* South African cricketer Wayne Parnell kneels on the ground as Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (left) walks past him after scoring a world record breaking double century (200 runs) during the second One Day International (ODI) cricket match at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior on February 24. India played South Africa and finished with 401 runs for the loss of three wickets. Cover photograph: The batting legend celebrates.

was not certain whether the England team would travel to India.

Tendulkar had not only fashioned an unlikely Indian victory but he also saw his innings as providing some balm to the terrible wounds suff ered by his home town. It was the clearest sign of how much he identifi ed with his country and his country with him.

The gesture he makes after achieving a landmark score always sees him raising his face to the skies. He has been doing that ever since the World Cup of 1999 when he lost his father and is meant to acknowledge his homage.

This combination of fi lial piety and patriotism makes him so appealing to the Indians.

A sporting fi gure has not symbolised a country in this way since Australia before the war with Donald Bradman. Appropriately, shortly before his death, the Don, still considered the greatest batsman in the game, anointed Tendulkar as his successor.

In a country where public fi gures are held in little regard, and almost always considered venal and corrupt, Tendulkar has a god-like status. Not even the most cynical Indian, a breed of which there are many, questions his integrity and probity.

The most remarkable proof of this came at the height of the cricket corruption crisis at the turn of the century when many leading Indian cricketers were suspected of having been in collusion with bookies to fi x matches. I was talking to Raj Singh,

then head of Indian cricket, who had given Tendulkar his fi rst break in the international game at the tender age of 16.

His words could not have been more emphatic: “You know why I believe nobody can fi x a cricket match? Because there is only one man good enough to infl uence a match on his own. That man is Sachin and he would never even consider doing it. No other cricketer is quite as good and no other cricketer quite as honest.” Indeed, such is Tendulkar’s status in India that, on the two occasions that his probity has been questioned, India has been ready to forfeit a Test series. The fi rst was on a tour of South Africa in the winter of 2001 when he was punished for cleaning the ball without an umpire’s supervision.

India exploded with such wrath that it became the subject of debate in the Indian parliament, the burden of the MPs’ argument being if a man as spotless as Tendulkar could be doubted, then India’s honour had been stained. For a time it seemed that India would not only abandon the tour but also sever its ties with world cricket.

Then, early in 2008 on a tour of Australia, the Indian off -spinner Harbhajan Singh was accused of calling the Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds a “monkey”. Tendulkar, who was batting with Singh at the time, testifi ed he had not heard Singh utter such words. For the Indians that was the end of the argument. Tendulkar had spoken, so Singh must be innocent. They were so indignant that the Australians would not take Tendulkar’s word that, after Singh was punished, the Indians threatened to pull the plug on the tour.

This identifi cation with the country has been assisted by the fact that Tendulkar’s emergence on the world stage has coincided with wider changes in Indian society.

In 1991, two years after he made his debut against Pakistan at the age of 16, India, under pressure from the International Monetary Fund, was forced to open up its economy, providing the launch pad for the country’s growth.

If that meant India broke free from its historically sluggish growth rate, then Tendulkar, barely 19 at the time, had also become a mould breaker.

1992 was the year he broke through a historic barrier in English cricket by becoming the fi rst non-white ever to play for Yorkshire.

That season in England he displayed to the full the adult that was emerging.

English cricket correspondents were astonished to fi nd how polite and deferential young Tendulkar was, always addressing older cricketers such as Geoff rey Boycott as ‘Mr’.

When Boycott, showing him round his beloved Yorkshire, suggested he chat up the young secretaries by taking them out for curry meals, Tendulkar just smiled. But, later in the season while I was writing a feature on him, I was struck by the fact that he would not let my photographer take pictures of his bat which did not have any endorsements.

He was eager to publicise cricket gear which carried sponsor logos, showing that even at 18 he knew the

value of sponsorship.Since then, India has emerged as

the economic powerhouse of cricket providing more than 80% of all world cricket’s income. Tendulkar has become one of the highest-paid sportsmen in the world, with an income reputed to be $15mn a year. In India, a Tendulkar endorsement of a product is almost certain to make it a success, and nobody who visits the country can miss the huge billboards displaying his image.

Yet during all this time Tendulkar, while accumulating runs and riches, has remained a soft-spoken, very correct public man who has never courted scandal. He is happily married with two kids and, unlike many of his contemporaries, has never allowed his public image to distract him from his job of making runs. There could never remotely be a John Terry scandal with Tendulkar.

If this suggests remarkable dedication, then that was instilled very early on in his life. His parents decided to send him to a school in Mumbai some distance from his home. But, given how impossible the traffi c congestion is in that city and aware that travel time could eat into his desire to play cricket during the school week, he lived with his uncle near the school, coming home only at weekends.

