Dear Hamworthy Residents, Can you believe it is this time of year already? I must start to get myself into the Christmas swing of things. This year we are going to Oxford to Stephen’s parents so we are creating two Christmases, one in Oxford and another on my Birthday, 22nd December, to celebrate with my parents. It’s a good excuse to let our hair down! Nellie took us to Wimborne Market last month and we became traders for the day. You can read all about that on pages 28 and 29. The Poole Directory, Hamworthy edition, is here to bring you news articles, puzzles and competitions. There are also our very loyal advertisers who would love to hear from you. Please grab a cuppa, have a read and do mention The Poole Directory when making any calls and bookings. This makes a huge difference and makes all our work worth while. We have chimney sweeps, health and fitness experts, garden services, social clubs, fire and security advisors, residential care homes, blinds, dentists, dancewear, builders, cameras wanted, unique stained glass windows, garage doors, oven cleaners, loft services, hearing aids, carpet and upholstery cleaners, beds... and much more! The index at the back tells you all you can find inside. The prize wordsearch last month was won by Becky Blake. Well done to you! Do fill this in and send it off to us, as you could be the lucky winner of a High Tea for two at the NEW Quayside Emporium! If you know of any clubs or societies needing help in advertising, or have a local story to tell, please let us know as we provide this service for FREE! If you have a business and would like to promote, we would love to help you too. Please give one of us a call.Wishing all residents of Hamworthy a Very Merry Christmas and we will be in touch again in the New Year! All the Best,

Debbie & Stephen Corney

Hello, I’m Stacey, Proprietor of Stacey’s Barbers in Upton. I have grown up and lived in Corfe Mullen all my life. I attended the local schools, Rushcombe, Lockyers and Corfe Hills.

I left school in 1989 and went straight out to work at a local salon in Corfe Mullen called Nu Wave. I decided to go in to barbering, a family friend who worked in a barber shop in Wimborne, Close Shave, trained me in the art of barbering.

I then worked in Broadstone at A Cut Above barbers for a short time, then at Topman in Ashley

My last job working for someone else was at Mojo’s in Broadstone, where I worked for 9 years, before I decided to take the plunge and open Stacey’s Barbers in Upton, my ambition for a long time. I lived in Upton for 5 years so I knew it needed a barber’s; it was just a case of waiting for premises to become available.

are also from Upton and work locally.

I am very hopeful that we will soon be able to take on another member of staff and have all three chairs working every day. We pride ourselves on excellent cutting skills, competitive pricing and a happy and friendly salon.

We are situated on the Blandford Road in Upton and have the added bonus of parking right outside

Glamour, Mystery and Fund-raising for Poole HospitalIntrigue, Mystery and Merriment hits Poole Quay this December as Poole Hospital Charity hosts a more glamourous twist on the traditional style Christmas Party.

Hopefully not every Christmas Party starts with the demise of a guest but it will be up to the partygoers to guess ‘whodunnit’ as the drama unfolds around them. Five of the guests will be chosen to get embroiled in the action by playacting a character from the script, becoming potential murder suspects and victims themselves!

The evening is a charity event to raise money for Poole Hospital, so guests will not only be treated to a 2 course dinner but also a 1920’s themed murder mystery evening with charity auction and fundraising games. Proceeds raised will go to provide additional services, equipment and environmental enhancements to Poole Hospital for the benefi t of patients.

The Custom House, Poole Quay will be transported back to a Gatsby era whilst guests will be entertained and involved in more fun than the usual Christmas Party. Event Manager Jayne Hughes told us “We are really excited to be running our murder mystery again, last year’s evening was hugely successful raising a fantastic £5000 for Poole Hospital, a fi gure we would love to match again this year whilst providing laughs, shocks, twists and turns throughout a very entertaining evening of events.”

Tickets for the 3rd of December are already being snapped up, the ‘Gatsby Christmas Party’ theme is particularly popular. Tickets for the event cost £35 for a 2 course meal or £40 for 3 courses, both including drink on arrival, or a full table of 10 package can be booked for £300 – call 01202 448449 to book or email [email protected].

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Mike Bath feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Poole and the surrounding

that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that

it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just

goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mike a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

your local, Hamworthy estate agent have been selling and letting homes here for over 12 years.

