NOVEMBER 2018

President’s Message

The Temperatures are falling, and snowflakes have been spotted! I was up early Sunday morning, Oct 21st, outside with my new puppy, and looked around with much enthusiasm, to see snowflakes falling in Blacksburg. Several ski resorts in New England and the west have already opened. Whoop, Whoop! to all you snow lovers out there.

The cold nights remind me that the holidays are right around the corner, and there is much to be

thankful for in our lives. Did you know there are over 400 homeless children in Roanoke City

Public Schools? Last year the Roanoke Ski Club provided 138 brand new warm winter coats to

area children. Several board members delivered the coats to Dr. Rita Bishop, Roanoke City

School Superintendent at the Administration Offices in early January, and 30 coats were handed

out the very next day! This thank you came from Justin McLeod, Community Relations

Coordinator at RCPS's: "We are truly blessed to live in such a caring community. Please express

my gratitude to all the members who participated in this worthy cause."

Your RSC is once again partnering with Operation Warm, to give a child who has so little, a gift

that will keep them warm and help boost their self-confidence all winter long. Our goal this year is

to donate 200 coats to help ensure our students are warm, healthy, and safe, so they can be in

school learning. Please click the Operation Warm link below to help us meet our goal for this very

worthy cause. It is very easy to donate online. We will also take checks at our Sports and

Wellness Membership Meeting Expo on November 7th, at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood.

With gratitude,

Marla Kemsey

2018 - 2019 TRIPS

Response to our trip lineup has been great but we still have some openings! Beach Week at

Kiawah Island again this year was very successful – see Pat's write up in this newsletter.

Our two African Safari trips and the Amsterdam Rhine River cruise are sold out with wait lists. But

we still have a few spaces on our ski trips-- but this won't be for long. Snow is hitting the ground

out west and as our weather turns here on the East Coast I suspect remaining spaces will fill

quickly. So, if you want to go on an always successful Western Ski Trip or our fabulous Alpe

d'Huez trip with the option for Paris, please sign up as soon as possible so you won't be left home

wishing you had gone. Just contact the trip leader. No deposit required to get on a wait list, but

you must be a club member!

SUMMARY: KIAWAH ISLAND, SC BEACH TRIP

We had a great time and beat the odds again with a hurricane. It seems we have either followed or

preceded hurricanes in the past, but this time, it occurred during our stay and we were not affected

very much. Whew!!!

Nineteen of us enjoyed another wonderful time on Kiawah Island. All arrived safely and enjoyed a

Welcome Happy Hour and dinner at one of our houses. During our stay, we all had plenty to do

between walking, biking, enjoying the beach, the ocean, the pool, golf, shopping, kayaking, and

touring. Yes, all that packed into four fun packed days.

Our golfers were rained out on Wednesday due to hurricane rains in

the morning, but most enjoyed a beautiful, sunny afternoon on the

beach playing Bocce Ball. Not to worry, Friday morning the golfers

had a fantastic weather day to get in their 18 holes. Thanks, Tony for

getting all the arrangements done for the golfers.

On Thursday, we all caravanned to Low Tide Brewing for a Happy Hour

tasting with catered appetizers. Everyone had a good time, especially

the three

Birthday gals that were celebrating that

week. We surprised Dene Hoffman, Barbara

Thurman, and Jill Beeson with a birthday

cake for dessert.

On Friday, several of us had a great

experience kayaking on the river with our

tour guide. Barbara got a quick lesson and

did wonderfully with her first experience at

kayaking. The weather was epic, and the

river was calm at high tide.

Our resident ocean rider was

Al Durham, who taught several

of us to ride the waves between

the breakers.

Awesome experience!

Visit a Master Boot Fitter and Ski Better!

(and get 10% off at our new retail partner!)

So, what do skiers do when it’s 90 degrees outside and a holiday? On Labor Day, Melinda and I took a

3½-hour trip to Northern Virginia, where we had an appointment with a master boot fitter to buy new ski

boots! Our boots were almost 10 years old, so we abandoned them at Alpe d’Huez in March.

One of our tour operators recommended Brian Deely, who owns Pro-Fit Ski in Leesburg, VA. Pro-Fit has

been a Certified Member of America’s Best Boot Fitters for over 15 years. We figured that for an

investment in comfortable ski boots that fit right and will last 10+ years, it would be worth the drive. We

were right! Brian spent over 3 1/2 hours with us to make sure we walked out with great-fitting boots that

he recommended given our skiing level and aggressiveness, foot size, stance, comfort preference, and

other factors. Brian’s shop has high-tech equipment to ensure a proper fit that most ski boot retailers

don’t have.

The visit was well worth it, and we both ended up with incredible-fitting boots. Melinda’s even have built-

in heaters.

After having gone through this experience, it’s hard to fathom how anyone buys a ski boot - possibly the

most important piece of equipment - without going to see someone who knows how to make the boot

work for you!

Pro-Fit will give 10% off to Roanoke Ski Club members. Check out their website at https://pro-fitski.com/

and the next time you are in the market for boots be sure to make an appointment with Brian!