The dedication soon bore fruit and Tendulkar was only 14 when he made 326 not out, as it happens against my old Mumbai school, in the process setting a then world record of a third-wicket stand of 664. Tendulkar, despite being brought up in the Mumbai school of batting where you defend before you attack, has been more entertaining, his style infl uenced by Vivian Richards, rather than his fellow Maharashtrian, Sunil Gavaskar.

Cricket-lovers may endlessly debate whether Tendulkar is the greatest of all batsmen, as the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne believes. But what is undoubtedly true is his ability to adapt his batting in a manner which almost none of his contemporaries have displayed.

In 2004, struggling on a tour of Australia and fi nding his favourite cover drive producing not runs but catches to fi elders, he went into the last Test determined not to cover drive and ended up with a very un-Tendulkar double 100. The innings nearly led to an Indian victory and showed his extraordinary will to conquer adversity.

A few years ago it seemed Tendulkar was ready to bow out. He was not part of the victorious Indian World Twenty20 team of 2007. But in the past two years he appears to have rediscovered his appetite for Test and one-day cricket and there are still clearly peaks for him to climb.

He could become the fi rst man to score a total of 100 centuries in international cricket; he currently has 93. And he has yet to score a triple-century in a Test innings, Virender Sehwag, his protege, being the only Indian to break the 300-barrier.

In the process Tendulkar has become the father fi gure in the Indian dressing room, an ex-captain happily guiding a new and younger generation of leaders. That is rare in Indian life, let alone cricket.

This, combined with his ability to cope with the pressures his countrymen impose and still set records, marks his true greatness. — The Independent

his achievements to India. He did the same when, just over a year ago, his century in the Chennai Test helped to defeat England. The Test had come just weeks after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. For some time it

The glamour of Transatlantic crossings has returned to New York with an exhibit on the Art Deco elegance of the French liner SS Normandie.

“The Normandie was the most magnifi cent of all the ocean liners,” said Bill Miller, curator of the DECODENCE exhibit

running until January next year at the South Street Seaport Museum in lower Manhattan.

The ship was the largest and fastest of what were known as “fl oating palaces” at a time when airliners could not yet make Transatlantic trip and ships were not just a mode of transport, but islands of fantasy.

The exhibit shows off the riches making Normandie, which completed its maiden voyage to the United States in 1935, the pride of the French merchant fl eet.

Original interior works by famous Art Deco artists, furnishings, fi lm footage, voyage logs, uniforms, and a Gaveau piano played by German siren Marlene Dietrich in her fi rst class suite hint at the extreme luxury.

Here was a ship where the fi rst class dining room accommodated 700 guests sitting under 12 pillars of illuminated Lalique glass and 38 matching columns along the walls. There was a winter garden fi lled with exotic fl ora and fauna, a swimming pool, and a theatre.

First class suites had pianos, multiple bedrooms and their own decks. There was even “a pale pink light to make women look younger,” Miller

said. No wonder that on Normandie’s arrival in New York 100,000 people

lined the docks to witness the moment. “It had the very best of French culture, design and style at a time when

the French government wanted it to be a fl oating ambassador,” Miller said. The items in the exhibit are largely the property of New Yorker Mario

Pulice, who collected them for years. “New York is the best place to collect objects from the Normandie

because the ship was stripped here. The furniture was sold here so it is all around,” he said.

The sad side of the Normandie exhibit is that other than these treasures, little remains.

The ship’s 1,300-strong crew, looking after 2,000 passengers at a time, crossed the Atlantic 139 times.

But the ship was stranded in New York by the start of World War II and in 1942 it was requisitioned by the US government, then rechristened as USS Lafayette for use as a troop transport.

After a fi re in 1942, the vessel was broken up and the incredible contents were auctioned off .

Now a ship that defi ned an era has vanished along with the famous passengers it carried — Cary Grant, Bob Hope, Joseph Kennedy, Ernest Hemingway and Walt Disney.

“Normandie was the preeminent ship of her time and, in many ways, one of the fi nest to ever sail,” said Mary Ellen Pelzer, director of the South Street Museum.

“This exhibition allows visitors to experience the beauty and grandeur of this majestic luxury liner and also appreciate the special meaning she has to New York where she ultimately met her inglorious end.” — AFP

Although Windows 7 has been out for some time, many are just now thinking about upgrading.

And that’s when the questions begin. The existence of multiple editions, different upgrade options, restrictions on how a PC may be upgraded, the packaging of 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the operating system in the same box, and volume pricing are enough to confuse even experienced techies. Read on for some help.

I’m confused about the “upgrade” version of Windows 7. Which operating systems can I upgrade with it, and can I perform an installation on

top of my existing Windows XP? How is the existence of a previous operating system verified?

For each edition of Windows 7 — Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate — Microsoft offers an Upgrade version that sells for substantially less than the full version of each edition. In order to qualify for the upgrade version — or activate it — you must have an existing version of Windows XP or Windows Vista installed on your computer.

