I am a creative 20 year old, studying Fashion Communication (communication design) at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in H.S.R Layout, Bangalore.

When I am not glued to my computer screen, working on my academics, you can find me making rough sketches of something unseen paranormal. I also enjoy finding and interacting with other artists, learning and discussing new ways to follow our passions.

I grew up in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, where India's first Iron and Steel company was set by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. This is the place where I enjoyed cycling, sketching, video gaming as well as other outdoor activities. Combining those experiences with the city life has been a wonderful complement.

At Jamshedpur I went to Motilal Nehru Public School. That was an awesome schooling experience because that is where my true interest and passion for art, design and video games developed and were nurtured. Even though I was a Computer Science student, most of the time I used to spend sketching things from other world and gaming.

I am now living at Bangalore learning communication design in NIFT and working to perfect the way I use technology with effective design. Our college does not teach game design so I am a self starter in this field. Anyways learning so much about graphics design has help me a lot as I find it applicable to game design too.

I can be contacted at [email protected] or on +91 9916 391 501. My online portfolio can be viewed online at http://www.behance.net/XLR8.

Art Nouveau CG Environment

A long time (about a year) back I was going through a website studying about the architecture of Art Nouveau style. I was inspired by the beauty of the art, the elegant use of curves. After after a few weeks I planned to design a video game environment inspired from Art Nouveau.

I started by making a few very rough concept sketchs. I made few sketches of the environment compostion and Art Nouveau props.

And then i finally started modelling out the environment in 3d using 3D Studio Max. After completing the scene, i tried taking out artistic renders using vray. Then i post processed them using Photoshop Light room.

Here are few post processed renders of the environment.

Page 9: The Portfolio- Ritesh Kumar
Page 10: The Portfolio- Ritesh Kumar

Finally to make this as a game environment, i exported all the meshes of the environment with their texture maps into UDK. This project is still under WIP (work in progress). Here are few screen shots of work progress in UDK.

First Concept ArtsI love sketching. There was a time when I used to fill my text books with sketches and get scolded by my teachers and parents for doing so. Here is what my few attempt over Photoshop for making my sketch even better.

The first group of concept arts is a visual representation in form of illustration of the characters of my very own video game.

The other one shows a fossilized dinosaur while the last one shows a 3D logo typeface composed with Photoshop.

Page 13: The Portfolio- Ritesh Kumar

Stepping into level & Environment CreationThis environment is created in UDK using the inbuilt props and meshes. This was a modded map for UT3 designed in UDK. At this time I hardly knew about designing my own 3d meshes for the games! Before designing this work, as my pre-process work I studied various meshes and other tools provided in UDK. I made few random concept sketches of the environment and after that I stared working in UDK for designing this environment.

Machines ObsessionI always wanted to create something massive. The place to which I belong, Jamshedpur is known as steel city of India. Heavy machineries and huge industries and greenery, that's what I've seen since my childhood. I was always obsessed with machines. And one can imagine how "looking at steel factories", that obsession gets into new heights.

When I was learning UDK basics (using its own inbuilt assets to create a game level) , one of the most important thing that I wanted to do was designing a level in the steel factory. Taking inspiration from the UT Deck layout, I made a whole map into a factory.

My Virtual SchoolAfter my 10 +2 results, the time came when I had to say goodbye to my school forever. One day sitting on my computer and watching my school images I just imagined about a video game based on my school. I always like the infrastructure of my school. So I decide to design my whole school on UDK. This was the time I first stepped into 3d modelling. I therefore decide not to use any of UDK inbuilt assets this time. Rather i would use my own 3d models. The whole school architecture was designed using BSP brushes of UDK except the fountain which I made on 3ds max and then exported into UDK.

Page 16: The Portfolio- Ritesh Kumar

Unsuccessful DreamsI had a wonderful dream to pursue my game design education from one of the renowned game institute in India- DSK supinfocom! Unfortunately I never made into that college even after cracking their entrance with good marks.

This scenario is the recreation of that college. I did this in UDK when they released its March 2010 version. I was always attracted to architecture. Interestingly, I find it the most wonderful thing created by humans after machines.

When I went to When I went to see the college, I found the buildings nice and minimal.. I took a few pictures and using few other pictures from internet I made a virtual college. I made it using the inbuilt assets that were provided in UDK.

Retail Space Design for KAZO brandThis was a part of assignment for visual merchandising project in which we had to design a stand-alone retail outlet for any clothing brand. I took KAZO as my brand. Referring to Promostyl i took LESS as my theme for Summer/Spring 2014 season and lighting flux as a sub-theme.

Ancient- Character DesignAncient is mine own game concept based on ancient alien theories. This image shows the creation of its lead character.

Page 20: The Portfolio- Ritesh Kumar

The TruckA concept truck with a rocket launcher at its back and blades on its from. This design is inspired from the anatomy of scorpions.

The rear launcher represents the folded tail of the scorpions while the blades represents the powerful claws.

The body of the truck is like a beast and is about 15 feet's high.

