From the Principal Dear Families, "Response to Intervention" or RtI...What is it?The term "Response to Intervention" refers to the process by which we as aschool team assess where students are, identify areas that students may bestruggling with and develop a plan to assist the students in gaining specificskills and strategies that will help them be successful in reaching grade levelstandards. There are three distinct parts of this process including universal screeningor the assessment (or review of data) for every student at a grade level, progress monitoring, and research-based instruction. Though the RtI models vary from district to district, it is usually defined as athree-tier approach where "Tier 1" corresponds to the high-qualityinstruction that happens in the classroom that will meet the needs for80-85% of the students in the classroom. "Tier 2" refers to the need for asmall percentage of students whose assessments indicate a lag in conceptsor skills. This 10-15% of the students in a given classroom may requireadditional targeted instruction for a short period of time to learn thoseconcepts and skills and can then once again be on a positive tracktowards meeting grade level expectations. Within "Tier 2", students may beworking with a math specialist or literacy specialist to receive the short-terminterventions. This instruction is in addition to classroom instruction, not asubstitution for classroom instruction. "Tier 3" addresses the needs of approximately 5% of students whose assessments indicate that there are

greater lapses in progress or skill development ( a grade level or more) andmore intensive interventions are employed. Early in the fall, there are literacy and math assessments that areadministered in order for us to gather important data about students'current level of performance and to determine what interventions might benecessary. You may recall that teachers use the Benchmark AssessmentSystem (BAS) to assess reading. For Math, students take the "Beginning ofthe Year" (BOYA) assessment in the elementary grades and this year, Runkleis also piloting iReady, an online screening tool, in grades 4 and 6 to getadditional information about students' strengths and relative weaknesses. These results along with additional assessment data are then used to makedecisions about which students will require short-term interventions to assistthem in gaining the specific concepts and skills they need to continue toprogress. For reading, we use the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) and forMath, we are using Marilyn Burns "Do the Math" modules in addition to otherresearch-based programs and approaches as needed. As a school, we are continually assessing student progress (either formally orinformally), identifying where interventions are needed, monitor and trackstudent progress over time and are continually reflecting about what isworking for our students. Upcoming Events... First Meeting of the Runkle School Council

This Wednesday, October 8th at 4:00 p.m. we will hold the first meeting ofthe year with the Runkle School Council. This meeting is open to the publicand will be held in the Library. IPR - Interim Progress Reports (Grades 6-8)This Friday, students will be bringing home their IPRs. Please be looking forthem as it marks how your child is progressing at the mid-point of the firstterm. If you do not receive it on Friday, please follow up with Jim Stoddardor myself and we will print another copy for you. For IPRs, parents will seewhether their student is making "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" progress sofar. In addition to marking the academic progress, effort and behavior aremarked on a four-point scale that indicates that students are meetingteachers' expectations:1 = Consistently 2 = Usually3 = Sometimes4 = RarelyHaving conversations with your child now about how they are doing inclass and developing some short-term goals together will go a long way tohelping your child be successful this year. 7th and 8th Grade Math Problem of the Week: New OperationImagine that a new mathematical operation is being used. Its symbol is #.See the following equations.

1 # 1 = 2 3 # 5 = 34 6 # 9 = 177 10 # 14 = 296

Find the value of 15 # 19, and explain your reasoning.

Last Week's Problem and Solution Digging a HoleIf it takes two workers 4 hours and 35 minutes to dig a hole 3 meters long,3 meters wide, and 3 meters deep, how long would it take five workers todig a hole 6 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 6 meters deep if they workedat the same rate? SolutionAbout 880 minutes or 14.7 hours. The first hole has a volume of 3 x 3 x 3= 27 cubic units. The new hole has a volume of 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 cubicunits; 216/27 shows that 8 smaller holes would fit into the larger hole. Inother words, the new hole is twice as wide, twice as long, and twice asdeep as the original, so it would take 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 times as long. Thesmaller hole took two workers 4 hours and 35 minutes or 275 minutes, soit would take two workers 2,200 minutes to dig the larger hole. With 5workers, it would take 2/5 * 2200 minutes or 880 minutes to dig the largerhole. Look for the answer in the next issue of the Runkle News! See www.lassmath.com for more problems from Mr. Lass.

From the Superintendent's OfficeDear Parents and Guardians:
