While residents will be able to water their lawns and gardens at any time of the day, the Selwyn District Council still encourages people to consider watering after 9pm and before 6am as this is the time of lowest demand for water and provides the best opportunity for water to soak into the ground, reducing the amount of water needed for irrigation.

"The restrictions have been lifted as cooler weather and shorter daylight

hours have helped reduce the demand for water," council’s water services asset manager Murray England said.

“The council would like to thank residents for their assistance in reducing water demand over this summer period.”

In the coming year new reservoirs are planned at Rolleston, West Melton and Lincoln to provide additional storage capacity, while a new well will be developed in Prebbleton.

During the month of May, members of the public, workplaces and hospitality providers are encouraged to host Pink Ribbon themed events, inviting friends, family, employees, customers and supporters to help raise funds.

The campaign also gives an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease, encourage early detection, and motivate women to be proactive in their health by having regular mammograms.

Fronting this year’s campaign is celebrity cook Chelsea Winter who is encouraging New Zealanders to host their own Pink Ribbon Breakfast.

“Getting friends and family together over a meal is what we Kiwis do well, and a perfect opportunity to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. I’m very proud to support the Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign and encourage everyone to get together this May and join in the fun,” Chelsea said.

To be involved just visit www.pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz to register.

There’s still time for Selwyn residents to register and host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast campaign event to support breast cancer research.

Mr MacLachlan, along with Mobico teammates Richard Dove, Karen Muller and Hedley Wilton took part in the GODZone Adventure Race around the top half of the South Island earlier this month.

He decided to take part in the race to raise funds for Heart Kids following the support the group gave him and his wife Susan after their 18 month old son Mitchell required open-heart surgery to repair a heart condition.

Mr MacLachlan said the team had a fantastic race.

“We achieved the goals we set out with by finishing the full course and in the top half of the field in 5 days, 14 hours and 20 minutes.

“Every stage of the course was different to the previous one and really was a great adventure.

“We had an absolute blast during the race.

Adventure racer giving backby Kent Caddick

West Melton man Rupert MacLachlan is tired but satisfied after spending seven days racing 500kms non-stop to raise money for the children’s charity Heart Kids New Zealand.

“There were lots of ups and downs, and some wet weather during the first few days, but towards the end the sun finally came out and we were treated to some spectacular views, with the highlight being the sunset on the summit of Mt Owen.

“The support from family, friends and the local community was incredible, and will definitely be a lasting memory of the race for all of us. It was also great to see so many people following us via the live tracking website.”

Mr MacLachlan’s team raised over $20,000 for Hearts Kids which had hoped to raise at least $100,000 through the event.

People can still donate to the cause until the end of April by going to the Mobico Heart Kids Adventure Racing Team’s Give a Little page: www.givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/mobicoheartkidsadventureracingteam.

The closure is aimed at preserving the valued fishery which has suffered from years of environmental degradation.

The new rules will be effective from midnight April 30, and apply to all trout and salmon fishing in waterways east of SH1 within the North Canterbury Fish and Game Region which includes Selwyn.

The chairman of North Canterbury Fish & Game Trevor Isitt said the decision has the overwhelming backing of the region’s anglers.

“We had a public meeting in March to discuss this move – more than 110 people attended and gave their unanimous support.

“They understand that the fishery is under threat thanks to environmental degradation and poor water management policies and this is something constructive they can do to help protect what they love.” Mr Isitt

Degradation forces closure of Selwyn fisheriesWinter trout fishing will be closed in the lower reaches of some Selwyn rivers from the end of this month after approval from the Department of Conservation’s Director General.

said the new rules are straightforward.“No person shall attempt to fish for

or take any sports fish including salmon and trout east of, or downstream of, SH1 anywhere in the North Canterbury Fish and Game Region between May 1 and September 30.”

Following the March meeting, North Canterbury Fish & Game asked the Department of Conservation to approve the closure and DOC head Lou Sanson has used his delegated authority to do so under the Conservation Act 1987.

North Canterbury Fish & Game is now making sure all anglers know of the closure, something Trevor Isitt said was a big job.

“We’ll be running newspaper ads to alert people about what has happened and our staff will be out and about adjusting signage in the affected areas in coming days,” he said.

Selwyn rivers east of SH1 have been closed to trout fishers.

ANZAC Day Monday 25th April

This year’s event marked 101 years since the landing at Gallipoli by New Zealand and Australian forces during World War I, which sparked the Anzac spirit and led to the formation of returned services associations on both sides of the Tasman.

