“First in war, first in peace first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

•John Adams: 2nd President -The Supreme Court gained power as a result of the actions of President Adams. Supreme Court used power of Judicial Review in case of Marbury vs. Madison.

President’s House, Washington, DC

•George Washington: 1st President of the United States of America under the Constitution.

-As the 1st President of the US, Washington set many precedents.

-He organized and implemented the new government under the US Constitution.

-Oversaw the creation of the US Supreme Court. He appointed the 1st Chief Justice: John Jay.

-Stabilized the economy.

-Put down the Whiskey Rebellion.

-Created Presidential Cabinet to advise.

•During the 1790’s, 2 political parties emerge in the US.

•Thomas Jefferson: 3rd President -Purchased the Louisiana Territory From France. This doubled the size of the US. Sent Lewis and Clark to explore the territory.

•The Louisiana Territory was added in 1803. This was the largest addition of land to the US. President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore and map this land.

•James Madison: 4th President -The War of 1812 is fought during this time. -US vs. Great Britain: Neither side wins. -GB invades and burns Capital building and President’s house. -Francis Scott Key writes Star Spangled Banner.

•Andrew Jackson defeats the British at the Battle of New Orleans and becomes a national hero.

•James Monroe: 5th President -Monroe Doctrine: Principle that stated 1. Europe stay out of America’s 2. US oppose any colonization by Europe 3. US would stay out of Europe

•In 1818 Congress decided to keep the number of stripes in the flag at 13 and just add stars for each new state.

•John Quincy Adams: 6th President -Erie Canal built during this time. -Makes transportation faster, safer,and cheaper.

•The Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes to the Hudson River. (Buffalo to Albany) Boats were pulled along the canal by horses or mules.

•Andrew Jackson: 7th President

-The People’s President: As president, Jackson allowed ordinary Americans to become more involved in the government.

•Indian Removal Act: 1830 -Congress passed this law which allowed Pres. Jackson to give land to Indians in the west in exchange for their lands in the east.

•Trail of Tears: In 1830, 16,000 Cherokee Indians were forced off their land and forced to march over 1,000 to a reservation in Oklahoma. On the trip, over 4,000 Indians died.