With an o ce located on the busy, main Blandford Road (168, opposite the Old First School development) we are ideally placed to market and manage your property, whatever your requirements.Combine our location with extensive property exposure via local media, ‘Rightmove’, ‘Zoopla’ etc, we o er an unrivalled service with, we would like to think, a professional, personal and friendly touch. Our team (Simon, Jenny, Steve, Suzanne or Angela) are experiencing a busy 2015 and urgently need properties for a waiting list of both buyers and tenants.

Autumn is the season of change. e leaves turn from green to brown, the evenings start drawing in and the ‘C’ word is increasingly mentioned (although I start my Christmas countdown from June!).Autumn is also a good time to start looking to move home. Traditionally early autumn is a busy period for people looking to move. e main holiday season is over, children have returned to school and there is still enough time to complete a sale prior to Christmas.

is year is no diff erent. In fact, with all the talk of interest rate changes to come, now is a good time to sell and/or buy to secure a good mortgage rate.Because of the misconceptions about selling during winter, many sellers don’t think it’s worth their time to try and sell their homes toward the end of the year, so they keep their homes off the market. Serious buyers have fewer homes to choose from, so less competition for homes on the market — and more buyers checking them out.For these highly motivated buyers, the traditional barriers to winter house-hunting bad weather, short days and holiday preparations don’t apply. If your house is available to view, they are more likely to make an off er.Turners Estate Agents would like to assist you in selling your current home and/or fi nding you your next property. Call us now for a free, no obligation market appraisal on 01202 681682.Oh and by the way - Merry Christmas!

Still, shimmering waters, the flash of a kingfi sher, the ‘peep’ of a wading bird, the bright dazzle of a dragonfl y and even the glimpse of a lizard scutt ling away. Just a few of the sights and sounds of Lytchett Bay, a quiet haven for wildlife and people in a sheltered north-western corner of Poole Harbour. The Great Heath purchase of the eastern half of Lytchett Bay, including an area of shoreline, woods and heath, has created the new Lytchett Bay Nature Reserve, owned by Dorset Wildlife Trust and managed in partnership with Amphibian and Repti le Conservati on. The reserve is one of the few places where we can sti ll experience the natural change from heathland to marshland habitats which could once be found all round Poole Harbour. The heathland habitat here supports rare reptiles as well as rare breeding birds. The Bay is a key site for wading birds and wildfowl, which feed on the rich invertebrate life of the sheltered mudfl ats. Wildlife to look out for at Lytchett Bay nature reserve includes ospreys in spring and autumn, marsh harriers in winter and warblers, dragonfl ies and repti les in summer. The heath is a small but precious

remnant, providing a home for rare birds such as the Dartf ord warbler and nightjar and Britain’s rarest lizard, the sand lizard. You can fi nd out more about the birds at birdsofpooleharbour.co.uk or why not join one of The Great Heath’s guided events to discover the wildlife of this special place? The reserve is now part of the Lytchett Bay Nature Park, a place for wildlife and for people to enjoy nature and bringing together landowners all around the Lytchett Bay shore. For more informati on about Lytchett Bay Nature Reserve and events in The Great Heath, visit the greatheath.org or talk to Dorset Wildlife Trust on 01202 692033. Local Maritime Volunteer ServiceMaritime Volunteer Service (MVS) has a unit based in Poole, serving the needs of Poole Harbour and the local waterfront.

if your a boat owner or just out for a stroll along Poole Quay you would have seen a MVS vessel, our vessels range from two launches moored on Poole Quay, a RIB, two Jet Skis and MaViS our dory.

Our aim is to get you afl oat irrespective of your maritime skills, the MVS offer practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communication skills so that they may then use these skills to benefi t others through events and activities organised by the local unit.

Alongside our training we have a busy time, we work alongside Poole Harbour Commission out patrolling the harbour, the jet ski area or up between the bridges in our RIB, this is done from Easter until September every weekend and Bank Holidays.

We also act as safety vessels for the round the Island swim and we assist with Poole Harbour Watch. At the annual Bournemouth Air Festival we take all of our fl eet out over the four days to maintain the exclusion zone. We are ready to respond to any emergency such as an oil spill within the Harbour or we maybe tasked by the local coastguard to help out, it means we are a very diverse unit, none more so than when it comes to fundraising for our fl eet.

We are a self funding charity and rely heavily on sponsors or individuals, you will often see the MVS fundraising at Table Top sales, fetes, the local dog track and boat shows. Of course this has a two fold effect, not only raising money, but it shows us off to the public raising our profi le. The MVS is always keen to fi nd new ways to use resources to support and assisting the people who live and work around the Poole area, so would welcome an approach from local groups organisations or individuals.

