Coalgate author’s first fiction forayu by Kent Caddick

A long-held desire to write a children’s book has been fulfilled by Coalgate’s Anna Dalzell.

Coalgate’s Anna Dalzell has published her first book Kiwi’s Intrepid Journey which helps young children deal with anxiety.

She will this month release her first book, Kiwi’s Intrepid Journey, which has been illustrated by close friend Jane McIntosh of Culverden.

Anna, a mother of three grown children, said she first became interested in writing for children when her own were young.

“I took a correspondence course on writing when they were younger but have never really had the opportunity until now,” she said.

Anna, and her husband Anthony Dalzell, moved to Coalgate two years ago where they run a 500ha sheep, beef and cropping farm, after previously farming in the North Canterbury area.

Anna, a former primary school teacher, is qualified in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and until 15 months ago had been working with Anxiety Support to help people overcome their anxiety disorders.

“I left to start my own practice and that has also given me the time to turn my attention back to writing,” Anna said.

“I wanted to create a book which not only tells a story but will also help children to deal with a lot of the emotions and feelings which make them anxious.

“I chose the Kiwi as the principal character as like many children he is shy and anxious about the world and have built in some NLP concepts in helping to get children to put things in to perspective, helping them to deal with their feelings and how it can impact on their behaviour.”

As well as entertaining the children Anna hopes the book will also aid parents, teachers and therapists help children who are going through difficult times.

“The book is aimed at children aged between five and eight years as that is a time when they are starting to become more independent with sleep-overs and nights away from home on school camps. It can be an anxious age for some children.” Anna hopes the book will also help some children deal with the stress left by the Canterbury earthquakes.

“Some of these children may not actually remember the earthquakes themselves but have been growing up in an environment where they have had to keep shifting around

because of housing and are seeing people like Mum and Dad wound up dealing with earthquake issues.”

Anna’s book Kiwi’s Intrepid Journey will be launched on April 22 and will be available at some book stores, the Darfield Post Shop and can be purchased by emailing Anna - [email protected]

Post-quake resilience

NEWS briefsA Lincoln University graduate has

won a nationwide landscape design award for her project which focussed on increasing post-earthquake resilience in flood-prone Avonside in Christchurch.

Nicki Copley’s project, Living with Uncertainty: A Design Investigation into Adaptive Living in the Residential Red Zone, received the Student Design Award from the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) recently.

Ms Copley, who graduated last year with a Master of Landscape Architecture, says her design work suggests potential strategies for increasing a community’s ability to adapt to flood risk.

“Theory suggests the residential red zone could be an ideal place to test experimental land uses. I spent nearly a month investigating the Avonside site conditions – past, present and predicted future.”

One of Ms Copley’s strategies involves reconceptualising roads as urban waterways.

“As roads are often the first to flood, the needs of water can be designed for first and then we can work out how people might use them,” she said.

“Roads might become canals, floating bridges or be narrowed with bordering

Apprentices wantedSelwyn carpentry apprentices are

being urged to show off their skills and talent in the Registered Master Builders 2015 Apprentice of the Year competition.

Entries for the competition are now open, with a share of more than $100,000 in prizes up for grabs, as well as the coveted title of 2015 Apprentice of the Year.

Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly said the competition is an excellent opportunity to showcase the calibre of apprentices in the carpentry industry.“Apprentice of the Year is a great opportunity for apprentices. Taking part and perhaps winning a place in the competition really does set them up for rewarding careers, and it is a great way for them to meet others in the industry,” he said.

“With a record number of apprentices signing up to the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) last year and an upswing of competition entries, we’re anticipating higher numbers again and some strong contenders for the title of Apprentice of the Year.”

Last year’s winner Tom Southen said taking part in the competition has helped him to plan out his future, and was a fantastic chance to meet other apprentices at a similar stage in their career along the way.

swales. They would be designed to suit the hydrological conditions of each site.”

In their citation, the judges say Ms Copley’s project is “an excellent illustration of a partnership connecting topographical landscapes with the community via social capital that would enrich the community’s flexibility in times of need”.

