3. Previous Event
Members met at Bedern Hall, York for our February meeting. We were grateful that Andrew Carter
agreed to be interviewed by Gordon Stewart. The interview began with covering the early influences
on Andrew when he attended Grammar School in Leicestershire and went on to cover his move to
Yorkshire when he took up a place to study Music at Leeds University. Subsequently we heard about
Andrew combining a career in school teaching in the York area with his position as a Songman at The
Minster. We then heard about how Andrew progressed his career as a composer and eventually was
able to stop teaching to devote all his time to composing. Finally the interview covered his success in
the USA. We heard quite a number of anecdotes both from Gordon. Highlights included Andrew
helping our at Wakefield Cathedral and encountering a teenage John Scott whom Andrew
encouraged to accompany the choir as Andrew conducted. Other anecdotes included Andrew
cycling home to hear that Phillip Ledger was on the telephone to obtain his date of birth as he had
selected one of his compositions to appear in the Kings College Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
The interview also included the playing recordings of some of Andrew’s compositions by way of
illustration. We were also grateful that Andrew brought with him a wide range of his published work
with some photographs which members enjoyed viewing both before and after the interview.

6. From the Secretary
Dear Friends
What a week of disruptions! With no pupils in and the school closed it has been very quiet at work. With no choir this evening I now have plenty of additional time to catch up with some organ practice. The Institute of British Organ Building is holding a day at Selby Abbey this Saturday and I have been looking forward to attending. With the threat of industrial action on some parts of the railway network (including the York to Selby line) this weekend and the swing bridge closed, I might have to pack my snow boots, take the car and drive the long way round. On a brighter note, I do have some interesting pieces in my music bag which just need learning, and I could always go to Selby on the bus and let Arriva deal with the diversions, the freezing cold weather along with the snow will help to keep down the population of aphids which cause so much grief to the rose bushes during the summer.... There is always some YDOA secretarial business to attend to: The annual return to the IAO which provides third party insurance cover along with the myriad of detail to attend to which ensures the annual dinner is an enjoyable and successful occasion. Speaking of the IAO, reminds me that I am struggling with the crossword in the latest edition of the Organist's Review. I can usually finish it (eventually) but this one is a real tough cookie. Now we are part-way through Lent, Easter will not be far off. What are you doing on Bank Holiday Monday? Many places have Organ concerts, some are even free admission. Have a look at the Organrecitals.com website and make it a pleasant day out. Enough of this - back for some more organ practice! Best wishes to you all Nigel

7. Dr Jackson at Sedgefield 1975.
Dr Jackson has given thousands of recitals, many of them on
recently restored or new instruments. Our member Dr David
Billett recalls one such occasion at Sedgefield Parish Church,
County Durham, on May 30th 1975.
David had left Cambridge to join ICI Billingham as a research
chemist, settling in Sedgefield in 1972. He was approached by
the church there and asked whether he would advise on the
restoration of the organ, or indeed lead this major project if
others took care of the finances. He agreed, despite his
demanding job, new home and young family.
‘Tommy’ Jackson, who had been Hill, Norman and Beard’s
northern representative, completely redesigned and
reconstructed the existing instrument, a 3 manual Nelson
(1913) of 34 stops, as a 2 manual of 30 stops. Less than half of
the old pipework was retained, with better second hand and
significant new pipework being specified. The work was
completed in December 1974, the first organ bearing Jackson’s
nameplate.
David had invited Francis Jackson to give the recital, met him for
his rehearsal, and was asked to turn the pages in the evening.
The recital of course demonstrated the organ’s capabilities
brilliantly, but David still recalls his alarm when Dr Jackson
played Mendelssohn’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor using a
small score.

9. Opportunity at Holy Trinity
Micklegate
The Priory Church of the Holy Trinity, Micklegate
The Priory Church of the Holy Trinity, Micklegate Advert for Organist
We are seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative self-employed
organist to assist with the provision of music at the parish church.
This includes playing at the 11am Sunday Sung Eucharist, on Feast
Days, for occasional offices and also other special services.
The church stands in the liberal catholic tradition with a growing
community. We are keen to extend the ways in which music
contributes to the mission and ministry of the church. The organist
will work collaboratively with the Assistant Priest and the Master of
Choristers. Holy Trinity Micklegate has recently appointed a Master
of the Choristers and eight choral scholars who sing on three
Sundays per month. There is an expectation that the organist will be
part of the life of the church and assist in growing the congregation.
There is also an expectation that the organist will be a
communicant.
Fees - the organist will be self-employed and the level of fees will be
negotiated.
For more information, please contact The Rev'd Eric Robinson [email protected] or 07964061810
Enhanced DBS checks may be required.