If you are not from this area it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the MVS, the organisation is nationwide with 35 units based around the coast and estuaries of the UK, Each unit has it own agenda, it might mean they work alongside Port authorities, the RNLI or the coastguard, the size of units vary in membership around the country and many operate different types of vessels, one unit even having a hovercraft.

Anyone aged 16 or above can join providing the volunteer is in good health, there is currently no upper age limit on membership, if you have no Maritime knowledge don’t be put off, you might have a boat of your own but you may wish to brush up on some maritime skills, the Poole unit is an accredited RYA ashore school and offers all the usual RYA ashore based courses.

Go online to www.mvspoole.org.uk for details of the Poole unit or if you prefer you can call the Head Of Unit Trevor Ashworth on 07871 554226. You can also visit the website for details of other units based around the British coastline.

Don Tibbs

It’s that time of year again...No, not Christmas, it’s far less fun and could cost you a lot more than Christmas does! It’s time to think about getting your personal tax return prepared and submitted to HMRC as any delays could cost you between £100 and £1600!

If you are required to complete a personal tax return then the deadline for submitting this to HMRC is 31st January 2016.

Myself, Don Tibbs, qualified as an accountant in the early 80s and have worked for a number of well-known companies in the area before setting up Tibbs Accounting Services in January 2011. In September 2014, I moved into premises at The Triangle in Upton and have been joined by my daughter Lauretta. Since moving to the new offi ces we have seen our business nearly double with a great many recommendations and passing trade.

As well as dealing with sole traders, we also have a large number of limited company clients and we are able to deal with any businesses up to a turnover of £5 million.

If you think we can assist you with any of the above, then please don’t hesitate to contact us via the details in our advert below. If we are not available when you call there is a call divert on the phone so please do leave us a message and we will contact you as early as possible.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you all have a great Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

Nel

The Adventures of NellieThe Dorset Directories Camper VanNellie took us to Wimborne Market! Not very adventurous I hear you say... Well, when you have a bedroom full of boys’ toys, books, DVDs, teddy bears, electronics etc etc etc, Wimborne Market can become very exciting for an eleven year old, and Nellie was not going to disappoint him. Hayden has wanted to “sell” his old belongings for quite some time. Being a bit cautious and one of those Mums that say, “Oh you can’t sell that – Grandma bought you it!”I thought it was time to let Hayden do what he wanted with his belongings, after all, they are his, not mine. So, I would help him try and sell some of them, then he could buy a game for his computer that he so wanted... and same ME some money! In fact it turned out to be me that paid for the stall. Stephen had said he would, but suddenly when it was time to pay on the day, Stephen didn’t have any cash with him. Has that ever happened to you?

I’ve never really been to Wimborne Market before. It was all a bit nerve racking. Would we sell anything? Stephen had booked a stall inside, just in case it rained but we could easily have been outside as it was a beautiful day and Nellie could really

have been part of the day at the car boot section. She would have loved that! Still, we took the boxes and set up our ‘delightful’ stand. It was pretty basic actually with no table cloth or anything but “stuff” and a few home made labels stating 50p, £1 and £2, carefully placed on the right items that Hayden had worked out. So, we were ready! Being in the marketing kind of trade I told Hayden that our target market would be Grandparents who wanted toys at their house ready for the grandchildren when they visited. I couldn’t have been more right! Of course that is always the case... Having been all nervous with an ‘out of place’ sort of feeling, we soon got into the swing of things. The fi rst item to go was an Action Man sat on a motor bike. When the lady snapped our hand off and couldn’t get the money out quick enough to pay Hayden his £2, I knew we had under charged! Later when I looked on the internet (something we should have done BEFORE going to the market) we saw a very similar Action Man and bike for £60! This one was in good condition too. You know you can get some real bargains at Wimborne Market - I know that now!

