next year will hold. It is timeto plan the great Golf event,to plan the next technicalprograms, to plan the nextClass.
We have our challengesahead of us.
Planning the Golf hasbeen a challenge. Clark ismanaging beautifully. Sincemuch of the feedback frommembers was concern inthe economic times, the JereDumas Memorial / AL ASPEGolf tournament will evolveinto a product show andGolf Tournament. The Chal-lenge being to have every-one enjoy themselves at theGolf event and offer a prod-uct table top show. I thinkwe have managed it. Every-body read the Golf insertsfor more information.

ASPE Alabama Chapteris moving forward. It is timewe all maximize the poten-tial benefit of the AlabamaChapter. Lets encourageeach other, bring in newmembers, and bring in ideasto challenge us. By increas-ing our education, network-ing and code involvementASPE’s growth is inevitable.
Before I end this mes-sage, I extend my prayersand my sympathies to allwho have troubles in thesetimes.
I regret to inform every-one that Norman Parks hasfought the fight with cancerand is now is in a betterplace. There is great sad-ness with these words of thenews about Norman.Norman as many of us knowwas dedicated to his family, his maker and ASPE . Hisdedication was shared byhis family’s and their love forhim.
We should find peacethat he is no longer suffer-ing. He prepared for a life-time in Eternity. My prayersare with his family andfriends.

Center has undergone a retro-fit plumbing project targetingwater conservation. Built in theearly 1970’s the building wasin need of a “face lift”.
In past years, the facility hashosted the SEC basketballchampionship, numerousNCAA regional tournaments, the state of Alabama HighSchool basketball champion-ships, and most recently a DavisCup first round match. It wasevident that in order to continuehosting these events renova-tions to the BJCC had to bemade!
That said, first classrestroom facilities are an impor-tant criteria when facilities bidto host these marquis events.
The BJCC changed out (75)one-gallon urinal fixtures to theZurn Pint system, which usesone pint of water per flush. Thisrepresents up to an 88% watersavings per fixture at the CivicCenter. In addition, a total of(125) three-gallon water clos-ets were replaced with the ZurnEcoVantage 1.28 gallon perflush fixtures. And we didn’t stopthere; all of the lavatories wereupgraded with Zurn’s low-flow,hyrdo-gen senor faucets, whichwhen used, the unit rechargesthe batteries automatically. Thissaves the BJCC both water andenergy!
Paired Performance: Thesecret to the remarkable per-formance of these low waterconserving fixtures is Zurn’s en-gineered match of the plumb-ing fixture and the valve thatflushes it. “When Congressrequired that water closets flushonly using 1.6 gallons insteadof 3, there was little time for theindustry to develop productsthat functioned properly” statesBill Cone with VCM Sales. “The

1.28 fixtures and pint urinalsthat Zurn has developed matchboth the fixture and the valvetogether providing what Zurncalls “paired performance”.Zurn is way out front in the de-velopment of water conserva-tion products that are sweep-ing our nation. This benefits theuser because the Zurn fixtureswork the first time you flush!”says Cone.
“We have had two majorevents since installing the Zurnwater conserving fixtures in ourfacility” says Henry Latham, di-rector of plumbing maintenanceat the BJCC. “Everyone ispleased with their performance
and the water savings we haveexperienced has been signifi-cant.”
Always Moving ForwardZurn leads the way into a
greener plumbing environmentand is currently in productionon the most cutting edge prod-ucts of urinals, water closets, flush valves, and faucets. Zurncurrently offers 10 differentmodels of the “The Pint®” uri-nal to accommodate variousretrofit applications. They alsohave all types of water closetsthat flush on 1.28 gallons of wa-ter. This provides a vast oppor-tunity for building owner’s likethe BJCC to conserve water
and significantly reduce annualoperating costs.

March’s article was based on providing in-formation regarding the ICC 2009 InternationalResidential Code Update, in reference to requir-ing all new construction of residential one andtwo family homes to be equipped with home firesprinklers.
This was a great achievement, with ASPE’sbacking to help push this code change into re-ality and start saving more lives and reducingproperty damage.
This new code change has not gone unno-ticed by its opponents that are now pushing forAnti-Sprinkler legislation in a nationwide effort.Antisprinkler forces are seeking lawmakers to

prohibit local communities from selecting modelsafety code provisions regarding sprinklers.(taken from
NFPA article) This would prevent any com-munity from implementing any new sprinklermandates in new construction of one and twofamily homes.
There are currently fourteen (14) states thathave legislative bills in process to be voted on toprevent this safety code change from becomingan active role in saving lives. In the state of Ala-bama, Bill HB633 is currently being consideredin both the Alabama House of Representativesand the Alabama State Senate.
For more up to date information, please gothe Fire Sprinkler Initiative web site atwww.firesprinklerinitiative.org.
What can you do to prevent this change fromoccurring? Contact your state legislator as soonas possible and express your opposition to theselimitations being considered.

GUEST EDITORIALby F. Pace Josey, CPD
“Enjoying Alabama ASPE”The Alabama ASPE
chapter is a very importantpar t of my l i fe ; i t hasopened more doors of op-por tuni ty for personalachievement and enabledme to reach higher in theplumbing engineering de-sign field. I have workedthe last twenty six years forthe Jay R. Smith Manufac-turing Company, that pro-
vides quality engineeredproducts for the Plumbingand Drainage Industry attheir home office located inMontgomery Alabama. How was I introduced tothe ASPE world of plumb-ing engineering and thetechnical functions of de-sign codes and standardsthat affect every structurein some manner? My bosswho is currently the VicePresident of Engineeringfor the Jay R. Smith Manu-facturing Company, JerryMcDanal has been the pastpresident of the AtlantaASPE chapter and also
served as the AlabamaASPE chapter president, opened the doors of theASPE world to me when hehired me to work in theproduct engineer depart-ment. At that time Alabamadid not have an ASPEchapter, so a group of JayR. Smith employees alsoASPE members wouldmake the trip to the AtlantaASPE meet ing once amonth. We enjoyed the ex-perience of the ASPE or-ganization and the warmwelcome from the Atlantachapter members, who ac-tually helped start a satel-
lite Alabama ASPE chapterin Birmingham, Alabama. The support from ASPEwas very positive and theAtlanta ASPE chapter offic-ers all made extra effortson the behalf of the newlyforming Alabama ASPEchapter.
Many days of planningand many days of recruit-ing prospect ive ASPEmembers were followed byrewards as the AlabamaASPE chapter was officiallychartered on March, 1995.Jay R. Smith is a tremen-dous suppor ter of theASPE organization by par-ticipating in the very firstASPE product show in1968, to having more than25 employees that are ac-tive ASPE members, mostlyAlabama Chapter membersthat have served in manydifferent capacities in theASPE organization.
ASPE has also enabledme to achieve one ofASPE’s highest goals; thetile of CPD certified Plumb-ing Designer, through at-tending technical designseminars and experiencingmany hours of technicalspeakers that providedpresentations at each Ala-bama chapter meeting. The most enjoyable part ofbeing an Alabama ASPEmember is meet ing somany nice people that allhave the same goals ofmaking the plumbing engi-neering world the best thatit can possibly be thru con-tinued learning experien-ces.
