MESSAGE FROM THE CEO2014 has been an excellent year for DP World Karachi (QICT)in terms of volume and profitability. This is the first time inour terminal’s history that we have crossed the 900,000 teusmark by accomplishing a yearly throughput of 942,000 teus.We have also attained the No. 1 position amongst all theterminals in Pakistan. This could not have been possiblewithout your efforts. I thank you all for your continuedcommitment and all that you do to deliver on our yearlytargets. Other significant achievement is that for the first timein Pakistan we have handled ships of 335m LOA and 48mbeam.
The new year has brought its own mix of successes andchallenges but as long as we know what to do we can provideour customers with the best possible service’s and manageour costs in order to be more competitive in the market. Eachone of us needs to do our best resulting to bring about apositive change that would improve and impact our businessand our customers. We should always be thinking out of thebox and it is this strategy that has lead us to offer our servicesbeyond the gate e.g. Our NLCCT facility specifically meantfor customers needing their cargo in the city and the latestaddition is the dry port in Prem Nagar Lahore called DP WorldLahore which offers a complete door to door service via train.I am extremely pleased that this facility has grown leaps andbounds since railways have given us the locomotives andbogies and from a mere handling of 9 to 10 trains a month
we are now handling 22 to 25trains per month with volumesapprox. 2,500 teus and above.I would take this opportunity tothank each one of you for youreffort , hard work and commitmentto excellence that has resulted inus being the number 1 terminal inPakistan and hope to maintain thisposition during 2015.

It is the only terminal inPakistan where the customer has the option to clear his container from either DP World Karachior clear the same from our Off Dock container terminal ‘NLCCT’ located in the heart of the city. This is one of the main strategies that have boosted the throughput to over 900,000 teus.
This is the first time since 2009 that QICT has again achieved the No. 1 spot amongst all theterminals in Pakistan volume wise and also achieved our volume budget for 2014. We haveclosed the year as the leader in 2014 with QICT at 37% with 4% increase from 2013.
At NLC, we have handled over 4500 vehicles in 2014 as compared to 74 vehicles in 2013only. This has been possible view joint efforts of QICT marketing, lines and the freight forwarders.During 2015, we expect to handle more than 6,000 vehicles and have already started marketingto accomplish this task.

Karachi based consignee & shippers There are specific markets in Karachi city that prefer their cargo to be handled in Karachi city/KPT. They are:- Second hand clothing (Rags) - Chemicals - Waste paper - Scrap of all types -Tin plates - Cars - Second hand computers.
We move these customers’ cargo to our own Off Dock atKarachi’s Mai Kolachi Road – (2 kms from KPT). This facilityis operated by QICT. QICT moves containers to this facility inbond and consignee clears customs at this facility.
Similarly, some of the shippers prefer to handle their cargoat KPT due to close proximity to their factories /warehouses.We provide same facility to the shippers at NLCCT, they candeliver their export CFS or CY cargo to QICT Off Dock, clearcustoms and QICT moves this cargo in bond to QICT.

CMS - Complaint Management System, Management of DP World Karachi is pleased tobecome a winning country in SCO Innovative Contest.
CMS is integration from a manual system towards an automated complaint handling process that will segregate all the complaints department wise and will help us in observing all our processes from the customer's perspective.
CMS will eliminate all communication barriers between the terminal and our customers, and will provide regular feedback to them, that will strengthen DP World's relations with
its customers.
It will help us in analysing our complaints and will provide us with an opportunity to minimise the gaps in our system and to improve our internal processes simultaneously.
Customer will log on to the DP World’s website for any complaint or feedback. An authentic database of our customer will be simultaneously created from which we will
develop a CRM solution.
CMS will help assign deadlines to different complaints and that will determine the performance of individuals, shifts, and the entire terminal. Moreover if implemented on a regional basis CMS can help track the performance of terminals within the region.
In future, we are planning to take different kinds of requests from the customers online, through CMS, for which currently customers have to visit our terminal.
So, all in all CMS is innovative step with an aim to improve efficiency, streamlining ourprocesses and simplifying communications with our customers.