We met some wonderful people. One man of over 80 told us his life story and I am hoping we cheered him up and he did have a good time at his son’s house in London the following day. Another lady found a book of the Gruffalo and very happily bought it for her 32 year old son who loves the story! She did ask if we had any others and at the time we couldn’t see any. Half an hour later Stephen found another Gruffalo book at the bottom of the box. Hayden and I set off to see if we could fi nd her again. Now for those who don’t know, Wimborne Market is big! There’s everything there from bric-a-brac and antiques, to pet food, scented candles, furniture, records, jewellery, clothes, carpets, plants, fruit and veg… absolutely everything. I didn’t think we had a chance of fi nding her, but suddenly Hayden shouted, “There she is Mummy!” It was only at this point I realised we were doing something not very British. After all, you don’t chase people in the street to sell them something do you? Not even if it is only 50p! But, when it comes to your children you fi nd yourself doing things, that otherwise you wouldn’t dream of. We did say “Hello” again to the lady who looked a bit shocked, but did buy the 50p book. Do you think we could we be ‘done’ for harassment? Anyway Hayden was 50p better off...and a book lighter.I do hope the 32 year old son appreciates the books!

Something else that was funny, or should I say embarrassing. I ordered a sausage sandwich and was given a number to present when it was ready. Number 98.I waited, went back and the lady shouted out “86!”, with a sausage sandwich clutched in her hand. I stood there patiently looking at her and all the people around. “86!” she shouted loudly again, looking impatient.I smiled. Noone came. I then suggested, as I had 98, that I could take that one, and then when my number came up, they could have that sausage sandwich. “98?!” the woman cooking at the back quizzed .... “That’s 86, Love!” she declared. I smiled again, took the sandwich and walked away with my head held in the air trying to not look too humiliated. I won’t make that mistake again! Classic. The morning was actually a great success. Hayden gained £27 and we were two empty boxes better off. Result. DVDs, toys and books all gone to good homes where they can be enjoyed. We definitely want to go again. This time we will do a bit more research fi rst, but to be honest, it was a great morning and the real purpose was to move “stuff” out of the house and give Hayden a bit of money to get his new games with. I was more than happy and Nellie left with a big smile on her bonnet.Where will Nellie go next…?

Change lives for just £1 per week!Joining the Julia’s House lottery for £1 a week is a simple way of supporting your children’s hospice charity in Dorset…and there is a £1,000 jackpot to win every week!

Having a regular income from its lottery means that Julia’s House can offer frequent respite and support to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families whenever they need it. Lyndsay Smith, a lottery co-ordinator at Julia’s House, said: “Joining our lottery is one of the simplest, most sustainable ways that you can support Julia’s House. Local performing arts school to perform at the West EndLocal performing arts school, Shining Bright Like A Star (SBLAS) have been invited to perform at the West End in February, at Her Majesty’s Theatre London, home of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, Phantom of the Opera.

Since opening it’s doors in 2013 SBLAS have excelled in all aspects of singing, acting and dancing, with students from 2 years up to adults. Their unique school, offers the very best in qualifi ed teaching in RAD Ballet, BTDA Jazz and Tap, as well as LAMDA acting and Trinity Singing examinations. Their exams this year have seen amazing 100% pass marks, and to top the year off with this fantastic invitation to perform at the West End.

“We are so honored and proud, to have received an invite to perform at the prestigious West End theater in February. We could not believe that after two years of opening our doors that we received the email,” says manager Candice Harmon.

SBLAS will be taking their students to perform 30 minutes of their own script and choreography. Students will be seen singing, acting and dancing an array of different routines circled around a magical mysterious story line, which is being kept very hush hush.

“This year has been fantastic for us. We have been asked to perform at all the top local events, for example, Wimborne Folk Festival, and the turning on of the Westbourne Christmas lights alongside Mungo Jerry, as well as moving to our own studio in Ashley Cross Poole.

Alongside this we also gave a massive

welcome to our newest patron, star of the West End musical Les Miserable, Amanda Chennel who played Eponine. Amanda was very eager to join us at SBLAS after seeing the amazing teachings and potential in the students. We are very lucky to have Amanda with us. It has been a great year, and look forward to welcoming new students through our doors each week,” says principal Maria Marra.

SBLAS are a family that unite by performing arts. Their students are nurtured, cared for, leave with smiles on their faces, and given countless opportunities to perform and do something they really enjoy doing. The relaxed, low costing professionalism of SBLAS is what makes it the fastest growing performing arts school in the area. They are Unique!

My Success Story“I am 59 years old and went through a very painful divorce in 2002. Since then I have had a number of di cult work situations. I have been quite stressed and always seem to be getting into disputes with people. Any relationships that I had did not work out. Physically I put on a lot of weight and I felt quite unhappy and down. My back started to hurt more and more and prevented me from exercising. I had frequent incapacitating migraines and I drank too much.