“Entering the competition gave me the opportunity to see how I ranked against my peers,” he said.

“My advice to other apprentices starting off is to jump on every opportunity you’re offered. The competition is a great opportunity to test yourself and learn about your ability to cope under pressure.”

Carpentry apprentices can enter the competition online at www.apprenticeoftheyear.co.nz, with entries closing on June 11.

The New Zealand Transport Agency will lower the speed limit on State Highway 73 through Springfield at the end of this month.

NZTA highway manager Colin Knaggs said there has been significant development in the town during the last few years which means the existing 70kmh speed limit on the highway is no longer appropriate.

“A new 50kmh speed limit will be introduced from Thursday, April 23 with the 50kmh limit beginning 180m south-east of Tramway Road and running through to 265m north-west of Pall Mall Street.”

Mr Knaggs said the change was

u by Kent Caddick

Springfield residents are celebrating the lower of the speed limit through the Selwyn township.

Jody competes for the Selwyn Athletics Club (SAC), which is based at Brookside Park in Rolleston, and recently came away with a big haul of trophies at the club’s end of season awards night.

The West Melton Primary School pupil took home the CL Group Cup as the club’s intermediate girls’ champion, the Rachel Simons Excellence Award for overall excellence and a gold medal for being the top seven-year-old girl in the club.

Jody competed at the CCAA Champs in Timaru in early March, where she finished first-equal in her age group in Canterbury, recording wins in the discus and long jump disciplines.

Because of this, she was selected for the Canterbury team to take on Tasman in Nelson in late March.

Jody finished first in the discus in her age group and in the process broke a five-year-old Canterbury record with a throw of 16.74m. She was also first in the 60m sprint and the long jump, where her leap of 3.48m was a personal best.

Jody said she was surprised when she was announced the winner of the two club cups.

“I felt really proud of my achievements and it was really cool to get the cups,” she said.

“I want to improve on what I did this year and to get selected again for the Canterbury team and go to the South Island Colgate Games in Nelson.”

Jody said Olympic and world champion Valerie Adams is one of her sporting heroes.

“I like watching her on television, she does a really good job and she is a Kiwi.”

Perhaps not surprisingly then discus is one of her favourite events.

“I like throwing the discus, especially doing the spin and throwing really hard at the end. I also like running the 200m over the 100m, because I feel I get more time to speed up towards the finish line.”

President of the Selwyn Athletics Club Gail Krsinic said Jody is one of their most dedicated members.

“Jody has pretty much been a member of the club since we started two years ago,” Gail said.

“She is very determined and focussed. She really listens to her coaches and is very good at training.”

strongly supported by stakeholders and the township committee to help improve safety through the rural township.

Malvern Ward district councillor Sam Broughton said locals will be pleased with the change.

“It is something local residents have been asking about for a long time and it’s great that the NZTA has also recognised that change was needed.”

The Alpine Highway is a busy stretch of road and this will help to keep both locals and motorists a lot more safe.

Cr Broughton said council is currently reviewing a number of speed limits on roads around the district which they look after including through Hororata.

The bus tour, which started at 6am and finished at 10pm, took the group from Taumutu in Selwyn to Lake Heron in the Southern Alps and kicked off the second-year landscape design students’ first professional year of study.

organised the trip, said the aim of the tour was to introduce students to particular aspects of the New Zealand landscape.

“These places may or may not have been familiar to them, but we wanted them to consider the landscapes with new senses – those of landscape

architects.” School of Landscape Architecture senior lecturer Dr Wendy McWilliam said the sites formed the basis for the students to practise their inventory and analysis skills.

“They were also able to explore the concept of ‘place’, develop their own sensitivities to the special qualities and character of different places, and begin to investigate their design responses to the landscape.”

Dr McWilliam said activities included recognising cultural heritage in the Methven landscape, sketching a section of some of the key resources at Timber Yard Point, drawing wildlife and their habitats at the Rakaia River, making a

sketch of the Hakatere Station layout and listing the resources required to process food at the Hakatere Conservation Park.

The students were also asked to be attuned to their connections with nature and their surroundings.

