CLUB PICNIC JULY 12, 9am – 2pm LAKE ROBINSON

Come join in the fun and great food. Your family and friends are welcome, you don’t have to be a member to be a part of this event.

The club furnishes hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, condiments and soft drinks. You furnish fruit, veggies, DESSERTS (yeah!), tea or lemonade. Hey you can even bring ribs and wings if you want to, but you gotta share!

Win a $25 WOODCRAFT gift certificate. Wear your name badge, get a free ticket. Wear a club logo, get a free ticket. Bring a carving, get a free ticket. Additional tickets available for $1 donation ($1 per ticket).

There will be a whittling contest. First place prize will be a copy of the latest issue of WOODCARVING ILLUSTRATED’s “Whittling”.

Just a few words… From John Moore, President

HOT DOGS, HAMBURGERS, MAYBE A FEW BRATS, THROW IN SOME HOT WINGS… I can’t hardly stand it. Picnic time is just a week away.

Join us on July 12, 2014 for our annual club picnic. It’s always a fun time. This year we are trying a new location: Lake Robinson. Bring the kids, the grandkids and an aunt and uncle or two.

Time seems to be flying by. I have to be thinking ahead to October, there ae TWO BIG EVENTS that Month. Our annual business meeting is in October. Our terms of office are staggered so that in any given year we only elected one half of the total board members. Be thinking and talking about who would make a good candidate for office.

And of course the other event is our annual “SCULPTURES AND DESIGNS IN WOOD”. This is our 27th show and we really need every member to take part. Somebody for the whittling contest, somebody to take tickets at the door, but more than anything we need CARVERS sitting at a display table talking to visitors. Plan on at least sharing a table with someone. Dust off those old carving, wax the new ones and have something in progress. People will be amazed at your work.

See you at the picnic; come early before all my HOT WINGS are gone!

VIC HOOD

FEATURED CARVER

We are fortunate to have Vic Hood as our featured carver this year. In 2011 Vic was selected as “CARVER OF THE YEAR” by “WOODCARVING ILLUSTRATED” magazine. To better acquaint you with Vic, here is a short excerpt from that 2011 article.

Vic’s primary interest is teaching. “I consider myself more of a teacher than anything else,” Vic said. He and his assistant, Terry Brasher, teach approximately nine classes a year, most of them in large venues like the International Woodcarvers Congress and the Western and Wildlife Workshop.

Larry Yudis, one of the Congress’ organizers, said Vic’s passion for teaching is the reason he is asked back year after year, even though officials try to mix up the classes offered at the annual Congress. “Vic is very knowledgeable in his main field of expertise, which is working with realistic human subjects,” Larry said. “When trying to convey a certain facial expression in a carving, you will find Vic mimicking that expression himself in order to give the student a visual to go by. You can see him grab a coat and hat in class and pose a certain way in order to get his point across about how a certain area of the carving should look.

“Another thing that amazes me is the fact that he can have eight, ten, or even twelve students in a class, all doing different projects and working at different skill levels. Vic can easily adapt to each situation without missing a beat,” Larry added.
