“OUCH, STOP PLEASE STOP!” was all someone on the outside could hear but

for me, I could hear the whispered “You little bitch I told you never to answer the phone”,

then sickening smack of leather against flesh. I hate that sound and every other like it

because it means the stinging pain is on the way only seconds after.

As that memory flitted through my head as my elbow length, platinum, blond,

hair got caught on a branch, and that tug made me remember so many others that were

just like that one with the awful pain of the belt buckle driving into my skin. I was still

hurting from my latest beating, or as my father used to call it lessons. Yeah right lesson

this asshole, I thought.

I was still on a high of adrenaline from sneaking out with about 20,000 dollars

from the bank account that I so painstakingly kept secret from my father. Even if he did

find out about it I had a solid excuse about saving up for collage. I had been planning

this get away for about 4 years. Part of that planning was to get his ass as drunk as I

could even if it ended in a beating for some problem that he made up in his mind, and it

did that’s why I’m wasn’t running as fast as I could have been, anyway he sleeps like

the dead when he’s drunk so it’s worth the price. My freedom that is. At around 1:30AM I

got up and got the backpack in the back of my closet that I kept packed with cloths that

fit, money that I had earned even before the bank account just in case that didn’t work

out. I snuck out the window because the door had a lock that opens from the outside

and only my dad has the key. I had tried that route a thousand times and there are no

dogs or other animals that will bark or growl at me because that was the rich part of

town. Oh yeah did I forget to mention that my dad is the owner of the local bank so we

had a lot of money, and that’s why it was so hard for me to keep my bank account

secret. After I got to the trees behind my house I knew I was home free, all I had to do is

get to the highway which was only about four miles and hitch a ride.

It took me about twenty minutes to get to the read, because I knew this route by

heart. Once I got there I started to walk in the opposite direction of the only life I had

ever known. And I was glad that it is over.

By morning I wasn’t even to the next town but there were more cars coming so I

was still hopeful. I checked my watch and it was about six. Around a half hour past

before a car started to slow down and I was grateful because my legs were about to

give out. I got in; luckily it was a girl from out of state so she didn’t recognize me.

“So where you headed?” She said

“How far are you going?’

“Next state over. Why?”

“Which one?”

“Idaho”

I thought about that for a moment “Okay that’s where I’m going”

We rode in silence for about an hour in which I fell asleep until she started

talking.

“So why are you going to Idaho”

Page 3: The Runaway Wolf

“Hmm “I said because I was still tired as all get out “Oh um a little soul searching”

She seemed to accept the excuse and we lapsed back into silence. So naturally I fell

back to sleep. I was nudged awake by a gentle hand.

“Darling wake up, what’s wrong? Don’t cry.”

“What, What” I reached up to touch my face and found that it was wet “Oh sorry I

didn’t realize that I was crying.”

“Was it a bad dream?”

“Um yeah that’s must have been it, but I can’t remember anything about it.” Well

that was a complete and total lie. I can always remember every one of the dreams that I

got beat in and this was one of them.

“Oh well do you need to go to the bathroom where almost at the state limits”

“Really how long was I asleep?”

“You slept for about two hours” she replied “so do you need to go to the bathroom

“Yeah” I answered “and I fell asleep to fast to introduce myself my name is-“ I

stopped trying to think or a different name other than mine “um Jane.” Lame name first

thing that came to my mind. My real name is Kalli Theerbrook. “Jane Austen. What’s

yours?”

“Jennifer. It’s nice to meet you Jane.” She said as she took the turn of the rest

area to our right.

Page 4: The Runaway Wolf

I went to the bathroom and got out before she did. I got in the car to wait for her.

As soon as she got in my stomach did the biggest grumble ever.

“Oh sorry.”

“No problem I’m kind of hungry too.”

We went to the Burger King in the next town. I had just finished eating as we

made it to the border. Oh no they asked for ID’s.

“Mornin’ ladies may I see your ID’s”

Jen gave hers willingly I however had to look in my back pack to “find” it. I

rummaged through everything to make it look like a good search. I looked up pleadingly

at the border man “I left mine at my house.” I tried to turn in my seat to see him better it

didn’t work I flinched and let out a little ouch.

“You all right there missy?”