Maori Studies lecturer Lloyd Carpenter, a guest speaker on the trip, says he spoke about the importance of Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora and Maori Lakes – O Tu Wharekai as food resources.

“The kaitiakitanga, or stewardship, of the resources and their environment was critical to both the health of the resources and therefore the health of the people,” Carpenter said.

Iconic rural broadcaster Rob Cope-Williams is joining forces with New Zealand’s leading producer of online video, Tandem Studios, to create a new farming show, On the Land.

Cope-Williams is one of New Zealand’s longest serving television hosts having presented Rob’s Country on CTV for more than 20 years.

“Over the past few years farmers have told me they want 24/7 access to news and information,” Cope-Williams said.

“How they want to view this is changing. They want to be able to access to able to source content on their smart phones, computers or tablets when they have time, but still want to be able to sit down and enjoy a one-hour show.”

On the Land will allow farmers to have 24/7 access to the show via its website, YouTube channel, Facebook page and podcasts. Produced in Christchurch, On the Land will also be seen by a national audience through FACE TV and Channel 83 on Sky TV every Sunday night at 8pm.

Tandem Studios managing director, Dave Dunlay, said the show will have a great impact on the South Island’s rural community with local content screening to a national television audience.

“On the Land is our first programme made specifically for multiple platforms, combining digital media with a national television audience,” Dunlay said.

On the Land Producer Dave Dunlay, host Rob Cope-Williams and account manager Jayne Munro

“We will be able to meet the needs of farmers by keeping them up to date with quality video information at a time that is convenient for them.”

He said the advent of more digital platforms means now more than ever content is king.

“As we are seeing with the arrival of Netflix, Lightbox and a myriad of other

on-demand services, the channel is not important. Easy access to quality content is what matters.

“A key feature of On the Land will be the archiving of material, making it easy for farmers to focus on specific areas of interest.

“The content will be edited into small segments and will be easily searchable,

with viewers able to share content via their own organisation’s website and social media channels.”

Dunlay said On the Land is part of the vanguard of the new world of media.

“Everybody, including farmers, is becoming used to consuming content online. What was previously a fringe area of media is now becoming mainstream.”

The retired Banks Peninsula sheep and beef farmer was confirmed as the President for the 2015 Canterbury A&P Show at the associations recent AGM.

“It’s an honour to be President and to be adding another rung to the ladder of this historic Show as the first woman President of the Association,” Mrs Hutchinson said.

“I feel very humbled to have my name listed alongside the great names of previous men who had a vision for the show so many years ago and the more recent presidents that have helped the Show become such a success” said.

Mrs Hutchinson’s involvement with the Canterbury A&P Show began in the early 1960s when she first competed in the equestrian section.

Making the journey from Rakaia Gorge’s Double Hill Station to Christchurch, wasn’t an easy one but it was one that paid off over the years. Mrs Hutchinson won many awards through the 1960s and 1970s including the prestigious Bethell Challenge Salver, New Zealand Hack of the Year and Lady’s Hack of the Year Championship.

As well as competing, Mrs Hutchinson has invested a lot of time volunteering for the association in many different roles including judge, steward, horse committee chairperson, general committee member and as the first woman Ringmaster. She is also involved

Canterbury A&P Association’s first female President

with the Royal Agricultural Society as the National Judges Convenor and the Little River A&P Show as a past President.

Mrs Hutchinson’s tenure as president follows in the footsteps of her Uncle Jimmy Ensor who was president in 1973 and it’s those sorts of family connections that she cherishes.

“The Canterbury A&P Show operates like a very large family and it’s wonderful to see the number of younger family members and their friends who are also becoming involved in the association along with their parents. I have immensely enjoyed seeing my children

and grandchildren become involved in A&P Shows too.”

Mrs Hutchinson believes young people are the future of the A&P Show and stressed the importance of encouraging and supporting their participation.

She said that showing and volunteering presents many career and personal development opportunities for youth.

“The best way to learn about working as a team is to be part of  one and to be  working alongside  so many knowledgeable stockmen and women is a great way for youth to learn about

showing and stockmanship as well as recognising excellence in the breeding and presentation of stock.”

