All-Aluminium Space frame Chassis
Spyker has put tremendous efforts in the space frame performance of the C8 Aileron,
specifically the structure’s efficiency. The utilisation of modern finite element and
numerical optimization methods has allowed Spyker’s engineers to arrive at an
exceptionally stiff structure of 22.000Nm/degree. Rigidnode and load-path technology
has been employed in order to ensure that the minimum amount of aluminium is
used to achieve this performance, thus reducing the overall weight of the vehicle. The
dynamic stiffness characteristics of the structure have been carefully tuned in order
to minimize unwanted cabin noises and vibrations, which may otherwise detract
from the driving experience. These technologies and measures have allowed Spyker
to arrive at the most efficient chassis in its history.
The C8 Aileron’s design is heavily inspired by Spyker’s aviation
heritage, as was the case with all previous models, but with a
clear emphasis on the second-generation aircraft propulsion:
the turbine rather than the propeller that adorned so many
elements of the first-generation cars. Similarly the “Aileron”
name pays tribute to that aviation heritage.
SPYKERC8 AILERON
- A COMPLETELY NEW CAR
Design
The design of the hand-crafted Spyker C8 Aileron
represents the latest evolution of Spyker’s signature
architecture, which is prominently inspired by the
company’s aviation heritage. In the first-generation
cars, the propeller design was consistently applied to
many elements of the cars. Within the design of the
new Spyker C8 Aileron, the emphasis was shifted from
the propeller propulsion to the turbine propulsion. As a
result, for instance, the bright polished air inlets were
converted into turbine-engine shaped air scoops.
To enhance the aerodynamic performance of the car,
several changes in styling were made, such as stretching
the canopy backwards. Most of the shark-like gills have
been abandoned, which results in a cleaner, smoother
appearance. The front end is now characterised by a
larger grille that gives additional cooling. Also the rear
diffuser was redesigned for improved functionality.
An extra spoiler has been placed under the diffuser,
providing additional downforce to boost the ground
effect produced by the diffuser. Sometimes practicality
gains over design: the split side windows with the
characteristic metal frame have been replaced by
single-pane side windows that are fully retractable,
improving driving comfort.

Rear - 332 diameter vented and cross-drilled steel brake discs.
Interior
Thanks to the longer chassis, the Spyker C8 Aileron has more interior space, which
results in a higher comfort level and improved ergonomics. The interior, with its
typical attention to detail, is made of the highest quality leather, from the Litano
range of the Dutch Royal Tannery Hulshof. The leather interior is available in 14
standard colours, but any other colour – if desired by the customer – can be ordered
as an option. Driver and passenger sit low, close to the car’s centre of gravity, where
they can feel the car reacting to the input of the driver, for a direct and sporting
connection between car and driver. The dashboard was completely redesigned
to suit the new Spyker identity and to improve ergonomics and functionality. Air
vents are designed in turbine style and the performance and distribution of the air
conditioning was improved significantly. A multifunctional LCD display is integrated
between the speedometer and the odometer. The middle console accommodates the
standard Kharma sound system (see In-Car Entertainment). Chronoswiss dials and
switches are available as an option.
In-Car Entertainment
Every Spyker C8 Aileron will be equipped as standard
with a Kharma sound system, incorporating a digital
radio, Bluetooth interface, an iPod connectivity and
a navigation system. The Kharma sound system
offers joystick controls on the central console and
a dashboard display, paired to 6 Kharma loudspeakers.
It can be extended with two optional audio packages.

