WelcomeThe Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is situated on the water’s edge halfway between Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican. We have magnificent sea views over the Sound, with three city marinas close by.

We are an active sailing club and the tireless efforts of our members in recent years means we are able to offer competition all year round. There is a good slipway and a secure dinghy park which is home to a fleet of boats available for hire, as well as a private harbour where yachts can dry out.

The clubhouse has excellent facilities, but our ‘jewel in the crown’ is The View Restaurant where you may enjoy fine food and stunning scenery. The ballroom, with its own large bar, has the same magnificent views as does the sun terrace.

Most spectacular of all is our RPCYC viewing lounge - The Armada Room - with its elevated position providing a panoramic vista over the whole of the harbour.

Our food and our service have gained such a fine reputation that we have become a popular venue for weddings, parties and business functions.

h You do not have to be a sailor to enjoy all we have to offer. Many members join simply for the social side, enjoying the camaraderie and warm welcome guaranteed at our friendly club which surely boasts one of the loveliest locations in the south of England. Come and take a look for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

A brief history

The first recorded use of the site where our club now stands was in 1688, it being closely associated with the construction of the Royal Citadel.

Plymouth town had held out throughout the English Civil War against the Royalists and this was not forgotten when Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660. It was claimed the Citadel was built as much to dominate Plymouth town as to protect our foreshores from foreign invasion.

Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club was founded in 1877 in premises in the town. It was formed to promote local sailing and rooms were rented at West Hoe and on Plymouth pier to conduct our club’s sailing events.

So successful did it prove that we were granted the status of a Royal Yacht Club in 1886 and were able to add the Royal prefix to our name. This was followed in 1893 by being awarded permission to fly the Blue Ensign.

The growth of the club was such that new premises were needed so in 1896 our present clubhouse was acquired. After some alterations (including the constructing of accommodation for a live-in steward) all club activities were transferred to the site around the turn of the century, though the freehold of the land did not become ours until 1936.

Not all members approved of the move, however. Breakaway groups remained at West Hoe (to form the now defunct Royal South Western Yacht Club) and on Plymouth pier to form the Plymouth Division of the Minima Yacht Club, also now defunct.

A brief history (continued)

Our club originally arranged racing for three classes of yachts and in 1902 pioneered dinghy racing in Plymouth Sound. It progressed until sailing was interrupted by the First World War, although social activities continued with officers of the Royal Flying Corps at Mount Batten as honorary members.

More and more classes were catered for on the water, including the prestigious J class followed by the twelve-metre boats. The Second World War brought about the closure of the club in 1940 and our premises were requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence.

It was not until two years after the end of the war that we really began to get back to normal and were able once again to offer a full sailing programme.

Since the 1940s many alterations have been made to the clubhouse. The live-in steward’s accommodation ceased to exist and the space gained by this enabled us to enlarge the function rooms and improve the kitchen and toilets.

Attention turned to improving the facilities outside in the 1950s and 1960s, with the club constructing first the slipway and then the dinghy park.

Major improvements came in 1997 with the help of a grant from the Sports Council. An extension was added to the existing building, which allowed us to add a restaurant, disabled access and toilets.

With a larger kitchen, new showers and toilets, committee rooms and a new race control, the work gave a much more spacious feel to the club and really put us on the map as one of the premier venues in the city for hosting functions and events. The extension was officially opened on Tuesday, October 21, 1997 by HRH The Princess Royal.

h In 2000 the club was officially licensed to carry out civil wedding ceremonies.

Sailing

We at Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club have gone to great lengths in recent years to encourage more people to become involved in sailing.

There is a fantastic spirit of co-operation between all the clubs in the Plymouth area with all pulling together for the greater good of growing our sport.

Those efforts have reaped their rewards and one achievement we have been particularly proud of has been in expanding the sailing calendar so that it now stretches from January right through to December.

Up until a few years ago there was little dinghy racing for sailors in the Plymouth area outside the spring and summer months. We all know that once sailing is in your blood there is a thirst for competition even when the weather is not quite so welcoming so, in conjunction with Plymouth Youth Sailing, we first introduced the GUL-sponsored winter series. This is a six-race event, run in January, February and March which on a regular basis has drawn between 30 and 40 boats to competitive racing when they might previously have been mothballed until the spring.

The beauty about sailing is that you can be competitive whatever your boat, because we employ a handicap system to decide our winners and so everyone is in with a chance of glory on a particular day, depending on the strength of the wind, the water conditions and, of course, their own natural ability.

The success of the Winter Series showed there was a hunger for racing at all times of year, so we launched an autumn series as well which has been just as successful, drawing sailors from a little further afield.

From April onwards the calendar is increasingly busy. While Royal Plymouth Corinthian has chosen to focus on growing the dinghy racing side of the sport in recent times we have not forgotten about their sister craft and the four-race Doombar Spring Series run on Sundays in April has been hugely popular with yachtsmen.

