Who is the High Priest? (Hebrews 9:11)

• Our Lord Jesus Christ is the head of the church.

He chose the 12 apostles and set them apart from everyone else.

“He called His disciples to Him, and from them He chose

twelve whom He named apostles” (Luke 6:13)

He commanded them to go forth and baptize people everywhere and teach them to observe His commandments.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the

Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I

have commanded you.” (Matthew 28: 9,20)

The Apostles were given Power

• The power to forgive sins and withhold forgiveness – You are Peter, and upon this rock I will

build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. (Matthew 16: 18-19)

• The power to work signs and wonders in His name. – So that even handkerchiefs (of Paul) or

aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. (Acts 19:12)

Page 18: The priesthood

St. John Chrysostom said…

• It is the priests who can do baptism = our spiritual birth

• By priests we put on Christ, and are united to the Son of God, and become members of that blessed head.

• So we should honor them more than princes and kings, and give them respect even more than our parents!– Because our mom and dad gave us physical birth - of

blood and the will of the flesh– But priests are the cause of our spiritual birth - of our

true freedom and son-ship according to grace of God.