Plenty of caveats come with the upgrade versions of Windows 7, however. First, only with an identical edition of Windows Vista can you do an “in place” upgrade of the operating system. In other words, if you currently run Vista Home Premium, you can purchase and install Windows 7 Home Premium as easily as

popping in your Windows 7 disk and selecting the upgrade option. You cannot, however, upgrade Vista Home Premium with the Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate editions.

You also cannot do an “in place” upgrade of Windows XP. Instead, with your existing XP operating system installed, you will need to reboot your computer with your Windows 7 upgrade disk in the DVD drive and allow the operating system to be installed into a new folder or directory.

Many people wonder whether they can do a clean installation of Windows 7 using an upgrade disk. A clean installation is one in which you allow the operating system to completely erase and reformat your computer’s hard drive during the installation process. This is often considered the best way to install a new operating system, since all of

the old files that may have caused trouble in the past are gone for good.

The answer is that you can perform a clean installation, but you will need to ensure that a qualifying prior version of Windows is both installed and activated on some other drive within the same computer. If that’s not the case, you will be able to install Windows 7, but you will not be able to activate it properly.

The new computer I’m looking at comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, but it’s possible to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate for an additional charge. Would Professional or Ultimate be worth the extra money? What do you get with these two versions over Home Premium?

Home Premium is the version that’s right for most individuals who do not need to connect to a corporate network or run legacy applications. Windows 7 Professional adds the “domain join” feature that makes for easy and secure connections to corporate networks, and it includes the ability to run Windows XP Mode, a separate download that essentially installs a copy of XP within Windows 7 so that you can run older applications in a native XP environment.

The Professional edition also allows you to back up your computer to a home or corporate network. The Ultimate edition includes everything found in less expensive editions, plus BitLocker

data encryption, which can encrypt removable drives for industrial-strength data security.

I recently purchased the

Windows 7 upgrade. It comes with two disks — one for 32-bit Windows 7 and one for 64-bit Windows 7. I have the 32-bit version installed on my desktop and I recently purchased a laptop with Vista 64-bit installed. Can I upgrade the Vista version with the 64-bit Windows 7 disk?

Although your Windows 7 upgrade package contains two disks — one for the 32-bit version of Windows 7 and one for the 64-bit version — the licence covers the installation of only one of those versions, not both. So if you have already activated the 32-bit version on your desktop computer, you will not be able to activate the 64-bit version on your notebook computer. To do so, you’ll need to purchase an additional licence.

If you intend to purchase an additional licence for Windows 7, you can go ahead and upgrade your existing Vista with the 64-bit version of Windows 7 that you received. Just don’t enter your existing licence key during installation; activate the 64-bit version only after you receive the new license key.

Does Microsoft offer any kind of volume licensing for Windows 7? I have two kids, and they each have computers, so I need to buy three licenses for Windows 7.

Yes, Microsoft offers a Windows 7 Family Pack edition, which is a three-license version of the Home Premium edition of the operating system. Note that the Family Pack sells for about the same price as three separate copies of Home Premium Upgrade, which requires a previously-installed version of Windows. There’s no Family Pack upgrade option for the Professional or Ultimate editions of Windows 7.

I’ve always heard that you

should wait until the first service pack of a new operating system before upgrading. Is Windows 7 different?

I think most experts would argue that it is. First, unlike the initial releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista, there have been very few reports of major problems that a service pack would fix. Windows 7 underwent extensive beta testing and was deemed stable by many even during the pre-release stage. What’s more, Windows 7 is not a radical departure from its predecessor, Windows Vista. With Windows 7, Microsoft clearly focused on cleaning up many of the annoyances that drove legions of Vista users back to XP. So you might view Windows 7 as service pack 3 of Windows Vista. In that sense, it’s already a mature product. – DPA

Music to add ‘yang’ to CeBIT 2010By Jean-Baptiste

In an unlikely yin-yang tie-up that may arrest a decline in Germany’s CeBIT trade fair, organisers have this year (March 2-6) offered the music

industry a bridgehead into the cerebral world of software.

In terms of Chinese philosophy, CeBIT, held every March in the German city of Hanover, is yin, in the sense of shy and insubstantial.

Passionless programmers design software and components which are not much for fair visitors to look at: just discs and dull-looking metallic cubes. The products are technically ingenious, but hard to love.

Music impresarios are usually the opposite: loud, glitzy and assertive, just like many of the heavily amplified rock bands they are trying to lift into fame. Music is the

most emotional of arts. In a word: yang, the other side of the Chinese dichotomy.

The trade fair’s bold move has been to open a new section this year, CeBIT Sounds, where entrepreneurs from these yin and yang worlds can bond and explore mutual business opportunities.