“No I don’t have my ID and I hurt from what my- “I clamped my hands over my

face and started to cry. I had formulated the perfect get away and it was all ruined by

the stupid border. At that thought I wailed louder.

“Now missy just give me your name and I’ll let you by”

I sniffled “really?” I asked in a little girl’s voice

“Yeah”

Page 5: The Runaway Wolf

“Jane Austen.” That was my mother’s name that’s probably why it popped in my

head. My mother “died” when falling down the stairs. But I know what really happened.

Mom and father got into a fight and she was winning so father got rid of the argument by

pushing her down the stairs. To him it was only a bonus that she died so he was able to

beat me to his heart’s content.

“Okay darlin’ you can go.” He said to Jennifer.

We drove off. I slumped back in my seat then stiffened as Jennifer asked, “What

do you hurt from?”

I thought a moment “Sleeping in the car.”

“Really because as you were sleeping you winced at any movement and were

saying ‘no stop’ over and over again.”

“Please don’t take me back, please.”

“How old are you Jane and what is your real name?”

“I’m nineteen and my real name is Kalli Theerbrook and my dad beats the hell

out of me every time I do something wrong.” The tears I had been trying to keep out

ever since my mom died came to the forefront and made a river down my face. She

pulled to the side of the road and reached over and held me in her arms until all that

came out were dry sobs. “Why is it so easy to talk to strangers?” I said between sobs.

“I don’t know honey I don’t know.” She crooned “I know what you're going

through because I went through the same thing and I promised myself if I ever saw a

young girl hitch hiking I would pick her up.”

Page 6: The Runaway Wolf

“Really?” I said with a sniff

“Yup and the guy that picked me up, I ended up telling him too. Guess what he is

now.”

“What”

“My husband.”

“Really he didn’t laugh or anything?”

“Nope... Would you like to go to my house and stay until you get your bearings?”

“Well I don’t want to impose and I can’t be seen out in public.”

“Okay I see what you mean. Where would you like me to drop you off?”

“Um,” I thought about this, were the best place to hide from my father “A small

town near the woods.”

“Okay I know just the place.”

“Where?”

“Horseshoe Bend.”

“Okay.”

We sat in silence for about three hours. I looked out the windows at the endless

forest, fell asleep, and ate some granola bars that I brought with me. I was asleep when

I was shaken awake like the first time.

“Wake up Kalli, I’m home to get some stuff then we’ll be off again.”

Page 7: The Runaway Wolf

“Ok.”

“Would you like to meet my husband?”

“No.” I said wearily.

“Ok I’ll be right out.” She looked a little disappointed but didn't pester.

Jen came back out and we were off. The next time I was woken up was so she

could tell me that we were there. I got out of the car and said thanks, and then I was on

my own. For the rest of my life.

I shook off that thought and started walking to the outdoors store to buy a

sleeping bag and warmer clothes. Once done at the store I was off to the forest to live

for an uncertain amount of time.

I walked for what seemed like days but when I looked at my watch it was only

hours. When I couldn’t see where I was walking I set the bag that I had been carrying all

day, down and then set up camp for my first night away from my father. My first night

without a beating.

I got out the flash light and batteries to see if I could read one of my favorite

books. I had brought five with me, Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, a Survival Guide and

some other fun reading. I also had bought a sketch pad in the local supply store. I

thought against using my flash light in case I really had to, so I went to the bathroom

behind a bush and dug out my mat, blanket and foam pillow. All of which I bought at the

outdoors store.

The next morning I went to the stream to wash up and rinse my hair out. I didn’t

Page 8: The Runaway Wolf

drink out of it though because I didn’t know if it was spring water or if it was gross water

that carries the sewage down to the river. I went back to camp and just sat there

wondering what I should do. I really hadn’t thought I would get this far. I guess it’s time

to get a job. UGHH I hate working. I hiked into town and set out looking for a good place

to work. I found the perfect place as a warehouse laborer. No real ID required and I

won’t be found that easily. After applying for the job I went back to the camp and went

exploring wondering what I will find. I went through the woods on some almost

nonexistent animal trails and saw what looked like dog scratches on a tree trunk. Just

as I saw that I slipped and fell down the hill, on my way down hitting a couple trees.

