Another toxic algae site in Selwynu by Kent Caddick
A second site containing a potentially toxic algae, known to be fatal to animals especially dogs, has been discovered in Selwyn.
The Canterbury District Health board has issued a health warning after the potentially toxic blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) were found in Glentunnel on the Selwyn River.
This follows the discovery of the algae in the Selwyn River at the Whitecliffs Domain late last month and both are part of a wide spread algae bloom across a number of Canterbury rivers this summer. Dr Alistair Humphrey
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health, said the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals.
“Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips,” Dr Humphrey said.
“If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you’ve had

contact with dark brown/black algal mats or water in this area.” He said reticulated town water supplies are currently safe but no one should drink the water from the river at any time.
“Even after boiling the water from the river, it does not remove the toxin therefore should not be consumed.”
Animals that show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats should be taken to a vet immediately. ¢

The Burnham Vege Co-op is a hub of
the Christchurch South Fruit and Vege
Co-op and has been running since the
end of 2012.
Co-op member Kezia Tapsell said they
created the Burnham hub as they had
been placing approximately six orders
a week for people out here in Burnham
through a Hornby hub.
“We thought the best thing would be
to start our own hub,” Ms Tapsell said.
Ms Tapsell and Keryn Paekau
organised the hub by creating a bank
account for members to deposit money
for orders and a Facebook page where
people can get updates.
“We now have approximately 30
people who are part of our hub and
average 25 orders a week. Some
people only order fortnightly and some
packs are shared between two smaller
families,” Ms Tapsell said.
She said anyone can join the hub and
it is especially good for those who want
to have healthy food for their families
on a budget.
To join the Burnham hub members
need to be available to help with packing
produce and collecting it from Hoon Hay
once every eight to ten weeks.
“We have lots of different families
who are part of our hub, including
mothers who work full time, part time
or are stay at home mothers, or single
mothers, but they all manage to make
it work.
Community co-ops make
healthy eating affordable by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Small pockets of Selwyn communities are making it more affordable for families to eat healthy food
with the introduction of Vege Co-operative hubs.
“We have one family from Leeston,
one from Rolleston and one from
Broadfield too, so we don’t really mind
if you aren’t living in Burnham you just
need to be able to work with the way
we run it.” The Rolleston Vege Co-op has been
running since June 2013, according
to Adrienne Harold Braam who set up
the hub with her daughter Tammy after
they had seen the success of a hub
run through their church in Hornby. “We
enjoyed and benefitted from the low
cost of the packs — $20 value for only
$10 — and wanted to make the produce
packs available in the local Rolleston
area to help others. We were also keen
to get to know more people in the local
area,” Ms Harold Braam said.
She said the Rolleston Vege co-op
has members who are willing to donate
time to help others who cannot volunteer
because of different circumstances
such as disability or ill health.
“Some members also pay for produce
packs for families in need.”
Elizabeth May, left, receives her pack of fruit and vegetables from fellow Rolleston Vege Co-op

Rolleston relay for lifeu by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Weather extremes did not dampen the spirits of those involved in the Rolleston Relay for Life with $28,000 raised at the event held last weekend at the Rolleston Rugby grounds.
Rolleston relay organiser Jenny Harkerss said the event started in extreme heat and ended in extreme cold, with team members drenched by the final laps.
“Most were still there at the end with smiles on their tired little faces,” Ms Harkerss said.
Twelve teams entered the event which saw team members take turns at walking, jogging or running around a purpose made track from late afternoon, through the night till morning. “We do it overnight to symbolise that cancer never sleeps.”
Ms Harkerss said a candlelight service was held in the evening with the eerie sound of a loan piper playing.
It is the second year the event has been held in Rolleston and Ms Harkerss hopes the event will become a regular yearly event.
“We’re going to keep going. We’ll do it again next year.” ¢
Rockwood bushwalk draws the crowdsu by Cindy Driscoll
The Rockwood Bushwalk and Garden Open Day held on Sunday was a huge success with over 500 people attending and $9,000 being raised for the Hororata Parish.
“We could not be happier with how the day went. It was an amazing turn out with people coming from all over Canterbury and very exciting to raise so much money for the Parish,” Rockwood owner Ben Richards said.
“People were genuinely interested in the history of Rockwood. Quite a few people who came had associations with Rockwood in the past, living and
working, and they brought pictures and stories which was wonderful.”
At 11am a church service was held on the lawns of the historic homestead with over 100 people attending.
“We would like to thank all those who helped make this Open Day a success — it simply would not have been possible without the volunteers and businesses that supported us,” Mr Richards said.

