Work underway on dangerous intersections by Kent Caddick

Remedial work has already been undertaken on some of the most dangerous intersections in Selwyn which were highlighted in a recent New Zealand Transport Authority report.

The report listed four Selwyn intersections in its top 100 most dangerous intersections across the country.

They were the intersections at: State Highway 1 and Aylesbury Road, SH1 and Dawsons Rd, Shands Rd

and Blakes Rd and Jones Rd and Curraghs Rd, while the intersection at Shands Rd and Marshs Rd was also listed, but falls in the Christchurch City Council boundary.

The crash data used by NZTA to compile the list was from the 2003-2012

period. Both Shands Rd intersections recorded 14 accidents with each having one fatality over the 10-year period. The Marshs Rd intersection had four serious crashes and Blakes Rd three, the rest were minor.

The Friends of the School, parents, students and volunteers from the community raised funds and volunteered time and equipment to ensure the project went ahead.

p Two classes at Rolleston Primary School Gallery were disappointed when denied their field trips to Selwyn Huts and Chamberlain’s Ford recently due to bad weather. However, with the support of their teachers the pupils did get to put their skills to work when they were given some sports gear to build a temporary shelter.

Online record toassist family research by Kent Caddick

Researching family history in Selwyn has become a little easier with the launch of a new online cemeteries database.

The database on the Selwyn District Council’s website has been six years in the making and is now able to be accessed by Selwyn residents.

Selwyn records team leader Robyn Mills said the database acts as an electronic record for cemeteries in the district and will digitally preserve Selwyn’s history.

“Council burial registers can hold valuable information for family history research, and although there are thousands of headstones in the district, most of them have never been documented in an easily accessible place,” Miss Mills said.

The database is up to date with records from more than 10,000 individuals from the 19 public cemeteries in Selwyn district, including information about their burial site and dates.

Miss Mills said council staff have been working to provide a comprehensive

Youth funds available for councilsSelwyn MP Amy Adams is encouraging local councils to get their applications in to the Ministry of Youth Development in order to secure funding from the Youth Development Partnership Fund.

Ms Adams said there was a total of $889,000 for allocation, with between $10,000 and $70,000 available per project.

“The point of this fund is to give young people aged 12 to 24 the opportunity to start projects that are meaningful to them and their communities,” said Ms Adams.

“With over 800,000 12 to 24 year olds in New Zealand, it is vital that

we support our young people and celebrate the great things many of them are doing. This fund facilitates young people’s active contribution to decision-making while helping to develop their leadership skills.”

Applications to the Youth Development Partnership Fund close at midday on Friday, April 4. More information is available at www.myd.govt.nz. ¢

NZTA is responsible for any improvements to intersections along the state highway while the Selwyn District Council has responsibility for the Shands Rd and Blakes Rd and Jones Rd and Curraghs Rd intersections.

SDC’s transportation asset engineer Mark Chamberlain said the Shands Rd and Blakes Rd intersection had improvements done in 2004 with splitter islands, quadrant kerbs and right turn bays.

“Last year we reduced the speed limit to 80kmh along this section of Shands Rd,” he said.

Mr Chamberlain said Jones Rd and Curraghs Rd intersection will be changed as part of the Southern Motorway extension project which has been set down for the 2015-16 financial year.

“The roading environment will change in the immediate vicinity with the construction of the proposed underpass as part of Stage 2 of the Southern Motorway extension connecting Robinsons Rd and Curraghs Rd.

“The current situation is expected to improve then. It will be monitored to see how it performs after these changes are made.”

Health warning lifted for Selwyn RiverThe Canterbury District Health Board has lifted its algal bloom health warnings for Whitecliffs and Glentunnel on the Selwyn River which had been issued in January and February respectively.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said recent surveys of the river at Whitecliffs and Glentunnel have shown the quantity of potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) in the river has decreased and concentrations are now below the levels that are of concern to public health. “Environment Canterbury’s sampling for the summer season

has now stopped and therefore the public will need to be aware of the potential for algal blooms themselves,” Dr Humphrey said.