When I finally stopped at the bottom I was in the middle of a clearing with what

looked like a wall of vegetation blocking my path. I got up and tried to move the leaves

and vines out of my way but to my surprise it was a real wall not just that of vegetation. I

walked around the wall to see if it was attached to anything or just a random wall. To my

pleasure it was. Though it looked the same as that wall I could see a door a couple of

windows and an almost overgrown stone porch. I pulled off some of the vines on the

window and dusted it off to see if anyone was home. To my expanding luck there wasn’t.

I was so ecstatic that I ran up the hill and retraced my steps back to the camp.

As soon as I got back to the camp I packed up all my things and hurried it

back to the cabin. When I finally got there I was so out of breath I collapsed. After I

caught my breath and rested my legs I went to discover what I was about to move into. I

opened the door, but held onto it tightly just in case it was going to fall off, but when I

saw that, it wasn’t a problem I let go and went to the center of the room. There didn’t

look like there were any animals sleeping in here so I went out to get my stuff. I picked it

Page 9: The Runaway Wolf

up and went back to the cabin. I dropped my things on the floor so I could go see what

the rest of the cabin looked like. The room I was standing in was the living room and

there was a little side bar then the kitchen and dining room. Off of the living room were

the bedrooms. Or should I say bedroom. The bed was stripped and had a nice big layer

of dust on it just like everything else. I went to the small walk-in closet and saw that, that

was where the sheets and bed coverings were. I went back to the living room and as I

walked through the opening I saw another doorway of the room.

“Hmmm wonder what that is?” I murmured to myself. I walked over to the door

and cautiously opened it. “YES this place has running water.” What I had found was a

bathroom with a toilet, a sink and a shower. I ran to the kitchen to see if the water

worked. It did. I let the pipes flow to get all the dirty water out and then after the colored

water was done flowing I let it flow more so I could be sure it was clean. I took huge

gulps because I was so thirsty. That day all I did was buy groceries and clean. When it

was time for bed I was exhausted. “I’m going to need a car or a four wheeler or

something if I want to go from town and back.” I muttered right on the edge of sleep.

***

I got a call from my water company saying that the bill would come for water on

the third of every month. “What the hell” I muttered as I listened to my messages. What

was said next surprised me even more because as far I knew no one lives at that

address and I haven’t been there in over two years. Shit I have to go check it out see if

anybody is living on my property, or if the water company was just a bunch of idiots. It’ll

have to be a quick visit because I don’t have that much time away from my job on

Page 10: The Runaway Wolf

vacation or sick days. I work for a detective agency and it will have to be closed a few

days without its star searcher. I’m only the star searcher because of my weird ass blood

and the side effects that come with it. See I’m a werewolf and not like the ones you see

in the movies. I don’t change on the full moon and silver doesn’t affect me at all. Except

I’m allergic to it, but that wouldn’t be enough to kill me even if I was shot with a silver

bullet. My family and I are the only living werewolves that I know of, there may be more

but my family doesn’t travel a lot.

I didn’t race into the clearing only because I could smell another person. It was

late at night and whoever was in the house, and I had no doubt that there was someone

there, should be asleep. And they were I could hear their even breathing. It had been

three days since the call and I have wanted to find out who was here ever since the

moment I hung up the phone. I crept over to the window peeked in and saw that the

house was clean and that it would smelled nice because I saw cleaning solution on the

table. In that moment I knew it was a girl that was using my house because it was so

clean. No guy would ever have cleaned all of that up. I tried the door and found that it

was locked so I used the little panel that only I knew about that opened up the door from

the outside. I had all the latest techno stuff that has to do with security, on every one of

my homes because I don’t want anyone to get in. But obviously the door had somehow

been unlocked after I left. Nodin. I stepped into the cabin and crept to the only bedroom,

and sure enough there lay a, what looked to be twenty year old sleeping in my bed. She

slept in the fetal position and as I watched her, she didn’t move. Suddenly she sat bolt

upright and looked straight at me with ice blue eyes.

Page 11: The Runaway Wolf

***

I was having another nightmare I knew it because father was beating me, about

to kill me but as the knife went into my chest I was still surprised to find out that it was

only a dream; A very bad dream. I sat bolt upright and looked around the room only with

my eyes to assure myself that no one was there, but there was. A man that I could

hardly see but I knew was there. I couldn’t talk I just stared at him and tried to

comprehend how my father had already found me. I thought I would have at least a

month before I was forced to go back by his goons and face him; but I guess that I only

had five days. Not even a week. Damn he’s good. “Please don’t take me back to my

father.” I blurted out in almost a pleading sob. He took a step with his arm out and I

reflexively lurch backward off the bed.

