From the Principal

I would like to start by sending condolences from the Werrimull P-12 School to Bill and Flo Symes and Janice, Marika and Nerrilee Woodberry and their families in this saddest of times.

This is the last Pipeline for the Term as there is only a week and half left, it has been a busy but rewarding Term with students being successful outside of school in ventures and also within our school community. Last Friday the grade 4 – year 10 students participated in the WOW program which I have previously mentioned and it was a motivating day which saw our students get out of their comfort zones and work on their self-esteem and confidence. The presenters were passionate and engaging which our students thrived on and gave it their all.

Thank you to all parents that participated in the Parent Opinion Survey Online we have not received the results as yet but will communicate these to the community once we receive them from the Department.

Yesterday we had three students – Gus Rowe, Ebony Petty and Ella Hards travel into Mildura and participate in the Mini Olympics, these students had to meet a minimum requirement set by School Sport Victoria to be able to go to the next level. They had a great day and came home with many ribbons – Gus won his long jump and 2nd in the 100m, Ella won the 1500m and Ebony placed 3rd in the 1500m. Well done to the three of them.

This Friday our students that are attending the Leadership school will present their Community Learning Project. This is where they talk to a group of teacher and principal delegates and explain what they need to see in their community in the short term to bring people together. We are looking forward to seeing and hearing their ideas and working with them when they return to see it come to fruition. Also this Friday the P-6 are attending an excursion with Nangiloc and Koorlong to continue to build relationships and to learn about local history.

Next week RED FOOD DAY has been changed to Wednesday 19th as we have a FOOTY COL-OURS day on FRIDAY and the students have the opportunity to eat “footy food”. An order form was sent home on Monday but if you haven’t yet seen it please contact the office and we will send another one home. Our 4 – 6’s with Mr Harris and Mrs Carter are attending and participating in an Aspire Leadership challenge and our VCE Further Maths students are travelling to Euston for exam revision. So as you can see even though the Term is wind-ing up it is go, go, go until the final bell.

The last day of Term students will have their timetabled classes from 9am – 11am and from 11am – 12:30pm footy activities will be running for the P-10s. Lunch will be early due to the finish time of 1:30pm.

The weather has changed and therefore hats are a requirement for all outdoor activities – recess, lunch, PE and extracurricular. If your son/daughter doesn’t have a hat please con-tact the office to arrange a new one.

Next week we are offering parents to pick up their reports in the following time slots Tuesday 3:10pm – 4:15pm, Wednesday 3:10pm – 4:15pm and Thursday 3:10pm – 4:15pm at a parent teacher student interview, all other reports will be sent home on Fri-day with the students. If you would like a parent teacher student interview and to collect your report early please email the teacher to set-up a time. The appointments will be 10 minutes in length if you require more time than this you will need to make a further ap-pointment for Term 4, you can collect the report from the office 10 minutes before the scheduled interview time.

Finally I wish everyone luck if you are or your team is still involved in finals and implore you to stay safe over the break.

TAKING THE CLASSROOM OUTSIDE

Werrimull P-12 College students have been getting a real understanding of the benefits water delivered to the Wallpolla floodplain, thanks to the Mallee CMA’s Wetland Learning program.

Students left the classroom to get their hands dirty at Wallpolla, learning about how wetlands work and the role of water delivered to floodplains in supporting the health of our unique native plants and wildlife

Students heard from Aboriginal Project Officer Corey Payne about the cultural history of the floodplains. Corey showed the students a very ancient ‘boundary tree’ at the wetland and ended his talk by playing his didgeridoo.

A floodplain monitoring activity was delivered by ecologist Sarah Holmes from EnviroEdu, who explained how environmental water improves the floodplain forest at Wallpolla. The students undertook their own monitoring on the ‘health’ of part of the floodplain, looking at the vegetation layers and searching for signs of weeds and pest activity. Their findings indicate the floodplain is in good health.

Students worked with Mallee CMA Project Officer Susan Saris using nets to take water samples, looking for aquatic macroinvertebrates and learnt how bugs fit into food webs. Among the bugs found in the water samples were water boatmen, snails and biting midge larvae. Our students were told that this was a good result as it indicates the lakes are full of food for the frogs, birds and fish.

The day was ended with a relaxing bushwalk, a highlight of which was the brown snake spotted by the boys. While interesting to see, everybody took a wide berth of the snake and left it alone.

This project is supported by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA), through funding from the Victorian Government.

Millewa Pre-School

What’s Happening

We’re heading into the final week of Term next week and as usual we will be finishing our Term with a family day together. This Term is Footy Colours Day so please dress up in your football gear, whether it be AFL, NRL, NFL or your local team and come along for some outdoor fun and traditional footy food. We welcome all family members so bring along whoever you would like as well as a plate of food to share with the group, we’ll provide the footy food. Yesterday we enjoyed the sunshine and warmth while it lasted and spent the day outside before the wind picked up and made outside an unpleasant place to be. Our kindergarten group have been doing a fantastic job of taking part in collaborative play ranging from building

sandcastles in the sandpit to climbing on the playground or pruning the out of control geranium that can handle the most enthusiastic gardeners in the world.