“The growth of blooms is however unlikely because of the cooler weather and the seasonal nature of the blooms. “Environment Canterbury will resume sampling again next summer when there is an increased likelihood of cyanobacterial growth.” ¢

Mobile library keeps rolling alongShe has been behind the wheel for over 12 years and by now Selwyn’s mobile librarian Anita Sears knows the district’s roads like the back of her hand.

The Mobile Library Service has been running since 2001 and Anita has been driving the bus from the beginning — for the first eight years with her faithful dog Barney.

She says that although it was a lengthy process to set up the service, it has all been worth it for the community.

“Running the mobile library is a great job as I meet new people, instil a love of libraries and reading in all the local schools and pre-schools.

“I get to know my customers really well — some have become personal friends. They trust me to choose their books for them and I trust them to bring them back.”

The mobile library bus makes over 600 stops in rural communities and local schools and pre-schools a year, travelling around 20,000km in total. The

Concert to help typhoon victims by Kent Caddick

A variety concert in Lincoln this Sunday featuring the New Zealand Army Band and a Filipino dance group will help to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan which hit the Philippines killing over 6,000 people.

Lincoln University’s international student advisor Denise Pelvin said the idea for the concert came about following a discussion she had with the president of the Lincoln University International Club, Ace Padua, who had attended a concert in Ashburton which had raised funds for the typhoon victims.

“Ace said that she would like to do something similar here at Lincoln, but was not sure how to go about organising the performers for a concert.

“I have been able to help Ace with that and we have a good line up of accomplished Canterbury musicians, singers, and to recognise the people we are doing the fundraising for, we have a children’s Filipino dance group who will perform a medley of traditional dance.”

Some of the money raised will go to help villagers in the small coastal town of Tanauan replace their small fishing fleet which was wiped out inthe typhoon.

The village is near the city of Tacloban which bore the brunt of the typhoon which struck last November.

While Anita is confident behind the wheel today, it hasn’t always been a smooth journey.

“When I first started driving I got lost a couple of times and had some adventures, but now I know the back roads pretty well,” she says.

“A few years ago when we were doing the Arthurs Pass route we had a tyre blowout. This was a bit scary but some helpful people gave us a hand and we were back on the road in no time.”

Anita says that through the earthquakes and other emergencies like the winds last September she has developed a strong connection with the people who regularly use the service. ¢

Learning the art of brassThe Brass Factory Canterbury in Christchurch provides individual and ensemble tuition to musicians of all ages and all levels of ability.

Free microchipping service proving popular by Kent Caddick

More and more Selwyn residents are taking advantage of a free dog microchipping service being provided by the Selwyn District Council.

Overall almost 400 dogs have been microchipped since July last year — compared with 282 from July 2012 to March 2013.

A microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, acts as a digital identification tag and is inserted into the scruff of a dog’s neck.

Around a dozen dog owners had their puppy or dog microchipped by SDC’s animal control team at a free clinic in Rolleston recently.

“We have had a fantastic turnout to the microchipping sessions around the area lately,” council’s animal control team leader Steve Clarke said.

“It’s great to be out in the community meeting dog owners.”

Paul Neilan of West Melton and his puppy Cocoa were among some of the local residents who attended the free microchipping clinic.

“We used to get our dogs microchipped at the vets but now it is so much easier with this free service,” Mr Neilan said.

“It’s practically painless for the puppy and it means I have peace of mind knowing we have a better chance of finding her if she goes missing.”

Mr Clarke said the microchip will help to trace a dog if it becomes lost, stolen, abandoned, stray or is injured.

“Just last week an older dog in Prebbleton named Seeker had wandered out the gate after a visitor hadn’t shut the house gate properly.

“We picked her up, ran the scanner across her and reunited her with the owner within a few minutes.”

By law most dogs need to be microchipped within two months of being registered. The only exceptions to this are working dogs and any dog first registered prior to July 1, 2006 in New Zealand.