***

After she looked at me she blurted out “please don’t take me back to my father.” I

recognized the pleading note in her voice so I took a step forward and she lurched back

and fell off the bed. I was around the bed in seconds and when I crouched beside her

she cowered into the corner. Then I saw the bruises and red marks that were only

starting to fade from what looked like a belt and a fist. For some reason this made me

furious. Even though I didn’t know her and she was trespassing on my property, seeing

those bruises I wanted to kill the person that did that to her. “Who did that to you?”

***

The tone that he asked the question in was the one that I hear whenever I’m

about to be in trouble so I scrunched into the wall and covered my head, in case he hit

Page 12: The Runaway Wolf

me. He didn’t hit me but he touched my arm as if to see if I was all right. But as he

touched me it was like nothing I have ever felt. It felt like a thousand tiny shocks went

through my body at once. I whimpered and he quickly backed up. I saw my chance so I

went from sitting crouched against the corner to getting up and running for my purse in

no time flat. I grabbed my purse and flew through the living room as fast as I could but

once I was outside he had already pinned me to the ground.

***

She got up so suddenly and flew through the house that I almost lost her, but she

had to stop to get the door unlocked and that slowed her down. She raced out the door

but before she could get a good head start I tackled her and pinned her to the ground.

Not the gentlest way but it was effective. She almost started screaming, but I didn’t want

to attract attention from my pack that lives in this area, so I put my hand over her mouth.

She bit my hand, and damn it she drew blood. “STOP!” I whispered fiercely. Suddenly

she went limp.

***

I was about to scream but he put his hand over my mouth. To see if I could get

his hand out of the way I bit him as hard as I could. I drew blood and he still wouldn’t

move his hand. As an idea struck I decided that I should use it so I went limp. I could

feel and hear his reaction. He cursed and started to move off of me. He’s almost off just

one more second. I thought and as soon as he was off I moved faster than I ever

thought I could. I sprang forward, scooped up my purse on the run, and ran into the

woods. Not knowing where I was going or how I was going to get there. I just ran as fast

Page 13: The Runaway Wolf

8/14/2019 The Runaway Wolf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-runaway-wolf 13/31

as I could. But unfortunately my fast is his slow and he caught up to me easily. He

grabbed my arm and told me to stop. I could think of no way out of this so I did.

“What are you running from, and how did you find my house?”

“I went for a walk and found it. I thought it was abandoned.” It certainly looked

that way.

“You didn’t answer my first question. Who are you running from?”

“I don’t have to talk to you. Let go of me or you will regret it.” She just didn’t know

how.

“Really and what are you going to do?” he asked with a smirk

Think quickly. “Ummm. This” I need him where the sun don’t shine and he

instantly let go of me and cupped himself while falling to the ground. I took off running. I

was about thirty yards away when I felt someone or something following me. I started to

slow, then thought better of it and pushed myself faster. Once I was in a clearing I

looked around. What I saw terrified me because what I saw was huge and looked to

intelligent to be just an animal. The wolf was rushing at me so again I took off running.

That just seemed to make it more into the chase. But right them I felt my insides start to

burn. “AHHHHHH” I screamed in agony. The wolf stopped, and to me looked like he

cursed. Then there wasn’t a wolf but a man. I was stumbling my way through the

clearing and I hurt so much that I couldn’t run any more. I collapsed in a heap on the

ground not caring if the wolf/ man got me. I was in more agony then I ever was when my

father hit me. “AHHH” I screamed again. But then it was gone and I felt fine, better than

Page 14: The Runaway Wolf

8/14/2019 The Runaway Wolf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-runaway-wolf 14/31

I ever have before. I tried to get up so I could run again, but when I tried it didn’t work

very well. I had four legs. “WHAT THE HELL?!” was what I meant to say but it came out

in furious barks.

