Education is one of the sectors that has taken the worst hit in the wake of corona pandemic. The virus has suddenly thrown a new epiphany we perhaps were never ready for. Who ever thought that 'work from home' will be a new normal while we grew up assuming we have to step out to make a living? Who ever imagined that one day children will suddenly be confined within the confines of their 'homes' and will be telelearning? Perhaps we never realised how close we were to a monumental shift as far as normal transactions are concerned. The second wave of corona pandemic has hit us very badly. Suddenly, we were caught unawares. The gains

made in the past in re-opening the school seem to come back to square one. In spite of what we have learnt

about the virus, it seems enough is not enough till there is a permanent cure for it. It seems the tunnel is quite

long before we see the light at the end of it, but yes, this too shall pass.

It is heartening to see parents supporting the school in a big way. The huge response to the admission tests for

Classes IV-IX held in February is a huge motivator for us.

The Passing Out Ceremony of ISC Batch-2021 held in February was presided over by Brig Narendra Singh,

Cdr, 1 Armd Bde. I sincerely hope the Brigadier's clarion call to the Nabhaites to chase their dreams will inspire

them for a higher purpose in life. The event was followed by ONA Induction Ceremony on March 1, 2021 which

was presided over by Brig HPS Bedi, VSM, President ONA. It is an annual exercise to connect the outgoing

batch with the PPS family. I am sanguine about the bonds getting stronger with the passage of time.

Finally, the scintillating performance of our taekwondo squad at the 4th Punjab Taekwondo Cup held at

Playway Senior Secondary School, Patiala was a moment of pride for the school. The haul of 13 medals–6 gold,

2 silver and 5 bronze speaks volumes about the efforts put in. I wish them the best of luck for the forthcoming

tournaments.

PPS kicks off Academic Session 2021 on a high note

While reputed schools of the country are still grappling with the ramifications of the pandemic, The Punjab Public School has emerged as a beacon of hope for countless parents looking for a good institution and a bright future for their wards in the wake of the damage corona has done to the education sector. While it took other schools almost 11 months to open and get going, PPS kept itself abreast of every change happening and prepared itself well in advance to absorb the after-effects of lockdown. Parents turning up in great number for the Entrance Test held on Sunday, i.e. February 7 for Classes IV to IX again reaffirms their faith in the institutional framework which they have consistently shown over the years. It goes without saying the direction given by Chairman Shri VP Singh Badnore and ever supportive management has made it all possible. The initiatives taken by Headmaster Mr Ajay Singh since assuming office on September 1, 2020 has paid dividends. He has gone out of the way to convince parents to send their children to school. Largely due to the leadership provided by him, the school welcomed students from Classes VI-VIII back on the campus on February 8, 2021. A DJ Party was organised on February 10 to formally welcome the students to their sweet home “PPS Nabha”.

Junior School Appointments take charge

The much-awaited Oath Taking Ceremony for Junior School Appointments for the Academic Session (2020-21) finally materialised on March 5, 2021. In a special assembly convened for the purpose, the school appointments were administered the oath of office by Headmaster Mr Ajay Singh. It was a moment of pride for the appointees as their citations were read out highlighting their achievements over the years. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Singh enumerated seven qualities which a leader must have. These include resilience, flexibility, communication, courage, humility, presence and responsibility or accountability. A true leader is always resilient in the face of adversities. He takes every challenge in his stride. He should be flexible as the grass which is not rattled while facing the strong currents of wind. He should cultivate adaptability in his personality. Communication refers to the art of connecting with the led and the ability to reach out. He should have the knack of persuasion. Courage, a grossly misunderstood term, refers more to the ability to stand up to any wrong and the ability to do the right thing at the right time. It also means to stand alone to the ridicule of the zealots. Determination and patience are other manifestations of it. Humility does not imply subservience but acting realistically without being snobbish. Presence is the strength of character. A leader's very presence speaks of his work ethics. He means business. Responsibility or accountability are his hallmark. The proceedings concluded with the singing of the national anthem. Mr NS Deol, Head, Junior Wing was present on the occasion.

Class-XI bids farewell to ISC Batch-2021

To say that the passing away of Mr Dar came as a

shock to me is an understatement. Only about a

month back, I talked with him and his wife. Life took a

sudden turn for the worst and the coronavirus

claimed his life.

I vividly remember his first day at the PPS when we

were all introduced to him in the staff room. Our

friendship was established forever.

Hard work, discipline, honesty, integrity and moral

values were some of the traits that endeared us all to

Mr Dar. In social gatherings, he was always sought

after. He made friends easily. Being a genuine and

empathetic person, he won many hearts. He was

known to come to the level of any person and had no

airs about himself.