Stefan Milchalk, director of the German Music Industry Federation BVMI, recently explained why music people, who have traditionally associated the word “digital” with piracy and other evils, now want to be one step ahead of the play in digital entertainment. “The cleverest technology is not much use unless you have the content to put on it,” he said.

“At the same time, films, books and music need new channels to reach consumers. CeBIT Sounds is a brilliant way to get music as content into one of the world’s biggest technology fairs.”

BVMI is one of the sponsors

of the new venture, which will include a small sound stage for performances by bands emerging from obscurity and panel discussions in one of the fairground’s hangar-sized pavilions.

The music industry is finally getting comfortable with the idea that mobile phone companies and Web platforms such as MySpace matter more to their future than High Street record shops.

A global entertainment and media report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has reported digital sales reached 20% of music industry turnover in 2008.

The recent demise of Popkomm, a Berlin-based music industry trade fair, was hailed as a perfect opportunity by the CeBIT team, who were looking for a way to put pep back into their declining event.

Now, they hope they can attract some of the interest from Popkomm, where music managers could go to sign up record companies for new acts.

Whether CeBIT Sounds, which has a solidly German focus, will catch the next wave is not yet certain. Most of the European music business gathers every January in Cannes, France for a trade fair, Midem, and a congress, Midemnet, which has been successfully doing for a decade at international level what CeBIT Sounds wants to achieve now.

Some blame CeBIT’s decline on the success of other fairs, such as the Consumer Electronics Show every January in Las Vegas and Berlin’s IFA fair every August, which conjure up warm, yang feelings around home entertainment and appliances.

Others say it is a sign that the digital industry is maturing, with fewer new inventions and more

attention to refining ideas that came out 10 or 15 years ago. Back in 2001, CeBIT had 8,093 exhibitors. Last year, exhibitor numbers sagged 25% and public attendance slipped one fifth to 400,000, but at 4,157, the exhibitor numbers this time round are only down 3% from 4,292 a year ago.

Some past stay-aways, including AMD, Ericsson and Motorola, are even coming back.

But top consumer brands no longer exhibit at CeBIT, which now aims to attract computing department managers, merchants and business executives rather than the general public.

CeBIT remains a key world venue for announcing new products such as laptop and netbook computers. Fairground chief Ernst Raue said many exhibitors would also be spelling out how their products can take advantage of the new high-speed mobile phone standard LTE (Long Term Evolution). – DPA

New laptops offer 3D graphics and solid-state disks

A rash of new laptops goes on display at the CeBIT computing show underlining the growing shift in the market to tinier machines with fancier features such as 3D graphics. Taiwan-based Acer will be at the show with the Aspire 5740D, which will retail in Europe for $1,090. Thanks to a special coating on its 15.6-inch screen, users who wear polarising spectacles can see the third dimension when they play movies. Experts say 2010 will be the year that 3D becomes widely available on notebook computers. Thomas Rau, who writes for the German version of PC World magazine, says, “It’s good for gamers, because they can sense distance better.” Users don’t even need to buy movies and games made in 3D, according to Robert Perenz, Acer product manager. The Aspire can compute a near-3D image for games designed for DirectX 9 graphics and higher. “It can also recompute 2D

films, though it is not quite as impressive as a made-for-3D film like Avatar,” he said. In Germany alone, Europe’s biggest marketplace, mobile computing is huge, accounting for 8.7mn of the 13.1mn computers sold last year, according to digital industry federation Bitkom, a sponsor of the CeBIT fair. The overall figure was a jump of 900,000 from 12.2mn in 2008, proving this part of the industry is nearly recession proof. The March 2-6 fair is mainly directed at trade buyers of business software and computer componentry. Convergence, the linkup of computers and home entertainment, is again visible this year with the release of laptops that can be used to play HDTV movies on televisions. Stefan Hollaender, Sony marketing director, says that is why notebooks need Blu-ray players inside. That is why notebooks often have a jack at the back to connect to a big-screen TV. Ulrich Jaeger, product manager at Toshiba Germany, says he is a bit surprised that shoppers are demanding not only Blu-ray players, but also Blu-ray recording capacity in laptops.