Flights of fancy feature at galleryA 14-year-old Selwyn artist will be one of four featured artists in the latest Malvern Community Arts Council exhibition at the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield.
Henry Turner’s work will be featured alongside Martin Carryer’s sculpture, paintings and drawings by Katrina McGettigan and photographs taken by Rob Lawrence - all who have produced work using the theme of birds.
Turner began showing his art works at the 2012 Selwyn Arts Heart Annual Exhibition when he was the highest earning artist, and then entered Darfield Art Week where he won a prize.
Katrina McGettigan’s works will feature a striking series of birds which draw on the finer details of the bird’s feathers, colours and expressions.
Rob Lawrence’s photographs are mostly of birds you can see in the Darfield and Canterbury region, while Martin Carryer’s sculptures use farming tools and hardware in illustration.

ALL BREEDS CATERED FOR
Primary schools in leadership changesu by Belinda Cullen-Reid
For three Selwyn primary schools the new school year has also marked a change at the helm.
Darfield, Greendale and Sheffield schools have all seen a change of guard, though not all schools have appointed permanent replacements.
Sheffield Primary School’s outgoing principal Simon Moriarty will this year take up a position at South Hornby School. Nick Pratt who previously held a senior management position at Nelson Intermediate will take over the position permanently.
Mr Pratt is looking forward to becoming part of the small rural community.
“It is an amazing opportunity for my young family to grow up in a rural community that stands for qualities often lacking in big centres,” Mr Pratt said.
Darfield Primary School community said farewell to former Principal Markham McMullen at the end of last year.
Darfield primary have appointed Sue Walls previously from Lyttleton Main School as the school’s acting principal
for term one, according to Board of Trustees chairperson Genevieve Galletly.
Lyttleton Main is to merger with Lyttleton West School this year, dissolving Ms Walls’ job there.
“At this stage she will just be here for one term. We’re hoping to appoint someone [permanently] by the end of February,” Mrs Galletly said.
While Greendale’s former principal Mathew Thompson heads offshore to a teaching position in Dubai, the school’s junior room teacher from last year will take on the role of acting principal and senior room teacher.
Greendale School BOT Chairperson Karen Ridgen said the school didn’t want to rush into appointing someone permanently at the end of last year.
“We feel confident we’ve done the right thing,” she said.
Delia Gameson who was on a fixed term contract with Kirwee Model School last year will teach in the Greendale School junior room for term one. ¢

Selwyn Parenting Network celebrates Children’s Dayu by Kent Caddick
The Selwyn Parenting Network is throwing its support behind this year’s Children’s Day celebration.
This year’s Children’s Day event will be held on Sunday, March 2 outside the Rolleston Community Centre in Rolleston Drive, from 12pm to 3pm.
Selwyn Parenting Network (SPN) spokesperson Wendy Cross says while this year there will still be a host of activities for the little ones they have tried to make this year’s event appealing to older children.
“As well as the usual activities for the young ones, such as bouncy castles, face painting, balloons, farmyard animals and pony rides, there will also be a bungy run and skate park activities which will appeal to the older children.
”This is a free community event organised by Selwyn Parenting Network thanks to many volunteers, sponsors and supporters including Lottery Grants Board, The Tindall Foundation, Selwyn District Council and the Canterbury Community Trust.”
Mrs Cross says they also want to get the message out to new parents and young families who have recently arrived in Selwyn that SPN is there to give them support.
“We are a not-for-profit organisation and we provide support for parents in anything to do with bringing their children up in Selwyn.
“We provide links and information for parents about what services and activities there are for their children in Selwyn.” Mrs Cross says
SPN is currently governed by a small but enthusiastic team of parents from Rolleston, Prebbleton and Leeston.
“We would love to have more enthusiastic people from throughout Selwyn join our committee which meets once a month.”
For more information on the Selwyn Parenting Network or to be added to their monthly email newsletter, email [email protected] or check out their website www.spn.org.nz or facebook page at www.facebook.com/SelwynParentingNetwork. ¢