***

She kneed me in the nuts then ran away. Oh I was going to get her. I turned into

a wolf because she was already too far away to catch in human form. She ran into a

clearing. Bad move on her part because I could catch up with her in a clearing. She

looked back and saw me, and ran faster. But then she screamed in agony. I stopped

short and cursed. Not that it would have been heard in human just wolf. She was still

stumbling along but then she fell then screamed again. What happened next took me off

guard because one moment she was human; I had only taken my eyes off her for a

moment so I could change into a human again, and the next she was a pure white wolf.

She tried to get up but she couldn’t. Then she barked a curse that I knew all too well to

be what the hell.

***

I looked up and saw the man from the cabin. I growled at him, as if to say that I

wasn’t helpless and I could still bite his balls off. I tried to stand up again this time I got

it. I started backing away really slowly but he moved right along with me. He turned into

a wolf and started forward. He was all black and HUGE. He was a formidable foe so I

turned quickly and loped into the woods trying to get away. Two seconds later I was on

my belly while he bit my shoulder. Why was this guy always on me? Just then I realized

that I still didn’t know his name.

Page 15: The Runaway Wolf

***

She growled at me so I was cautious I didn’t want my dick torn off. She started

backing away as if to run, so I turned back into my wolf form. I was all black and bigger

them my whole family even my dad, even though he was the alpha. She suddenly

turned and sprinted into the forest. I sprinted after and in no time flat had she pinned.

“okay I’m going to help you to turn back to a human now k’?”

“Um sure.” She sounded panicked

“’K breathe deeply and thinks about what you look like as a human.”

“Okay.”

I could feel her breathing and all of a sudden I was on a humans' back. So I

changed back as soon I was sure she wouldn’t bolt. When werewolves change

everything that they have on at the moment changes with them so we both had cloths

on when we changed back. A good thing because I didn’t even know her name.

***

What is he? I thought. What am I?

“You can get off me now”

“Really, you sure you won’t take off again?”

“Well not entirely but I couldn’t out run you, and you’re hurting me.”

Page 16: The Runaway Wolf

“Considering that sorry” he got up. “What’s your name and why are you living in

my house?”\

“Jane Austen.” I said only missing a small beat “I needed a place to stay.”

“Why?” That was all he said but it held so many questions.

“Because if I didn’t stay there I would be staying on the ground, and probably get

attacked by, you.”

“I wouldn’t have attacked you. I wouldn’t even be here if I hadn’t gotten a call

from the water company saying that the water has been used in my cabin.”

“Just to be curious um what am I?”

“Oh yeah I kind of accidently turned you into a werewolf.”

“Figured.” I thought for a moment Price worth paying to keep my freedom. “Look

if you’ll let me get my stuff ill find somewhere else to live. What’s your name?”

“Wahyat Reeder, and no you’re not living in the woods like some animal.”

“Well thanks to you, I am.”

“Yeah, yeah, come one lets go back to the house.”

I love the name Wahyat (pronounced y-et). As I followed him I thought about how

he looked. Tall, dark, I think that he’s a Native American, black hair and an air of

confidence that surrounds him like a second skin. I didn’t want to follow him, but I did

because I was scared that he would get mad and hurt me. I guess old habits die hard.

Page 17: The Runaway Wolf

Once we got back to the cabin he ushered me in and I stumbled over the

doorway. He had to carry me to the sofa so I could lie down. I was so tired all I wanted

to do was sleep.

“I know adrenaline does that to you.”

“Mmhhmm” I mumbled and fell into a dead sleep.

***

As she lay there in the deep sleep she looked so innocent, but I was still

wondering who she got the bruises from and why she was lying to me about her name.

Have to talk to mom and dad he thought. Wahyat went outside with his cell and called.

“Hey mom is dad around?”

“Well hello to you too. Yes he’s right here he can hear you.”

“Hello” said his father Jonah Reeder

“Hey how did you change mom to a werewolf?”

“Um why?” dad said kind of guarded

“Well if it was her blood or DNA got contaminated with your blood then we have a

BIG problem.”

“SHIT! You and whomever you changed need to come to Bend NOW.”

“I don’t even know the girls real name I’m not abducting her and brining her to

Bend.”

Page 18: The Runaway Wolf

“Fine your mother, your younger sister and I are on our why. Oh wait, where are

you?”

“My cabin in Horseshoe Bend.” I said and as soon as he got the place he hung

up. Good old dad.

