The School and its Community Welcome from the Headteacher We would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for the interest you have shown in Blackwood Comprehensive School. We hope that this prospectus will provide you with a good indication of what we can offer your child. Blackwood has a proud reputation of academic achievement, and for sporting and cultural excellence. Our aim is to ensure that each individual pupil is given every opportunity to reach their full potential; we have high expectations of all our pupils and will support each individual child as they strive for success in life. Although academic achievement is our main priority, we also provide a wide range of sporting, musical and cultural activities. These are designed to develop in our pupils a range of essential skills and competencies to enable them to take their place in society and to make the most of their lives. We pride ourselves on the development of a disciplined, productive and caring environment. Our pupils are expected to behave well and show positive attitudes to their work and each other. We believe that children are far happier if they work in a caring, secure and pleasant environment where they feel valued as individuals. When pupils leave us after their time here, we take a lot of pleasure in reflecting on what they have achieved. We are very conscious that their successes in school help lay the foundations for a rich and fulfilling life. The school is determined in its aims which are to maximise achievement, realise individual potential and prepare young people for a challenging and exciting future. Blackwood Comprehensive School has for many years been a successful, popular and happy school. Our work is founded on the comprehensive ideal – a belief that all children are of equal value and that it is our task to help develop the abilities and talents that all undoubtedly have. We value every pupil equally. The particular strengths children have obviously vary from one individual to another. We recognise this and provide a range of curricular and extra-curricular programmes to meet the needs of all our pupils. The recent ESTYN Inspection Report describes Blackwood as ‘a very good school with many outstanding features’. We believe that we are already a very successful school, but we are not complacent, believing firmly in the principle of continuous improvement. I am pleased you are interested in joining our school. Blackwood Comprehensive School is an exciting and stimulating place to be, for both its staff and pupils. The quality of our relationships with pupils and their parents is important to us and I look forward to welcoming you as part of our community. R K Pawar

THE SCHOOL BADGE The school badge has its origins in the beehive crest of the old Bedwellty Urban District Council. The three hexagons are derived from the cells of the honeycomb. The bee signifies industry. The lower left symbol is the Yin-Yang of ancient Chinese philosophy and represents the interplay of contrasting yet complementary forces, physical and spiritual, which sustain the universe. The lower right symbol is a hieroglyph standing for tree and is a reference to the place name, Blackwood. THE SCHOOL DAY The school day starts at 8.30am. Pupils are expected to be on site prior to the school bell ringing at 8.30am.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES The aims of the school make it clear that we recognise the uniqueness of each individual and we value the contribution they are able to make to the school and to the wider community. We are opposed to all discrimination on the grounds, of race, gender, disability or ability. An equal opportunities policy adopted by the governing body of the school is available for viewing by parents.

Learning Support Policy School Philosophy Blackwood Comprehensive School is committed to raising the educational standards of all our pupils as well as creating an environment in which each child feels wanted, valued, successful and happy. We recognise that many pupils will have special needs at some time during their school life and take proper regard of the Code of Practice to promote the well being and academic achievements of all our pupils. In implementing this policy, we believe pupils will be helped to overcome their difficulties. The philosophy of Blackwood School is that the needs of all pupils who may have barriers to learning either throughout or at any time during their school careers must be addressed. Where appropriate such children should be educated along side their peers in mainstream school were their needs will be met to ensure optimum learning. If pupils have been identified as needing more intensive help they will, where this is appropriate, be placed in a small group for particular aspects of their learning. We also believe that by working in partnership with parents and pupils much can be done to overcome the range of difficulties experienced by some children. All the children will have access to a broad, balanced and relevant education regardless of their individual difficulties. The provision of an appropriate and differentiated curriculum will ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to progress and achieve success to the highest possible level. The school also makes certain that pupils’ interests are stimulated and they take enjoyment in their own education. The Special Education Needs (SEN) Policy will support pupils as they become familiar with a body of knowledge, skills, principles and vocabulary in order for them to lead full and productive lives. The full SEN Policy is available on request from school.

