30th Sunday in Ordinal Time
October 28, 2018 Son of David, have pity on me!
Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever
escaped your lips? Today's Gospel
tells the story of a blind man with a
difficult lot in life. He made a living
by begging coins off passing travelers. When word
reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is
when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears
Bartimaeus' cry and beckons him forward.
What do you want me to do for you? Last week,
Jesus asked a similar question to James and John.
Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus'
response is much humbler. Lord, I want to see.
How strange this interaction must have seemed to the
onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to
see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us
what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our
hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By
asking James and John to name their ambition, their
selfishness is exposed to them and to the other
disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing,
his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites
participation in our own redemption. He doesn't save
us without us!
Take some time in silent prayer today. Place
yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine
yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus
is calling you! When you stand before him, his focus
is on you and you alone. What do you want me to
do for you? he asks. Search your heart. How would
you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking
you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore.
May we, too, be sent!
Go ... your faith has saved you.

The Hope and Promise of Redemption The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the
end of the Babylonian exile. He
describes how the weak and sorrowful
people now return with joy. These are
the scattered people of God: the blind
and the lame, the mothers and pregnant
women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no
one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are
on all these weak and broken people.
Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely
poetic images of God’s love and care for us. Those
that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. Although
they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be
sown, they shall come back rejoicing, carrying
their sheaves (Ps 126:5–6). Although God had to
punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot
them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back
to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be
joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the
promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far
corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

We remember . . . In your charity,
please remember all those who have died,
especially: Edward Iwanowski, William Murtha,
James Matthias, all who will die today,
and those who have no one to pray for them.
Resting in Paradise.
Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord.
And let Perpetual Light Shine upon them.
When a Catholic is cremated,
must the ashes be buried
or can they be scattered or kept in the home? More people are choosing cremation for the final
disposition of the deceased. In the past, cremation
was rare for a Catholic and the cremains were not
brought into church for the funeral. Now both the
Catechism of the Catholic Church (§ 2301) and
canon law (Canon 1176, § 3) allow for cremation.
The cremains are to be placed in consecrated
ground or inside a mausoleum. The church has a
reverence and respect for the body as a place where
the soul had resided. Leaving the ashes on the mantel
or scattering them in some significant spot is
contrary to church practice and belief. © 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc

Immediately the blind man received his sight
and followed Jesus on the way.
On Mission For The Church Alive! Jesus Is Calling You – In today’s Gospel, Jesus
calls for the blind man, Bartimaeus, that he might
come to him and be healed. Saint Mark relates to us
very vividly that Bartimaeus, threw aside his cloak,
sprang up, and came to Jesus, and that his sight
was restored because of his faith and trust in God. Of
course, we see many instance in the Gospels of Jesus
calling out to others. Often times he calls people to
follow him, like those who would be his Apostles.
At other times, like his encounter with Zacchaeus, he
calls out so that he might stay with Zacchaeus and be
of support in his life. In the Church, we most likely
think of calling as one’s vocation, listening for what
purpose God has created us to know, love and serve
him. Priests speak of their vocation, or calling, to
holy orders and married couples talk of being called
love each other with a sacrificial, unbreakable and
unconditional love. And within the call of our
vocation, the Lord time and again calls out to us to
invite us to share our gifts and abilities in a variety
of ways for the good of others and of the Church. As
our On Mission for The Church Alive! journey
continues forward we are all invited to listen for the
Lord calling us by name and seeking new and
vibrant ways to respond in faith and generosity. Visit
onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay
informed.

Open-ended questions can’t be answered with a
simple yes or no. For example: How have you
changed in the last year? What are your biggest
worries about the future? What do you find exciting
in life right now?