Dinghy sailors looking to test themselves against their peers are superbly catered for. We have a ten-race spring series running on Wednesdays from April until the middle of June, when the 11-race summer series takes over, again on Wednesdays, which runs until the end of August.

Sailing (continued)

In addition, Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is an active supporter of the PPSA Port of Plymouth Regatta, which has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Not only do members help with the organisation, we even find time to sail in it as well and with no little success: 2010 saw our club win the team prize.

All club race results are posted on our website and we are on also on Twitter (twitter.com/RPCYC). We can even e-mail members to tell them when results are available.

Our own regatta, run jointly with West Hoe Sailing Club, takes place on a day in early September and we are actively involved in two charity races in the middle of the year, the RNLI Yealm Passage Race which raises funds for the lifeboat organisation, and the RPCYC Pigeon Trophy Race. This event, for yachts/keelboats and dinghies, starts at the club and finishes at Cargreen Yacht Club, where we have a little celebration at the end of the race. It is all in a good cause, with all monies raised going to the Oncology Department at Derriford Hospital.

The club has some talented sailors, notably the highly promising Dan Ellis, who finished third in the Silver Fleet in the 2010 World Laser Radial Youth Championships at Largs in North Ayrshire.

With Britain’s success on the water at the Beijing Olympic Games, where we won four gold medals - more than any other nation - sailing has seen an upsurge in popularity.

The Asymmetric class has been one that has really taken off. These boats have an asymmetric spinnaker and can be identified because they have a fixed pole, which extends from the front of the boat when the Gennaker (big sail at the front) is hoisted. They are particularly exciting to race downwind when they plot a distinctive zig-zag course.

Sailing (continued)

Ours may, at one stage, have been seen as an elitist sport, but this is certainly no longer the case and you do not have to be rich to enjoy sailing. True, top of the range dinghies can cost up to £12,000, but it is quite possible to get a good entry-level craft from around £500 and for as little as perhaps £200. Don’t forget, also, that Topper Topaz and Topper Xenon dinghies are available to hire by our members.

First, though, you must have gained the Royal Yachting Association Level 2 qualification which certifies that you have the necessary basic skills to handle a boat. We do not provide training at the club, but there are a host of organisations nearby where you can gain this qualification and once you have it, the seafaring world is your oyster.

The club has its own dinghy park, which is generally used between the beginning of April and the end of September by around 40 boats, which are then removed from the water to protect them from the angrier weather conditions over the winter months.

There are two established mooring buoys which are available to visitors during daylight hours. Alternatively, yachtsman may moor their craft either on the River Plym or at the three nearby marinas of Sutton Harbour, Queen Anne’s Battery or the Yacht Havens Marina, with the Mayflower Marina, which is only slightly further way, another option.

Although the club is closed on Mondays, members can gain access to the secure area where their boats are stored. Club night for racing is Wednesday, and we usually adjourn to the bar afterwards for supper and to chat about the evening’s events, just part of the fantastic social side to the club.

Last year was an exciting time for the club, because we were chosen to host a qualifying round for the World and European championships in the Laser class, in conjunction with the Mount Batten Centre and Plymouth Youth Sailing.

h It was one of a series of races around the country that drew some of the best sailors in the United Kingdom. Some 156 boats took part and the event was such a success that the organisers decided to come back again in 2011.

Becoming a member

You do not have to be a boat owner to join and enjoy Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club and new members are always guaranteed a warm welcome.

While our club is thriving and in an excellent state of health, we are a generous bunch who would like nothing better than to have more friends join us and discover what we have to offer.

There are many benefits attached to being a member, including 20 per cent discount on prices in the bar and restaurant. We have purchased a fleet of club-owned dinghies of the latest specification in which members can learn to sail at very advantageous rates compared with normal commercial rates in the area. Once qualified members can hire the boats, again at favourable rates, while all our sailors are able to gain access to our changing rooms and hot showers seven days a week.

We also have many members with larger yachts who participate in our sailing events and our cruising programme.

We have a very full and varied social programme throughout the year with many of our members joining to enjoy the social life of the club and the use of the bars and restaurant, and take in the magnificent panoramic vista from our viewing lounge and large balcony.

The View Restaurant

The View Restaurant has become a popular destination for those seeking mouth-watering cuisine at refreshingly reasonable prices. The spectacular views over Plymouth Sound while you sit down to your meal are simply an added bonus that further sets us apart from the ordinary.

A wide range of dishes, generally home made, is available from our all-day menu, together with a selection of daily specials. Vegetarians are always very well catered for and our chef is able to provide for those diners with special dietary requirements. Although not always necessary, it is advisable to book in advance.

Our starters feature the likes of home-made potted beef pate with wild mushrooms and horseradish or fresh home-made soup served with home-made breads and butter.

For your main course, why not try pan-fried chicken fillet on bubble and squeak with honeyed chilli sauce with fresh tomato or a darne of local salmon poached in white wine and herbs served with new potatoes, peas, lemon and tartar sauce.

Page 25: The Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club|2011

For dessert? How does sticky toffee pudding with pecan nut toffee sauce or treacle sponge pudding and custard sound?