The 2015 Canterbury A&P Show will be held from November 11 to 13 at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch.

A newly published paper detailing the results of field trials, shows the use of a mesh cover over the plants was very effective in controlling tomato potato psyllid, or TPP, as well as reducing potato blight.

One of the authors of the paper, Dr Charles Merfield of the BHU Future Farming Centre, said TPP can potentially cause severe crop loss due to phytotoxic saliva and transmission of the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter Solanacearum.

“The bacterium is believed to cause diseases such as ‘psyllid yellows’ in tomatoes and potatoes, and ‘zebra chip’ symptoms in potato tubers.

Research on using non-chemical methods to control potato pests is delivering ground-breaking results according to Lincoln University.

Dr Charles Merfield of the BHU Future Farming Centre

“The potential in the developed world to use mesh which is very safe, in place of chemicals, is very exciting.”

Dr Merfield said the arrival of TPP in New Zealand led to potato, tomato and pepper growers increasing their frequency of insecticide use, which disrupted integrated pest management programmes that were already in place.

“Over two growing seasons in Canterbury, potatoes growing under mesh covers were found to have much reduced numbers of TPP nymphs and adults, increased tuber size, increased overall yield and enhanced storage potential compared to uncovered plots.

“There had been no effective TPP controls for purely organic growers.”

Dr Merfield said the mesh can also control a wide range of pests on many different field crops, for example, it is already being used by organic growers to control root fly on carrots.

The mesh crop covers are made of monofilament plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, woven in a plain weave and form a barrier between insect and crop.

Non-chemical pest control promising

Mark and Devon Slee, 2014 Ballance Farm Environment winners, haven taken a five-day tour of the North Island, to meet with key industry stakeholders to promote and encourage good environmental practices.

Ambassadors on tour

New Zealand Farm Environment Trust was the driving force behind the tour which included a meeting with the Primary Production Select Committee and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.

The trip was an opportunity “to tell our story about irrigated agriculture and the benefits to our community,” Mark said.

“Some places were very dry and farmers in these areas were clearly trying to manage their operations very carefully and use whatever water they have as efficiently as possible.”

Mark believes increasing water storage and clever use of irrigation will help east coast farmers immensely.

“The efficient use of resources drives how we manage the farm. To us, farming is proving that profitability and environmental sustainability go hand in hand and that’s a key message we tried to get across.”

The Slee’s business, Melrose Dairy Limited near Ealing, milks over 2600 cows on three dairy units using the latest technology to enable efficient operation of an extensive centre-pivot irrigation system and other farm infrastructure.

Reproduced courtesy of Canterbury Farming

Dr Merfield said the mesh covers appear to be an ideal way of controlling TPP on potatoes and are preventative rather than curative like agrichemicals.

“However, there will be more work to validate the results for which funding is already in place.”

Mesh crop covers have been widely used in Europe for nearly two decades for control of a large number of pests, both insects and vertebrates on a wide range of crops.

The first thing that comes to mind with the Ranger is versatility, both in its capability and the options provided for you: 2WD and 4WD options are available with the XL, XLT options, and a higher end 4WD Wildtrak for those who are looking for a little more.

The Double Cab option provides extra leg room and comfort in the back seat, while the Super Cab is more compact still allows for easy access into the rear seats with doors opening back to 90 degrees.

Canterbury is after all, the perfect place to drive a vehicle that provides great performance on and off-road, with roads changing in the city (we’ve all experienced those road works bumps) and the country tracks around our outskirts.

Boasting a higher ground clearance and wading depth than the Toyota Hilux or Holden Colorado (237mm and 800mm respectively) you can be sure your Ranger can cope with rural roads and adventures comfortably.

Speaking of adventures - every driver wants to know that their vehicle has the safety features to keep passengers secure and comfortable - this is exactly what the Ranger has been designed to do.