Awards for power to flowers by Belinda Cullen-Reid

A Selwyn family’s nursery business has won three awards for their eco-friendly farming practices at the recent the Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

A combination of innovative thinking and the use of efficient energy and chemicals practices saw K&L Nurseries win the Massey University Innovation Award, Hills Laboratories Harvest Award and the Meridian Energy Excellence Award.

“We thought it would be nice to win one award, but then we won three,” Michelle Kempthorne of K&L Nurseries said.

It is the first time K&L Nurseries have entered the awards, and they did so on the encouragement of their bank manager.

K&L Nurseries is a real family affair with Michelle and her husband

Ian Kempthorne in partnership with Michelle’s parents Paul and Lyn Loader.

The nursery is situated on 13 hectares in Springston South. Four generations live on the property, with Paul and Lyn in one house, Ian and Michelle and their four children in another, and Paul’s mother in a third dwelling.

Paul and Lyn bought the property in 1992 and at first ran dairy cows and

calves. In 1997 it was decided that a change was required. Two small glasshouses were erected and in 2002 the company was formed. The business has built up slowly over the next 14 years and now has 8000 square metres of glasshouses.

“There wasn’t a good supply of flowers available for florist shops,” Paul explains. “I always wanted to grow flowers. I had a grandfather who had glasshouses.”

Paul and Lyn’s younger daughter Andrea is a florist and together they opened Andrea’s Florist in Avonhead Mall. In those days 80 percent of their production went to Andrea’s, now only two percent goes there with the rest going to the Christchurch Flower auction and wholesalers all over the South Island.

They hire eight full time staff, and four part-timers and now produce around 20% of the gerberas and around 4% of the roses sold in New Zealand each year. There are plans to extend the glasshouses.

K&L Nurseries focus on growing just two types of flower, roses and gerberas.

“Gerberas are a nice flower with plenty of colour, and roses are the biggest selling flower in the world,” Ian said.

They sell their products to wholesalers, florists and supermarkets.

“You need to ask where your flowers are coming from. We need to educate people that New Zealand made is the best,” she said.

The 2006 ETS tax on coal was a turning point for the company, which decided to change to a greener form of heating for their glasshouses. Last year a new Polytechnik biomass boiler was imported from Austria and is the first of its kind in Australasia.

“Our biggest cost in the nursery was heating,” Ian said.

“We needed to upgrade the boiler. We thought, we could upgrade or try something new.

“We got rid of the old coal boiler which worked at 60% efficiency and

replaced it with the wood boiler which is guaranteed at 90% efficiency and often works over that.”

The boiler can burn waste residue from the growing operation, including old blooms and the coconut husk used for growing the plants in. There are no

“The Austrians have been building wood boilers for many years with lots of research and development,” Paul said.

It is hoped that the boiler will have paid for itself in just five years. The long term aim is to not only heat the glasshouses, but also the houses on the property. ¢

They also sell from the gate and have recently set up a website. Exportation of flowers overseas is not an option being looked at due to the sheer scale of numbers required.

Old farm machinery gets new life by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Abandoned and unused since the 1970s and destined for the scrap heap, a long forgotten engineering treasure has been lovingly bought back to life by retired steam marine engineer Peter Boyes of Darfield.

The 1903 Garrett steam portable engine was lying idle and was in a dilapidated condition when Peter, with the support and fundraising efforts of the Canterbury Steam Preservation Society, took on the task of bringing the old girl back to life.

“I decided that I’d had enough of seeing portable steam engines lying about that no one was interested in restoring. So I took on the task — the Garrett was to be restored.”

The first step was to get the boiler repaired which was a major task. It was sent into Scots Engineering in Christchurch. Once back in Peter’s workshop he continued the restoration.

“All the missing links had to be found as this is essential to steam restoration, as some parts aren’t easily made.”

Peter is a qualified Steam Marine Engineer and worked on the TSS Earnslaw for 16 years. It took him two years to restore the steam engine, with Peter estimating a total of 384 hours of labour going into the project.

“The end result was water in the boiler, a box of matches and an engine

ticking over like a Swiss clock.” The steam portable was the first type of steam engine to be used around farms in Britain and was used to drive threshing equipment and operate sawmills. This particular steam portable was one of

ten Garretts to be imported to New Zealand in 1903.

