November President’s Message Looks like we are off and running to a fabulous Autumn. The leaves outside my window are beginning to change into beautiful colors and I am loving this crisp fall weather. I hope you are all enjoying your holiday quilting. Don’t forget to include some time to help with our Community Service projects. Marjorie is seeking willing workers to add to our supply of quilts for those in need. Your work is much appreciated and the recipients are truly grateful for a warm, comfy quilt, made by loving hands.

A bit of news: we are in the process of re-locating our equipment to a new storage facility in Grass Valley. On October 23, we will be packing up and moving everything down to Old Barn Storage, on Springhill Road. This is a state of the art facility, with a larger unit and convenient location.

Remember to mark Tuesday, Dec. 3 on your calendar for our annual Christmas Party. The ladies of the Sew Happy mini-group, under the leadership of Judy Hamilton, are busily wrapping prizes and creating centerpieces for a memorable evening. Message from your Vice President

2013 is soon coming to a close. One of my responsibilities is to take in “Hall of Honor” nominations and select new inductees by year-end. Currently I do not have any nominations. Page 2 of the Guild Policies found at the back of your copy of the membership roster describes the criteria for the Hall of Honor. If you are interested in nominating a deserving member of our guild, please bring your write-up to the next

guild meeting. Ruth Bertaccini will collect these in my absence. Final acceptance of nominations will be taken no later than the November 5th meeting.

Thank You ! Barbara Ceresa

Community Service and Drop In

Community Services and Drop In and Sew will be meeting once in October and twice in November to wrap up what we can for this years distribution. The items we have ready may not be enough for the demand. So, I have added an additional CS/DIS day in November – we would love to see you there.

We have approximately 33 quilts ready for quilting and about 20 tops waiting for batt and back. All of these quilts are small to medium size – our long arm quilters took the big ones! We recently “upgraded” the batting to a cotton/polyester blend which is quite nice and makes quilting a more pleasant experience. Quilting need not be elaborate – stitch in the ditch, meander, or crazy “haphazard” will work just fine. Please contact me if you cannot attend CS but would like to help.

Upcoming dates: Thursday October 17 – 9:00 – 3:00 Wednesday and Thursday, November 20 and 21 – 9:00 – 3:00. Skill Building with Lorna Tiller and Home Workshop with Sue Robertson are offered at the same location, same day.

Please join us at Community Service / DIS – come for the day or an hour or two; we provide chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter. No need to bring supplies – we also have sewing machines, new rulers and rotary cutters, fabric, and thread. Do bring a lunch or a snack.

Opportunity Quilt

Program Notes

Thom Atkins will be our speaker on November 5; his workshop, “Beads II” is scheduled the next day, November 6. The class is first and foremost about creating bezels (that which holds a stone, jewel or mirror.) The twisted rope stitch will be taught, along with creating walls with connected stacks, pico edges, and fringes.

For his workshop, you will need embroidery scissors, chain nose pliers, pins, and an Ott light. The kit fee is $35.00, which includes a Laurel Birth fabric sandwich, jewel, mirror, lots of beads, needles, pins and appropriate thread.

Call Marta Price at 274-1691 or mail at [email protected] and reserve your spot in this excellent workshop.

Don’t forget to bring your Opportunity Quilt ticket stubs and money to the November meeting! Remember you get chances for a quilt to be given away at the Holiday Party for each book returned and paid for!

Upcoming Speaker: Cindy Needham, January, 2014

Here she is! Our first speaker and workshop scheduled for January, 2014. I hope you enjoy the January speaker and all others as much as I did in choosing them. Please support the workshops because that is the only way I will know if my choices are pleasing to you.

On January 7th and 8th, Cindy Needham who is a master machine quilter, will be with us to speak about Thread, Facts and Fiction. She will also be bringing her “Open Thread Bar” to the workshop the next day. She will educate us on how to use all types of threads in your machine regardless of the manufacturer.

If you have threads you are having trouble with, please bring those to the workshop so she can help you to troubleshoot.

Party   Time! Are you ready for the holidays? With her Sew Happy mini-group providing

ideas and labor, Judy Hamilton is organizing a wonderful evening of fun and games.

Be sure to mark your calendars for December 3 at 6:30PM . Our annual holiday celebration will be an evening to remember.

There will be two raffles. One will be for a disappearing Nine Patch Quilt. Chances for this raffle will be given with your donation of non-perishable foods that will be passed on to the Nevada County Food Bank.

