President’s Message Karen Moss

The February 3, 2014, meeting of the Friendship Star Quilt(FSQ) Guild was held at the Gaithersburg Church of the Nazarene. Karen Moss, guild president, called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last guild meeting were approved

as published in the newsletter. New members were welcomed to the guild. Due to some technical difficulties with the audio-

visual equipment, Karen Moss was unable to give her planned presentation on the FSQ guild budget and finances. Instead, Karen will give her presentation and lead a discussion of budget strategies during the March 2014 guild meeting. The March edition of The Quiltline newsletter will include information on the budget, so please read the budget article before next month’s meeting so you are prepared to participate in the discussion.

Two members, Barbara Morten and Barbara Kilby, have volunteered to serve on the nomination committee. This year three guild board positions are open – the president, the vice president, and the

treasurer. The secretary has agreed to continue. One more volunteer is needed for this important nominating committee. Karen Moss will provide committee members with clear descriptions of the duties of the officers for their use in soliciting nominees. Anyone interested in volunteering should let Karen know. (Contact: Karen Moss)

A change has been made to the room fees for the June 6-8, 2014, retreat. The single-occupancy rooms are offered at $250 and double-occupancy rooms at $212. The price includes dinner on Friday, three meals on Saturday, and two meals on Sunday. The June retreat will be held in Chambersburg, PA, at the Rhodes Grove Conference Center that is located about 90 minutes from Gaithersburg. The large facility features a nice and bright room for quilting and has been recommended by other guilds. Registration for the June 2014 retreat is now open to other guilds. A $50 deposit should be paid to Teresa Petersen. (Contact: Nancy Brennan or Teresa Peterson)

Guild Meeting Minutes—February 3, 2014 Ann Ramey-Smith

I hope everyone weathered the last major snow event we had with little fanfare and how about the weather today (Sunday, Feb 23), just awesome. Spring is just around the corner and I can’t wait to be outside just a bit more getting some of that good old fashion Vitamin D.

As I mentioned in a previous article, this year I’ve pledged to focus a lot on quilting for others. What I’ve done to keep me on track was make a plan to complete one quilt top for Service Projects every week in 2014. Guess what? I’m still on target; eight full weeks so far in 2014 and I’ve got 8 tops ready to give to the group. What fun it’s been to come up with some cute quilts (tops) that I can actually finish in a week and sometimes in just a couple of days. I don’t get the chance very often to actually create many quilts for children and the fabric out there is just so darn cute; I’m loving it!

On a totally different note, please take a minute to review the article in the newsletter relating to the Guild’s budget. I’ve tried to make it as simple as I can, targeting information that is important to know about

the Guild’s budget status. Please come to the March meeting with any questions you may have and we’ll do our best to provide answers.

And, exciting news…we have a full complement of volunteers for our Nominating Committee. Thanks to Barbara Morten, Barbara Kilby and Teresa Peterson for stepping up to help search out nominations for our 2014-2015 slate of officers. Think about serving the Guild in one of the officer positions. It’s not only a great way to find out how the Guild operates and to participate in shaping future directions, but also a great way to get acquainted with more members. If you’re interested in or know of someone who might be interested in serving as one of the Guild’s Officers, please contact one of the Nominating Committee members above.

Happy Quilting!

Karen

Jane Phillips thanked those guild members who participated in the service project held on January 15th at Fairhaven United Methodist Church. A total of 616 fleece quilts were cut and tied to support the Comfort Case project for local foster children. On February 12th there will be another opportunity to support the Comfort Case project. (Contact: Jane Phillips)

Harriet Sheinson reminded FSQ guild members that there are numerous opportunities to volunteer to take out our opportunity quilt to sell tickets. Harriet has a list of guilds meetings where the quilt can be displayed to generate ticket sales. (Contact: Harriet Sheinson)

Laurie Bay introduced Victoria Findlay Wolfe, President and CEO of Bumble Beans Inc., who

gave a lecture and trunk show entitled “15 Minutes of Play – Improvisational Quilts.” Her enjoyable presentation traced her approach to modern quilting using made fabric.

After a short break, members displayed their latest accomplishments in show and tell.

The four winners of this month’s drawing for Valentine fat quarters (reds, pinks, and whites) were Cathy Berman, Liz Lawrence, Sandy Davis, and Dottie Acton.

Winners of the door prizes were Ihsia Hu, Karen Slayton, Pat Current, Anne Trudel, Susan

Entwistle, Ellen Robinson, and Nancy Zachik.

Service Project Updates Nancy Brennan and Anne Weaver

As we eagerly await spring, warmer weather and flowers, Service Projects committee members are busy making quilts for children, adults, and premature babies, as well as pillowcases for children receiving chemotherapy. Thanks to generous donations of fabric and the support of the whole guild, we are well on the way to meeting or even exceeding the numbers we have donated in past years! Thank you, FSQ!!

If you’re feeling housebound and you have some free time, please join us for our March Service Projects workshops. We’ll be at Fairhaven United Methodist Church, 12801 Darnestown Road, about ½ mile west

of Quince Orchard High School, from 9:30 a.m. until about 12:30 p.m. on these dates:

Thursday, March 6

Tuesday, March 18

Questions? Contact Nancy Brennan or Anne Weaver. We hope to see you there!