He said this does not make a huge amount of sense, since it is easier to save a library of movies on a cheap external hard drive. “Perhaps they want to make discs of their vacation HD films to give to relations,” he speculated, pointing to steady sales of HD camcorders. The best news for notebook buyers is that prices are fairly stable at the moment, whereas the features available for the same money keep on getting better. The faster DDR3 processors are spreading to ever more machine, as are Intel’s newest Core i5 and i3 chips.Toshiba’s Jaeger says he does not see four-core processors coming to regular notebooks any time soon. “Quad-cores are mainly only needed in high-end gaming notebooks,” he said.Bitkom said in a briefing it expected solid-state drive (SSD) data storage to keep spreading from netbooks to bigger notebooks. An SSD is completely non-mechanical, with no whirring disk, and is pretty jolt-proof. But they are not expected to take over either.“The SSD is still too expensive,” said PC World’s

Rau. Most buyers prefer a conventional hard drive, with common sizes now ranging round 320 or 500GB. Then there are touch screens. The expression has been inescapable since the Apple iPhone came along.Last autumn there was a rash of desktop computers which could be controlled by pinching and flicking one’s fingers over a touch screen and the guessing is that the first notebooks with the feature will show up this year. Sony’s Hollaender observes that it may take a while to catch on: users will have to see an obvious advantage in it. Controlling an app phone by gestures is a delight, but when a user already has a keyboard and mouse, another interface may seem a bit superfluous. Jaeger says that particularly in Germany, buyers are becoming more discriminating and are demanding higher quality in notebooks. “A lot of shoppers are buying their second laptop or even their third. They have a pretty shrewd idea of what features really matter,” he said. — By Sven Appel /DPA

Ahmet Ertegun knew Trey Songz was a special talent. After signing Trey to his label, the late Atlantic Records founder

described him as “one of the most promising R&B artists we have had since we started the company 60 years ago.”

It was a view which the young Trey would not have shared. Born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, he had no interest in singing despite continuous encouragement from his mother and grandmother.

“They’d heard me singing along to records and thought I had a good voice,” recalled 25-year-old Trey. “But this was totally different from singing on stage. It took a lot of persuasion from my family and friends before I agreed to enter a talent show in my home town of Petersburg, Virginia.”

Winning the competition gave Trey the confidence to enter several more. After amassing 19 trophies, he was spotted by producer Troy Taylor who immediately recognised Trey’s ability.

“My family insisted I finish high school before I began my music career. I then moved to New Jersey with Troy and developed my vocal and songwriting skills under his guidance. I also earned my keep by working as Troy’s vocal production assistant which allowed me to gain more experience of the business.”

Trey’s 2005 debut album, I Gotta Make It, became a top 20 hit on Billboard’s Hot 200. But this success was not fuelled by major hit singles. Instead, Trey made his name through the release of mixtapes and collaborations with established artists such as Kevin Lyttle, Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Kim and Trina.

“I didn’t get a really big mainstream hit single until 2007. Can’t Help but Wait, a song from my second album, reached No. 14 on the Hot 100. It also got me a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.”

Increased fan following saw his album, Trey Day, peak at No. 11. But it is his latest album, Ready, which is regarded as Trey’s breakthrough record.

“It debuted at No.3 on the Hot 200 and was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the Grammys. But I’m particularly happy about how well the singles have done. It’s great to finally have my first mainstream top 10 hit with Say Aah.”

Trey is delighted with the progress of his career.

“I feel like every aspect of my music has developed significantly since I started out. The quality of my work has improved as I’ve become more experienced. I’ve grown as both a person and an artist.”

Clear evidence of this was offered to fans last year when Trey took the surprising step of officially releasing Genesis, a mixtape of songs recorded when he was just 15.

“My music is all about sharing emotions and experiences with my fans. I was happy for them to hear what I did when I first started to take music seriously. I see my career as a continuing musical journey and I want everyone to know they are invited along on every step of the way.”

Running a television network can, at times, be like managing a baseball team. Out of the starting line-up,

some become big hitters while others strike out.

The key is to have a backup that can come in when some punch in needed. For CBS, Rules of Engagement has been that over the last four years.

The comedy, about the pitfalls and plateaus of love and marriage, started as a mid-season replacement in 2007, only to see

its starting year split in half by the 2008 writers strike. It returned as a mid-season show in 2009, and it does that again this year with a new season that started yesterday.

Being a regular part of the network’s starting line-up is the quest, but there are only so many spots available. That’s how the cast looks at the role they’ve been given with CBS.

“There’s nothing you can do about it,” says Oliver Hudson, who stars along with Patrick Warburton, Megyn Price, David Spade and Bianca Kajlich. “All we can do is come in here and do good shows. We try to make them as funny as we can.

“CBS knows what they get with us. We’ve provided them a certain

number over the last three years that they’re comfortable with. So I think we are sort of a utility player in a way.”

And just like a utility player for a baseball team, Hudson doesn’t hide that the cast and crew would love to have a starting spot on the CBS line-up. But he’s not dwelling on it.

“Everyone wants to start on the schedule in the fall and hopefully one day we’ll get that. But until then we are all just happy to be working actors,” Hudson says during an interview on the set.

The average network comedy produces 22 episodes in a year. The longest season for Rules of Engagement has been 15 episodes, and there have been only 35

episodes through three seasons, about half of what the total would be for a starting series.

What the show has managed to reveal in so few episodes is that it has the quirky buddy fun of How I Met Your Mother, the family humour of Everybody Loves Raymond and the relationship mania of ‘Til Death.