Traction control and locking rear differential are there to get you up those difficult tracks safely across the gravel and dirt, while the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability

You may have heard the talk about the Ford Ranger, celebrated as New Zealand’s number one ute in 2014, but unless you have experienced it, you may wonder what all of the fuss is about.

Control (DSC) assist you in the control of your vehicle, even under load. It will automatically adjust the parameters to match both on- and off-road conditions, giving you peace of mind in any terrain.

Ford describes the Ranger as feeling ‘more like a modern SUV than a hard working ute’ in terms of its comfort and connectivity technology - no longer do you have to make the distinction between the ‘work truck’ and the runaround vehicle. ‘

The Ranger is equipped with iPod/Bluetooth compatibility, and voice activation technology to control your phone or music as you drive, keeping your hands on the wheel the whole time.

With class-leading legroom in the back of the double cab model, and more than 20 storage spaces inside the vehicle, your journey will be more comfortable for everyone involved, not just the driver!

To test drive a new Ranger drop into Avon City Ford at the Sockburn roundabout in Christchurch.

The feijoa season extends through till June and by then, if we haven’t had our fill of feijoa smoothies, feijoa crumble, and feijoa muffins, we can preserve what’s left in chutney or jam, or bag them up for the freezer (feijoas freeze well, with or without their skin).

Since this small South American tree arrived in New Zealand in the 1920s, it’s thrived and prospered in what turned out to be an ideal climate. As well, feijoa pests are scarce here, which means feijoas are grown organically, without chemical sprays.

Our warmest summer temperatures generate huge crops of large fruit, while a decent winter chill gives the best fruit set. Although feijoas are more common in North Island gardens, they’re increasingly grown in the South, as early fruiting varieties are increasingly available. Feijoa fruit is damaged by frost, but the tree itself is frost hardy down to minus 8°C.

Feijoas for everyoneArticle supplied by www.gogardening.co.nz

Throughout Autumn we’ll be gathering up the pretty green feijoa fruit and scooping out their exquisite aromatic flesh.

Written by NGINZ. For more Go Gardening advice, guides and inspiration please go to www.gogardening.co.nz and visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com./gogardeningnz.

Feijoa ‘Kaiteri’ is a very early ripening variety, ideal for both cool and warm climates. It has very large (300g) fruit.

Others to ripen early in the season are ‘Pounamu’, which has dark greenstone coloured skin; ‘Apollo’, a large partially self-fertile variety; and ‘Unique’, a popular self-fertile variey well known for its fast, prolific crops.

Most feijoas benefit greatly from cross-pollination, so unless your neighbour has a feijoa tree, it’s advisable to plant a pair. Although they flower at the same time, different varieties have different harvest times. Planting two or three different varieties means you will have fruit over a longer season.

Mid-season varieties include ‘Kakapo’ and ‘Wiki Tu’, a dwarf tree with huge meaty fruit which keeps well. The later ripening varieties include ‘Triumph’ and ‘Opal Star’, a dark skinned variety with a delicious rich flavour and a smooth, non-gritty texture.

How to grow feijoas

• Choose a variety that is right for your climate. Planting two or more varieties is recommended as most feijoas are not self-fertile, and even self-fertile varieties fruit more prolifically when grown near a pollinator.

• Plant in a warm sunny location with well-drained soil.

• Feed with balanced NPK fertiliser in spring and summer.

• Water young trees during dry summer weather. Well-established trees have excellent drought tolerance.

• Protect from wind and frost, especially while trees are young. When grown in pots, trees may be moved to warmer spot for the cold season.

• Prune in spring. Pruning, while not essential, helps maintain a tidy manageable size and lets light and pollinators into the tree while stimulating the tree to produce more fruiting wood. However, it is important to prune at the right time. Fruit forms at the base of new growth, so prune early in spring (after the risk of frosts) to allow time for growth and flowering. Without any pruning, your feijoa tree may reach 4 or 5m tall and wide.

• Pick often. ‘Touch picking’ daily is best to avoid fruit falling to the ground where it quickly begins to rot. Fruit is ripe when it comes away from the stalk cleanly and easily, when gently pulled. Fallen fruit should be eaten or preserved without delay.