These are just a few of the options available, there are many more besides. We also have a good selection of sandwiches and tasty snacks that are filling in their own right. The quality is certainly excellent, but we don’t skimp on portions, either!

Each Sunday we put on a three-course carvery, sometimes accompanied by performances from our club pianist.

When out and about enjoying the unique atmosphere of Plymouth Hoe, why not take time to enjoy our diverse lunchtime menu. For a mealtime accompaniment we offer an extensive choice of fine wines to leave the taste buds tingling.

We also have an in-house bakery where our chef bakes his delicious cakes and a variety of scones for our Devon cream teas.

h Food is available six days a week (Tuesday-Sunday) from 11am until last food orders at 3pm.

Sunday carvery

Plymouth is such a friendly city and news travels fasts, so it is hard to keep a good thing to yourself for very long.

Our View Restaurant offers a Sunday carvery every week which is gaining a reputation in its own right for excellence in its menu, atmosphere and quality of service.

Combining tasty food and tasteful live music while you chat with friends or family, or gaze out over the spectacular waters of Plymouth Sound, you may ask yourself whether dining gets any better than this!

We offer a choice of three starters, including home-made soup and breads. This is followed by a choice of two freshly roasted meats for your main course, with roast potatoes and a selection of fresh vegetables. Then there are the wonderful home-made desserts to finish, served with double cream, clotted cream or ice cream.

Sunday carvery (continued)

Undoubtedly the food is the main reason for our popularity, but the prices are equally appealing. You can opt for a three-course or two-course meal or a main course alone, all at very competitive prices.

To add that little extra-special ambience, there is live music on the second and fourth Sunday of the month provided by Peter Hutchinson, a very popular local pianist with a wealth of experience on cruise ships around the world. Peter’s piano-playing certainly hits the right note with our patrons, judging by how many keep on coming back.

Having your cake and eating it

Rumbling tummies are not a familiar sound at Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, with the culinary treats that we have in store.

As well as the scrumptious catering offered throughout the week in the View Restaurant, our creative chef has come up with an imaginative selection of home-made cakes and biscuits to tempt your palate.

The pièce de résistance has to be our famous Devon cream tea, which consists of two-home-made scones served with Devon clotted cream, strawberry jam and a pot of freshly-brewed tea. Very competitively priced, it is not those sort of pounds you will have to worry about if you pay us a visit!

Among the cake favourites are mincemeat crumble slice, marmalade cake and lemon drizzle cake, while other equally tempting offerings include cherry and pecan nut scones, banana and chocolate muffins and home-made shortbread.

h It is impossible to describe briefly in print just how tasty these creations are – the sensible solution would be to come pay us a visit and see for yourself.

RPCYC – the friendly club

Sailing is obviously what our club revolves around, but you do not have to be proficient in a boat to have a good time at Royal Plymouth Corinthian.

Our club has a wonderful atmosphere that draws people in from far and wide. No problem if your preferred interaction with water is by seating yourself beside one of the windows in our comfortable viewing lounge and gazing out at that picturesque expanse of ocean glistening before you.

Or perhaps your preferred use of that versatile liquid called H2O is by adding it in a glass to your favourite tipple and then settling down to a night of socialising with old acquaintances in a welcoming and hospitable environment. If so, then we can accommodate that too.

There is also a fantastic social side to Royal Plymouth Corinthian, with a great camaraderie between our members. New friends are easy to make with the host or events we organise, ranging from quizzes to the new craze of Zumba, which to the uninitiated, is “an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party”.

h We have a Christmas meal together and the summer ball is a particular highlight, and the club also hosts art exhibitions and workshops and craft fairs.

Weddings (continued)

It is easy to see why. There can be few more spectacular settings in our historic city, with the Hawkins Room and the Armada Room having uninterrupted sea views over Plymouth Sound.

With such a spectacular aquatic backdrop, we are confident you will enjoy some wonderful, lasting memories in a unique and romantic setting.

Your appreciate that your wedding day should be one of the most special days of your life and our philosophy is that it should be as important to us as it is to you.

RPCYC can accommodate up to 100 people for a seated meal or up to 150 for a buffet.

We think you will be impressed by our attention to detail and some of those extra touches that can make all the difference.

Take a look at the extensive photograph galleries on our website, to see the standard of presentation you can expect, plus the special coloured themes to match your taste and the mood you want to set for the big day.

As for the food, the talents of our catering team are appreciated well beyond the city limits and you only have to pop into our View Restaurant most days of the week to appreciate how popular we have become.

There can be no heartier recommendation than full tables, the clink of cutlery and the satisfied, happy faces of our customers sampling the culinary delights on offer.

The hire of the club for a civil wedding ceremony gives you access to all three of the function rooms (excluding the members’ bar) from midday until midnight.

If you choose us for your wedding reception, various options are available, with the most popular being the hiring of the club (excluding members’ bar) from 3pm until midnight or from 6pm until midnight.