The humour comes from the odd mix of talent. There’s the dry comedy of Warburton and Spade, while Price and Kajlich give the show a comic bite. And then there’s sitcom virgin Hudson — son of Goldie Hawn and older brother to Kate Hudson — who calls being part of this ensemble an ideal situation.

“I had never done a sitcom

in my whole life and the format scared me,” Hudson says. “I had always thought acting was trying to portray a reality and the subtleties is what attracted me to being an actor. Then you come into this world and it’s not that. It’s heightened and you have to be big. But at the same time you have to walk that line because you don’t want to be an over-the-top actor.”

He figured with an acting resume that includes a lot of “cool guys” on shows like Dawson’s Creek, My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star and The Mountain, he’d be able to just step back and allow Spade and Warburton to handle the heavy comedy load. That didn’t happen and he’s had to deal with more broad comedy than he had expected.

When he realised he had to take such a big role, Hudson adapted and now feels comfortable with the sitcom format and playing a character who is “borderline stupid.”

That comfort has made Hudson a key part of the comedy team that’s made Rules of Engagement an ace reliever for CBS. — The Fresno Bee/MCT

Ten years is an eternity in pop culture. This is a truth that rings particularly loud in hip-hop — and when it

comes to female rappers, the clangs are positively deafening. This month sees Salt-N-Pepa’s first UK performance in 15 years — at the high profile hip-hop festival Bloc Weekend in the unexpected setting of Butlins Minehead — and a new album on its way.

The world they left behind could scarcely look more different. Comprising rappers Cheryl “Salt”

Wray and Sandy “Pepa” Denton, along with DJ Spindarella (Dee Dee Roper), Salt-N-Pepa rose to prominence in the late 1980s and went on to become the alpha females of 1990s pop: both musically, but also in their self-confident sexual politics, where they established a paradigm for a unique new feminism beating at the heart of pop culture.

After a decade of epochal singles (Push It, Let’s Talk About Sex, Shoop, Whatta Man, Twist and Shout, Do You Want Me — the list is remarkably long), Salt-N-Pepa

released their last studio album in 1997, a greatest hits album in 2000, and finally disbanded in 2002. So much of their vernacular is quintessentially old-school: they rap about funky rhymes, rocking the party, jamming, grabbing the mic. Injunctions to “dance, sucker” or “check out the fella with the high-top fade” seem almost quaintly old-fashioned now.

The same goes for the sonic minimalism that defined 1980s hip-hop, known as “boom-bap” — the sparse, straightforward, but emphatic onomatopoeia of

a hard bass-drum and a snare. BOOM. BAP. When Salt-N-Pepa used samples they were simple, concise snippets of guitar or synthesiser. It’s in stark contrast to the melodically complex, lush, multi-layered productions that underscored the great leap forward that was Noughties hip-hop, from Timbaland at the start of the decade to The-Dream at the end. If Salt-N-Pepa’s was a simpler time, the music certainly reflected that.

So how do a rap crew so steeped in the old school launch themselves back into 2010’s mainstream? The most comfortable route would be to play it safe by fetishising their heyday, revelling in kitsch nostalgia, selling commemorative reunion tour back-packs, and preserving the revered “four pillars of hip-hop” in lucite. Instead Salt-N-Pepa seem to be throwing caution to the wind and engaging with the hyperreal, multi-media trappings of late-Noughties pop culture: they started their comeback with their very own reality TV show.

Fourteen episodes of The Salt-N-Pepa Show have aired on VH1 in America, charting the group’s short but seemingly arduous journey through reforming and back into the limelight. The show has been enough of a hit for Let’s Talk About Pep to be commissioned, an ensemble show about four female friends and starring Denton. Launching last month in the States to great fanfare, the programme is billed as “Sex and the City for women of colour”.

Crass marketing aside, there is something very poetic about Salt-N-Pepa establishing another pop cultural landmark.

The Salt-N-Pepa Show is less poetic — a great promotional tool for their musical comeback this year, but full of the scarcely-believable “tensions” that guide the narrative arc of reality TV. Oh no, Pepa’s late for an important talk-show spot! Let’s find a boyfriend for Pepa! It’s not exactly their best work. Yet there has been one genuine and significant source of tension in the reformed group: Wray’s conversion to devout Christianity. It has led her to reassess some of the group’s more risque subject matter, and their comeback tour will see some (though it’s still not clear how many) of the group’s famously up-front lyrics changed to reflect Salt’s new-found faith.

One of the strangest parts of the relaunched Salt-N-Pepa empire is Pepa’s social networking site, also called Let’s Talk About Pep. This seems to be populated mostly by African-Americans in their thirties (of both genders) fondly recalling their — and the group’s — halcyon youth.