Accessibility Blackwood Comprehensive School is fully accessible throughout its site.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

RE is a timetabled lesson and is part of the school’s curriculum The school has a detailed scheme of work for each year group where children are taught about religion and learn to reflect and understand religious belief. They also learn the differences and similarities between Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Sikhism. An Act of Collective Worship takes place daily within an assembly lead by the Headteacher, Teachers, classes and visitors. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and Collective Worship.

THE CURRICULUM The curriculum at Blackwood Comprehensive School is broad, balanced and inclusive, with “several outstanding features” (ESTYN 2009). We aim to promote and develop the intellectual, personal, social and physical development of all of our pupils. This includes the not only the formal programme of lessons, but also the extensive “informal” programme of extra-curricular activities and clubs at lunch times, after school, during weekends and holidays. We are committed to preparing our pupils for lifelong learning.

A positive approach to all aspects of school life is encouraged so that all pupils of all abilities and aptitudes take pride in their achievements. No two children are alike. The organisation of the school is intended to enable pupils, supported by staff, to make informed judgements about their lives. Following on from primary school, the content of the curriculum is determined mainly by statutory guidelines provided by the government in the form of the National Curriculum. Academic Organisation In most subjects at Key Stage 3 pupils are taught in their mixed ability form classes. In English and Mathematics pupils are set according to ability. Extra support is made available to pupils who require help with literacy and numeracy. In some curriculum areas such as French and Welsh pupils may be grouped broadly according to ability; in other lessons, such as PE and Technology, the ability range is fully mixed. Pupils’ progress is monitored regularly and groups may be changed as a result. In Years 10 and 11 the school offers a range of courses in all subject areas. All courses lead to entry and accreditation through public examinations at 16+. The courses followed and examinations taken by our pupils are carefully selected to meet the ability and needs of the individual. Certification is available in all subject areas at GCSE, BTEC and other vocational qualifications. Pupils are graded on the quality of their coursework, controlled assessments and written exam performance.

Page 6: The School and its Community Welcome from the Headteacherlearn.caerphilly.org.uk/blackwoodcomprehensive/...I am pleased you are interested in joining our school. Blackwood Comprehensive

Entry Level courses, designed for pupils for whom traditional written exams are unsuitable, are also available in certain subject areas. The certificates and grades awarded at Entry Level place great emphasis on continuous assessment through the duration of the course. The school also offers the Welsh Baccalaureate Foundation and intermediate qualification, part of which is studied at college. Pupils also have the opportunity to study other subjects, both academic and vocational, in addition to the National Curriculum in Years 10 and 11. We make our curriculum appropriate to the needs of the pupils using a variety of teaching styles and assessment

procedures that encourage a positive attitude to learning, the understanding of concepts and values, and the acquisition of knowledge and skills. All pupils are given detailed advice on options’ choices from experts inside school as well as Careers Wales. “Option menus for Key Stage 4 pupils provide a

good range of vocational and traditional subjects well-suited to individual needs.”

ESTYN 2009 After leaving Blackwood Comprehensive School our pupils follow a range of learning pathways, but the vast majority travel to Coleg Gwent Crosskeys to continue their studies. Key Skills

Key Skills are an interrelating set of skills that underpin study and employment. Key Skills are intended to equip pupils with the skills necessary for lifelong learning. They are the skills most commonly needed for success in a range of activities at work, in education and training and life in general. They focus the pupils’ attention on where and how they are using key skills for the purpose of improving the quality of their learning, work and performance.

The school actively promotes the development of Key Skills and external accreditation where appropriate, with Year 9 pupils achieving success in Level 1 ICT and Level 1 Communication.

EXTRA CURRICULAR At Blackwood Comprehensive School, “Extra curricular activities are outstanding” (ESTYN 2009). Pupils are offered a, “diverse range of activities and clubs that promote pupils’ learning and develop their personal and social skills. A large number of pupils participate in a wide-range of extra curricular activities” (ESTYN 2009). Such activities are dependent on the voluntary efforts of the staff, who give generously of their

time outside school hours. Our pupils have the opportunity to participate in a huge range of sporting activities, including rugby, football, netball, hockey, gymnastics, tennis, cross-country running, and many more. The school is a centre of excellence for trampolining and has a purpose built dance studio. Many of our pupils represent the school at district and county level, whilst several have gone on to earn national honours. All pupils are actively encouraged to participate in all activities, regardless of ability and we have close links with

our primary schools through PESS and Dragon Sports initiatives.