They got here in four hours luckily “Jane” was still asleep. It was about five thirty

and the sun’s rays were just filtering through the trees giving everything a nice green

hew. Dad came running in wolf form with mom and Sackari on his heals; dads a grey

wolf, moms a brown and Saki’s a mix of both. They stopped and changed back to

human and Saki bound up to me and hugged me like she hadn’t seen me last week.

“Hey guys whisper because she’s still asleep.’

“Well I’ll go wake her up” said my father

“No dad!” but it was already too late he was in the door.

All I heard was a blood curtailing scream and a very loud thud, then a crying

Jane

I was having an awesome dream about flying through the forest in a wolf form.

Feeling like a puppy and running with no one to tell me I couldn’t. Then I felt someone

nudge me awake. I opened my eyes, screamed and punched him harder than I thought

I ever could and sent him flying. I started to cry when I realized it wasn’t my father. Then

I felt someone circle me with their arms, I stiffened until I could smell who it was. I would

Page 19: The Runaway Wolf

know this smell anywhere, Wahyat. I fell into him while I sobbed and said I was sorry

over and over again.

***

I ran in and saw dad on the floor about three feet away from Jane and her

sobbing curled up on the couch. I went over to her and held her. When she was done

crying I tried to hand her off to my mom so I could explain to everyone what happened.

She wasn’t having that so I explained while she was curled up against me like she could

hide from my family.

***

After I was done crying I stayed curled up against his side so I could try to hide

from them. I didn’t think it was working. I still didn’t completely trust Wahyat but I trusted

him more them the other man or even the girls there, even though one was my age.

***

“Okay mom dad this is Jane she is now under our packs protection.” Wahyat

stated like any other fact. “And please try not to scare her as you have probably noticed

she has been abused.” And one day I will get whoever did this to her because this just

isn’t right. I told them all, including Jane, how I came to find her in my bed and the

events that took place after. I tried to get her to tell how she came to be there but her

lips were locked.

“Wow so okay what color wolf is she?” asked Saki after I was done explaining

“She is a white wolf with ice blue eyes.”

“Cool and your black.” Said Sackari

“I’m white?” Jane asked in a small voice

“Yeah and you are very beautiful” I whispered

This made me blush and I hid my face behind his back so no one would see it.

“Jane, Jane, Jane.” Wahyat’s mom said

I realized they were talking to me. Crap I’m going to have to give them my real

name.

“Um yeah?” I looked up at Wahyat

“What’s your real name, and tell me the truth because I know when people lie.”

This from Wahyat.

“My real names Kalli.” I answered “sorry I didn’t tell you the truth earlier I was

scared. I still am but I know I can trust you.” That’s really weird because I have never

trusted anyone. I turned to his family and sat up like I was an adult. “My full name is

Kalli Theerbrook and I used to live in Bend, Oregon.”

“Really that’s where we live?” Said Sackari

“Yeah and my father abused me after my mom died” I could tell my voice broke

when I said that. “I ran away about a week ago and I don’t know if he’s searching for me

or not. All I know is that I had to get away before he killed me.”

“Is your father Jonathan Theerbrook the owner of the bank?” asked his father

Page 21: The Runaway Wolf

“Yeah.” I answered “I hitched a ride and went wherever the road took me.

Obviously it took me here.” Wahyat’s mom handed me a paper towel and only then did I

realize that I was crying. “Oh sorry I usually don’t cry.” I wiped my eyes and resumed

back into my story. “I was here for three days and then Wahyat scared the livin’ b’jesus

out of me when I woke up from a nightmare. I ran away from him, he tackled me and I

bit him. Here I am, wolf girl.” Oh lucky, lucky me. I took a deep breath and let it out.

Then I heard something outside I turned and saw a grey wolf. “Who’s that?” they all

looked and started to laugh. “What?”

“Kalli that would be my brother Nodin. My sister, Talla should be right behind

him.”

“Oh, why is everyone laughing?”

“Because he always brags about being a silent as the wind and you heard him

when no one else did.” Just then Nodin and Talla changed and came striding into the

house.

“Wahyat,” yelled Talla “I haven’t seen you and why weren’t we invited to this

family gathering?”

“Who’s she?” asked Nodin

“This would be or newest member of our pack. Say hello to Kalli.”

His brother came over to shake my hand and I scrunched back into the couch as

far as I could. He stepped back and asked “what’s her problem?”

