship is a two-person team event for students in grades 9-12. While the main tournament is Saturday, March 16, angler check-in

MARBLE FALLS — Burnet County Library patrons don’t have to visit their local library to check out a book thanks to the addition of an eBook collection. But don’t toss away the directions to the physical library just yet, since the eBook collection is still fairly small compared to the traditional books lining the shelves at the four community locations. “For libraries, eBooks are fairly expensive to purchase,” said Marble Falls Public Library Director Mary Jackson. “And currently, there are only four publishers who allow their books to be digitalized for libraries.” This means selections focus on the New York Times Bestsellers list, top releases and popular authors. If a reader is looking for the “The Dog Listener” by Jan Fennell, he or she should probably head to the Herman Brown Free Library in Burnet and look on the shelves under 636.008 FEN. Still, readers can now enjoy looking through the digital stacks for books they’re interested in downloading on their eReaders. The Burnet County Library eBook pro-gram, funded by the four Friends of the Library groups, supports all the major eReaders with the exception of

the original Amazon Kindles. “It has to be the Kindle Fire,” Marble Falls Assistant Library Director Amanda Rose said. “But along with the Kindle Fire, you can use the (Barnes & Noble) Nook, the Sony reader and all the Mac prod-ucts.” Patrons also can download the necessary software via their preferred eReader that supports the library pro-gram. Rose said the decision to add eBooks came from patron demand. But it has been something the library system has been studying for the past two years, since the Amazon Kindle set the bar on the eReader market. “It’s a big learning curve for us,” Jackson said. “It almost puts us in a quandary because we want to keep up with our regular book purchases, but we also want to add eBooks. The demand just keeps growing for the new technologies, but the demand for the older ways is still growing just as fast.” The eBooks and traditional books are the only items available at the local libraries. Jackson pointed out the Burnet County Library branches

carry audiobooks, DVDs and digital music. Often times, a branch might not only purchase the regular book of a title, but the large-print version, the audio version and now the eBook version as well. Patrons can begin their foray into the library eBook selection by going online to one of the four Burnet County branches — Marble Falls, Herman Brown Free, Bertram or Oakalla — and register with his or her library card. The service is avail-able to all branches. But like the traditional book, eBooks are only available one at at time. So if somebody already has the eBook version checked out, the indi-vidual wanting it can get on a waiting list. “The checkout period is the same as if it were a physical book,” Jackson said. “When your two weeks are up, the book just goes off the eReader.” The Burnet County Library sys-tem is holding two workshops on eBooks and eReaders. The programs are both Wednesday, Feb. 6. The first is 9 a.m.-noon at the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main St. in Marble Falls, and the second is 2-5 p.m. at the Herman Brown Free Library, 100 E. Washington St. in Burnet. For more, go to www.marblefalls library.org or www.hermanbrown library.org. “It’s pretty exciting for the library and the customers,” Rose said. [email protected]

Library patrons in Burnet County are a click away from reading some of their favorite books thanks to a new eBook program. Library-card holders only need to register through the library’s website to begin checking out eBooks. The Burnet County Library system is holding two workshops Wednesday, Feb. 6, to help patrons make the jump into the eBook revolution. STAFF PHOTO BY DANIEL CLIFTON
