Course Introduction Microcellular injection molding (also known as patented commercial process MuCell ® ) is a process in which supercritical fluid (SCF) (N 2 or CO 2 ) is injected into the machine barrel. Then SCF and molten polymer are mixed during the plasticizing and become a uniform single-phase fluid. Microcellular foams appear from the mixture of SCF and polymer melt during the injection phase as the instability of thermodynamic states caused by sudden pressure drop. Molten polymers containing cells are shaped in the mold cavities and the desired molded products with micro scale cells are obtained. This process is without the packing stage in the regular injection molding process so that the cycle time is reduced. In addition, foaming process improves the dimensional stability and reduces the shrinkage and warpage problem on the molded part. Other benefits from this process include environmental friendliness, material /energy saving, lightweight and recyclable plastic products and so on. Course Content

Although microcellular injection molding has so many advantages, the control of SCF andphysics of gas dissolved into molten polymer makes this technique very complex. How to

Participants• Business owners and managers

• Product/manufacturing engineer

• Mold maker and product designer

• Polymer processing engineer

• Plastics suppliers

• Persons who is interested in plastic manufacturing

effectively control and optimize the processingconditions are extremely important. Based on this, the course introduces the short history ofmicrocellular injection molding technique. Then theapplications in the market and the latestdevelopments of this technique are discussed. Finally, the CAE technology is introduced as apowerful tool in solving the complicated problem ina simple sense. The practical case studies arediscussed to investigate the cell size and celldistribution of the micro-foam molded product.