Frank Fung
18 PROFILE
It all started when Mr. Frank Fung’s parents left for
Hong Kong and transferred The Pines membership
to him. Today, not only is he a proud member, he has
since developed a sense of belonging with The Pines.
The name Frank Fung may not be familiar, but being
seen in the premise at least three times a week for
the past decade, anonymity is somehow a passé. He
keeps his Saturdays occupied with an early start of
table tennis with friends, followed by a rewarding
retreat at Pine Garden. Besides, his favourite past
time includes playing cards with his close buddies at
the mahjong room. One who is always surrounded by
good friends shares that he does have his intimate
moment where he sings to his heart’s content in the
private KTV room at the Waterfall Bar.
What is more impressive is how age has no
significance to his fitness and agility. Thanks to his
younger days of doing tough Karate routines like
high kicks with mementos to vouch by. Not to be
deterred by his age, he does 30-40 swim laps with
no intervals, often marking an astounding forty-
five minutes finish. At his usual table tennis games
with his friends, it was a heart-warming moment as
an onlooker to witness the group exhibited much
gaiety and humour during the playoffs.
Not much of a Club’s event goer but on food and
beverages, he likes better that the Club brings
in unique dishes where one can hardly find in
Singapore. In his remarks, he emphasised on how
the Club’s gym needed improvements in terms of
space and equipment. Comparing to hotels, their
gym facilities - a mere secondary mix are much
better then The Pines.
Speaking of service quality, Mr. Fung’s face lit up. He
enthused on how The Pines staffs are personable
and resilient to changes. The Pines’ parking privileges
and the accessibility, are plus points to keep him
coming back. At the heart of it all was how the
Management gave a face-lift to the squash courts
for players’ comfort. When asked to rate the Club
from 1-10, 10 being the best, Mr. Fung did not hesitate
to give a nearly perfect 10.
“If you always do the right things in life, you will
never go wrong.” Mr. Frank Fung does not mince with
words. He lives by the three Fs, similar to his initials
(plus one) – Firm, Fair and Forgiving. In life, it may
be easy to speak forgiveness but not act upon. He
stresses on why not just let go and live to be happy.
Perhaps, it is as the common saying goes, “Forgive
and forget”.

My first horological piece came as a gift.
Back then, I was a style cognoscenti
always “parading” my up to date
possessions. But now, I am rather loyal
to one for functionality and the rest were forsaken in the
safe. I do question pragmatism but at least I have once
indulged to the fullest. And today, if I drink and make
merry, it is my definition of happiness. Happiness being
the highest good is surely incontrovertible as an axiom
of truth. Or so the theory goes. However, this populist
approach to lifestyle has not diluted my addiction to items
newer or fiercer than what I have already own. In depth,
it has intensified my appetites for the latest must-have.
The Pines susses out what matters most in Members’ life.
So put your best foot forward in our inaugural Ballroom
Dancing on 16th March 2012 and dance like there’s no
tomorrow. The cost? An impressive dance floor and music
that sets the mood and syncopations, which is really just
pocket change for dance aficionados. The privilege of
having a unique one-of-a-kind experience? Priceless.
The thing about Singapore that most people remarked
about besides the colloquial term or Singlish – we call it, is
our food. Likewise at The Pines, our club culture lies in the
food. On 16th April, come with a monstrous appetite as we
lined up various cultural dishes fit for royals.
Since its comeback, PMBF (Pines Members Benefit Fund) should be running in its third
month by now. For members who have not heard, The Pines has pledged $200,000
into this fund, aimed to benefit members and encourage patronage. This fund will
be used on selected F&B outlets and club events where members like yourself will
reap great savings when you spend with us. How the mechanic works is very simple.
When you see the logo on our monthly food promotions or events, this means you
will pay lower than the original price. You will benefit from this funding because we
will absorb the difference between the usual price and PMBF rate. Think of it as every
time you spend on PMBF items and/or events, money goes back into your pocket!
Yours truly,
Jeffrey Leong
Cheers to more great happenings and palatable pleasures at the Club!