Calling all FSQ long-arm quilters: The 2015 Opportunity Quilt committee is accepting bids for quilting the Guild's raffle quilt. Bids should include all costs as well as the quilting design.

The committee will provide the batting and backing. The winning bid will be selected based on cost and design. The quilt top measures 106" x 106".

The quilt top will be on display at the April FSQ Guild meeting. There is also a graphic of the quilt on the website. Bids are due to Pat Vasaio by April 18. The Opportunity Quilt committee will make a selection by May 1, 2014 and the quilt must be returned by July 1, 2014.

FSQ members have only the month of March and the beginning of April to take the quilt out and raise needed money.

The quilt is scheduled to go out the beginning of March and the beginning of April. The winning ticket will be drawn on April 8...which does not leave us much time to sell tickets.

Please put your thinking caps on, figure out where you would like to take the quilt, let me know and I will deliver the quilt to you. If you have raffle tickets that you have sold or wish to purchase, please bring them to the April meeting.

Please help us to help the Guild.

Thanks.

Her quilts have appeared in Fabric Trends, Love of Quilting and British Patchwork and Quilting magazines and in Jennifer Chiaverieni’s book, Return to Elm Creek. Go to her web site www.plumtreequilts.com to preview her quilts.

As there will be no Guild Show this year, this should not stop you from finishing that quilt! This year is a great time to enter your quilt(s) in the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, even if you have never done so before.

The first step is to find out when the Fair is – August 8 – 16, 2014. Now that you know, do what I do, leave yourself notes around your quilting area. “Don’t forget the Fair – early August” and “Put the Fair quilts HERE” are my favorites. Also make a note of when the Fair is on your calendar, daily calendar and any electronic calendars you may have, leaving notes on the Fair every few weeks. You don’t want to wake up the morning of Fair Entry Day with nothing ready to exhibit!

The next step is to go to the Fair website and find out the various categories for quilts. The Fair website is http://www.mcagfair.com/. Once there, click on the “Exhibitor Info” button, then on the “Fair Catalog” option. This will give you the 2013 catalog – for now. Later in the year the 2014 catalog will be there. However, the 2013 catalog is useful in that it will give you an idea of what can be entered. If you do not have internet access at home, you could try the library or find someone in the Guild with access to help out. You could try calling the Fair office to see if they still mail the catalog.

Scroll down to the “Home Arts Dept.” and click

on that. This first page of the Home Arts will give you important information – when to bring the entries and when to pick them up. Mark this in your calendar! Next, scroll down the department list and decide which department you want to enter items in. Besides quilting, there are other arts, such as crocheting or cooking.

Since you want to enter quilts, scroll down to Dept. 44 – Quilts. The first section will give you the info on entering the show. One thing not mentioned in the rules is that only one item can be entered per category in each department. For example, you can enter a large appliqué and a crazy quilt and a log cabin in Division 1, but not two crazy quilts or two log cabins in that Division.

Next, scroll down the Divisions in the Quilts Dept. and note how they are described. Then look at the categories within the divisions – this is where you will decide what to enter where. These categories will also give you ideas on what quilts to make. Maybe you’ve always wanted to make a quilt for Columbus Day. If you make one, you can enter it in the Other category in various sizes. Make notes on what divisions and categories you could enter quilts in.

Having done the research, go off and quilt until mid-July. What to do then will be in article Part Two — coming soon!

So You Want To Enter Your Quilts In The County Fair – Part One Nicki Lynch

In an attempt to provide members information about the Guild’s financial status, I’m providing the chart below. The chart identifies the Guild’s Projected Income/Cash Inflows and Expenditures/Cash Outflows for the remainder of the Guild year. For ease of discussion when I say “true expenses,” these are activities that are supported by your membership dues and any other income gathering activities the Guild plans in the year. Normally, the only annual activity we plan that provides funding for Guild activities is the Opportunity Quilt. During a

Quilt Show year, the Guild may collect additional income but, since we have moved to a biennial Quilt Show, we can’t depend on the approximately $1,000 we earn from the Quilt Show. In addition, there are many variables that can impact how much the Guild earns from the Quilt Show.

The chart does not show “related expenses” for activities such as Retreats, Bus Trips, and Workshops which pay for themselves by direct collections from participants; the Guild does not normally fund these activities from its main cash reserves.

FSQ Fiscal Status and Need for Additional Income Karen Moss

The Quiltline—March 2014

Page 6

As you can see from the chart, we continue to dip into the bank reserves to cover the Guild’s “true expenses” each year. If we continue this pattern, our resources will dwindle. Reduction in membership is one key factor that has decreased our yearly income. Keep in mind, there are sometimes onetime expenses, i.e. meetings, equipment purchases, etc. that may come up in any given year.

We will have a 15 minute discussion during the business portion of our March meeting. One recommendation of the Board is to increase

membership dues. We are also trying out the yard sale this year. The Executive Board is looking for any other suggestions or ideas to increase income so that we can continue to fulfill our mission and keep the Guild’s main activities alive. Please bring any questions to the meeting and we’ll do our best to provide answers.