Intersections under the spotlightu by Kent Caddick
The Selwyn District Council and the police are launching a campaign to remind motorists to stop at intersections.
Over the past five years, 558 or 42% of all crashes in Selwyn district happened at intersections. Over 75% of these happened in higher speed areas on the open road. The crashes resulted in seven fatalities and 81 serious injuries.
Council’s road safety co-ordinator Ngaire Tinning said last year the council carried out a survey of driver behaviour at 20 local intersections controlled by stop signs.
“The results showed on average, one third of drivers did not come to a complete stop when they were required to do so,” Mrs Tinning said.
“Many of the drivers recorded as not stopping in the survey were slowing down, nearly stopping, but then carrying on through the intersection after a quick look.
“Rolling stops are very common in Selwyn District and all over New Zealand but they are not a safe way to approach a busy intersection with a stop sign.”
Mrs Tinning said that with a rolling stop, motorists often assume they will be able to drive through an intersection and do not allow enough time to stop for other traffic.
“The other problem with a rolling stop is that people often don’t look properly in both directions before continuing on which can result in crashes.”
p Police will be monitoring Selwyn intersections to ensure motorists come to a complete stop
As well as reminding drivers to stop at intersections, the road safety campaign will also encourage drivers to take another look at intersections to check that they see other vehicles and they have enough time to safely turn or travel through the crossing if other cars are moving quickly.
Police will continue to monitor local intersections as this is where the majority of serious crashes in Selwyn are occurring.
“A joint effort from all drivers is required to reduce the number and severity of crashes on our roads,” Senior Sergeant Phil Newton said. ¢

Lead in face paint warrants recallu Article supplied by ConsumerNZ
Tests of a children’s face paint kit have found it contains extremely high levels of lead.
Young children are particularly at risk from exposure to lead, which can cause developmental and other problems. Lead is prohibited from use in face paints under the Cosmetic Products Group Standard.
Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin said Consumer NZ has found a Carnival Colors-branded paint contained 15,200mg/kg of lead. “This face paint kit claimed it had
‘passed authentication’ to European toy safety standards but the high levels of lead detected meant it should never have been sold.”
The Carnival Colors kit, which was made in China, was bought at discount store in Lower Hutt. It contained blue, green, red, and yellow paints.
The high levels of lead were detected in the yellow paint in the kit. The product packaging failed to provide contact

details for the New Zealand importer. Following enquiries, Consumer found the kit was imported by Translucky International, the trading name of Apollogrip Importers Ltd.
Apollogrip said the paint had been distributed to stores around the country and has now contacted its customers to tell them to remove it from sale.
Consumer also found the product for sale at a Wellington toy retailer.
“We have advised the store of the test results and the owner undertook to remove it from the shelf,” Ms Chetwin said.
Consumer advises anyone who has bought the Carnival Colors face paint not to use it. Consult your doctor if you’re concerned your child has used the product.
Ms Chetwin said Consumer is currently testing other children’s face paints for the presence of lead. Test
results for the paint have been given to the Ministry of Health, which provided funding for the testing. ¢