Interview with Chef IanBehind the MeNEWNothing beats Matsugawa with the new selection of Japanese delicacies comprising sushi, sashimi, tempura and teppanyaki dishes prepared by highly skilled chefs, finesse in the art of Japanese fine dining. We catch up with notable chef Ian Ong, the man behind the new Japanese menu.
There are many world cuisines to learn, why classic Japanese cooking?
I had to earn money for a living. I started as a part-timer in a Japanese restaurant
with no practical cooking skills. Besides, it’s the interest in Japanese culture and
cuisine that drives me to what I am today. Get to discover the exotic flavors and
yet exquisite simplicity of this classic cuisine.
What is your impression of members dining here?
I have to say they are extremely supportive and encouraging. Especially when we
hold events like Sake Night and Tuna Night, they are always the ones that never
fail to show up.
What have you discovered about the members’ tastes with regards
to Japanese food and what have you found to be the most popular dish?
Taste is always changing. They will share with us what they tasted elsewhere and
come back to describe to us. We cherish these valuable feedbacks from our loyal
members. I decided to come up with a new menu. Some favourites remain and
we added in many new items. Sashimi is the most popular dish.
Tell us about your new menu, what inspires these dishes?
The new menu presents an extensive list of items. Carpaccio is inspired by
the interest to combine Italian flavours into Japanese cooking. Also, I wanted
to cater to the health conscious members which led to a variety of healthy food
like salads.
Do you find it a challenge to innovate constantly?
No. To me, innovation is necessary especially when everything seems to be picking
up like the digital world. I am always striving to keep my culinary knowledge
abreast in changing times. Often, I do research and when an idea pops up, I work
on it straightaway.
Besides the new menu which is a must try, what would be the
very one item member shouldn’t leave without trying? Why?
Fruit Salad. The essence is the Homemade sauce.
What is your philosophy towards cooking?
My philosophy is having the passion in cooking. In this way, one will continue to
strive. With the passion, the turnout of the food will be excellent because when
one is happy, one creates good energy which is positively spread. I make an
effort to entertain dining members, with food made from my soul.

Vitamin C– the anecdote in defying age
Today, due to technological advances in health and aging, we now
have a number of treatments, gadgets and concoctions to help slow
the aging process and improve our well being as well as beauty. Our
culture is very focused on youth and naturally we all want to look
and feel younger. Thankfully, with vitamin C, we now have the ability
to make dramatic improvements in our appearance without the
need for painful, expensive injections or plastic surgery. http://www.
antiagingfacial.org/
Vitamin C is well-known to be beneficial to the skin. Getting the right
level is essential if you’re going to age well yet look younger and feel
fantastic. High levels of vitamin C are vital for healthy connective
tissue, which make it so important in skin care. Put simply – it’s good
for your skin and helps prevent and reduce wrinkles. Getting the
right levels of vitamin C for your skin isn’t as easy as it should be – it’s
a water soluble vitamin which means it can’t be stored and needs toa water soluble vitamin which means it cant be stored and needs to

repairing damage to connective tissues. If you’re not getting enough
vitamin C you may be more susceptible to colds and minor ailments.
Some people find that small wounds take longer to heal – another
indication that you need more vitamin C.
If you smoke, your intake of vitamin C is likely to be severely depleted
and you will definitely need more vitamin C as a supplement. To save
the trouble, quit smoking. In addition, vitamin C helps you absorb
and use iron – so essential for female health. Vitamin C complements
vitamin E to boost the joint antioxidant effect. So a multivitamin
anti-aging supplement is often the best thing to go for.
In recent studies, vitamin C has been proven to be an antioxidant that
can help to shield the body from free radicals hence its importance
as an anti-aging vitamin. Anti-aging supplements typically contain
vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid Vitamin C is better absorbedvitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is better absorbed
in the presence of flavonoids. So choose a supplement with added
flavonoids or make sure you get them in your diet by eating lots
of highly colored fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits are usually
associated with vitamin C but actually strawberries have far more
vitamin C than oranges or any other citrus fruits. Blueberries score

berries – one of the new anti-aging super foods. To get maximum vitamin C – eat lots
of colorful vegetables like red peppers (bell peppers) which are really high in vitamin
C and the green leafies – spinach, cabbage, salad crops like watercress and rocket.
Many anti-aging experts recommend 500mg as a daily vitamin C intake and some
go much higher – up to 1000mg. Remember – you can’t take too much vitamin C – as
it is water soluble the body will simply eliminate the excess. If you’re worried about
upper limits, you may be interested to know that as recently, the National Academy
of Sciences set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level for vitamin C at 2,000 milligrams. So the
lesson for skin aging protection and overall healthy aging – up your intake of fresh
fruit and vegetables just like your mother probably told you.
But if you want optimum health and younger looking skin as you mature, add a high
level vitamin C supplement to your daily anti-aging regimen.

