We watched the day dawning. Deep blue turned to gold, On the road to the tournament To witness history unfold. There she sat beside him; They laughed, then laughed more. She would stand with arms open to watch her tyger roar. for Love fights the good fight. Love raises the sword. Love holds up the banner. It holds back the horde. Love cares for the broken. Love avenges the fall. Love elevates the simple. It elevates us all. A crowd was assembled; The sun now burned bright. Tears with cheering mingled as his red belt turned to white. Rose then our Sir Brennan As his pretty Caoilfhionn shone. In this, as in every other thing, He would never be alone. For

Love fights the good fight. Love raises the sword. Love holds up the banner. It holds back the horde. Love cares for the broken. Love avenges the fall. Love elevates the simple. It elevates us all. The new Knight paced, ready. He entered the list, Gave honor to his lady From whom all honors exist. He took down his opponents. ’Twas hard to best his sword. His resolve seemed to double With each look from his adored. The autumn sun was waning when the final battle came. Determined to give her this, He fought now for her fame. It ended on a heart’s beat. His children with joy danced! He set a crown upon his lady; All who saw it were entranced.

Love Conquers All – The Lay of Brennan and Caoilfhionn

This song was inspired by the deed day of my friend, war-brother, pro-tector, Brennan MacFeargus on the day he became first, Sir Brennan,

and then Prince Brennan. His love for his lady Caoilfhionn* and family served as his inspiration (for good reason – they’re wonderful) and so in

return for her long love, he made her Princess Caoilfhionn. That is totally worth singing about. By Baroness Aneleda Falconbridge

Love fights the good fight. Love raises the sword. Love holds up the banner. It holds back the horde. Love cares for the broken. Love avenges the fall. Love elevates the simple. It elevates us all. In one day a knight – a prince - Crowned true love with gold. Love lead all the virtues, for in it others must enfold. None forget the moment As the stars did rise that fall When Eastern prince and princess proved that love could really conquer all.

Love fights the good fight. Love raises the sword. Love holds up the banner. It holds back the horde. Love cares for the broken. Love avenges the fall. Love elevates the simple. It elevates us all. We will do this together. Our love elevates us all. ________________________

Also mahtu auch von epfeln un von küten aber man sol pfeffers genau dar zu tun. Translation: This is how you want to make a food. Trim fine pears and divide in four. And lay them in a pot and cover the pot and coat it with dough, so that the vapor can get out. Then cover the pot with a broad cover and lay there about glowing coals and let it slowly bake. So take then the pears out (of the fire?) and add clean honey therein, as much as the pear is, and boil it together so that it becomes thick and give it out. So you can make also from apples and from quinces but one should add pepper enough thereto. (Ein Büch von Güter Speise) Recipe: Peel & core apples. Roast until soft. Mash with honey, add spices (white pepper, ginger, cinna-mon, cloves, allspice, etc.). Keep warm in a hot oven. My version: I peel & core apples, & slice into wedges. Place apples into a baking dish, sprinkle with spices (white pepper (just a little), ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, etc.) & pour enough hon-ey to coat apples. Mix ingredients together & place in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-45 minutes until tender. Also good for pie filling!!! Just place uncooked into pie shell, cover with another pie shell (vent) & bake

Their Majesties wish to continue the tradition of giving drinking cups to newcomers. If you have spare cups you are willing to donate to this cause, please

bring them to a Royal Progress event. Their Majesties are also in need of cords for award medallions. These cords need to be fairly thin and be at least 32 inches long. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].

The Cross and Lily Tournament December is by tradi-tion a surprise odd weapons format. Come out and fight! If you have any questions about the Cross and Lily tournament feel free to contact Sir Byrce de Byram.

    The Century Challenge

A number of us have been participating in a

"Century Challenge" of Pell Work. Like most good ideas I stole this

shamelessly from someone else (in this case from one of the Western

Kingdoms). The idea is simple : Do 100 Pell blows a day, for 100 Days.