“Dude shut up or you’re going to get hurt” said Wahyat he sounded mad.

Page 22: The Runaway Wolf

“Okay, okay god got a stick up your ass?”

“Language.” Piped in their mom

“Sorry mom.” Nodin said

To the new arrivals we told them the same thing that we just got done explaining.

After I was done my explanation it was around one and I hadn’t eaten all day. I was

starving. I reached up and whispered in Wahyat’s ear that I was hungry. He nodded and

got up and went to make dinner for everyone. He made burgers and they smelled

wonderful. While everyone was chatting in the kitchen I went outside and climbed up a

tree to sit and think. I thought about how I’m now stronger then my father and that he

can’t hurt me anymore. At that realization I could feel tears tracking down my face but I

didn’t make a noise. They weren’t sad tears they were relief tears and I was relieved

that I was finally safe. I climbed down and made sure no one was watching. I thought

about a wolf, a pure white one. I dropped down to the ground and started running in my

wolf form. I don’t think anyone noticed but I went on different trails through water and all

around the town. I just wanted to get away and be alone with no one to tell me what to

do.

***

I looked over at the couch to see that Kalli had gone outside. I told dad to

watch the burgers then I went to see where she was. I didn’t find her. I changed into

wolf form the see if I could smell her. I could she had taken off and had a good five

minute head start. I changed back went inside in a panic “Mom, dad Kalli is gone” I shot

back outside changing on the run and ran after her sent. She threw me off a couple of

If you don’t tell me you will not be able to get there. I will say this one last time.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

***

Oh he sounded angry. I don’t think I should tell him. I couldn’t get a bus ride

because I don’t have money.

I’m going to Mountain Home to visit someone because I was impolite when I saw

her last.

 And who is this someone?

The girl who gave me a ride when I hitch hiked.

You need to stop so I can catch up with you.

Oh my god why?

Because your father may have found who you hitched a ride from and is there

waiting for you

I can take care of myself now

Kalli don’t make me give you an order

FINE god do you always get what you want?

Most of the time yes; how long have you been running?

 About ten minutes.

Okay get in human form please. I will follow your scent and I swear to god if you

Page 25: The Runaway Wolf

move you will be in serious trouble.

***

I got there and instantly changed back so I could make sure she was okay. I

know it wasn’t okay for me to worry so much but I couldn’t help it. She’s part of our pack

of course I’m going to be worried. That’s what I told myself at the time.

***

He walked up to me brought me into his arms and I don’t know who moved first

all I know is that our lips touched. Wahyat deepened the kiss by skimming his tongue

over the seam of my lips as if to ask for entrance. There was nothing much I could to

except grant entrance and enjoy, and that I did. He moaned deep in his throat and

brought me closer so his body was imprinted on mine and vice versa. I was upset that I

had to side track to go to Jen’s house, then escape again just to be alone, but I didn’t

mind the kissing. I just have to make sure I don’t do anything to obvious or he will catch

on.

He let go of me and I blushed furiously when he looked at me with a smile on his

face. “So where does this lady live?”

“Mountain Home”

“Okay, let’s run.”

“Okay” If I’m not carful I could fall for him if it isn’t happening already, and that’s

not good for my plan.

Page 26: The Runaway Wolf

We changed back to wolves and ran alongside the highway just out of sight of

humans.

Hey you hungry?

Yes oh my god I haven’t eaten since like last night.

Okay we’ll stop at a burger joint on our way to the city.

They stopped in the nearest town and went to a burger king. We ate quickly and

quietly. When we left to run again Wahyat stopped me by backing me up against the

wall. I stiffened because I still wasn’t comfortable with men near me. He kissed my neck

and worked his way up my jaw until I relaxed and pulled his lips up to meet mine.

***

I kissed her long and hard making promises for the future. I cradled her head in

my hand in case she tried to pull away. When we came up for air I laid my forehead

against hers and kissed her nose. She blushed so bad that I laughed.

“Don’t laugh at me”

“I’m sorry” I said not really meaning it and I think she knew too because she

scowled and moved out of my arms. “Come on lets go we want to be there before night

fall.

***

We got there by around seven and I looked at myself in their car mirror and

scrubbed my teeth with my finger then combed my fingers through my hair. I still looked

Page 27: The Runaway Wolf

like crap. I went to knock on their door self assured that I would be leaving alone.