How many of you enjoy Bingo? Well, since we are a quilt guild, we’ll be playing “Quilto”.Fat quarters will entitle you to participate in this game. Bring one or two to join in the fun. You never

Guild ChallengeHave you picked up your words for the Guild Challenge? Time is swiftly passing, so be sure to get yours soon. I will be at the November, December and January meetings if you haven’t gotten them yet.

Just to refresh, there are three bags; one containing color words, another shapes, and the third nouns. You must use each concept in your quilt, but of course, you can add other colors, shapes or nouns to it.

For those of you who like an extra challenge, try to incorporate “30” into your quilt, celebrating our 30th anniversary as a quilt guild. Maybe you want to make 30 blocks, or 30 triangles, use 30 different fabrics, anything that helps relate your quilt to our 30th celebration. This is in addition to your challenge words, and it is entirely optional.

The quilts are due at the March Guild meeting and will be hung, admired and drooled over....but not on!

Voting will take place at that time. We will be voting for: Most Humorous, Best Applique, Best Art, Best use of Theme, and Favorite Quilt. We will also vote on best use of “30” for our anniversary.

Joy Waggoner, Patchwork Star for November, 2013

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” A quote from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Is this what husband Richard was thinking when he and Joy met way back in Virginia? Yes, Joy is a Southern girl by way of Mississippi and Texas. I don't detect a Southern accent, do you? Their lives together have included a colorful mix of adventures. In the 1970's Joy worked for the Public Broadcasting System of television, saying, “It paid better to be in technology. I was one of the first women to touch technical equipment!” Richard and Joy were both transferred from Virginia in 1980 to work for “The Group” in Grass Valley. Joy is retired, taking care of a 14-month old grandson two days a week. Richard is still in the television

technological industry.

You've so often heard that if you adopt a baby, pregnancy is certain to follow. Joy and Richard adopted twin baby boys. Four years later guess what? A miracle pregnancy at age 43! The Waggoners now have five grandsons and their youngest biological son is getting married soon. He is recently graduated from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service in International Politics and is proficient in Arabic.

Joy claims, “Quilting expertise skipped my mother's generation”, but grandma and great grandma both quilted. Twenty plus grandchildren have each received a handmade quilt fashioned from clothing scraps. Like so many of us, Joy sewed clothing in her younger years. In 1984 she was acquainted with Bertie, Betty and Myrna, three of our quilting legends. As a “newbie” Joy jumped in as our Guild's first newsletter editor using an old MAC computer.

Joy's favorite recent capacity has been to produce educational outreach plays for our local grade schools. Donna Foote wrote the play, “On the Road to California”. Joy developed costumes and a trunk show. A showman exhibiting her TV expertise, Joy's energetic spirit has been full of bounce. In her church, Twin Cities, she is instrumental in leading her quilting group there to sew quilts for children in Uganda.

Joy's spacious studio is sprinkled with a surfeit of UFO's, lined up awaiting their turn. Not to be pressured, she helps her mini group “The Cotton Club” with projects or makes what interests her in Velda Newman's book or a Jamboree class. A fabulous Janome 1600 sits front and center at a huge picture window. A Featherweight and Elna 9000 complete her repertoire. Eight years' worth of Quilter's Newsletter magazines grace neatly divided shelves; a healthy stash of fabrics spanning 30 years of collecting hide in a nearby cabinet. Admitting, “I need to clean out some of this older stuff.” I think Joy realizes those dusty rose calicos went out with the Victrola.

Surveying the Waggoner's beautiful sylvan setting of 1-1/2 acres, we saw a garden full of summer's last bounty, tall and stately pines and one resplendent maple upstaging the landscape. We remarked upon its prized rainbow shades of vivid reds, pinks and corals. Joy, always with an enthusiastic smile, concluded “Coral is my favorite color.” Well, there's a pictorial quilt waiting to happen. Get that camera out!

A joyful and genteel lady, well representing the manners of her favorite English novelist's heroine—is definitely modern in today's mindset, but also certainly swept up by a thorough enjoyment of yesteryear's romantic and classical fiction. There's nothing better than a good relaxing read when you are too tired to sew.

When researching the sites for other shows, there was no verification of dates for some of the shows listed. Another piece of information: I use a Mac computer, and occasionally the Safari browser will not find a site. That happened with the QuiltersResource.net site from last month. The problem is solved by changing my browser to Firefox. Not sure what the problem is with the Safari app.
