A RECAP OF THE 2014 ABWA NATIONAL CONFERENCE

AN AWARD & RECOGNITION FOR ONE OF OUR OWN:

Congratulations to Ms. Sheryl Olguin, who

was honored at our fifth annual holiday gala

as one of our most dedicated and

accomplished members! One of the tenets

of ABWA is to recognize women who have

achieved personal and professional

excellence. Sheryl, a long standing member

of ABWA Oceanside, has achieved

international acclaim as a singer and

songwriter, and has survived non-hodgkins

lymphoma cancer.

The talented Sheryl blends folk, blues,

rock and adult contemporary styles like a

good chef blends international cuisines.

Her vocals range from gentle soothing folk

to powerful blues. Sheryl's music career

spans 30 years, 4 record labels (including

her own), and airplay from Japan to the

United Kingdom.

As a business woman, Sheryl is Director

of Operations at Naviscent where she has

successfully managed major engagements

for clients such as DHL, MTV, Disney, NBC-

Universal, Warner Brothers, Cisco/WebEx,

University of Phoenix, Johnson & Johnson,

and other name brands across a number of

verticals. Her background includes extensive

experience in Information Technology (IT)

and business management with key

emphasis on User Experience Research &

Design, Web and Mobile Applications,

Enterprise Software, Internet, Interactive

Digital Television, audio and video

production.

Sheryl has graciously shared her talent

with Oceanside Charter year after year, and

we are thankful, as well as honored to have

her as a member of our chapter. Sheryl Olguin

Anita Carbone, Sheryl Glore and Sue Tyson-

Parker attended the 2014 ABWA National

Leadership Conference in Overland Park, KS, Oct

29 – Nov 1 representing the Oceanside Charter

Chapter. This was an action-packed conference

where national officers were elected, chapter

awards were presented and the 2015 Business

Woman of ABWA was announced. This

conference was also special because it was the

65th Annual ABWA Conference and was held in

Overland Park, KS which is ABWA National

Headquarters. Each day attendees heard

inspirational keynote speakers, attended valuable

training classes and networked with other ABWA

members from across the country.

Jenna Bush Hager gave a powerful keynote on

making a difference. She shared the most

important advice

she received from

her father, which

was to be honest,

tell the truth, be

kind, and that every

successful life

includes service to

others. Jenna also

shared her passion

about education, believing it has the power not

only to change the trajectory of a life, but to also

save a life. As an education correspondent for

NBC, she witnessed this in action while

documenting the lives of mothers and children in

Latin America which resulted in her book, Ana's

Story.

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, Lt Col (Ret) US

Army, gave an inspirational keynote on living a

legacy. She grew up poor in a very in a very rough

neighborhood with strict immigrant parents as one

of 10 siblings. Her father taught the family that if

people don't serve this country they cannot take

from this country and, as a result, 8 of her siblings

are veterans. She explained that people can gain

much from the younger generation, as they have a

different way of getting things done and people

should step back and learn. She also advised that

if women want to succeed, surround themselves

with smart people and let them do their job. One

important piece of advice was, if a person wants to

change the rules, they have to sit at the table. In

other words, don’t sit in the background and

complain about what isn’t working, sit at the table

where change is made.

The final keynote was

presented by Nina

Godiwalla, CEO of

Mindworks. She is also

the bestselling author of

“Suits: A Woman on

Wall Street,” and spoke

on diversity and

inclusion in the

workplace. She said it

takes small steps to

create a more inclusive environment, stressing

women must be aware of their mindset and not

treat people differently in subtle ways. As women

move higher up the corporate ladder, they acquire

more responsibility to speak up when they see

people being treated unjustly.

Educational opportunities at this conference

included MBA Essentials courses taught by

Kansas University, Women as 21st Century

Leaders courses taught by Park University and

courses focusing on personal skills such as how to

work with any personality, how to find your passion

and communication, customer service and

accountability. Sue Tyson Parker graduated from

Park University's Women as 21st Century Leaders

program.

The Oceanside Charter

Chapter was recognized

as a Best Practices Level

2 chapter. There were a

total of 54 Best Practice

awards presented

recognizing the best

chapters across the

country.

2014-2015 National Officers elected were:

Nancy Griffin, National President; Meg Bell,

National Vice President; Lisa Montross National

Sec-Treasurer and Gina Berry, District I Vice

President. Results of other district vice presidents

elections are available on WIN.

The Woman of the Year and Top Ten

Recognition Luncheon as well as the Hand of

Friendship Luncheon offered additional

opportunities for networking and recognition.

Maria Martinez from the Lakeland Downtown

Chapter was selected as the 2015 American

Business Woman.

This was an outstanding conference, a truly

worthwhile experience, and highly recommended

for all the members. The next opportunities are in

Safety Harbor, FL, April 16-18, 2015, for the

Eastern Regional Conference, and Albuquerque,

NM, Oct 15-17, 2015, for the 2015 National

Conference.

- Respectfully submitted by Sheryl Glore