The school has a thriving Music department, with the Celtic band, the Swing band, rock bands, as well as many other opportunities. The department recently returned from a highly successful tour to Barcelona, and works closely with the after school drama club to produce shows and musicals such as “The Little Shop of Horrors.” Homework and revision clubs are run by all departments during lunch times and after school, whilst

the Learning Resources Centre offers the opportunity for independent study, as well as a highly competitive chess club. The ECO club has worked hard to improve the school environment and has established an allotment. It was instrumental in the school being awarded the Green Flag in 2009. Pupils take part in public speaking and debating, the Carnegie Book Awards, Lit quiz, Maths Challenge and many more competitions. In Key Stage 4 the Duke of Edinburgh scheme sees pupils taking part in expeditions. Numerous visits and trips take place throughout the school year. Collections for charities focus on local and national concerns and are driven forward by the pupils. Blackwood Comprehensive School is concerned with all aspects of education. Our pupils are given fantastic opportunities to develop both inside and outside the classroom.

SCHOOL VISITS Throughout their time in Blackwood Comprehensive pupils will have the opportunity to participate in an extensive programme of educational visits linked to different areas of the curriculum. The Governors support all activities which broaden and enrich the curriculum and school life. No charge may be made for participation in trips and activities during school time, but the school may wish to ask for voluntary contributions in order to defray the costs of such activities. Inability or refusal to make a voluntary contribution will NOT preclude a pupil from participation in such activities. If the activity can not take place without sufficient voluntary contributions, this will be made clear in the initial letter. If insufficient contributions are

received, and cancellation is necessary, all contributions will be returned to parents. Field trips and enrichment activities outside school time will be charged for, and parents will always be given the cost in advance. However, the school would wish for no pupil to be excluded from any activity by financial hardship. Cases of hardship would be viewed sympathetically by the Headteacher.

CAREERS EDUCATION AND GUIDANCE

“There are outstanding features in the provision of careers education”. (ESTYN 2009).

Careers Education is seen as an integral part of the aim of developing pupils’ qualities of initiative and self-reliance. All Year 11 pupils will have a personal interview with the County Careers Officer. The Careers Officer works closely with the school to arrange careers visits, talks, films, career conventions, etc. The Careers Officer also attends consultation evenings with parents of pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11.

Every year, the school arranges for up to 45 companies and trades to attend a careers symposium to talk to pupils. The close working relationship with the local Rotary Club results in the school using their expertise to conduct mock interviews with pupils. An important part of the careers education and guidance programme is a week-long work experience placement with local industry.

This is organised by the Careers Education and Guidance Co-ordinator and is a very successful and worthwhile experience for all pupils.

Work-related education (WRE) is now a statutory requirement for KS4 pupils. The school works closely with Careers Wales to ensure that the requirements are not only met but provide pupils with sound, practical and sensible advice and experiences to prepare them for their future working lives. ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Attendance is a legal obligation The importance of regular school attendance cannot be overestimated. Regular attendance is paramount to a good education. Securing good attendance in Blackwood Comprehensive School must therefore be a high priority for the school and its teaching staff, governors, parents and pupils. Attendance at Blackwood has been improving steadily over a number of years and we aim to maintain this upward trend by working closely with families to monitor attendance. Parents will recognise that both the school and parents have legal responsibilities. Parents should notify their school of their child’s absence by 10 ‘o clock on the first day of occurrence and ensure that written confirmation of this absence is given to the form tutor on the child’s return to school. If the school does not receive a phone call by 10 ‘o clock then parents will be contacted by our automated ‘Truancy Call System’. ‘Truancy Call’ will also contact parents if pupils leave the school premises without permission. The school will contact parents if there is concern about an unexplained absence and parents are encouraged to contact us if they have any such concerns. The school will, on deciding that an absence is unreasonable or when no explanations are forthcoming, involve the Education Welfare Officer who will visit the home and discover why the child has been absent. If attendance falls below 80% the Education Welfare Officer could issue families with papers summoning them to court. Letters are sent out on a termly basis to the parents of pupils who are below 85% attendance. All pupils who achieve 95%+ attendance are entered into a termly lottery where they can win cash prizes. Punctuality is also very important and repeated lateness to school or lessons could result in sanctions. If you decide to send your child to Blackwood Comprehensive School then attendance must be regular. The aim of the school is 92% attendance. The school will actively encourage dialogue to ensure that we develop a good working relationship between teachers, parents and pupils. Further information is available in the ‘Policy and Guidance on School Attendance’.