When families work well, jobs are shared
according to age, ability, and interest. Just for fun,
why not shake it up once in awhile. Try trading jobs.
You just might learn something new.
A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar
When Jesus asked the blind man What do you
want from me? he asked for sight. If Jesus asked
you the same question, what would you say? Okay,
that is your prayer.
Once we learn to pray with our hearts,
and not just our lips; we truly begin
to have a conversation with God.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of the Sick is for healing and
strength. Through anointing and prayer the whole
Church commends those who are ill to the suffering
and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and
save them. The Church urges the People of God to
freely unite themselves to the Passion and death of
Christ.
The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for
only those who are at the point of death. As soon as
anyone begins to be in danger of death from illness
or age, the fitting time to receive this sacrament has
certainly already arrived.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be
celebrated after all the Sunday Masses, the second
Sunday of the Month. Anyone wishing to be
anointed are invited to come forward after Mass and
share in this rich sacrament. All are welcome to
share in the Sacrament of Healing.
Offertory Collection Envelopes A question was raised
concerning Offertory Envelopes.
Offertory Envelopes can be placed in the offertory
collection at any of the three parishes, Saint Mark,
Saint Michael, Queen of the Rosary. The counters
will separate and sort the offertory envelopes, then
the offertory envelopes will be returned to the proper
parish for deposit and recording.
Treasures From Our Tradition Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England
and Wales, the first representative body of many
Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and
1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them
died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near
today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first
to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to
swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme
head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint
Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland.
The method of execution was particularly vile, since
the condemned were hanged and their living bodies
quartered to be displayed around London as a
horrific warning.
Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of
a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the
martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the
bustling city, a monastic community of women
practices contemplative prayer and “spiritual
hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the
community is French in origin; it was expelled from
France a century ago when France outlawed
contemplative monastic life. England, where the
laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the
community in. In gratitude to their new homeland,
and in honor of those who gave their lives for the
Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the
public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350
martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at
www.tyburnconvent.org.uk. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Daily Bread, Celebration Publications Monday, October 29; Eph 4:32-5:8; Lk 13:10-17
Be kind to one another. Today’s passage from the
letter to the Ephesians reads like a series of grandma’s
samplers — Mom wisdom that could be summed up, Just
get along for goodness sake! Living with two boys and
their pile of Lego blocks is a homely illustration of why
world peace isn’t yet. (Be kind to one another.) The
incessant cry of, That’s mine! (Greed must not even be
mentioned among you.) And when they are getting along
and don’t know I’m listening. (No obscenity or silly or
suggestive talk) Thank goodness it’s more silly than
suggestive at this point. Applying the lessons of Scripture
to family life is challenging. On the other hand, what
better lessons are there? Jesus, Savior and Brother, help
us live as children of the light. Paige Byrne Shortal
Tuesday, October 30; Eph 5:21-33; Lk 13:18-21
What is the kingdom of God like? Today’s first
reading is what I call a nudger. Read a few lines and
watch husbands playfully nudge their wives. Read a few
more lines and watch the wives nudge back. It’s a tricky
reading and if you will, please allow me to offer a bit of
advice to the preacher: Unless you are willing to do your
homework, please don’t go there. You could do more
harm than good. Moving on to the Gospel, so what is the
kingdom like? Small, unassuming beginnings that flourish
into what none could have imagined. And note that good
old Luke does his parallel thing with an example of a man
planting a seed and a woman leavening her bread. How
lovely. We don’t know when just a little effort at the right
time in the right place will yield abundant blessings. Ever
-living God, give us the grace of mature faith,
enlightened by scholarship, inspired by the saints of all
times and places. Paige Byrne Shortal
Wednesday, October 31; Eph 6:1-9; Lk 13:22-30
I do not know where you are from. Over the years our
children have worn all sorts of Halloween masks. A
parent’s prayer is that, at the end of the day, they will take
them off. You see, none of us is an angel or a devil; a
super hero or one of the walking dead; perfect beyond
needing help or flawed beyond the help helping. We are
put on this Earth to discover our true face and that true
face reveals something of the divine. When that true face
remains masked by pain, addiction, desperation, fear,
disappointment, unreasonable expectations, then that one
and only beautiful face may never be discovered. And this
is a tragedy, first because the world is poorer if that
unique face of the divine is never revealed. And also
because, when we finally meet our God, we may hear,
You aren’t the person I created you to be … I don’t
know you.Creator God, we pray, strip us of all that is
not of you. Paige Byrne Shortal

All Saints: I had a vision of a great multitude, which
no one could count, from every nation, race, people,
and tongue. John’s vision, as described in the Book of
Revelation, reminds me of Flannery O’Connor’s short
story, Revelation. Mrs. Turpin, who prides herself on her
own propriety, has an unwelcome vision of all the folks
she has deemed less than herself heading toward heaven,
and not in the stately manner she imagines such an
entrance deserves, but shouting and clapping and
leaping like frogs. Amazing how we think we are so
different from others. And yet if one compares that
imagined difference to the difference between me and
God ... well then, no human is all that different from
another. Not a bad thing to remember as we gaze around
at our fellow saints. We may as well get used to each
other — hopefully we will have eternity together.
Holy God, I want to say, Make me a saint, but that’s a
bit scary; so instead I pray, please make me want to be
a saint. Paige Byrne Shortal
Friday, Nov. 2; Wis 3:1-9; Rom 5:5-11; Mt 25:31:46
All Souls: What you did not do for one of the least of
these, you did not do for me. In a talk I once heard, John
Carr, then executive director for the U.S. Bishops’ Office
of Justice, Peace and Human Development, said that
Matthew 25 is the only place in the Gospels where we are
told what we need to do to get to heaven. His assertion
stuck with me. Even if it is exaggerated a bit, one can’t
deny that Jesus seems very clear about this message. Jesus
identifies with those who are in need and judges those
who could meet the need. Perhaps there were implied
exclusions, but I honestly can’t find them. Nothing about
the needy being one of our own or worthy or legal. It is
something to think about on this All Souls Day. What life
will bring us a sense of satisfaction as we prepare to cross
the great divide? Generous God, show me the way to be
a person for others. Paige Byrne Shortal
Saturday, November 3; Phil 1:18-26; Lk 14:1-11
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
In the last two years, I have been blest to travel. There are
things that make for a good journey, whether to another
place or the journey through life. The first is obviously
preparation - one needs documents, reservations and
arrangements made for those at home. Unfortunately,
those who are best at preparation may not have another
necessary mindset to make the difference between a
terrible time and a great one - flexibility. Things happen:
changes in weather, canceled flights, miscommunications.
Traveling light is necessary. Perhaps as important as any
is the sense of wonder. God of all peoples in all places,
give me the grace to be mindful of others and welcome
all you place on my path. Paige Byrne Shortal
