TEEN STRINGS Tour a Success! To start off their tour, the TEEN STRINGS Ensemble gave a beautiful performance at Music Hall as pre-concert entertainment for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. A crowd of smiling faces gathered to enjoy the music as the ensemble lit up the crowd with Capriccio Brilliante, and delighted listeners with Seitz Concerto No. 5.

Then the members of the TEEN STRINGS Ensemble packed up and headed to Cleveland, Ohio, for three days of fun and music. The group gave concerts for the Saturday String Program at Cuyahoga Community College, and at the Cleveland Music School Settlement. The TEEN

STRINGS also attended a concert of the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall, and toured the Cleveland Institute of Music, where CSP Director Dr. Vincent Phelan attended as a college student.

The TEEN STRINGS stayed in a hostel in downtown Cleveland, where they practiced their pieces before heading out to area locations to perform. (The car rides were enlivened

by an impromptu synthesizer music contest and other hilarity!) The students also visited the indoor West Side Market, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and played board games.

The 2013-14 TEEN STRINGS Ensemble members are Ariana and Jeremiah Reynolds, Nora Dukart, Veronica Phelan, Levi Swartz, Darwin Struble, Christopher Nathan, Keagan Noll, Louise McKinney, Mable Lecrone, Sarvani Vemuri, and

    Matteus Thompson.

"The Teen Strings trip was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to next year!"

She plans to major in forensic psychology. Ariana credits CSP with helping her grow as a violinist. Her younger brother, Jeremiah Aaron Reynolds, is also student in CSP, and Ariana looks forward to keeping in touch with her CSP friends. Vincent Phelan has been Arianas private teacher since she was 5 years old. Im going to miss working with Ariana, and wish her well in her college career! Vincent Phelan

    Congratulations Graduate Ariana Reynolds!

    CSP Students Play for

Peter and the Wolf CSP played on stage at the Family Fun Zone for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Lollipops Concert Peter and the Wolf in March. Held in the Ballroom at Music Hall, the Family Fun Zone preshow is a great way to introduce young children to playing an instrument. This event was especially well attended, and drew a large audience that was excited to hear CSP students. Many children quickly formed a long line to get a chance to see and play a violin, as CSP students shared their instruments with them.

Thank you to Anne Cushing-Reid, Senior Director of Community Engagement and Learning, for hosting our performance!

CSP Students Give Music for Mothers Day

On Mothers Day weekend, CSP students played at the beautiful Evergreen Retirement Community, with accompanist Lori Sams. The concert began with students Nora Dukart, Mable Lecrone and Veronica Phelan playing Brahms challenging Hungarian Dance #5, and Micah Miller joined to play Bachs Concerto for Two Violins.

A large group of students played

several classical pieces, and the Repertoire Ensemble dedicated a performance of Amazing Grace to all the mothers in attendance. Mrs. Council-Phelan also led the group in some Irish fiddling with Tobins Favorite and Willie Colemans.

The TEEN STRINGS played selections including Charlotte Rueggers Capriccio Brilliante. The concert finale included the younger

children, who were a particularly big hit with the audience, closing the program with folk tunes and the Twinkle Variations.

The residents commented on how good everyone sounded, and thanked the players and the Phelans for a wonderful Mothers Day present.

It was a precious program and the kids are adorable. Trudie Seybold, Evergreen Resident

Cincinnati City-Wide Suzuki Violin Play-In Brings Together Suzuki Students and Teachers

In March, CSP hosted the 5th Annual Cincinnati City-Wide Suzuki Violin Play-In at the Muntz Hall Auditorium on the campus of the University of

    Cincinnati - Blue Ash.

The event began with a lively performance by CSP's TEEN STRINGS, who played Rigaudon, from Edvard Griegs Holberg Suite, and Duke Ellingtons It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't Got that Swing). The large, appreciative audience also enjoyed listening to Uptown Strings, another advanced teenage ensemble from Cincinnati directed by Heidi Flanders and Weiyi Li. Next, thirteen Suzuki teachers performed Jealousy, a Tango

written for violins and piano by Jacob Gade.

After these delightful musical appetizers came the main course: a play-down of Suzuki repertoire, beginning with advanced pieces from Book 8 all the way to Book 1. The concert ended with all the students in attendance playing the Twinkle Variations together- a thrilling sight, which certainly would have pleased Dr. Suzuki!