ATTENDANCE STATISTICS - For the School Year 2008/09

Unauthorised Attendance 1.3% Authorised Attendance 7% Overall Attendance 91.8%

THE FORM TUTOR AND PROGRESS MANAGER Pupils entering the school at the start of year 7 will be carefully placed in mixed ability tutor

groups for registration so that there is a balance of boys and girls within these groups. They will also be placed wherever possible with friendship groups. Groups are created after a lengthy period of consultation with the primary schools to ensure that pupils will find familiar faces in their new form. Each form will have a lead form tutor and a support tutor who will be there to guide and supports pupils for the first twenty five minutes of each day. The overall guidance is the responsibility of the appropriate progress manager who monitors and coordinates the

academic and social progress of pupils in his or her charge. REWARDS The school believes in the celebration of achievement by pupils and staff. Achievement does not imply only academic success but sustained or extraordinary effort, sporting achievement, good citizenship and outstanding performance or effort in any sphere of the pupils lives. The teacher’s approval, both voiced and written on work, must at all times be the first way in which the pupils understand that they are achieving well. There is no substitute for praise at the time of good achievement or effort. To recognise more formally the effort and achievement of pupils we have a merit point scheme. On entry into school all pupils will be put into a house. Throughout the year pupils collect points for their house and record the points in their planner. At the end of the academic year the winning house is presented with a shield. Pupils who receive a specific number of merit points during the year also receive rewards to celebrate their success. Merits are linked to effort in lessons, attendance, punctuality, good use of planner, involvement in extra curricular clubs, good citizenship etc. Individual departments have their own guidelines for giving merits, but must ensure that these guideline ensure a fair and regular distribution of merits, not just the academically most able, but to pupils of all ability levels whose efforts are outstanding.

DISCIPLINE Good discipline comes from mutual respect. The aim of the school’s policy is to create a secure and caring community in which pupils can work, and learn to live, amicably with each other. The recent school inspection report stated ‘Pupils’ behaviour is exceptionally good, both in lessons and around school. They

have very good personal and social skills. These contribute to the very good relationships between all members of the school community. This helps generate a

pleasant and civilised atmosphere which is conducive to learning.’ (ESTYN 2009)

The behaviour policy of the school is based on common sense rules for the good of all, together with the recognition of all parties that are signatories of the Home-School Agreement. Managing pupil behaviour is the responsibility of all. The pupil is obviously central to the process and he/she must be encouraged to recognise right from wrong. The understanding of basic school rules and the need of such rules, to the recognition of the rights of fellow pupils and people within the local community have to be the starting point. The teacher needs to build a good relationship with his/her charges so that a mutual respect exists. The parent also has a role to play in supporting both the pupil and the school. Support and cooperation of parents, who are genuinely concerned about pupil welfare and educational progress is essential in helping to control and modify behaviour. The school uses a behaviour tracking system (for both positive and negative referrals) called Sleuth. Some pupils who receive a number of negative ‘Sleuth’ require additional support and guidance necessary to develop the appropriate self-discipline skills. In these cases the school relies on parental support for a range of sanctions. Some of the sanctions used include verbal reprimands, subject behaviour reports, progress manager intervention, after school detention (for which 24 hours notice is provided), parents invited to school and referral to senior management team. Serious breaches in terms of behaviour may lead to internal exclusion, the setting up of a Pastoral Support Plan, the involvement of Caerphilly’s ‘Behaviour Support’ team and ultimately fixed or permanent exclusion from school. Progress managers will contact parents in the event of a cause for concern and subject teachers will make observations in exercise books and Pupil Planners to allow parents to monitor progress. ‘Behaviour management and support are outstanding. They have resulted in relatively little temporary and no permanent exclusion of pupils in the last year’. (ESTYN report 2009) Further information is outlined in the school discipline policy. THE SCHOOL COUNCIL Pupil voice is important in Blackwood Comprehensive School. Each tutor group elects representatives to the relevant Year Group Councils which in turn provide representatives to an elected school council. “The school takes good account of pupils’ views and has implemented several of their suggestions”. (ESTYN 2009) Year 11 School Council members are active members of the Governing Body.