He immersed himself in the culture of Punjab and

wanted to understand the culture, feelings, as well

as the views of Punjabis. I was surprised one day

when I saw him sitting in a bus with two other

passengers and discussing with them the culture,

politics, family history, etc. I later learnt that he used

to take such trips on weekends on regular basis.

What a practical way to understand the values,

views, and culture of a region.

A week or two of my summer breaks were spent in

Delhi with him and his parents every year. His father

was the Headmaster of Navug Public School, Delhi.

16

Mr Dar–an intimate friend

With profound sorrow, we inform you of the demise of our

former member of the faculty Mr Kailash Nath Dar on May 18,

2021 after bravely fighting a tough battle against COVID 19 for a

fortnight. Mr Dar was a noble soul, an educator par excellence

and a man of many parts. He will always be fondly remembered

as a passionate mentor and an excellent teacher imparting skills

to his students. The PPS fraternity deeply mourns the loss of one

of the stalwarts in the field of education. The Headmaster, staff

and students pray to the Almighty to give peace to the departed

soul and strength to the family to bear the irreparable loss.

RIP

We had the whole school to ourselves during

summer holidays. Both Mr Dar and his wife Shashi

were the best hosts one could ask for. Being

interested in my welfare, he insisted that I should

consider moving to Delhi and arranged a job

interview with the Director of Oberoi Hotels.

Being in-charge of the History Society in the school,

he arranged for the students to meet biweekly. It was

a popular Society and the students' participation in

large number was a proof of its success. Once Mr

Dar wanted me to type about 100 pages of data for

the Society and insisted on paying me for the typing.

I refused to accept any payment. Next morning, I

found an envelope containing money under my

apartment door. I returned the money and we

settled for a lunch as a “thank you”.

His sense of humour was matchless. He could make

you laugh your head off. Singing was not his forte but

the only song we used to hum on occasions was

“Rammayya Vasta Vavvya”.

I have lost a gracious friend, mentor, guru. He

touched many lives. This void is not easy to fill. He has

left an indelible mark. Our loss is heaven's gain

Rammayya Vasta Vavvya, my friend!

Glimpses

Speech by Mr MS Chadha Adieu PPS!

Good evening everyone and thank you for coming to this get-together to mark my final day with PPS!Respected Headmaster, esteemed Deputy Headmaster, Hon'ble Bursar and my dear colleagues!Today I am formally and finally bidding adieu to PPS after having served as English teacher by shouldering various responsibilities for 36 long years. And I am forever thankful to PPS because PPS has become my identity.Creditably, I Ex-J266, a Punjab Govt Scholar, was groomed and raised in the class rooms, dormitories and play fields of this premier educational institution from January1970 to December1976. Good willed, I was destined to be both student and teacher at this great centre of learning. My appointment as English teacher was on 5th September 1984, which coincidentally was Teachers' Day.I vividly remember the day I entered the portals of this school. I felt thrilled as well as nervous to be part of those great stalwarts like Mr YP Johri, Maths teacher and Deputy Headmaster, Mr SMNL Nigam, Physics teacher, Mrs KP Tandon, Geography teacher, Mr PN Onial, Mr RD Chandola, English teachers, Mr SC Sharma, Mr KK Bansal, Chemistry teachers, Mr OP Sharma, Hindi teacher, Mrs Jasbir Butalia, Punjabi teacher and Mrs Sidhu, the Matron, under whose guidance I was groomed. All of them were an institution in themselves. After initial hesitation, I got along with them smoothly.I have been Housemaster for 11years for Junior, Middle and Senior Houses. During my stint as Housemaster, the House under my care was declared Cock House for all the 11 years. I have been NCC Officer Naval Wing (JD) for 32 years and Head of the English Department for 14 years. 100% Board results with all first divisions and above and many students having scored 100% marks in ICSE English Literature, speak volumes of the academic excellence of my English Department.I have been the Managing Editor of the school Chronicle for five years. I have been the Chief Announcer and Incharge of various activities like the Variety Entertainment Programme, Republic Day Bhangra at New Delhi in 1998, Dussehra Fete, Padma Shri JK Kate Memorial IPSC English Debate, Declamations, Poetical Recitation, Guard of

Honour, Tours and Treks and Manager of Sports teams to Mayo College, Ajmer and W e l h a m G i r l s ' S c h o o l , Dehradun. I got the opportunity to go to Malaysia and Singapore in 2000 and to Rugby School, UK in 2016 on Educational Exchange Programme.A few awards and honours were bestowed on me at PPS. These include Award of Honour on Teachers' Day in 1993, Best Teacher Award by the Chief Minister of Punjab on Founders' Day in 2007 and School Dronacharya Award for excellence in Board exams by the Governor of Punjab in 2013. I stood 3rd out of 82 NCC Officers from all over the country at the Refresher Course held at Vishakhapatnam in 2003. Covid-19

–J-00386 Akshat Sharma, VIIB

The global Covid-19 pandemic unexpectedly entered our lives and put everything to a halt.