Get the effects of exerciseu by Karen Hulston
While most people focus on the physical benefits associated with exercise, the psychological benefits can be equally if not more important.
Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals that leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Recent studies have shown that exercise reduces stress, alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression, improves self-esteem, boosts brain power and promotes good sleeping patterns.
Some people still choose not to exercise as they often believe they are too busy due to work and family commitments.
After having my fourth child in late 2012, it seemed like an impossible task to exercise. I had gained 20kg and felt overweight and unmotivated — these negative feelings leading me to eat convenient, comfort foods with no nutritional benefit. This in turn meant my body had no energy to exercise as I was just managing to get through each day.
In March 2013 I came to the realisation that I had gone from being fit enough to keep up with the most elite soldiers in the army, to being an unhappy, unmotivated mess.
The excuses didn’t cut it anymore so I broke the cycle. Firstly I stopped the excuses and then I made a decision to get off my big butt and do something about it.
I was then faced with the reality of being unfit and having no spare time for myself. I knew whatever I did I had to incorporate exercise into my family and social life. After a bit of research I discovered there are many opportunities to exercise around Selwyn and it can be so much fun when you get friends and family involved. Double whammy.
Below are the things I did with my family to kick start my exercise regime. These are also fantastic things to do if you are busy, a beginner to exercise,
older, recovering from injury, pre or post natal, or have not exercised for a while.
I have since lost the excess 20kg and even though I am now juggling the kids and work, being fitter and healthier has made me so much happier and given me back the energy to be at my full potential.
I understand that exercising for some people can be extremely challenging but it is usually mental attitude that prevents people from exercising not so much physical ability.
I have learnt from personal experience that the bigger the challenge the sweeter the reward.
Karen’s guide to getting out there1) Bike riding either around Selwyn or if you
can get out to McLean’s Island they hire child bike attachments and toddler seats.
2) Meet friends and push the prams around your local neighbourhood. You can stop at the playground for exercises and a picnic.
3) Kids ride their scooters at the local skate park whilst you exercise around the park. Stop for a coffee at a cafe afterwards, especially good if they have a children’s play area.
4) Go to Rolleston pool with another mother — take turns watching the kids whilst one of you swims laps.
5) Invite friends around for exercise. The kids can play whilst adults exercise. Have coffee afterwards.
6) Play backyard cricket or your favourite sport with the family. Invite the neighbours over.
7) Crank up the music at home, give your kids a dusting brush and get out the vacuum. You will be spending time with the kids, cleaning your house and exercising all at the same time. ¢
Welcome to 2014Welcome to the second edition of Abundant Living in 2014.
Over the past 10 years I have written over 400 columns covering many topics. Most of these are related in some way to the role of nutrients in protecting and reclaiming our health. In the process I have spoken by phone to thousands of readers and offered personalised advice where appropriate. I trust you will benefit from the comments and advice. I also write a longer weekly email column. To subscribe to this column just follow the instructions below.
By way of introduction to new readers, I am the founder of my company Abundant Health, established in 1998. I work with various international experts to formulate what I think are a very special group of nutritional supplements. I also practise as a nutritional medicine practitioner providing personalised advice in a structured way. This column brings together my thoughts as a both a nutritional therapist and supplement formulator and researcher.
The next few months will be a very special time for me as we introduce a product I am sure will have a profoundly positive affect on cardiovascular health. This is a completely natural product that research shows is the most effective natural cholesterol support product available. Many people have genetically high cholesterol which causes an imbalance in the series of liver enzymes responsible for new cholesterol production. This US patented product will help balance these enzymes. This will be excellent for people who cannot tolerate cholesterol medicines or for those who prefer not to take them. People on cholesterol medication will also be able to take it safely as it will have many heart health benefits not just cholesterol balance.
I will be writing a new series on heart health which will focus on the types of diet and supplements that can offer significant benefits for those concerned about their heart and circulatory health.
We will be looking at most aspects of cardiovascular health with everything from cholesterol to the actual processes which cause arteries to block. We will look at hypertension and in particular the types of diet proven to help lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health. In the meantime feel free to call me for personalised advice.