ANTI-BULLYING POLICY ‘There are effective strategies to discourage bullying, racial discrimination and other forms of harassment. Pupils are very supportive of these strategies and acknowledge the school’s effectiveness in dealing with oppressive behaviour.’ (ESTYN Report 2009) Everyone in the school has the right to feel welcome secure and happy. We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all pupils so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere where they can take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them at school. Bullying in any form is considered to be totally unacceptable at Blackwood Comprehensive School. Every effort is made by members of staff to make children aware of the effect and consequences that bullying behaviour might have. Through assemblies, form periods, PSE lessons and visiting theatre companies pupils are constantly reminded of the issues regarding bullying. Our peer mentor scheme is also an excellent way of ensuring that pupils support one another. Peer mentors are paired with pupils for the first fortnight in year seven. They are also available at break times and lunch times to listen to and support pupils experiencing problems. We adopt a consistency in our approach to each incident and every incident of bullying will be followed up until a positive conclusion is reached. We want all our pupils to feel happy, comfortable and supported, so that they enjoy coming to school.

MEDICAL The school has a medical room which is staffed by a number of qualified first aiders. The first aiders treat pupils with minor injuries. First aiders seek the advice of other medical professionals and/or parents if the nature of the injury is deemed more severe. If a child is required to go to hospital, parents will be contacted to accompany them or meet them at the hospital. Pupils who attend the hospital directly from school will be accompanied by a member of the school staff. First aiders also care for those pupils who suffer an onset of illness during the school day. The parents/carers of pupils who are ill will be contacted to arrange for their child to return home. It is therefore important that parents/carers keep the school informed of their contact details. First Aiders also support those pupils who take regular medication or have medical needs. Parents should contact the school prior to admission to discuss any medical needs their child may have. SCHOOL MEALS Blackwood School is very proud of its catering facilities which serve a wide variety of food from two canteens, based upon a cafeteria system, at reasonable prices. All food served follows Welsh Assembly Guidelines on food in schools. The canteens operate a computerised cashless system. Each pupil is issued a lunch card which they can credit with funds either through coin machines located in the canteens or by cheque/cash which is processed by the kitchen office. Pupils receiving free school meals will have their card credited automatically with the current free school meal allowance each day. This system alleviates any embarrassment pupils may feel about receiving school meals. If you have any queries regarding free meals please visit the website below or telephone the school for further information. www.myschoollunch.co.uk/caerphilly/en/parents/free_school_meals The main canteen is open at break and lunchtime. The focus on the food at break time is snacks/baguettes and drinks. At lunchtime within the main canteen are two food outlets – Hot Food Counter which serves a variety of hot food including the “Meal of the Day” which comprises of two courses and a drink and a Baguette Bar. The small canteen has a focus on healthy eating. There are three serving stations - Pasta Bar, hot food counter and a salad bar. In addition during the Autumn and Spring Term the school has a breakfast club which is based in the large canteen providing pupils with the opportunity to purchase a variety of breakfast items and hot drinks. The canteens also provide facilities for those pupils who bring a packed lunch.

Pupils, who wish to go home for lunch, will be issued a lunch pass, upon receipt of a written letter from their parent/carer. Having a lunch pass does not entitle pupils to use the local shops or facilities. SCHOOL SECURITY

Pupil and staff safety is a major concern. Parents should not bring cars onto the school premises at the beginning or the end of the school day. If you do bring your car onto the school site during the school day please drive very carefully and be aware of people moving around the school site.

