The glamorous and ill-fated Romanov Dynasty is the

focus of this exceptional Russian journey. Begin

in Moscow and see the iconic sights of Red Square

on a walking tour. Before public hours at the Kremlin, visit

the Armory Museum with its tsarist treasures and the best of

the Romanov jewels; then view the frescoed interiors of the

15th-century cathedrals. By special arrangement, enter the

Grand Kremlin Palace. Board the luxurious Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express and awaken in Russia’s “Third Capital,”

Kazan, where you will see its eclectic kremlin. Continue on

your rail journey to Yekaterinburg, where the tragic end to

the Romanov family will be illuminated with visits during

two days. Fly to beautiful St. Petersburg for four nights in

this city of canals. View the astounding art collection at

the Hermitage after hours. Travel to nearby Tsar’s Village

to enter Alexander Palace, the last home of Nicholas II, and

Catherine Palace, with its Amber Room. See the fountains

of Peterhof, the Russian Versailles, and enjoy a farewell dinner

Friday, May 3 Upon arrival in Moscow, transfer to the deluxe Ritz-Carlton in the historic center and overlooking the golden cupolas and red-brick towers of the Kremlin. A late afternoon walking tour of nearby Red Square will introduce you to St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Tomb, and the GUM department store. Gather this evening for a welcome reception and dinner at the hotel.

Saturday, May 4 Today is devoted to the Kremlin. Begin with a before-hours tour of the Armory Museum, displaying tsarist thrones and coaches. At the Diamond Fund, see the most spec-tacular of the Romanov jewels. After a traditional lunch, view the frescoes at the 15th-century Assumption and Annunciation Cathedrals. By special arrangement, enter the Grand Kremlin Palace, with its magnificent reception halls of St. George, St. Vladimir, and St. Andrew (pending the Kremlin’s schedule of events). Continue to Terem Palace to see the living quarters of Ivan the Terrible. This evening, attend a ballet or opera at the beautiful Bolshoi Theater, newly restored. Dinner is at leisure. Sunday, May 5 Following a morning lecture, visit the Romanov Chambers located in the historic district of Zaryadye. One of Moscow’s first museums, the palace illustrates the domestic life of the Romanov nobles and is the birthplace of Mikhail, the first Romanov tsar. After lunch, continue to the Old Tretyakov Gallery, which displays an extraordinary collection of Russian art, ranging from 12th-century icons to 20th-century paintings. Step into the adjacent St. Nicholas Church to view its famed “Lady of Vladimir” icon, and enjoy a private performance of choral music. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon. The evening is at leisure.

Monday, May 6 This morning is unscheduled. You may wish to enjoy the amenities of the hotel or return to Red Square to see Lenin’s Tomb or stroll through GUM. After checking out of the hotel, explore the famous Metro on a guided tour, with stops at some of the most celebrated stations. Continue to the Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery, the resting place of many of Russia’s most famous artists, writers, and politicians. Then board the luxurious Golden Eagle train for a two-night journey. Dinner this evening is served in the beautifully appointed restaurant car.

Tuesday, May 7 Awake in Kazan, Russia’s “Third Capital.” Founded in the 11th century, it is one of Russia’s oldest centers of culture, science, and trade. An architectural tour introduces you to Kazan’s enormous and eclectic kremlin, including the Kul-Sharif Mosque, one of the largest in Europe, and the 16th-century Annunciation Cathedral. Enjoy tea with faculty and students of Kazan University, followed by a concert of Tatar folk music. Rejoin Golden Eagle in time for a late lunch. As the train travels east to Yekaterinburg, relax in the lounge and watch the passing scenery. Dine with fellow travelers tonight in the elegant restaurant car.

Wednesday, May 8 Arrive in Yekaterinburg this morning and disembark from Golden Eagle. An orientation tour of this city, which borders Europe and Asia, begins at the historic square and continues to the vibrant theater district. Yekaterinburg is the birthplace of Boris Yeltsin, the first Russian President, and you will also see sights connected with him. Check in to the Hyatt Regency, your home for the next two nights. Following lunch, visit the city’s borderline, decorated with semi-precious stones from the Ural mountains. Dinner this evening features regional Ural cuisine.

Thursday, May 9 The morning is dedicated to the final days of Nicholas, Alexandra, and their children. Begin at the Russian Orthodox Church on the Spilled Blood in Honor of All Saints, recently built and dedicated to the last tsar’s family. Below the main sanctuary is a memorial museum, whose cellar is the site of their execution in 1918. Drive to the outskirts of the city to visit Ganina Yama, where the remains of the royal family were discovered in 1991. At lunch, meet an anthropologist who participated in the excavation and recovery work here. Visit Yekaterinburg’s art museum to see Kasli moulding (cast-iron sculpture) and the history museum to view the Shigir Idol, the oldest known wooden sculpture in the world. Dinner is at leisure.

Saturday, May 11 At breakfast, historian Dr. Zoya Belyakova presents a lecture on the Romanov Dynasty. Travel to an island in the Neva River to see the Peter and Paul fortress and cathedral. Topped by an angel cupola, the cathedral is the resting place of Peter the Great and subsequent tsars. The remains of Nicholas II and his family were also placed here in a chapel on the 80th anniversary of their deaths. Continue to the gold-domed St. Isaac’s Cathedral to view its elaborate interior, decorated with intricate mosaic icons and columns of malachite and lapis lazuli. Following lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. This evening, you are invited for an after-hours visit to the Hermitage with its astounding collections. A highlight is the French Impressionist works. Dinner is at an elegant restaurant.

Sunday, May 12 Drive outside the city to Peterhof, built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles. See the Grand Palace and admire the Grand Cascade, a series of bronze sculptures and fountains. Then visit the Cottage Palace, a favorite residence of Nicholas I. Continue to Mon Plaisir Palace or perhaps try to outsmart the trick fountains of the lower gardens. Return to St. Petersburg by hydrofoil. Following lunch, the balance of the afternoon is at leisure. This evening, attend a performance at the world-renowned Mariinsky Theater.

Monday, May 13 Travel to “Tsar’s Village” for a morning visit to Alexander Palace, famous for being the last home of Tsar Nicholas II. At the Baroque Catherine Palace, see the exquisite Amber Room; the original treasure was lost in World War II and it has been painstakingly reconstructed based on black-and-white photos. Then stroll in the palace’s formal gardens. Lunch with entertainment is at lively Podvorye, a restaurant

in a traditional log house. Upon returning to St. Petersburg, the remainder of the afternoon is unscheduled. Celebrate this memorable trip with a festive farewell dinner at Russian Empire, one of the city’s finest restaurants and located in the former palace of Count Stroganoff.

HEALTH All participants must be in good health. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) and AAA. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfares, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change without notice. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual.

RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of AYA is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations, and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, AYA, and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or AYA and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages, or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature, or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or AYA. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. AYA and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or AYA to be in the best interest of the participant’s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants.

CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; train charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses; and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of the Association of Yale Alumni, and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; AYA shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AYA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor AYA shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or AYA, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer. Upon payment of the deposit to AAA, the participant agrees to be bound by the above terms and conditions.