Tellingly, much of the discussion and reminiscences focus on the negative changes since the group went away: “Where have all the female rappers gone?” is one of the most prominent discussion threads, with the likes of Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah equally missed.

It has become received wisdom that a major millennial power-shift saw rap and R&B become the most anti-feminist music there is. Beyonce, in particular, is derided by feminists as the ultimate in male-objectification fantasies — but there is another interpretation, around the idea that black women

at the forefront of popular culture continue to — albeit subtly — subvert gender roles. Beyonce’s huge 2008 hit Single Ladies, ostensibly a re-establishment of modern woman as passive wife, is arguably pure parody — Beyonce is no longer a mortal woman but a cyborg, as her robot-arm in the video demonstrates.

In the words of the superb It’s Her Factory blog, “the song isn’t an ode to marriage and property and heterosexuality, it’s an Afrofuturist feminist critique of heterosexual courtship.”

Less controversial is the idea that, while Salt-N-Pepa may be the queens of 1990s rap, they cast a long shadow over everything related to hip-hop, women, and race in the Noughties. For good or ill, their robust feminism predicted and paved the way for much of the female presence in pop culture since 2000. Independent, one of the less-well-known tracks on their most political album, 1990’s Blacks’ Magic, begins with: “Try to diss my girl Salt, up goes my guard / Still feminine? Feminist still? Yes”.

In fact Independent perfectly pre-empts the masquerade of consumption-as-feminist-statement that has become the hallmark of the sisterhood in Noughties pop culture. The chorus runs “I am independent/ I make my own money so don’t tell me how to spend it/ Cos you need me, and I don’t need you”.

Exactly 10 years later, in 2000, Destiny’s Child’s Independent Women opened with a near-exact echo of this: “I buy my own diamonds and I buy my own rings/ Only ring your cell-y when I’m feeling lonely/ When it’s all over please get up and leave”.

Independent was given a limited release, reached only 85 in the American R&B charts, and failed to place in the main US chart; a decade later its heir, Independent Women, topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for 11 weeks.

Whether or not you buy the idea of Beyonce as a satirical feminist cyborg, the role of women in hip-hop and R&B in 2010 is definitely more complex than the pessimistic cliche of passive sex objects festooned with bling suggests.

Miami rapper Trina has made little impact in the UK, but her witty ramping up of sexual aggression and compelling lyrical delivery deserves the same mainstream audience she receives in the US; while New Yorker Nicky Minaj’s full debut, due in May, looks like being one of the highlights of the year.

Above all it is girl group Electrik Red who exemplify what is still possible. Backed by the sublimely rich production of the late Noughties zeitgeist, their debut album How To Be A Lady, Volume 1 combines sultry come-to-bed love songs, stomping party anthems, and headstrong, hilarious expressions of unabashed feminism. It’s a repertoire that seems strangely familiar.

Salt-N-Pepa sold more than 15mn records worldwide, and changed the face of hip-hop and feminism in one decade in the limelight; yet their greatest impact arguably came after they disappeared. Now they’re back, who knows what might happen. — The Independent

The rundown house at 41 Cumberland Road in Hong Kong’s quiet Kowloon Tong district might escape the notice of passers-by if it weren’t for a sign signalling that it

is a “love hotel”.Rooms are offered for rent by the hour,

with a discount rate of HK$205 (US $25) buying patrons three hours in a tatty room off a narrow hallway. It is a far cry from when the building was the home of kung fu icon Bruce Lee in the years before his untimely death in 1973 at the age of 32.

“The house has definitely been altered,” said Shannon Lee, the actor’s daughter, who

recalled snickering when she learned about the home’s status in her mid-teens.

The now 40-year-old Lee remembers, in glaring contrast to its current appearance, a Japanese-style pond out front, pets running around and plenty of exercise space for her father.

“I have very fond memories of it — my father definitely valued his privacy and there was space for him to work out and the kids to run around.”

The fact that guests walk in the footsteps of the kung fu star might have faded into the mists of time had it not been for fans who rallied behind a plan to turn the hotel into

a Lee memorial. Following a public uproar, billionaire owner Yu Pang-lin agreed to cancel plans to sell the property, which he says is worth HK$100mn, and instead donate it to honour Lee’s legacy.

Yu has said the home should be renovated to include a museum, library, a cinema and martial arts area.

Others, including Bruce Lee Club chairman Wong Yiu-keung, want the original floor plan preserved so visitors can imagine how it looked when the actor lived there.

“It should be a memorial house. After all it’s his former residence,” Wong said.

Lee — who was credited with catapulting the martial arts film genre into the mainstream with films including Fists of Fury and the posthumously released Enter the Dragon — died after a severe reaction to pain medication.

His widow, now living in the US, has provided a rough blueprint of the home’s original layout to help restoration efforts.

“My mom is definitely behind it,” Shannon Lee said.

