1. Introduction
Greetings from the new nerve centre of ‘The
PipeLine’ editorial offices! Here at Bombarde
Towers we're having a few teething troubles
with our state of the art IT equipment, and my
first message comes to you via an iPad, linked to
an iPhone, via Auntie Ada's knitting machine!
As the new editor, I have a lot to live up to,
following on from Maximillian Elliott and
Stephanie Holdsworth, but I hope that I can
keep up the tradition of interesting articles and
photographs. My first edition is a little bit thin
due to the aforementioned IT problems - my
computer died - but I hope that normal service
will resume next month.
Please feel free to make comments, write
articles, send in photographs, and buy me a
drink in the pub. I hope you enjoy this edition!

PREVIOUS EVENT
Organ Recital by Matthew Atherton and AGM
On Saturday 22nd October members and friends gathered in Holy Trinity Church, Micklegate York to hear a recital
given by Matthew Atherton, Director of Music at Aysgarth School.
Matthew began his recital with an exhilarating performance of Widor’s ‘Allegro from Symphony 6’. This was
followed by a Daquin ‘Noel, sur les grande d’Anches, sans tremblant, et en duo’. Of the three pieces by J. S. Bach,
the chorale prelude ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme’ BWV 645 had an additional element in the melody which one
might describe as a ‘Matthew Atherton Christmas Special’. The programme also included a ‘Trumpet Minuet’ by A.
Hollins, W. Walton’s ‘Crown Imperial’, C. Camillieri’s ‘Wine of Peace’, a light-hearted piece by Michael Kidd entitled
‘Chaffinch’ and ended with the ever popular ‘Carillon de Westminster’ by L. Vierne. This was a superb recital,
technically brilliant and Matthew’s choice of registration showed off the colours of this fine instrument.
After the recital members made their way round to the Lower Hall of the URC in Priory Street for the A.G.M. Before
the meeting refreshments were served and members were once again able to sample Helen’s delicious cakes. The
meeting proceeded smoothly with approval given and points voted on where required.

NEXT EVENT
Evensong at York Minster and Organ Archive Recordings
The next YDOA event will be Evensong at 17:15 in York Minster on Wednesday 23rd November followed by an
evening of archive recordings presented by Robert Sharpe at 1 Minster Court.
Due to space constraints, the number of places for this event have been limited to twenty-five and allocated on a
‘first-come-first-served’ basis. For those members who have signed up and been allocated a space, the
arrangements for the evening are as follows: after Evensong members will meet near the Nave console and be
welcomed by Robert Sharpe. We will then proceed to 1 Minster Court, where refreshments will be served and a
collection of archive material displayed. Robert Sharpe will then give a talk about the Minster organ, accompanied
by a series of recordings. He will also talk about the house and its two organs which members will have an
opportunity to play.

YDOA Student Group
by Maximillian Elliott
The YDOA Student Group was founded in 1965 by Past President Bernard Porter in order to encourage and
support young organists. Sadly, the YDOA Student Group was disbanded many years ago due to dwindling
numbers. However, a recent revival of interest in York for organs and organ music has prompted Maximillian
Elliott to re-found the YDOA Student Group in 2016.
Currently comprising eight members, the YDOA Student Group is extremely keen to grow and we have received a
huge amount of support from the rest of the YDOA. Our first ‘official’ event was a social evening at a local York
public house on Friday 14th of October 2016. A group photograph from this evening can be seen above and it
highlights some of the youthful enthusiasm that we are keen to encourage.
On the 3rd of December, the YDOA Student Group is going on an organ crawl across the East Riding. We will be
visiting Nigel Perry’s house organ in Melbourne, the Roman Catholic Chapel in Everingham and John Scott
Whiteley’s house organ in Everingham. This promises to be a wonderful day and I hope that our eight members
will be able to strengthen the social bonds that were created at our inaugural event.
In order to showcase our talented young musicians, the committee has decided to host a Composite Recital by
members of the YDOA Student Group, which will take place at All Saints’ Church, North Street, York on the 30th of
September 2017. In the meantime, the YDOA Student Group will host events of all varieties and we hope that the
love of organs and organ music will continue to grow among young musicians. If you know any students who play
the organ, or are keen to learn, please ask them to consider joining the YDOA. Any eligible YDOA members will
then automatically be enrolled into the YDOA Student Group.

St George’s Hall, Liverpool
by Peter Godden and Pat Wolsey
St George’s Hall contains one of the world’s finest concert organs; some would still say the finest. Built by Father
Henry Willis in 1855, and restored to its 1931 state after damage during World War II, it has survived the
attempted demolition of hall and organ by the Liverpool militants in the 1980s and is a part of the city’s heritage.
Following on our intrepid trip across the Pennines earlier in the year, members may be interested to know that
regular recitals are given by Ian Tracey, City organist, and details are on the above poster. Admission is
astonishingly cheap for what you receive. Liverpool is served by two good trains (good trains, not goods trains) an
hour from York, and St George’s Hall is just across the road from Lime Street Station when you get there. There is
of course a very good café in the hall, and a huge variety of other eating/drinking houses in that part of the city.
As you will see, they are expanding in 2017 from simply Tuesday lunchtime recitals to Sunday afternoon ones as
well, very much in the WT Best tradition to which Liverpool proudly clings.