Selwyn mayor Kelvin Coe, who was

attending his last Anzac services before he steps down from the mayoralty in October, said the turnout across the district was great to see.

“I think overall the turnout across the district was up on previous years, there was certainly a big turnout at the dawn service in Burnham while there were

certainly more at the afternoon service in Lincoln compared to last year.

“It was particularly pleasing to see so many younger ones taking part and it shows how keen children have been to learn about our past as a country.

“Also gratifying is seeing the number of new faces at the services

as areas like West Melton have grown so fast and it is great seeing the new members of our communities taking part in these events and supporting their community.”

For Darfield glass artist Lorraine Natusch ‘feel the fear’ is a code she has lived by for many years, while for mixed media artist Georgie Youl of Leeston it reflects her feelings heading into the first public exhibition of her work.

The pair will be joined by Little River print maker and mixed media artist Ben Reid for the Malvern Community Arts Council’s May exhibition which opens this weekend.

“I think I may have had a different life if I hadn’t come across the expression ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’,” Lorraine said.

“It inspired me to take the plunge into taking my art seriously and to put it out for exhibition, which can be pretty daunting as you are putting something you love doing out there for critical appraisal and wondering whether people are going to like it.

“However, if you want to become a

Overcoming the fearby Kent Caddick

‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ is an apt expression to apply to two Selwyn artists who will feature in the next exhibition at the Selwyn Art Gallery in Darfield.

professional artist it is something you have to do.”

That is something Georgie Youl, who like Lorraine has family links to Selwyn which go back many generations, is finding out about.

While she has had work displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris and hung in Government House in Wellington Georgie admits to be a little nervous about her first public exhibition.

“While I have sold privately before this is my first real exhibition,” Georgie said.

Both women work from home, with Lorraine working out of her Great Grandfather's old Clydesdale horse stable in Darfield, which she has restored and converted into a studio, while Georgie has set up a studio in her home, the historic manse house in Leeston.

Since Lorraine ‘felt the fear and did it anyway’ in her mid-thirties she has exhibited widely and won

several awards including prizes at Darfield Artweek and the Royal Easter Show in Auckland, where her glass work began.

“I have always been creative and my mother would often say I was born with a pair of scissors in my hand as I would be always making something but it wasn’t until later in life that I started getting a formal art education “

Georgie credits her patron, another Selwyn resident Sue McKenzie, for helping to develop her creative talents.

“When I was around 15 years old Sue helped me in getting art lessons and materials and from there I started playing around.”

Her early exploration into photography has aided her in developing her mixed media style and her work, which will be on display at the Selwyn Gallery, includes a series combining painting, prints from 1900s book covers, and paper crafting and carving.

Leeston artist Georgie Youl will be publicly exhibiting her work for the first time.

Inspired by the art nouveaux style Georgie uses alternative photography techniques combined with painting and illustration, and carves the paper into organic 3D shapes, taken from thousands of leaves she has collected and photographed.

Lorraine Natusch exhibition work will feature her new ‘Cityscapes’ glass work which was inspired by architecture seen on a recent trip to Canada and New York, and vessels using a 'drop out' method, where several fused glass layers are suspended and heated, with gravity taking over.

Lorraine, who has become a regular exhibitor at the Selwyn Gallery in recent years, said the work of the Malvern Community Arts Council has been important in developing her confidence as an artist.

“The arts council has been there to both support and motivate me, and for that I am really grateful.”

Thinking of

Sub dividingyour property?

If you get it right, it will reward you for decades with home-grown fruit and nuts.Planning

It’s important to look at the conditions you have on your property before beginning planting, because it’s easier to work with the natural patterns of your land than against them. Study air flow, water flow, orientation to the sun, and where the prevailing winds and frost

by Judy McDonald

Establishing an orchard on your lifestyle block can involve a good deal of work, and sometimes money, so it’s worth doing some careful planning before taking spade to soil.

come from. A slope is a great thing to have in an

orchard, because it allows cold air to run downhill, and provides frost-free spots at the upper end.

Wet patches and very dry spots on your land are not necessarily a bad thing: you just need to put the right plants in the right places. Hazelnuts, for example, like a good sharp winter

chill, so a hollow that harbours frost is just the right place for them.