“I’m really in favour of (the memorial). It could be great for Hong Kong and great for my father and his legacy. I think the primary

goal should be to preserve the house as much as possible to its original condition. “The draw of this space was that it was his home,” she added. “That makes it very unique.”

A local design contest ended last month, but the memorial’s final look, building costs, who will pay them and when it opens remain unclear. The tourism board is hoping the attraction can draw visitors from inside and outside the city, and boost Hong Kong’s hard-hit film industry.

A statue of Lee sits on Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars, but the daily South China Morning Post has described the lack of a more significant memorial to the Hong Kong-raised hero as a “travesty”. — AFP

Taking advantage of warmer seas, fur seals from the Galapagos Islands have established a full-fledged colony on the Pacific Coast of Peru, some 1,500km from their

normal habitat, local scientists say.Though the fur seals have been spotted

sporadically for several years along the northwest coast of South America, the scientists in the last few months have gathered evidence adult seals are mating and having babies in Peru.

Carlos Yaipen-Llanos, a veterinarian and marine biologist at the Orca research center in Peru, believes climate change has allowed the fur seals to expand beyond their traditional home.

“This is a unique species that used to live exclusively in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador,” he said after luring a baby out of a cave on the rocky island by barking to imitate its parents’ calls.

“The scientific importance of the Galapagos fur seals establishing a resident colony in Peru is that the animals have extended their range and found a new

habitat. This is associated with warmer water temperatures.”

According to data from Peru’s geophysics institute, water temperature readings taken every January over the last decade near Isla Foca have varied from 17oC in 2000 to 23oC last month. Temperatures in the Galapagos are around 25oC.

The colony of about 30 fur seals lives on Isla Foca, a tiny island populated by birds such as blue-footed gaviotas and pelicans, along with another larger mammal, the South American sea lion. The craggy island is near the city of Paita, about 1,100km north of Lima, Peru’s capital.

The Galapagos fur seal is believed to be the smallest of its kind in the world, with an adult male weighing about 50kg and 1.6m in length. They move fast in the water, but waddle slowly on land — across jagged ledges covered in white bird droppings that give the whole area the pungent smell of ammonia.

Galapagos fur seals tend to feed at night in the open seas and are smaller than sea lions, which grow to 2.8m in length. Some marine biologists said the fur seals Yaipen-Llanos

has been observing might in fact be another species, the South American fur seal, which thrives in Chile and Southern Peru, where upwelling in the chilly Humboldt Current creates the world’s most productive fishery.

“Unless genetic evidence is provided, I don’t think anyone can claim with much substance that these are Galapagos animals,” Fritz Trillmich, a biologist at Germany’s Bielefeld University who studies fur seals, said by e-mail.

But Yaipen-Llanos, who is still analysing

genetic data for release later this year, said the Galapagos fur seals have noticeably louder and higher pitched calls than South American fur seals, as well as different colouring, stature, fur, anatomy and behaviours that he has seen in the field and on rescues of injured animals.

“The Galapagos fur seal is highly specialised. It often feeds on squid and mollusks typical of warmer temperatures, while the South American fur seal eats cold water species like anchovies,” he said.

Northern Peru, popular with tourists because of its exposure to equatorial waters, sits near where the Humboldt Current veers west away from the continent. It is an unpredictable region, where severe weather anomalies develop in years of El Nino, the periodic spiking of equatorial water temperatures in the Pacific.

The island appears to be affected by two phenomena — a broader warming trend and El Ninos.

“That area of Peru is especially susceptible to temperature variation, with the interface between (cold and warm) currents moving back and forth,” said Bill Patzert, an oceanographer at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Lab in California.

When a strong El Nino forms in the central Pacific, easterly winds can overtake weakening westerly ones and send warmer waters east to slam into the South American coast, right around Ecuador and Northern Peru.

During a robust El Nino, rains can cause floods along Peru’s desert coast and its anchovy stocks plummet as phytoplankton levels drop in the sea. The current El Nino has caused some flooding, but is weaker than the severe anomaly of 1997/1998 that triggered catastrophes globally.

Sara Purga, a biologist at Peru’s Instituto del Mar, a government run marine lab, said average sea surface temperatures near Isla Foca have risen over the last five decades.

“This warming could generate the arrival (in Peru) of tropical species from Ecuador, mainly species such as turtles, tropical birds and colorful fish that we don’t have,” she said.

For Yaipen-Llanos, the Galapagos fur seal’s move into a new habitat suggests swifts changes are occurring in the Earth’s environment, with or without El Nino.

He wonders if fur seals from the Galapagos, where Charles Darwin collected evidence for his theory of evolution, will establish other colonies on the coasts of Peru, Ecuador or Colombia. “With warming up along the continent, the likelihood increases that more colonies of Galapagos fur seals could be set up here,” Yaipen-Llanos said. — Reuters