• Be of acceptable quality (see definition below).
• Be fit for a particular purpose that you asked about.
• Match the description given in advertisements or sales brochures, or by the sales assistant.
• Match the sample or demonstration model.
• Be owned by the consumer, once purchased.
• Be a reasonable price, if no price or pricing formula has been previously agreed.Manufacturers (the definition
includes importers) in New Zealand guarantee that: • Spare parts and repair facilities will be available for a reasonable time.
• They will honour any written warranty that comes with their products.
• Goods are of acceptable quality. • Goods match their description.
ServicesService providers guarantee their
services will be:Performed with reasonable care
and skill. • Fit for the particular purpose they were supplied for.
• Completed within a reasonable time.
• A reasonable price, if no price or pricing formula has been previously agreed.
Acceptable qualityThis means goods:
• Do what they are made to do. • Are acceptable in appearance and finish.
• Are free from minor defects. • Are safe and durable. The Act’s terms ‘reasonable’ and
‘acceptable’ are deliberately open-ended. It depends on what a reasonable consumer would think was acceptable based on the nature of the goods, the price, and any statements that have been made about the goods.
A concert violin is required to meet a higher standard than a child’s cheap instrument. Ultimately a tribunal referee or a judge may have to decide what is reasonable or acceptable in the circumstances.
If a defect was pointed out to you before you bought the good, then it doesn’t count towards making it unacceptable. ¢

The Espress Yourself orange and date sconeu by Belinda Cullen-Reid
Belinda Gort, owner of Espress Yourself Café in Darfield, has a very inventive husband.
By day Stephen works his regular engineering job, installing commercial fire equipment, but come Friday night he picks up tools of a different kind and is equally dab handed with a spatula as he is a welder.
Stephen has invented his own recipe for the café’s highly regarded orange and date scones, which have proven so popular that one customer calls every Saturday morning to get her weekly fix.
He preps for the scones late Friday and then joins Belinda in the kitchen early Saturday morning to cook his wonderful creations.
Stephen shares with us his recipe for scone success.
Engineers’ Orange and Date Scones Recipe
A handful of dates, chopped1 cup of real orange juice
p One of the secrets to the success of Stephen’s scones is soaking the chopped dates overnight in real orange juice and organic honey

1 desertspoon of organic honey3 cups flour6 teaspoons baking powder50 grams butter1 eggMilk to mixSoak the chopped dates in the orange
juice and honey overnight. The next day, in a separate bowl, mix
your dry ingredients.Grate the butter into the dry
ingredients and knead it with your fingers until it is well combined with the flour.
Add mixture of dates with orange juice and honey.
Put with this an egg and mix lightly.Add enough milk to mix to form a
dough that combines but does not stick to your hands.
Roll out to a 25ml thickness and then cut into rectangles of your choice of size.
Preheat your oven to 180°C.Place the scones on a greased
oven tray and cook for around 15 — 20 minutes.
Remove from oven when golden brown.Sprinkle a little sifted icing sugar on
top and garnish with pieces of orange peel or segments of orange.
Enjoy with butter and a lovely pot of Earl Grey tea. ¢

Coalgate, Hororata & GlentunnelSPOTLIGHT ONThe township of Hororata is situated 15 kilometres Southwest of Darfield. The Maori translation for Hororata is ‘drooping rata’, referring to the large number of Rata trees to be found in that area.
The township is well known for several historic features including the St John’s Anglican Church which was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
Former New Zealand Premiere Sir John Hall resided nearby at Station Terrace and was instrumental in the building of the historic stone church around 1910.
Sir John is buried in the church grounds. Another historic building
is Coton’s Cottage to the east of the township.
The cob cottage was built in the 1860s on the land of Bentley Coton. It also suffered extensive damage in the 2011 earthquake and is currently being rebuilt.
Down the road from Hororata is Coalgate, a village with historical roots going back to pre European Maori times. It is said to be a resting place for Maori who were on eeling expeditions and for those travelling to the West Coast.
In later times Coalgate was known as the entry point or ‘gate’ to the lignite coal mined in the Malvern Hills.
While the use of coal declined in the twentieth century, Coalgate has retained its relationship with mining, with the commercial production of bentonite
beginning in the 1950s at a plant in Coalgate, which is still in operation.
Settled in the Malvern Hills, the township of Glentunnel, near Coalgate once had coal mines, a brickworks and produced pottery. Many of the town’s historic buildings are covered in the bricks that were manufactured in the town.
A walkway near the town takes visitors to some of these historic sites.
A railway track once connected Glentunnel and Coalgate with Darfield and Christchurch, for the transportation of coal and farming goods.
Glentunnel has a modern community centre where local organisations and groups hold functions, meetings and classes.
A picturesque golf course provides recreation for those living locally or visiting. ¢