Wet areas, particularly those rich in nutrients like the far end of your septic tank leach field, are great for plums. Citrus also like high nutrients but don’t like wet feet. Dry, windy areas are ideal for trees that are prone to fungal and bacterial rots, so these areas can house nectarines, peaches and walnuts.Planting and maintenance

The layout of your orchard can be traditional rows, or something completely different. Rows can be fine, especially if you are only growing a limited range of fruit trees, but it can create large gaps between plants which may need a tractor for grass and weed control.

Consider not using a tractor in the orchard to avoid soil compaction and reliance on fossil fuels. Instead consider a food forest where planting is very mixed, and is based on the best microclimate for the species involved.

A minimum space of four to five metres between trees should be allowed, and large spreading trees like walnuts should be at least 25 metres apart.

Thinking about the mature height of each tree is also important. Tall trees need to be positioned so they don’t shade other trees.

To minimise grass and weed growth, use heavy mulching with organic material (a mixture of lawn clippings and dry leaves is good), applied during the wettest possible conditions to enhance soil moisture retention.

Plant a ‘herbal ley’ which includes plantain, red clover, chicory, yarrow etc for their nutritive value; and companion planting, for example dahlias are helpful near apple trees because they harbour earwigs, which eat codlin moth caterpillars.

The final word on the subject of grass and weeds is don’t panic. Grasses only grow to a certain height and then fall

Apples are a reliable tree to have in any orchard. Plant a variety of apples that are good to cook with and ones which are great to eat straight from the tree.

over in autumn. As long as you clear around young trees and avoid fire hazards, they won’t do much damage to your orchard.

Water conservation in the orchard is very important, especially if you don’t have a stream or bore available and are relying on rainwater.

It’s very helpful to have storage tanks located as close to the top of your slope as possible. You can also use the ancient technique of building swales which is essentially small ditches like miniature terraces which retain water

on the slope. And mulch heavily with organic matter to minimise evaporation from the soil.

Always investigate what cultivars grow well in your area before planting. For example, you may like Golden Queen peaches, but they may not do well on your property while another type of peach will thrive.

Contact your local branch of the Tree Crops Association to get information on appropriate cultivars for your area, and detailed advice on care for each type of tree.

Growing grapes can be successful in some parts of Selwyn as certain varieties like free draining stony soils.

Growing berries means an abundance of tasty treats, but only if you put nets on them to make sure the birds don’t get there first.

DIAL 111

EECA technical expert Christian Hoerning says spending a bit more upfront on a modern woodburner, Energy Star rated heat pumps or flued gas heaters work best for larger rooms you want to heat regularly – for example living areas.

For other rooms that are used infrequently a portable electric heater may work well. These heaters are cheap to buy but more expensive to run than fixed heaters.

Here’s a checklist of the pros and cons of different types of heating for your house.

Choosing the right heating EECA Energywise says you need to carefully consider how you use a room before deciding on the type of heating.

Heat PumpsGood for:• low running costs (when you use

them properly)• producing instant heat• convenience - you can control the

temperature with the thermostat and use the timer.

Be aware:• heat pumps must be sized correctly

for the space and the climate to work well - it’s important to get a reputable installer to size the area you want to heat (if you live in a colder area, ask the supplier to size the heat pump based on its low temperature performance)

• some are a lot more efficient than others - look for Energy Star qualified models for superior energy efficiency and performance in low temperatures

• they won't work during a power cut.• if you live in a corrosive

environment, e.g. near the coast or in a geothermal area, check with the supplier for warranties.

Modern woodburnersGood for:• low running costs, especially

if you have access to free or cheap firewood

• the environment - they produce very little pollution and use renewable wood energy

• heating large spaces• heating hot water in winter through a

wetback system.Be aware:• firewood must be dry to burn cleanly

and efficiently, so you need to plan ahead and store it undercover, ideally for at least 12 months

• you need a building consent to install one and - unless your property is larger than two hectares - you need to choose a woodburner on the Ministry for the Environment's l ist of approved wood burners.

Wood pellet burnersGood for:• the environment - the pellets are

made from waste products and burn cleanly

• heat control (better than a wood burner)

• heating large spaces• heating hot water in winter through

a wetback system.Be aware:• they won't work if your electricity

isn't working (they use a small amount of electricity)

• you need a building consent to install one

• only authorised burners can be used in areas with poor air quality.

• pellet prices vary across the country – check prices in your area before getting a wood pellet burner

• you cannot burn firewood, only pellets.