Any visitors to the school should report in the first instance to the Reception Area which is clearly signposted. This enables the school to be aware of who is on site and to account for all personnel (pupils and adults) in case of an emergency. Pupils needing to leave the school during the school day will require a written note from their parent/carer and follow a signing out procedure. If possible medical/dental appointments should be made out of school hours. ADMISSION PROCEDURES The entry of children to schools is administered by Caerphilly County Borough Council (the LEA). Within the County Borough each school has an area that it traditionally serves called the ‘catchment area’. In line with legislation the LEA must allow all parents the opportunity to express a preference for the school they wish their child to attend. Criteria for Pupil Entry 1. Children who live in the school’s catchment area on or before the published closing

date, and whose parents have expressed a preference by the closing date, will be offered places first. Should the number of applications from within catchment be greater than the Admission Number, the allocation of any remaining places will be selected according to the following criteria, which are listed in priority order:

Children recommended for placement for medical, psychological or special

education reasons. These must be confirmed by the LEA’s professional advisers.

Children with siblings (brother and sisters) living in the same household attending the school in September 2010.

2. After taking account of the above categories, priority will be based on the closeness

to the school measured by the Authority’s G.I.S. (Geographical Information System) database. Distance is measured from the nearest entrance or gate of the home to the nearest gate or entrance of the school. When considering whether a child lives in a school’s catchment area, the address is considered is that of the parent or legal guardian, irrespective of a family’s domestic arrangements. i.e. the address of another relative or childminder etc. must not be given. In certain cases it may be necessary to provide evidence relating to the child(ren) in question, to show the home address of the child(ren).

Pupils from outside the school’s catchment area will be admitted in accordance with parental preference if the Admission Number of the school, class or unit has not been reached and, if selection is necessary, the criteria shown above will be used.

Headteachers of primary schools will be able to inform parents of the secondary school which their children should normally attend. Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate pupils, an application must be made for transfer to secondary schools at the appropriate time. Applications for admissions should be made as early as possible and before 11th December 2009.

Changing Secondary School Changing secondary schools is a significant step for your child to take. In the case of moving the family home, such a decision may well be a necessity and you will need to contact your local school or the Education & Leisure Directorate for assistance. If however, you would like your child to transfer from one secondary school to another, please contact your present Headteacher first. Should you still wish to proceed with these transfer arrangements; you must contact the Education & Leisure Directorate for advice in making your application, which will then be required in writing. In considering your request for transfer, the LEA will review the number of pupils in the year group relevant to your child. If the child is in years 10 or 11, the range of subject options chosen may also be a factor. If that particular year has not reached the school’s published admissions limit, then your child will be admitted to the school. Parents should note, however, that curriculum option choices may vary from school to school. Applying for a Place When you apply for a place at a particular school, you must complete the relevant application form, which is available at the school. You must apply by 11th December 2009 for admission in September 2010. The LEA will inform you whether or not it is possible for your child to attend your preferred school. Each school produces a prospectus, which contains relevant information including school aims and educational beliefs, the organisation of the school and curriculum opportunities, including out of school activities. This school prospectus is available from the Headteacher. Timetable for admissions to schools September 2010 The expected timetable to process applications for primary and secondary schools for September 2010 is: Admission Forms sent to parents 23rd October 2009 Forms returned to LEA 11th December 2009 Parents notified of outcome 31st March 2010

