the Secretary-General to initiate thinking on global development

agenda beyond 2015

Sustainable Development initiated a process to develop

Sustainable Development Goals.

High-Level Panel (HLP)‘ A New Global Partnership: Eradicate Poverty

and Transform Economies through Sustainable Development’ was submitted to

the Secretary-General (May 2013).

Open Working Group (OWG)8 sessions, 26 major themes with contributions from “major groups”

(stakeholders)”. Proposal for SDGs to be presented at 69th UNGA (sep 2014)

UN System Task Team on the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda.Lead by ECOSOC -’Realizing the Future We Want for All’ (June 2012)

Government negotiations commence after 69th UNGA in Sep. 2014. Final Framework to be launched at the 70th UNGA in Sep 2015

Energy goals and IndicatorsLooking at proposals in – HLP report, SDG/OWG, SDSN,

Global Compact, Energy4All, UN-NGLS Common trends:

Sustainable energy included as a goal, while some have linked goal with climate change; Separate urban resilience goal that includes transport

Common targets:Universal access to modern energy services with an emphasis on needs of women and childrenImprovements in energy efficiency – in power generation, urban planning, production systems, transport systemsIncrease share of renewable energy in the global energy mix – most specify doubling renewable energy in the mix