Flued gas (natural or LPG) heaters or fireplacesGood for: • convenience - you can control the

temperature with the thermostat and use the timer

• heating larger areas for longer periods.Be aware: • if you don’t already, you will probably

have to pay a fixed charge for reticulated gas supply

• you must have your gas heater installed by a registered gas fitter.

• some gas space heaters are a lot more efficient than others - look for ENERGY STAR®.

Article supplied by EECA Energywise. For more on heating and power saving tips go to www.energywise.govt.nz

Electric heatersGood for:• heating a small room infrequently

and for short periods only• very cheap to buy.Be aware: • they are more expensive to run

than most other heating options• there are different types (radiant,

convection, fan) that deliver heat in various ways

• the different types all have the same efficiency (the same amount of heat output per unit of electricity used)

• many have built-in thermostats, but generally they aren't very accurate.

Central heatingGood for: • providing heating for your

entire house• convenience - you can control the

temperature with the thermostat and use the timer

• zoning - many are zone-controlled so you can control the temperature in different parts of the home.

Be aware:• can be expensive to install and

to run if your house isn't well insulated or is draughty

• heat can be supplied by a range of heating systems e.g. gas, wood pellet, hot water heat pump

• it’s worth choosing a system that has an individual thermostat for each room

• some are a lot more efficient than others - look for Energy Star rating.

Unflued gas (natural or LPG)Good for:• back-up heating during power cuts,

if your normal heating relies on electricity to operate

Be aware:• unflued LPG heaters are the most

expensive form of heating• there are health risks - it will pollute

air with toxic gases and large amounts of water vapour, so you must keep at least one window open when it’s in use and never use in bedrooms

• they can make your home damp and mouldy

• portable LPG heaters can be a fire risk, as anything too close can quickly catch alight.

The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century. It is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood). Despite this, in some countries Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.

The modern Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908 in the United States, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia.

Anna’s mission was to honour her own mother by continuing work she started and to set aside a day to honour mothers, ‘the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world’.

Anna's mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

A time to thank Mum for all she has doneMother’s Day is a modern celebration honouring one’s own mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

What to get Choosing the perfect gift for

Mother's Day can be a difficult task for some but with a little creative thinking and planning you can surprise Mum with just the right gift to make her smile.

First put some thought into it. Don't go to the store and purchase

that first bouquet of roses you find. Consider her interests and what she likes before plopping down some cash on something just for the sake of getting her a gift.

Some great gift ideas to consider are:

• Potted Plants - choose something in a decorative pot or in her favourite colour.

• Perfume - make sure you know what scent she wears and likes. She might hate floral scents and prefers fruity smells. Do a little recon to find out what she might be running low on.

• Bird Feeder - if she loves gardening or the outdoors a beautiful bird feeder could be a nice addition to her garden.

• Spa day - treat Mum to a spa day. Nothing melts away the stress more than being pampered. Something as simple as a pedicure and a chance to get away for an hour could be the perfect gift for Mum, especially if she is a new mother.

• Earrings - simple and elegant earrings that she can wear with any outfit are a simple way to let Mum know she is appreciated.

Adding to this luscious mix of pests is the seemingly never ending supply of leaves and other foliage who have abandoned their deciduous dwellings.

While leaves can provide a great natural source of mulch when left to rot in wooded areas, you don’t want them decomposing in piles on your lawn as this will cause patches of lawn to die off.

It is better to rake them up once or twice a week and put them in the compost heap where their nutrients can

meld with other matter to create a tasty blend of soil for future garden beds.

Concerning your vegetable garden; you have two options.

You can either have a complete clear out and let it rest for winter, perhaps sewing an autumn/winter crop of mustard seed to later mulch in to revitalise your soil, or you can proceed with your vegetable gardening over the winter, growing items suitable for the season.

Apples, beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cauliflowers, celery, courgettes, lettuces, marrows, parsnips, passion fruit, pears, peas, pumpkins, quince, rhubarb, tomatoes.

If you’ve forgotten Mother’s Day, you can make it up to a garden loving

mum by getting her a plant to brighten her garden. Plants for a winter garden

Cyclamen, Bellis, Cineraria, Flowering Kale, Leucadendron, Polyanthus, Primula, Snapdragons, Wildflowers, Winter Roses – Hellebores, Violas.

It’s the last chance to plant spring bulbs, so add a variety of these to your shopping list. This will provide a wonderful surprise when the weather brightens.

May is the month for mothers. For those who love gardening, the gift of a Cyclamen, left, will brighten her garden while Primula, right, provides a well needed splash of colour in a winter garden.