Clear away the day’s debris Wash your face before you sleep. Dirt, bacteria, and makeup left on overnight can
irritate skin, clog pores, and trigger breakouts. Remove this top layer of grime with a
gentle face wash (skin should feel pleasantly tight for 10 to 15 minutes post-cleansing),
which also allows anti-agents to penetrate deeper for better results. Because oil
production dips with hormonal changes in your 40s, cleansing twice daily can dry out
your complexion and make wrinkles look more pronounced. To refresh skin in the
morning, splash with lukewarm water.
Be UV – Obsessed as skin damage can happen at any time of yearNothing is more important than wearing sunscreen (ideally, SPF 30) every day if you
want younger-looking skin. Even 10 minutes of daily exposure to UVA “aging” rays
can cause changes that lead to wrinkles and sunspots in as few as 12 weeks. If your
moisturizer isn’t formulated with a built-in broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, be sure
to apply one daily to block both UVA and UVB rays.
Eat Omega – 3s as they make you smart, they make you beautiful, what’s to lose? These “good fats” in foods such as salmon, flaxseed, and almonds boost hydration,
which keeps skin supple and firm. Limit saturated fat intake in dairy products and
meats, which increase free-radical damage that makes skin more susceptible to aging.

A land whose rich cultural heritage
is not discovered only from within
the walls of numerous museums,
galleries and churches, many of
which today, as zero category
monuments, are included in a part
of the UNESCO World Heritage List,
but much more in that magical
place on the Mediterranean, where
even the shortest stroll becomes a
journey down a staircase thousands
of years old which takes one through
a history that is at the same time
turbulent, exciting and glorious.
Whether walking the intricate grid
of narrow white stone streets and
alleys, or revelling in the teeming
life of the port towns of Istria,
Kvarner or Dalmatia, or climbing

the green serpentines of Central
Croatia to the fairy-like fortresses
and castles, each step is an ever fresh
experience, made special by the fact
that on her territory as many as four
cultural circles meet, intertwine and
complement one another - west, east,
Central European and the southern
spirit of the Mediterranean. Croatia is
a land of urban culture which numbers
more cities than any other part of the
Mediterranean.
If you are interested in the days of
antiquity, you should start from the
Roman amphitheatre in Pula, through
Zadar and its forum - the largest
excavated forum on the eastern
shores of the Adriatic - and then to
the magnificent palace of Emperor
Diocletian in Split. Walk through time,
from the pre-Romanesque Church
of St. Domnius in Zadar dating from
the 9th century, to the world of the Romanesque that is the magical monument city
of Trogir, or the islands of Krk and Rab. Follow the Gothic period in Zagreb, Pazin, or, for
instance, the town of Ston on the Pelješac peninsula. Discover the Renaissance in Osor
on the island of Cres, Šibenik cathedral, the islands of Hvar and , and finally, the
one and only Dubrovnik. The towns of Varaždin, Bjelovar and Vukovar glow with the
splendour of the Baroque, while the heritage of the 19th century is at its best in Rijeka,
Osijek and, of course, in downtown Zagreb.
The incredible coastal landscape, lovely indented coastline, coves, beaches sheltered
by pine woods, and small and perfect coastal towns and villages scattered along the
mainland coast and on hundreds of islands and isles, captivate with their singular
character. Whether you are sailing along those shores, or diving in the blue waters
lapping against them, the world before you will include a wealth of flora and fauna,
traces of centuries gone by - from ancient amphorae to sunken galleys, and ships that
met their end in the whirlwind of two World Wars. You will discover that the Croatian
coast is a paradise for yachtsmen and divers. The preserved natural environment is just