Performance CentricOperation
Improving Safety in the work environment is of critical importance
to DP World Karachi Engineering Department. To that effect,
a smart system was designed in-house to minimise container
collision on Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTG) during container
handling. It records intelligently the location at which the RTG
has placed containers and avoids the recorded heights when
moving containers above. The system is highly cost effective
and robust, requiring no additional components.
Smart Hoist and Trolley Control System for SafeOperation of RTG
Coordination between engineering andoperations is key to a productive containerterminal; to provide a top notch service toour customers, we, at DP World, Karachiengineering and operations, constantlymonitor equipment performance andresource utilisation through Key PerformanceIndicators such as Productivity and FuelConsumption etc. to maintain a highlyproductive outlook and provide a customercentric service. Assisting us in this endeavouris our indigenously designed and maintainedData Acquisition Network that runs overthe latest Wireless Technology and providesReal-time, on-demand data and parametersof equipment and their operators.
WTS was designed in house by our dedicatedengineers and is meant to calculate, record anddeliver data from any terminal equipment beit a Quay Crane, an RTG, a Reach Stacker oran Empty Handler to a mobile phone and acomputer. This system enhances Quay Craneand RTG performance by improving productivityalong with reduction in diesel consumption, carbon footprints and man machine interfacing. This is a very economical and cost effectiveinnovation, as unit cost US$110 is 70% lessthan a Radio Frequency Modem and an ordinaryPLC GSM Modem available in industrial markets.
Wireless TelemetrySystem (WTS)
The world we live in is unique; the one of its kind that we know of. The engineering departmentat DP World Karachi is constantly striving to reduce the carbon footprint of the terminal, sothat our world remains the way we like it, healthy and clean. To achieve this goal, we haveinstalled all RTGs with smaller, more efficient main engines. They consume less fuel andproduce less waste in their operation. Furthermore, all RTGs are fitted with an Auxiliary BackupEngine which is even more fuel efficient. This small engine takes over when the Crane is idle, powering only ancillary systems for the RTG and Crane, such as climate control, lights andsafeties etc. Procedures and smart change-over functionality has also been incorporated tomaximise the Auxiliary Engine time in order to reduce fuel consumption.

Anybody found violating the rule will be charged Rs.200/-fine. Notices have been pasted on entrance/egress gates, shuttle stops, examination areas andHelpdesk building. This is the first step in this regard as this is a long-term and ongoing project.Apart from fine our CSR team will be working with QHSE&T to create awareness on dangerousside of using Paan/Gutka so the message get through the users and have impact. Details/progresswill follow in next newsletter.
As we always say that safety is part ofour DNA, it will not and cannot becompromised. Following the footstepsof GSE, SCO region has decided toadopt the proactive approach andprepare their own Safety EngagementProgrammes which includes Light MotorVehicle (LMV), Personal ProtectiveEquipment (PPE), Signages and ForkLifter. Speed ChecksWe at DP World Karachi follow strict traffic rules specially the speed limit which is 20 Km/hr.In every shift random speed checks are done and reported at the end of shift. The Trailers/vehiclesviolating the speed limits are reported to operations department which further send an emailto Contractor's representative to deduct the Safety Allowance from the salary of that particulardrivers. This is now daily practice and we are getting good results.
World Water DayWorld Water day is celebrated across the globe on 22nd March every year. DP World also celebratesthis day and this year the theme chosen for World Water Day was “Use Water Wisely”.
DP World, Karachi has involved all its employees to participate through social media by clickingsnaps showing DP World theme “Use Water Wisely”. Pictures were posted on DP World KarachiFacebook page and the maximum hits/likes got the award.
To create an impact another long-term initiative has been taken by QHSE&T and CSR. Asrecently GSE has reported that consumption of water in buildings is 54 percent across DP Worldterminals. So we have decided to work on that. A team will be formed whose main target willbe to reduce the consumption of potable water in buildings. Each member of the team will beallocated a floor or space wherein he / she monitor and suggest ways to reduce usage. Floormeters to measure the actual consumption area wise will be installed. We intend to measurethe present water consumption and then compare it on monthly basis. Our target will be anoverall reduction of 2% till March 2016. Details/progress will follow in next newsletter.