UDK Real-time Interior IlluminationA project by Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The office building took almost 5 days to be modelled and textured. The seven storied building was so huge that it took more than 3 hrs. to render 1 frame. We needed to render a 10 min walkthrough. Therefore 3ds Max was not sufficient to render the whole walkthrough.

We exported everything into UDK and through its real-time rendering, things became a lot easier. We made the whole walkthrough by capturing a video while playing the map as a video game.

Alphabets to Assets

This was one of the very first assignments which we got in foundation programme level II. It was the same assignments for which I designed my R-City. There were many more alphabets which I designed with their own unique features.

There are few of designs that I found really impressive as i can use them for my game design inspiration. The uniqueness of texture, material and mood on them makes them fit to be used as an asset or a prop for video games. I plan to make a 3D version of all these alphabets using 3D application like 3Ds max, make manual textures and use it for my game design projects. However till now ihaven't made any 3D alphabets based on this design as i am already working on a video game which has entire different concept.

Irresistible Paradox

The irresistible force paradox, also called the unstoppable force paradox, is a classic paradox formulated as "What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?" This paradox is a form of the omnipotence paradox, which is a simple demonstration that challenges omnipotence: ("Can God create a stone so heavy it cannot be lifted, not even by God Himself?"). The immovable object and the irresistible force are both implicitly assumed to be indestructible, or else the question would have a trivial resolution ("it destroys it"). Furthermore, it is assumed that they are two separate entities, since an irresistible force is implicitly an immovable object, and vice versa.

Houses of Randomly Scattered

I had the best time in NIFT during foundation programmelevel II. This was the time when I explored most of the creative side of me. Learnt many styles, invented few of mine too. Sometimes there were so many ideas in my mind that I have to put them as houses of randomly scattered :)

War-field Stories

An attempt on story-telling! I wanted to make a story board of an entire level for a video game. Taking some inspiration from battlefield 3 second level-Operation Sword breaker, I finally came up with this story board.

The story starts when a solider finds himself lying unconscious on the border of a nearby enemy land. He soon realizes that he got fainted when a bomb blasted a few meters away, while his troops were trying to capture the enemy land. He wakes up and tries to get out of there. He finds a vehicle near a bunker. In order to get to it, he kills the enemy solider guarding that bunker. He takes the RPG which the enemy was carrying. He suddenly hears a sound of the tank heading towards him. He launches the RPG and the tank gets destroyed.

Due to the sound of the blasting of the tank the nearby troop gets aware and starts looking for the suspect. They start open fire in the alerted zone. Our solder tries to defend himself and somehow manages to get on the vehicle. Soon he escapes the enemy land before things gets even worst.

When he reaches his state, he comes to know that there were a few enemies near the capital zone of his state. He along with other members of his troop sets on a mission to blast that building off in which the rebellions were hiding. They reach the roof of a building nearby and fire few RPGs on the suspected building. The building soon gets damaged enough and falls down killing all the rebellions. Finally his mission ends as a successful one.

Raptor- raptorization

I was working on a project in which we were supposed to study movements of animal. After that we had to sketch out a fame of its movement. To take it into a whole new level we also had to sketch out its abstract, stylized and geometrical form.

All together we had to sketch four different frames with four different abstract, stylized and geometrical forms for each.

Since childhood I was always obsessed with dinosaurs. So I tried studding movements of dinosaur. Here is my creation. This is what I did.

Branding Spirituality

As a communication design student, for my Integrated Term Project i was asked to rebrand any handicraft organization or a cottage industry of India.

Kolkata, an Indian metropolis, about 300kms away from my hometown Jamshedpur is well known for its art and literature throughout the world. I knew that there is a huge community of icon-artisans at Kolkata mostly dwell in poor living conditions, serving this city with most of the clay idols during Durga puja. They have been doing this since last three centuries but still their art is hardly recognized by most of us.

. Therefore this branding project aims to build up a brand image for this community, helping them to promote their art, literature and business through ads, promotional materials, stationeries and other collaterals.

The essence of spirituality was the main focus to be maintained during the whole branding process.

La Création

La Creation is a science and entertainment magazine. After getting inspired from Billboard magazine, I thought of redesigning it into a new magazine. This magazine was a part of an assignment. The purpose for making it was to compose all the articles of journalism into one printable medium.

The ‘R’- City

Since the very beginning of my childhood, I have always loved to draw city-scapes. This time I sketched it out in a perspective view, making sure its in a layout of "R". This is why its called the "R"-City.

This city like most of the real city has every infrastructure. Right from tall skyscrapers to huge stadiums, ports to sea side amusement parks, mega bridges to down town areas, etc.

Imagining Data in Motion

These are experimental shots. I was wondering looking at my desktop's motherboard, how does data or electricity flows through this chip. To me, the motherboard looks like a city layout more than just a chip. If we consider those grid circuits as streets and data as vehicles flowing through it. Lets assume we to be a static data particle, so from our view of perspective this is how it will look.