(10,000 blows at the successful completion). Start over if you miss a

day. Currently there are a number of us in the barony and around the

kingdom that are completing our second pass through this drill for

2013. (The first time we had four fighters: Me, Balin, Abran, and Henri-

cus complete the drill for a combined 40,000 blows) We are using Social

Media to keep a running tally and to help us stay focused and account-

able. (we use an email list to share what drills we are doing to help

share ideas and give us a pool of choices to pick from when deciding

that days lesson plan.) As of this writing we in the mid 80's (early No-

vember) and should finish up just before 100 Minutes War, the goal end

date. (the goal end day of the last challenge was just before Ruby Joust).

Caveat: I don't teach striking the pell, (especially an unpadded pell!)

hard as this tends to lead to repetitive stress injuries. Rather we focus

on shot placement, movement, cycling blows and returns. Even done

slowly this only takes about 15 minutes a day. Some folks have had to

miss days because of travel or sickness and have decided to 'double up'

or pick up where they had to stop to finish out the drill. While this isn't

in the original rules of the challenge, the whole purpose is to get people

thinking about fighting and doing extra credit outside of practice and

events. I am personally happy that at the end of the year I can say that

at the very least I have had a sword-like object

in my hand doing drills for 200 out of 365 days.

While it is easier to do this as a group you cer-

tainly can do it on your own. After the first

round of the drill we saw marked skill increase

in all four fighters who participated to the end. I

encourage all aspiring fighters (armoured or ra-

pier) to try this useful exercise. If you have any

    questions please contact me.

Chapter and Verse This month I don’t have a book review for you. However, I do want to remind you that when you are thinking about holiday gift giving, think books! I give both new and ,when possible, used books. The treasures contained inside a book isn’t diminished one whit by having been read by someone before you gift it to another. It adds character! I did a Quick search of Amazon for “SCA” and it yielded the following possible gift books: 1) The Knowne World Atlas: A Territorial Maps & Heraldry Coloring Book for the Soci-ety for Creative Anachronisms 2) Medieval Fantasy as Performance: The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Current Middle Ages 3) The Knights Next Door: Everyday People Living Middle Ages Dreams 4) Murder at the War

Putting Out The Virtual Welcome Mat! Helping our newcomers find information about the SCA in an engaging and

easy to use way can sometimes be a challenge. The society has

launched a new online newcomers portal to help them along the

way. Check it out at : http://welcome.sca.org

If you are an SCA parent, consider helping with this survey about youth activi-ties:

Atlantia will be once again hosting the St. Sebastian's archery shoot at Pennsic next year. The theme will be Safari and help is needed! Contact-Janyn Fletcher!

    Caer Mear Yule!

    Don’t forget that even though

our Yule event is sold out, you

can asked to be placed on

    a wait list!

Savory Toasted Cheese The Stuff of Legend!

Savory toasted cheese (STC) was one of the very first foods I heard about when becoming a part of the SCA several years ago. The other was armored turnips! STC is truly a standard. It also seems to have many variations all of which are

tempting! It seemed appropriate during this holiday time to share your humble Chronicler’s recipe for this staple dish.

My Basic STC recipe created from trial and error 1/4 cup butter (allow to soften a bit) 1/2 cup cream cheese 1/2 cup Brie 3 Tbsp. whole milk Pinch tsp. white pepper Pinch dry mustard Combine in oven safe bowl/dish and bake for 15-20 minutes checking for the lovely brown bubbly top! Now this is where things get fun! There is a veritable pantry of goodies that folks add to this to make it their own! -Bacon -Broccoli -Diced Ham -Green beans -Peas -Asparagus -Onion -Sausage and even homemade BBQ! Just a few of the things I have played around with as add-ons. One the very best things on a cold evening! Now get some crusty bread and enjoy!

Did you see the newest Kingdom newsletter? The Acorn is available now online and easy to access. I enjoy reading news from

other kingdoms as well! You never know what you might learn. http://enewsletter.sca.org/

Have something to Share? This newsletter exists to serve the people of Caer Mear. If there is something you’d like to have put in the Quid Novi (QD), please let me know. I am always looking for

    material.
