• Who do you think was the most influential person of the past 1,000 years? Why?

Johannes Gutenberg

• According to an A&E television panel in 1999

• Invented the printing press in 1454

• Argued that without Gutenberg, no great thinkers of Renaissance would have emerged

Objectives• Make a list of the effects of

Background on the Printing Press• Read and annotate the

“background essay”• When you’re finished,

answer the guiding questions

• Guiding Questions:– What was the greatest

event in human communication before the printing press? Why?

– How did the printing press change the way books were made?

– What was the first book printed by Gutenberg?

Document Rotation

• Divide into 6 groups• Each group will get 5

minutes to analyze their document and complete the graphic organizer

• When we are done with the document rotation, you must decide on the most important consequence of the printing press
