The Prehistoric Society Research Papers – outline proposal

Notes to potential applicants

The Prehistoric Society Research Papers publish collections of edited papers covering aspects of Prehistory. These may be derived from conferences, or research projects; they specifically exclude the publication of single excavation reports. The Research papers present the fruits of the best of prehistoric research, complementing the Society’s respected Proceedings by allowing broader treatment of key research areas.

The Research Papers is a peer reviewed series whose production is managed by the Society and published with Oxbow Books. It is supported by the Society’s Managing Editor, a Series Editor, and an Editorial Advisory Panel. Volumes are typically up to 100,000 words, and do not normally include colour without consultation with the Society, and the provision of requisite funding.

The Society’s involvement in any conference, day school or study tour does not guarantee acceptance for publication in this series.

The Prehistoric Society will aim to contribute towards the cost of volumes, but expects that a contribution towards publication will be investigated and sought by the applicants. Like the Society’s Proceedings, proposed titles are accepted for publication on their content and academic merit; funding alone will not secure publication.

The Council will endeavour to make and ratify a decision as soon as is feasible, and recognises that often there is great impetus gained from conferences, and thus urgency in receiving a decision as soon as possible after the conference. The Council of the Society will normally make a decision within four months of submission. Applicants may wish to take note of council meeting dates given on our website (www.ucl.ac.uk/prehistoric).

Many conferences, day schools and seminars do not work well as a collection of written papers. In compiling your proposal you should ensure that there is a coherent theme for the volume, and as such request contributors to modify, or submit alternative, papers for publication. Following conference you may consider it prudent to invite additional papers to enhance your themes and embellish other topics and research areas, and exclude some verbal presentations from the published collection.

The Society will appoint a member from its Publication Sub-Committee or Council to edit the volume with you. The process and progress will be overseen and managed on behalf of the Society by its Managing Editor.

The Society’s Managing Editor, or Series Editor (see past volumes or the Society website for details) will be happy to provide some advice and guidance, but the final decision of acceptance is made by the Society’s Council.

Please feel free to contact the Societies Managing editor or Series Editor’s to discuss your proposals informally, but all formal proposals should be submitted to the Society’s Administrative Assistant, The Prehistoric Society, Institute of Archaeology, 31-34 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PY.
