Dearest Viewer,My goals initially for the class were simple:

Get an English credit and thus open up my schedule for more AP classes next year.

But beyond this simple goal, I have learned from this class. I have discovered Animoto; I have discussed the words of great men with my peers; I have created poetry. Most importantly, I have learned how to work well online.

I discovered that communicating with other computers requires compromising and using inferior programs such as Internet Explorer. I discovered the versatility of using multiple tabs. I learned to not procrastinate, because procrastination leads to unnecessary stress.

Sincerely,Sunjay Kumar

The Work Portfolio

We had assignments all summer long; here’s the best of them!

Macbeth; Appearance v. Reality: Animoto Videos

• In the theme of “Appearance of Reality”, these videos use photos and Photoshop Elements 5.0 to create illusions and contradictory pictures.

• In the theme of “Once Upon A Time”, these videos use allegories from a misty past-time to connect to current reality.

• From this assignment I learned how artists create illusions as representations of reality using photography and photomanipulation. I learned how to use allegory to make relevant statements. I also learned how to connect poetry and melody in songs to other media.

• In the future I will explore further the potential of fabricated images and learn the importance of various elements of color and balance to support my purpose.

Unit 3 Post-Assessment; 07/13; Goals 4, 5

MacbethAppearance versus Reality

7

Stream of Consciousness: Civic Literacy

• This represents the theme of “Changing Poetry in a Changing World” because it is a poem about the modern world, showing how political poetry has developed.

• This also represents the theme of “What’s the Point?” by taking a stance and arguing it.

• I learned from this assignment how to represent my views in a fun and accessible way, and also how stream of consciousness writing works.

• I could extend my knowledge by researching further what authorities say on the subject. Also I could try putting my thoughts into this format when I have them more often. Maybe I could even start a blog of these.

Unit 5 Discussion Board; 07/20; Goal 1

Page 8: A Portfolio (Sunjay Kumar)

8

Plot Framework: Mystery

• The “British Women and Culture” theme is displayed in the various female characters in the plotted story. They’re multiple non-standard roles show how women have progressed in the culture.

• From this assignment I discovered the amount of work that writers of mysteries have to put into finding original plots. I also experimented with a writing style based more or less on film noir.

• In order to extend my knowledge, I could attempt to extend a similar exercise to other British genres, such as Victorian realism.

4.3 Plot Framework; 07/11; Goals 2, 6

• The “Principles and Predictions” theme is exemplified by the use of common themes in mystery to compose a plot to a mystery story.

• The “Satire, Parody and Lampoon” theme is shown in how this story satirizes in part mysteries through exaggeration.

Page 9: A Portfolio (Sunjay Kumar)

9

Port Cities Venn Diagram

• This represents the theme of “Mariners and Pirates” as it concerns port cities.

• From this I learned some interesting comparisons between different British cities, and also how to compare things better.

• To extend my learning in this subject, I could visit different world cities.

6.5 Port Cities; 07/23; Goals 2, 5

Page 10: A Portfolio (Sunjay Kumar)

10

Energy Revolution! PowerPoint• This reflects the theme of “Principles and Predictions” by

extrapolating solutions from data.• The theme of “What’s the Point?” is also evidenced by the

argumentative nature of the presentation.• From this assignment I learned how to use creative problem

solving skills and knowledge of the current generation to theorize a way to protect the future.

• Beyond this assignment I could lobby my congressional representatives and senators to support environmental legislation, thus increasing my knowledge of political practice.

Unit 4 Post-Assessment; 07/11; Goals 2, 3

A Very “Novel” Section

(Actually, it’s a poetry and prose gallery on DeviantArt.)

Warning: For art’s sake, the author doesn’t capitalize some titles. They are not typos.

Sweet-Bloody-TearsGallery

The author of the gallery identifies herself as “Alex”, a female living in Canada.

The gallery contains works of both poetry and prose, along with some visual art in various media. Chocolate Addict, a

picture in the gallery representing the theme of “Satire,

Parody, and Lampoon” with self-

aware humor.

(Her username is Sweet-Bloody-Tears)

13

Changing Poetry in a Changing

World

By using different shapes for the lines and unusual capitalization in this stanza of the poem “2:42”, the author plays with

emphasis and theme.

This stanza of “Thomas.” is an example of modern free verse’s ability to use contrast

in a more obvious way. It also switches voices using brackets.

One of the newer poetry forms is, ostensibly oxymoronically, prose-

poetry. This form of writing (used in this paragraph of “Now”) has the aural and figurative language of poetry, but

without stanzas or fixed meter.

14

Appearance versusReality

“ephemeral” is a poem that uses religious imagery to explore the imperfection and squalor of the human experience. The expectation did not match with truth.

Perhaps a better theme in this prose-poem is Reality versus Reality. The text of this paragraph of “my pretty words, your pretty smile” creates a symbolic relationship between the autumn and aspects of human nature.

“Bad Poetry”, this poem, muses on the effect of different expectations and conceptions in human relationships. Emotions distort reality and change its appearance.

Page 15: A Portfolio (Sunjay Kumar)

15

Women and CultureSince the author of the gallery is female, it’s not surprising that

there are portions of her gallery pertaining to women’s issues.

In the comments of “your words, my heart, my blood”, the author comments that she wrote this after a male teacher tried to force his bigoted beliefs on her.

For writing it she received detention. The rage in the imagery is unmistakable.

“I Can’t Understand” is an empathetic look at the effects of homophobia on a female student. It uses pathos to convince people to change their beliefs, and thus also connects to the “What’s The Point?” theme.

Character Connection

The thing about poetry is that it’s often autobiographical. So when I say that I am like the narrator of this prose I am also saying I am like the author of the prose, the author of the gallery. This poem was inspired by a song I know well, so well that I often end up playing it on the piano, and when once I was in love it fit my feelings perfectly. When I read this poem I remembered how that felt.

I will tell you that when you said that I cared about her more than you I felt betrayed by lack of faith because you should know that I'd pick you over the very sun itself. – it’s not hard to fall

Summary and Rating

I would have given five stars for a teen audience because there are poems and proses in this gallery that I believe every teen should read. However, the delicacy of emotions displayed within certain other works would be misunderstood by a large number of teens, so I would not suggest anyone who isn’t willing to suspend the amused mindset to read the entire gallery.

Advice, Reflecting, and Looking Forward

• To future students: Please post in the Discussion Boards as early as possible. It gives your peers more options about who to reply to.

• What is a virtual classroom like? It’s like a bunch of assignments that you have to remember to slog through. But that’s okay because they generally aren’t too hard.

• The future, you ask? College applications for the rest of summer. Hooray!