“Over the last 15+ years, I have done a load of courses I have read many many books, I even tried to learn more about being a medium etc. I was looking for answers as to what life was about and how I had created what I was facing. I knew at some level that I was responsible for what was happening to me, I knew that only I could sort my life out, I just did not know how to do it or even where to start.

“I literally stumbled across Scientology® without knowing that it was Scientology. I responded to an advert which was on a page with lots of other self tests, as I felt that I could be a bit depressed and wanted to see if it was true. I did the test, had a chat with Mel and started the DIANETICS® course. The book was really interesting. It resonated in so many ways. The technical explanations and the information that was given in the book made a lot of sense to me so I ploughed through the book, quite motivated to nish it.

“I wanted to do more so I went to do ‘auditing’ and several Life Improvement courses.

“I now have no more migraines, literally, I have not had even a headache since nishing the auditing. My back is doing really well and I have no real pain now. I feel less stressed and emotional all of the time and I don’t get upset with little things. I am not as reactive as I was. I am quite calm now. I am sleeping quite well now (7 hours a night is normal now - I used to get 4 or 5 max a night before). I also had a lot of food allergies, which are not totally cured but in the main they are much better. My are ups are much less frequent than they were and not as extreme. I have noticed quite a di erence since doing the ‘Survival Rundown’. As I go through this course I am noticing that I am much more present and spend less time in the past. Old stu does not get in the way so much. I see things much clearly now (literally) and I feel that time actually seems to go slower - or I get a lot more done - don’t know which one it is and I don’t care - its great. Please read the DIANETICS book and see for yourself how it could help you.” - BR

Circular Economy Study Group - PooleStudying together – through participative Peer to Peer learning – Ken Webster’s new book:‘The Circular Economy; A Wealth of Flows’

Ken is Head of Innovation at theEllen MacArthur Foundation

‘The Circular Economy – A wealth of Flows’ elaborates on the fundamental ideas that structure the Circular Economy and helps defi ne the concept of a regenerative model – able to decouple growth from the consumption of the earth’s fi nite resources:”Ken’s understanding of framing and his ability to consistently refer to the ‘big picture’ provides a comprehensive narrative. The Circular Economy gives us the opportunity to build a system that can run in the long term.”

Ellen MacArthur

Adapting in response to feedback is key to systems thinking. Through evolving our consciousness this decade can become in Ken’s words, “the gateway to a Circular Economy”.The key to complexity is systems thinking

The key to systems thinking is patternsThe key to patterns is to form them

into a languageThe Group will draw from Ken’s work that shows the big picture/macrocosm, co-creating relationships in how to “accelerate the transition to a Circular Economy” through Systems Thinking – Nature as Model, Mentor and Measure. Ken Webster, author, will join us in our fi nal session. We will connect the patterns already living in us in more depth to the Circular Economy and create our own unique relationship. Let’s form the language.

WHEN?The series begins on 28th November from 2 – 5pm, and will continue for 6 monthly sessions.Reserve your place here:circular-economy-study-group.eventbrite.com

WHERE?The Project Climbing Centre,The Dolphin Centre, Poole,Dorset, BH15 1UD

WHO?This study group is for those of us who are part of this paradigm shift, or wish to be.Taking as our starting point “Why a Circular Economy WILL work” – we will connect the big picture to our own already existing, individual and unique patterns and relationships.Welcome to all businesses; educators; inspired lay people and anyone who wishes to be part of the paradigm shift from a linear economy (take–use–waste), through sustainability (doing less harm), to a circular economy - decoupling of growth from fi nite resources. Where waste = food (cradle to cradle).

Building commemorated with Blue PlaqueAt a ceremony in Poole High Street in front of the Alcatraz Restaurant, The President of Poole Maritime Trust, Captain Michael Fulford-Dobson, CVO, OBE, KStJ, JP, DL, RN, unveiled a Blue Plaque to commemorate the Royal Navy’s occupation of the building during World War II. The Navy used the building as Head Quarters for the Command of Poole Harbour and its approaches from 1940-1945. Captain Fulford-Dobson gave a brief history of the war-time building and was delighted that the Blue Plaque would remind people that Poole was in the fore front of the War to defend England. He thanked the Lees family, as current owners of the building for their permission to erect the Blue Plaque. The research into the wartime use of

the building was carried out by Robin Moy and other members of the Trust. In attendance was Ann Stribley, the Mayor of Poole and a large crowd of members of the Trust and other well wishers.