It affected the lives of people around the world, bringing a flood of tension and worries

followed by negative thoughts and piles of boredom. But I took it as a challenge to handle

this situation with determination and positivity thereby making the most of the lockdown.

My parents motivated me to stay put with the challenge. I attended my virtual classes

seriously. The Punjab Public School, where I study, helped me a lot to come out real strong.

Though stringent lockdown is over for the time being, covid is not. So, stay home and stay

safe. Adhering to covid appropriate behaviour is the only way to deal with the menace.

There's nothing that I wouldn't do

Just to be with you.

You're a bright light in a sea of darkness

Who guides the way.

For men, women and children the same.

When I hear you,

I want to see you.

When I see you,

I want to be close to you.

You're the one thing that stays in my mind

Every single day and night

When I look around.

Every single day and night

When I look around

In every person, I see

Your face is staring at me.

Since the time we have been apart,

I can't see to start

My brain or my heart.

Now that we are together again

Oh! My dear sister, I'm here again

Magical in our imagination

Enter our dreams without any irritation.

In it nothing is bitter

Everything shines like a glitter.

Magic the boss

Takes everyone everywhere it goes.

Nothing to learn,

Nothing to earn.

Just use your imagination

And develop new creation.

Unicorn with a horn,

Beautiful new born.

Rainbow coloured hair

That everyone stares.

Use your imagination

And create beautiful creation.

–J-00503Gurleen Kaur, 6th Cambridge

I'll be there for you

Magical world

To irritate you until time's end.

We'll have our share of fun,

We'll probably get scolded too

But I just need you to know

That I'll be there for you.

–J00547Anya Bath, VII-D

If I were be a bird,

I would go around the world.

I would have wings to fly.

I would reach very high.

I would go to another place

And would have a fast race.

I would eat seeds

If someone would feed.

I would make a nest

To take good rest.

I would have a sharp beak

Which would help me to eat.

My eyesight would be so strong

That it would never lead me wrong.

I would have freedom to fly

Which would let me to play.

–B00424Pravleen Kaur, VII-C

Dreams are like GodThey are in our mindWe always try to findDreams are not flown. They are always in our homeThey are hard to findHard work should be in our life.Dreams are like our friendsThey are always with usWhen we are weak at somethingThey make us perfect.

–J-00380 Sohana Ahmed, VII-C

If I were be a birdDreams

Today when I saw the sky,

I had thoughts in my mind.

The wind blew

And my thoughts grew.

I was staring at the ground

And the wind was all around.

The first drop of rain fell

And everyone ran towards the hall.

I felt the drop of rain

When everyone called my name.

Headmaster's Mail

Dear Mr Singh,This is Avnoor Verma, an ex- PPS student. I am currently in Texas, USA. I just want to thank PPS. I can proudly say that I was a Nabhaite for four years. And today if I am able to speak good English and be in a country like the US without any troubles, all the credit goes to PPS Nabha. I can surely say it is the best school in India. And I really miss all the fun moments that I spent at PPS and all my teachers who made me have confidence in myself. I am thankful to my Housemistresses Ms Sapna Gill and Ms Swarjot Kaur for making me disciplined. I regularly visit PPS website and see all the pictures. I can surely say that the moments I spent there were the best moments of my life. I don't think that any other school can do things that PPS Nabha does for its students. I am really blessed that I was ever a part of PPS family. And whenever I come to India, I'll surely visit PPS and refresh all my memories. PPS will always stay in my heart. I don't know if anyone will read this email but if someone does, I'll be grateful. I am really thankful to all my teachers and all my friends. I miss my school. Yours sincerely,Avnoor Verma (R-00155)

Headmaster's Mail

The time has finally come for our Batch (ISC-2021) to bid farewell to the school, the teachers, our classmates, our juniors, and all the members of the PPS family. It is one of the most excruciating and emotional moments for a student to leave his/her school after studying in it for many years. It is even more difficult to leave a residential school where one spends most of one's time on the campus with friends and teachers.

I joined this school eight years back when all of my batch mates and I were relatively younger and naive. We learnt everything here. Those were the days when we would cry because everything was unfamiliar to us, but today we have tears of joy in our eyes

looking at those same faces and buildings, but the difference this time around is that these have become very familiar to us. Chills run down my spine whenever I think about the fact that we will never be able to come back to this school as students and we will never be able to wear the same uniform that we have cherished wearing for years now. Though we are leaving this school, the spirit of the school will never leave us. The values this school has taught us like discipline, teamwork, cooperation, and many other countless principles, will always remain with us throughout our lives.

A day will come when we will get together again as proud Old Nabhaites at this very place and discuss the wonderful times we have spent here.

May the Eagle always soar higher and higher!