FINAL WORDS FROM THE HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL Gareth Walton Head Boy (2009-2010) I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Blackwood Comprehensive School. It is a wonderful place where teachers and students work together to create an atmosphere that is enjoyed by all. An endless list of activities available to pupils is waiting for you to view. There is bound to be something here to your liking. You may be nervous on your first day at secondary school but you’ll also be excited as well. So much is done to help you settle in. You will meet new friends and the older pupils and teachers will help you if you get lost or have any questions. You quickly find friendship groups and together you move through the years faster than you thought possible. I remember my first day well but now I am about to sit my GCSEs! I hope that the examination results for pupils in my year group will be reflective of the high standards expected of all of us. Our school has an excellent record of results over the years due to the determination of staff to get the best out of all pupils. Preparation and practice are key and these are drummed into us at an early stage in Year 10. Our teachers watch us develop our skills and always seem to know what path is best. The school motto is ‘Strive to Succeed’ and that is exactly what takes place. Extra-curricular activities, as I have mentioned, are another excellent feature of our school. We have peripatetic music teachers that come into school to provide further learning for our students. Also the staff members of each department run clubs. The P.E department has experienced many success stories through their persistence at helping students achieve their best, and I have particularly benefited from these. Therefore, the school covers a wide range of activities for any willing student to attend. School trips are organised by staff to reward pupils who try hard in school. The day trip to France and the visit to Llangrannog are just two examples of these. Another example, would be the visit to the West Wales theme park: Oakwood Park. These trips are available to all pupils who try their best during subjects. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is another opportunity the school provides in order to stretch pupils and extend their experiences. In taking part in this, I pushed myself to new limits and gained a great confidence boost. The main advice I can give to pupils coming up to Blackwood Comprehensive School is to embrace every opportunity given to you and try your hardest in everything. These will ensure a fruitful time at Blackwood and let you leave Year Eleven with your head held high knowing that you participated. The journey that awaits you is a fast paced, exciting one and I’m sure you’ll be proud, just like me, to be a student at such a wonderful school.

Abbie Munro Head girl (2009/2010) I would like to start by saying welcome to you in your new school. Five years ago, I was in your shoes, beginning my first day at Blackwood. I was excited to turn a new page in my life by entering "the big school," and I was also really nervous. Within the first day of attending Blackwood, I loved it! The teachers were so friendly and welcoming, I felt right at home. Don't get too comfortable though, because you won't be in Year 7 for long I assure you. The time absolutely flies and already I’m preparing to sit my GCSE's. So make the most of your time here and take any opportunity that comes your way. Always strive to succeed. During my journey through Blackwood Comprehensive, I made sure that I got myself involved with any activities that were available, from netball clubs, to lectures to the school council and to eventually becoming head girl. Blackwood offers a wide variety of activities for the pupils to ensure that everyone has something to take part in. Our activities involve so many sporting clubs, (thanks to the P.E staff and the 5x60 members) book clubs, (thanks to the English department) band practices (thanks to the music department) and many, many more. However, these activities and opportunities would not be available without the contribution of all the staff who willingly give up their free time to commit to pupils’ education after school and during break times etc. I think a big thanks is in order to all the teachers for pushing us to our full potential and maintaining the high standard of teaching here at Blackwood Comprehensive. All pupils here are encouraged to attend extra curricular activities and after school revision etc. And if you posses a talent outside of school, then our staff are always interested in developing it in school. Being one of the leading schools, we have a high expectation here at Blackwood and are always taking part in Welsh sports championships and always do exceptionally well in areas such as trampoline tournaments. It's also a fun way to keep active, fit and healthy. With so many different facilities on offer, we have many advantages at Blackwood. Our history, Welsh, French and music departments are well known for their very entertaining school trips which I can say I’m lucky enough to have been on. Usually during your first year, you'll be given the opportunity to visit Llangrannog with the Welsh department which is an outdoor pursuit centre and is very, very energetic and fun. Also, the French department are known for many trips such as Disneyland Paris and skiing in the French Alps which I can truly say was an amazing and a fabulous experience to be given. The teachers are fantastic for their support and guidance on these school outings. I'm glad to say that bullying is not an issue in our school, we have many programmes to prevent it, such as peer mentors and the support room along with school councillors. So there's no need to worry about that! If there are any worries, queries or concerns, there will always be someone helpful and kind here for you to ask. So remember, coming to the "Comp" isn't the end of the world, it's just the beginning where you learn new things and meet new friends. And with our buddying system (where Year 10 pupils escort new comers around the school to their lessons and to an early lunch for their fist week) you'll know your way around in no time! So come on, you've got nothing to lose and a lot to gain from Blackwood Comprehensive.

Finally, I'd like to say that my time in Blackwood is slowly coming to an end, and I really will miss it, it's almost like a second home! These last few years have gone by so quickly and

already I’ve received an exceptional education, become more confident, found more hobbies which interest me and made so many wonderful friends. So enjoy your time here, grab

everything that's thrown at you and always, always, always, "Strive to succeed."

Good Luck, and enjoy yourself.