as ideal for those who love walking, hiking, mountaineering and
camping. In short, it is the place for those who seek a holiday
where they can truly appreciate nature. And then, there is cycling,
riding, numerous trails and tours which will take you in different
directions in the rhythm that suits you. Finally, if you are an
adrenalin sort, rafting, parachuting or paragliding are activities
you are seeking for; the rapids and rivers from Central Croatia
to Dalmatia, and the mountains from the heights of Biokovo
mountain on the mainland to Vidova Gora in the island of
will provide you with unparalleled excitement and challenges.
Croatian marinas are situated in exceptionally well protected
locations, from larger towns to small coves on islands. In addition
to service and regular maintenance, marinas offer other services,
including restaurants and cellars where one can enjoy excellent
drinks and local and international cuisine and where all other
required services are provided. For those who prefer the charm of
little ports in the very heart of the small coastal towns, they have
at their disposal quaysides all along the Adriatic - from Cavtat,
and Gruž in Dubrovnik, Vela Luka on , Hvar and Vis, and
all the way to Lošinj and Istria.
When the urge for escape becomes irresistible, this is where
the sanctuary is. When you decide to gratify your body and soul,
Croatia is a place where the wellness destinations await which
have combined everything that a man can do and knows how to,
with the unique climes and ambiance, and the inexhaustible energy
of stone, sea and trees. Either as the aim on its own, or as an extra
which is a perfect complement to your holiday in Croatia, wellness
fortifies and provides that special kind of pleasure.
Croatia is also a great natural and historical stage for many unique
festivals, exhibitions, concerts and events such as the Dubrovnik
Summer Games, Split Summer, Rab Fjera, Pula and Motovun Film
Festivals, or the Špancirfest in Varaždin.
Being the most beautiful and most fragrant garden of Europe,
beautifully preserved nature, pleasant climate, a clean sea with more
than a hundred beaches on which blue flags fly (the international
ecological symbol of cleanliness of sea and beaches), with its rich
cultural and historical heritage and its delectable local cuisine with
unmistakeably Mediterranean flavors, Croatia is well on the way to
becoming, if not quite the best, then certainly the most attractive
destination in the Mediterranean.

Get the Safety HabitThe deepest law in human nature would be habit. People are often influenced
by habit. This saying does justify job safety and habit to be closely related. Thus,
human factors form a part in developing safe work habits. The Pines has set an
awareness programme, where it hopes to influence Pines Person to stick to good
habit and achieve positivism and the result will be beneficial to all co-workers.
Recognition of hazards is an important factor. To be vigilant and be constant
lookout for hazards, enhance their own safety. They were told that watching for
hazards is not only about considering the obvious ones but also hazards which
might suddenly appear through some action of another person or a chain of
unusual circumstances. Whenever a hazard is detected, they were told to report
it to someone who can make the change.
It is important every Pines Persons set a good example. “If you set a good example,
then others will follow” is a statement we always hear. Likewise, the actions of all
of us have an influence on the safety-mindedness of others.

Do You Know? The Pines Management and Staffs would like to take this opportunity to
thank Members for their generous contributions to the Staff Ang Pow Fund.
Hi William
Many thanks for your birthday greetings.
I wish to thank you and the Manager in the Pines Grill for preparing such
a lovely dinner for my birthday. My family and I enjoyed the all the dishes
immensely. We were very pleased to have selected the birthday dinner in the
Pines Grill. We made the right choice.
If the Pines had not sent me the suggested French, Cantonese and Japanese
menus a week in advance, we would not have known what our Club could
offer. This shows what a smart and thoughtful team you have in the Pines.
Thank you very much for taking the extra mile to make your members happy.
Dr Wilfred Chan (901038-0)

Dear Sirs,
There is almost only one reason that we will
continue to come by Deli. While food certainly
is of good standards and mix, Nick’s services and
personal response to details has impressed us,
everytime, all the time consistently when we
dropped by the Deli.
His relentless efforts in acknowledging each(most)
of the guests, as well as his attention to details in
maintaining a neat and orderly settings are second
to none.
We truly enjoy his outstanding, personable services
that always make us feel warm and welcomed. I just
want to share this due recognition that I had longed
wanted to commend.
Congratulations in grooming such an exceptional
employee.
Regards,
Mdm Yeow Lian Lian (200076-3A)
Dear Mr. Leong,
We had a very enjoyable Christmas Day dinner at
the Cafe Tivoli with the wide spread of food and the

Our guests were impressed with the team’s

group of 50 plus pax.
Please convey our heartfelt appreciation to your

went the extra mile.
Best Regards,