We appreciate the following teachers who participated in the Teacher Ensemble, and lead students in the concert: Amy Cluggish, Heidi Flanders,

Amanda Hall, JaeEun Lee, Weiyi Li, Greg Noland, Vincent Phelan, Elizabeth Council- Phelan, Carolyn Quinn, Marva Rasmussen, Miks Silis, Claire Timmerman, Myra Yeung

Thank you to Play-In host UC- Blue Ash, and College Conservatory of Music Assistant Dean Amy Dennison. We are also grateful to this years event sponsors:

Fall Solo Recital In November, families and friends gathered in the St. Monica-St. George Parish Hall to enjoy the Fall Solo Recital. The large audience enjoyed beautiful music highlighting the progress made by each student throughout the year. Some of the more advanced performances included Bruchs Concerto in G minor, Kabalevskys Concerto in C major, and a duo for violin and viola by Handel/Halvorsen.

Special student achievements were also recognized.

The CSP community also said goodbye to Martine Yang, who learned both to play violin and to speak

English during the six months she was part of CSP. She and her family will be missed as they return to China. Her father was a Visiting Scholar at the

    University of Cincinnati.

The concert ended with a delightful medley of holiday songs played by Elizabeth and Vincent, and a surprise visit by Santa, who came to town early to praise the young musicians on their wonderful performances!

A special thank you to pianist Della Enns who accompanied the performers, and to the volunteers who provided the reception.

Young CSP students provided pre-concert entertainment for the Yes, Virginia show with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in December. A large audience of both children and adults assembled to enjoy the performance.

The concert began with Dr. Vincent Phelan and the youngest students (Natalie Nguyen, Audrey Nordin, Jill Hamilton and Rodrigo Carpinteyro-Martinez) demonstrating good bow holds and performing the E String Concerto. Mrs. Elizabeth Council-Phelan led members of the Repertoire

Ensemble (Micah Miller, Anna MacLennan, Sydney Brigger, Trinity Tankersley, Christopher and Allie Nathan) as they delighted the audience with several Christmas carols and played Sunny Mexico wearing their sombreros. The students also performed some Suzuki repertoire, wrapping up their performance with the Twinkle Variations.

Thank you to Kathy Jorgensen-Finley, Director of Community Engagement and Diversity, for arranging our performance!

    Artistic Directors Letter

Thank you for your support of our annual Spring Recital and Raffle! Fundraising activities make our program affordable for families, and enable us to provide music to underserved audiences in the Greater Cincinnati area. The raffle is also a great way to inform others about the Suzuki method and CSP, as students go out in the community to play their violins as they sell tickets. There are many wonderful donated prizes,

and this year the grand prize is a Hot Air Balloon Ride!!

Keep up violin skills during summer break.

While its important to take a deep breath and relax after a busy school year, its also important to maintain the violin skills that your child has worked so hard to develop. Sit down with your child and write down realistic, attainable and fun goals for music study progress over the summer.

Continue private lessons. Plan a book recital with your teachers approval, or hold an informal performance of your favorite pieces at a nursing home, or for friends and family. Invite a friend over to play duets! Other activities that will make the summer productive are to attend the CSP Summer Camp, or an out-of-town Suzuki Institute.

Most importantly, take time to have fun with your child and music this summer!

Student News Louise McKinney received a "1" rating (Superior) at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Solo and Ensemble Contest in April. She played Concerto in A minor. Op. 3, No 6, 1st movement, by Antonio Vivaldi. In addition to playing the violin, Louise is a member of the Walnut Hills High School Senior Choir. The choir has qualified for the OMEA State Competition to be held in May.

Darwin Struble plays double tenor steel drum in Steel Vibe, the Clark Montessori 9th Grade Steel Band. The group played for a benefit concert in April, which raised money for the Hamilton County Society for the Prevention of

    Cruelty to Animals.

Veronica Phelan played viola in the Moeller High School musical, Sweeney Todd in May. She also enjoys playing violin in the Filo String Quartet at Walnut Hills High School which performs for school and community events. Veronica travelled with the Walnut Hills Chamber Orchestra to New York City to perform at Lincoln Centers Alice Tully Hall this past winter. She will travel to Vermont this summer for the Green Mountain Chamber Music

    Festival.

Sarvani Vemuri is concertmistress of the Walnut Hills High School Senior Orchestra. She performed as violin soloist in the first movement of Vivaldis Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in A minor on May 20th. Sarvani also participated in the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest in April, and received a Superior rating.

Mable Lecrone composed several pieces of music for her 8th grade project at the Waldorf School. Members of the TEEN STRINGS Ensemble Nora Dukart, Veronica Phelan, Matteus Thompson, Ariana Reynolds and CSP assistant Lee Griffith recorded her composition for violins, viola and cello. Mables advisor for her project was Adam

Peterson, a staff accompanist at the Waldorf School.
