Dear Recorder Society members, Can you believe that we have fi-nally gotten rain? My little frog rain gauge showed that we got 2.5 inches on Friday and Saturday morning and 4.25 inches on Sunday. Our creek is running once again and our pond which was half dried up is now coming back. The autumn weather feels awesome after such a warm/hot winter, spring and summer. Our November ConductorOur November ConductorOur November ConductorOur November Conductor Frances FeldonFrances FeldonFrances FeldonFrances Feldon

Frances Feldon is quite sure she was a troubadour in a former life; in her present existence, she performs on baroque flute and recorder, and is a conductor, educator, and arranger. She has performed with American Bach Soloists, California Bach Society, So-noma Bach, Ensemble Mirabile, in conjunc-tion with the Berkeley Early Music Festival, and on the SFEMS concert series at the CA Jazz Conservatory. Ms Feldon was a recipient of the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology recorder resi-dency. She is music director of baroque/contemporary chamber music ensemble Flauti Diversi, and a principal conductor for The Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra. She teaches recorder and baroque flute privately, at Albany adult school, has been a regular conductor and faculty member at recorder workshops throughout North America, and has also taught at UC Davis, Indiana Univer-sity and The Greenwood School in Mill Val-ley. She directed the San Francisco Early Music Society's Recorder Workshop for nearly twenty years. Ms Feldon has con-ducted her recorder orchestra arrangements of Gershwin and Ellington classics at the in-ternational recorder festival "Les Journées de la Flute à Bec" (Montreal) and again at the International Congress of Recorder Orches-tras (Holland). She writes about jazz and pop recorder players for American Recorder. Dr Feldon received a Doctor of Music in collegium directing at Indiana University’s Early Music Institute with a thesis on musi-cal rhetoric and vibrato in France from 1675 - 1725. Ms Feldon recently released her CD of Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s complete Opus 37 trio sonatas for baroque flute, viola da gamba and chamber organ, which is avail-able on CDBaby. She is currently having a blast studying with jazz and Arabic music. Enjoy Flauti Diversi’s concert at the CA Jazz Conservatory on Jan 15, 2017.

A Sacred Banquet: Settings of O Sacrum convivium

O Sacrum convivium is an antiphon for the Magnificat from the Second Vespers of Cor-pus Christi. It has been set musicially many many times. We will work on a variety of beautiful settings by Renaissance greats Jacques Arcadelt, Francesco Guerrero and Orlandus Lassus; the baroque composer Gio-vanni Battista Pergolesi; and 20th century master Olivier Messaien. Get set for an eve-ning of serenity.

SRS Non-Member Meeting Policy

Please be aware... We love having new members and a non-member is welcome to attend two SRS meetings for free. After that there will be a $5 fee per meeting for the non-member.

Crocker Holiday Artisan Market is looking for a few good musicians. If you would like to play at this fun event in a low-stress situation, this is the place for you. This is background music at an event that supports the Crocker Art Museum. We have some limited opportunities for musicians who use amplification, but mostly we want small groups to play in small rooms. This is perfect for recorders and other early instru-ments. There is no piano available, but there are electrical outlets, if, for instance, your group has an electric harpsichord. Or an electric sackbutt. The event is November 25, 26 and 27, the three days after Thanksgiving at Scottish Rite at Carlson and H Streets, near CSUS. Call Alex Ives at 916-215-2808 if you are interested

Note: Sine Nomine has played at this event for several years. Alex’s description is totally accurate: fun and low stress. Shoppers pause briefly, make nice comments, and move on. And when you’re done playing, you can shop...

Across the Pond…Across the Pond…Across the Pond…Across the Pond…

Last year SRS member Jerry

Schwartz was in Edinburgh and found

that during his time there the Edinburgh

branch of the Society of Recorder Players

would be meeting. He inquired and

found that guests were very welcome. He

went to their meeting and had a good

time.

Fast forward to last month. Patty

Johnson was looking online for an ar-

rangement of “The Holly and The Ivy”

for possible use at the Winter Party. In

the items Google listed she noticed the

program for the 2014 Edinburgh holiday

party concert which included a fugue

based on “The Holly and the Ivy”. A

pleasant email interchange ensued with

the result that she received PDFs of the

piece, and a shout-out to Jerry whom they

remembered.

Thank you, Edinburgh Branch of

the Society of Recorder Players; thank

you, Jerry Schwartz; and thank you,

World-Wide Web!!

On a Sunday in September: Brian Thompson and Susan Titus played in an artist friend’s back yard during her Open Studio event. In the shade of a big tree, with a small but inter-ested and changing audience, we played an eclectic assortment of duets, for 2 recorders and for guitar and recorder, from Medieval and Renaissance music to Telemann and con-temporary folk music.

Sunday, November 27: Sine Nomine will be

playing at the Crocker Art Museum Artisan

Craft Fair from 2:00-3:00pm.

Sunday, December 18: Two groups of SRS

members will be playing in the Capitol Ro-

tunda at 1:00pm. Lovely venue! If you can,

come up and hear our members!

About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder SocietySocietySocietySociety

The Sacramento Recorder Society, founded in 1982, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other early music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately and learn fingerings and be-come comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra. We meet monthly from September through June, from 6:45pm to 9:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th Street, between J St. and H St. Most of our meet-ings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder tech-nique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. Many of our members also play in smaller groups in members’ homes during the rest of the month.