The transportation of this ten-and-a-half tonne piece of machinery to New Zealand via sea would have been a feat of some note. The boiler alone

weighed eight tonnes and all parts would have been removed, packed in grease, wrapped in sacking and crated in a number of wooden boxes.

For many years this particular steam engine was used to drive flax mill

machinery, and later a steam saw mill, in the Kaikoura area. Peter reports that technically the steam portable provides 12 nominal horse power via a single cylinder and piston mounted on top of a boiler to a large flywheel. The flywheel

is also mounted on top of and alongside the boiler.

The steam portable is an exhibit at the Steam Scene display at McLeans Island on the weekend of April 12 and 13. ¢

Choosing the right tablet for you by Belinda Cullen-Reid

The use of tablets for personal and business computing has certainly taken off with a 4.5 percent growth in tablet shipments worldwide in 2013, and an 8.4 percent decline in PC shipments.

Last Christmas I purchased a pretty basic tablet for my mother, who felt the computer world had left her behind. As she had limited technological knowledge I wanted to find her something basic and

user friendly. I decided to buy her an Android tablet. She already had a basic Android phone, so I wanted to capitalise on the transfer of knowledge.

After a couple of frustration filled months Mum has mastered the basics and is really enjoying being able to

access information from the internet and converse with her friends online.

Now her friends are showing an interest in purchasing tablets and are asking advice on what to purchase.

So how do you decide what tablet is right for you?

The first question to ask is what is it needed for? If all you want to do is check your email, browse the internet and stream content from the internet then just about any tablet can do that.

If your list of activities is more adventurous then you’ll need to consider what is the best operating system for your needs? When deciding between operating systems the most commonly used are Android, Windows and Apple iOS.

If creating and manipulating documents is something you will need to do a lot, you may favour a Windows operating system, especially if you like Microsoft Word and use it on your desktop or laptop computer. With other operating systems you can get apps that convert files but this of course adds an extra step.

For those interested in gaming and creative media pursuits the iPad is the favourite. With its high screen

resolution and processing speed it has an enthusiastic following. The size of storage, camera and video capabilities, screen size and resolution, even weight and durability all need to be considered and again come down to needs. Do you require superior graphics for playing games or watching movies? Will you use your tablet as the main way to take photos and videos? If so you’ll want one with a very good camera.

Of course the most extenuating factor will be price. So while you may dream big when it comes to your technological desires, the purchasing reality might be considerably different.

The best thing to do is to arm yourself with knowledge and a realistic budget and go try some tablets out. At the end of the day personal preference goes a long way, and what is one person’s gadget garbage is another’s techy treasure. ¢

We’ve been getting a lovely lot of beautiful autumn days as of late, so it’s important to remember to keep up the water, especially to young or newly repositioned plants.

Autumn is a great time to plant new lawn or do some maintenance on the old one. It’s also the time for harvesting seeds from plants. Store these in labelled containers for planting later and you can save yourself a bundle.Plant

Broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers, celery, coriander, lettuces, parsley, radishes, rosemary, spinach, spring onions, silverbeet.

Don’t forget to pot up your strawberry plants ready for replanting in the winter.Harvest

Apples, beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, capsicum, carrots, cauliflowers, corn, courgettes, cucumbers, grapes, lettuces, pears, peas, potatoes and tomatoes.

Maintenance • Prune your fruit trees once they have finished providing fruit. Remove unhealthy looking branches

• Stake and tie up climbing plants, such are runner beans

• Pull out corn and tomato plants once you have harvested. These can be added to the compost heap.

• Replenish your soil from the nutrients sucked up by your summer crops. Now’s the time to

add nutrient dense compost and manure. You can rest sections of your garden also, and replenish them by growing a nitrogen rich crop such as mustard seed, which can be grown through the winter and mulched back into the soil before flowering. Lupins can be used in the same way.Enjoy your autumn days and take time

to sit back on a deck chair and reflect on the joys of your hard work. ¢