“Hello” a man answered the door. Her husband. Wahyat tensed beside me

and moved a little in front to better protect me. I rolled my eyes even though I was still

happy he did it.

“Who is it honey” Jen said from inside. She came to the door to see for

herself not waiting for an answer. As soon as she saw me she bound around her

husband hugged me almost sending me sprawling. I hugged her back just as furtively.

After we made introductions we walked into the, suburban white picket fence, type

house. We all walked into the living room, I sat by Wahyat because I was not

comfortable at all with being in the same room with a male I didn’t know.

“Well this is a surprise how did you two meet?” Jen said

I looked at Wahyat apprehensively not knowing what to say.

***

She looked worried so I made up a quick answer that was as close to the truth as

possible. “Kalli and I met when she was walking in the woods with a big bag of camping

supplies but didn’t have a tent. I invited her in and we became friends quickly.” Kalli

blushed and I chuckled under my breath.

***

Okay here’s my chance “Jen where’s your bathroom?”

“Go down the hall and it’s the first door on your right.”

Page 28: The Runaway Wolf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-runaway-wolf 28/31

“Okay thanks” I hope she knew that I was saying thanks for everything. I went to

the bathroom but there was no window. SHIT!!! But there was a door way. I went

through it and ended up in a bedroom that was facing the woods. Perfect. I felt bad that

I was leaving Wahyat here to cope with where I went. I popped the screen out and

 jumped.

***

Kalli walked down the hall and I heard the door open. I engaged in small talk

while she took a little longer than I thought she would need to. Because I was paying

attention I heard a screen pop out. Damn. I sprinted out the door and ran around the

house to find Kalli jumping out the window right on top of me. I caught her and we fell to

the ground. I rolled on top of her incase she tied to get away again.

***

I looked down right as I was jumping and saw Wahyat. It was too late to stop

myself so I ended up falling on top of him. I would have gotten away if he hadn’t rolled

on top of me. I looked over and saw Jennifer and her husband looking stunned watching

us. Between clenched teeth I said “Get off of me.”

He bent down to whisper in my ear. “Only if you promise not to run.”

I promised because this position was not doing it for me. Now on top of

everything else my hormones are acting up. Great. Wahyat got up and pulled me up

beside him and held firm hold on my hand. I really wanted to run I can bet what my face

would look like because I could feel it burning. I mumbled my apologies and goodbyes

Page 29: The Runaway Wolf

Kalli stopped by a tree to catch her breath; I stayed back behind a bush so she

wouldn’t see me. Abruptly she sat down and started crying. Aw crap. I moved from

behind the bushes and purposely made noise. A few seconds after the twig snapped

she started laughing as she cried. I had no clue what to do so I enfolded her in my arms

and just let her cry it out.

By the end of her crying jag I was strung as tight as a bow and desperately

wanting her to stop crying. When the tears stopped and her breathing calmed I sighed

in relief. I eased her away from my body and looked down at her face.

“Look at me.” I said softly

“Why?” Kalli mumbled

“Because I need to make sure you’re alright” I answered softly. She looked up at me

and when I saw her face my heart contracted painfully.

***

I looked up at him knowing my face would be all puffy and red from crying. I

guess everything just caught up with me. I realize now that I can’t run and hide from my

problems anymore, I have to live with them.

Okay so the things I had to learn to live with were a little more bazaar than usual

but I’ve never had a normal life. I guess an apology was in order ‘cause well that wasn’t

cool, and I got his shirt all wet.

While still looking up at him and had the nerve I said “sorry”.

“Why are you sorry kalli?” Wahyat said looking dumbfounded.

“For crying and running away and stuff.”

Page 31: The Runaway Wolf

“Honey I’ll be the first one to admit I have no clue what I’m doing but if you need

to cry then by all means cry it out.”

“I’m still sorry.” I said in a small voice “So I guess we can go back to the cabin.

Do you think that everyone will be mad at me?”

“If they are then they can leave and, or deal with it.” If that was an attempt at

humor it worked because it got a chuckle out of me. “Come on lets go.”

Wahyat and I changed back into wolves and started running. While we were

going back to his cabin I noticed how different the senses of a wolf are the light was

brighter, the smells sharper, and I could hear out around me so far.