Dogs all accounted foru by Kent Caddick
The Selwyn District Council’s animal control team is celebrating another successful dog registration campaign.
For the fifth year running the council has managed to track and re-register or otherwise account for every one of the dogs on its database in the district — one of the few councils in New Zealand to do so. This year, all dogs have been re-registered by January, five months ahead of the council’s target of June.
Animal Control team leader Steve Clarke said we are lucky in Selwyn to live in an area where most people are responsible dog owners.
“They register their dogs on time, take good care of them and generally we don’t have many issues with dog behaviour.”
Mr Clarke said Selwyn is one of only a small number of areas in New Zealand which has re-registered all of the dogs on their database.
“This is good for our dog owners as with high registration rates they can more easily find their dogs if they go missing.”
As Selwyn has around 11,400 dogs registered, tracing the whereabouts of every dog and ensuring they are re-registered or taken off the district’s dog database is a big job.
“We are pleased that this year all the dogs in Selwyn on our databases have been registered or accounted for by January, as this process can often take many more months.”
The Council is planning to introduce an online dog registration system this year which will make it easier for owners to register their dogs, and is also investigating offering a reduced dog registration rate for dogs which have been registered on time for a number of years without having any reported problems.
Dog owners are required to register dogs over three months old with the council every year. ¢

Help for older driversFour free Confident Driving courses are being offered in Selwyn over the coming months to help older drivers drive safely and with confidence.
The number of older drivers is increasing nationally and crash statistics indicate that in the majority of crashes in Selwyn, involving people over 60, driver errors such as failing to stop or give way at intersections or poor observation of other drivers, have played a role.
“As many residents live in rural areas or smaller townships it is important for older people to be able to drive
safely, to be able to access services and maintain their independence,” Selwyn Road Safety Advisor Ngaire Tinning said.
She said Confident Driving courses are designed to assist older drivers to be confident in their driving and increase awareness of the traffic environment and other road users.
“It also aims to assist mature drivers to think about how, where and even
when they travel in their car. They can consider planning safer routes to drive and to avoid extremely busy times when driving to the supermarket or shops.”
The courses are delivered by Age Concern on behalf of Selwyn District Council as part of the council’s road safety programme.
Upcoming free courses, which also include lunch and refreshments, are being offered at these locations: Lincoln; February 26; Darfield, March 13; Rolleston, March 25; Leeston, April 9.

Bahara — character family home with B&B unitsHome of the week
This substantial three bedroom character home offers generous bedrooms and spacious living areas including a media room with projector and gas fire.
There is an Ingrid Geldoff designed kitchen with granite bench and double oven, and a modern tiled bathroom with another toilet and shower off the separate laundry.
A fantastic outdoor entertaining area has a built in BBQ, with views overlooking the animals and up to the impressive mountains beyond. The high stud ceiling gives the home a light and airy feel.
There is good storage throughout and the carpets and furnishings are all in very good condition.
When the home was relocated to its current site, it was substantially refurbished with insulated walls and ceilings, new wiring, piling, plumbing and walls re-lined.
The home is heated by two heat pumps and the roof on the house has
just been repainted. It is sited on 7,846m² with colourful gardens and has one large paddock with an animal shelter or shed. The six friendly alpacas would love to stay if you want them.
A three bay shed, with one bay lock-up and large shingled driveway area gives plenty of space for vehicles and the boat or caravan.
Income can be derived from the three self-contained units which each have their own
bathroom and kitchenette, a heat pump and gas hot water. Each unit comes equipped with furniture, linen, and free-view TV.
The units are currently configured as one queen and two twin single rooms. They provide ideal accommodation away from
