SAGIT has longevityThe South Australian Grain Industry Trust Fund (SAGIT) was established in 1991 to administer the voluntary research levy contributed by SA grain growers.

YOUR support keeps SAGIT goingSAGIT is funded by a 30 cents per tonne contribution on all grain delivered by SA grain growers. Without your support, there would be no SAGIT.

SAGIT invests in a range of areasResearch and development investment of more than $2 million a year is supported in a range of areas crucial to advancing the SA grain industry, including grain growing, farming systems, soil management, harvesting, storage, processing and marketing and for dissemination of technical information to growers.

SAGIT is directed by growersSAGIT has a board of four grower trustees and a trustee appointed by the Minister for Agriculture. An open call is held annually and the trustees take into consideration issues affecting SA grain production and innovative ideas to progress the industry. Trustees receive specialist agronomic and scientific advice to ensure their funding decisions are informed and credible.

SAGIT is accountable to growersAn annual report of how levy funds are spent is available to growers and provided to Grain Producers SA and the South Australian Minister for Agriculture.

AS317: Efficiency of fertiliser N products on calcareous and sandy soil types


A comparison of different nitrogen fertilisers (including urea and sulphate of ammonia) in field trials at two sites with lighter textured soil (Karoonda and Condowie) in 2017 and 2018. This follows on from pot experiments in 2016 (SAGIT project AS116) comparing different nitrogen fertilisers and soil moisture contents in sandy soils.


AS216: Time of sowing influence on phosphorus requirements and soil testing


The impact of the time of sowing on the uptake of phosphorus by wheat, and the economic rate of P to apply, was assessed in controlled environment glasshouse tests in 2016 and in field trials in 2017. Further field trials will take place in 2018 at three sites (Condowie, Arthurton and Urania) using two wheat varieties, five P rates and at three times of sowing.


CSI118: Improved capture of native soil N and urea fertiliser in wheat

Glasshouse and field studies (at Roseworthy and Karoonda) on the impact of different wheat varieties on the abundance of ‘free-living’ nitrogen fixing bacteria and influence on mineralisation of nitrogen and uptake by the wheat. Will use genetic analysis to assess the abundance of microbial groups associated with plant roots and involved in nitrogen cycling in soils.

DGA116: Agronomic evaluation of durums for crown rot resistance

Durum lines with improved crown rot resistance from selections at the Waite Campus (in the SAGIT-funded project S514) were tested at two sites (Turretfield and Upper South East) in 2016 and 2017, with further trials in 2018. Grain yield of a mutant lentil line (with good early vigour and tolerance to group B and C herbicides) will be assessed at Bute, Lameroo and Hopetoun. Also crosses between lentil lines (with early vigour and herbicide tolerance) and commercial varieties will be multiplied (six times) in 2018 and will then be assessed in field trials in 2019 and 2020. S1117: CARASA: Cereal Aphid Risk Assessment for South Australia

Intensive monitoring for all cereal aphids, including Russian wheat aphid, in three regions of SA (Mid-North, South East and Murray Mallee). Techniques include suction traps and sown plots of cereals (at four times of sowing - from April through to July). Will also test the efficacy of imidaclorprid for control of aphids in field trials and assess any grain yield losses from aphid infestations.

Genetic analysis of peas for tolerance to heat stress (from an Algerian line, 21DZA, crossed with Kaspa) with an aim to produce molecular markers for selection of heat stress tolerance in pea breeding programs. Glasshouse experiments will also examine the role of moisture stress on the genetic control of heat stress tolerance.

S716: Optimising legume inoculation for dry sowing

Glasshouse studies were conducted in 2016 on the survival of different rhizobium products using different soil moistures and temperatures simulating dry sowing conditions. Field trials in 2017 and 2018 are at three sites (Eyre Peninsula, Mid North and the Mallee). Treatments for field trials include different rhizobium products and placement of the inoculant at seeding.

This traineeship program is a continuation of the previous SAGIT-GRDC internship program. It is designed to encourage more agricultural students to continue with a career in agricultural research. SARDI315: Dual-purpose canola for South Australia’s high rainfall zone

SARDI $75,000 1/1/2016 – 1/2/2019

The biomass production, grazing potential and grain yield of 20 canola varieties and breeding lines will be assessed in field trials in the Lower South East in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The canola will be dual purpose (grazing and grain) types. Trials will be sown at two different times, the first being the earliest reliable sowing time after January.

TC117: Optimisation of Seed Terminator settings in the South Australian context

To assess the effectiveness and power requirements of the Seed Terminator for killing seeds of 11 species of weeds. These are ryegrass, brome grass, wild oats, wild radish, bifora, bedstraw, Indian hedge mustard, milk thistle, burr medic, tares and marshmallow. These weed seeds will be mixed with four different chaff types: wheat, lentils, canola and faba beans. Also assessments in three paddock situations of the effect of using a Seed Terminator at harvest (2017) on weed populations the following year (2018).
